• AcademicSkillsDevelopmentandTutoring:TheAcademicandCareerDevelopmentCenter,locatedintheKelleyCenter,offersindividualsessionsandgroupworkshopsonacademicskillsdevelopmentandlearningsupportresources.TheOfficealsomanagesthetutoringprogramandrecruitsstudentswhoareproficientintheirmajorconcentrationand/orothersubjectsandtrainsthemtoserveaspeertutors.Peertutoringisgroupbased,freeofcharge,andopentoallstudents.AdditionaltutoringservicesareavailablethroughtheUniversity'sindividualschoolsinselectsubjectareas.

• BannowScienceCenter:TheRudolphF.BannowScienceCenterhousesadvancedinstructionalandresearchfacilitiesthatfosterthedevelopmentofscienceandengineeringlearningcommunities,engagestudentsinexperientiallearning,andinvitecollaborativefacultyandstudentresearchinbiology,chemistry,computerscience,engineering,mathematics,physics,andpsychology.

• CulpeperLanguageResourceCenter:TheCharlesE.CulpeperLanguageResourceCenter,locatedinCanisius207,isdesignedtosupportandpromotethestudyandinstructionofforeignlanguagesandtheircultures.Studentsworkinteractivelywithcomputerandweb-basedmaterials.Thisallowsthemtotakeownershipoftheirlearningexperienceandbecomelifelonglearners.Weprovideone-on-oneassistanceinfindingmaterialsandaccessingtheonlinecomponentsoflanguagescourses.

TheCornerstoneProgramisdesignedtoincreaseacademicengagementforfirst-yearstudentsbypromotingactiveandcollaborativelearningwithpeersandgreaterinteractionwithfacultyinthefirstsemesterofcollege.Throughfoundationalcoreandmajorcourses,theCornerstone

Programintensifiestheintellectualexperience,impactspositivelystudents'academicsuccessandretention,andpromotescampuscommunitybasedonacademics.Cornerstonecoursespromotefacultyandstudentinteractionaroundscholarlyandcreativeinquiry,fosteractiveandcollaborativelearning,andconnectstudentstoenrichingeducationalexperiencesacrossthecurriculum.

andcommunityamongstudentslivinginaresidencehallandhelpmanagetheday-to-dayoperationsofthebuilding.WorkStudy:FederalWorkstudymaybeapartofastudent’sfinancialaidpackage.Studentscanearnthismoneybyholdingapart-timejobinanofficeordepartmentoncampus.Therearealsoopportunitiesforstudentstoearnthismoneybyworkinginoneofseveraloff-campuscommunityserviceagencies.

TipsforaSmoothTransitionThetransitiontocollegelifecanbedifficultforstudents.Thereismoreexpectedofthestudentsandanincreaseinacademicdifficultyfromhighschool.Theparent/guardianroleischanging-movingfrombeingdirectlyinvolvedtoamoresupportiverole.Knowingthatthistransitioncanbechallengingforsomestudents,weencourageparent/guardian(s)tobesupportivewithoutbeingoverlyinvolved.Herearesometipsthatmighthelpinthetransition:

• Studentsshouldbeempoweredtobecomemoreindependent.Advocatingforone’sselfisanimportantpartofbeingacollegestudentandayoungadult.Trytalkingthroughthestepsthatheorshemighttaketowardsansweringanyquestionsorsolvingaproblemaboutaparticularexperience.Thenletstudentstaketheresponsibilityforfollowingup.

• Listentohisorherconcerns.Sometimesstudentsjustneedsomeonetolisten,butitisimportanttoletthemfindtheirownway.Beparticularlyawareofstressfultimesintheacademiccalendar.Thesetimesareoftenaroundmidtermsandfinals.Itishelpfultominimizefamilialobligationsduringthesetimes.

• Allowstudentstomaketheirowndecisions.Besupportiveeveniftheendresultmaynotbeideal.Offeradviceandencouragethemtogatherasmuchinformationaspossibletomakeanappropriatedecision.

• Givethemtheirspace.Manyaspectsofcollegelifearenewandrequirelearningandadjustmentsbystudents,suchasknowinghowtocontactprofessorsandfacultyadvisors,gettingtoknowtheirroommateandthecultureofthecampus.Openandregularcommunicationisimportant,butbesuretogivethemroomtoexploreandbecomefamiliarwiththemanyfacetsoftheirnewsurroundings.Studentsmayexperiencehomesicknessearlyon,andcontinuedsupportisimportantastheycontinuetorealizetheirfreedomandindependence.Encouragetheuseofresourcesoncampustosupportthem,suchasResidentAssistants,FirstYearMentors,facultymembers,andfacultyadvisors.

• Encourageinvolvementwithactivitiesoncampus.WewantstudentstobeinvolvedinUniversityopportunitieswhilestrikingabalancewiththeacademicworkload.Involvementinatleastoneextracurricularactivityisanimportantwaytomeetnewfriends,relievestress,assistastudentinacclimatingtothecampus,andcompletethecollegeexperience.

• Encouragehealthyeatinghabitsandgettingplentyofrest.Don’tforgetbreakfast!

• Roommateissuesmayarise.Itisimportantthatstudentsworktheseoutwithoutparent/guardian(s)orfamilymemberssteppinginontheirbehalf.Thisisoneofthemostvaluablelearningoccurrencesthatastudentwillexperience.AdvisethemtoseeksupportfromResidenceLifestaffmembers,includingResidentAssistantsorAreaCoordinators.

• Studentsareencouragedtomeetwiththeiracademicadvisorearlyduringtheirfirstsemester.Thisrelationshipwillbeinstrumentalintheiracademic,career,andpersonalexplorationwhileatFairfieldUniversityandbeyond.
