ROBOTICS – Island School hosted the FIRST Lego League competition and our LegoMasters are the 2013 Hawai‘i District Tournament Champions for Kaua‘i. They also won the award for Robot Performance. Congratulations!

CHEMISTRY – Ms. Haverkort’s students did a laboratory activity on chemical reactions. In groups of four, students observed a chemical reaction between aluminum and copper

chloride. First the bright green solid copper chloride was added to water and turned blue during the dissolving process. Then aluminum was added which reacted with the chloride ions in the solution to form a dark red solid, aluminum chloride, while copper remained dissolved in the water. The chemical reaction was very exciting to watch because heat was released in the process (which is how we know it was a chemical reaction), and it was interesting to see the energetic reaction.

SENIOR UPDATE – Lansen Eto was accepted at University of Portland in Portland, OR, and University of Hawai‘i at Manoa; Kristina Scheppers has been accepted at University of Oregon in Eugene, OR; Kelly Kay has been accepted

at Concordia University in Irvine, CA, and at University of Portland in OR.

SPELLING BEE – The Middle School Spelling Bee will be held in the Main Hall on Wednesday, Nov. 21, from 11:50-1:20. 13 spellers will compete.

UKULELE – A group of students volunteered to come on stage to play with Daniel Ho at the concert last Friday. Their names were put into a drawing to win a KoAloha ukulele. Congratulations to Lansen Eto, whose name was drawn. Kudos to those pictures at right who took this great opportunity to play with a master!

TALENT SHOW – Ten performances entertained middle and high school students at the end of Art Day Friday at the Talent Show. The quality of talent was impressive and ranged from singers and musicians to dancers and stand-

up comedy. Organized by Student Government with emcees, 8th graders Sydney Agudong and Summer Mead, the show opened and closed with songs by the band, OCDC. The judges chose senior, Margo Latif as overall winner, accompanied by drummer Kellan Wortman and bass guitar player Ian Cowden.

ACTING – Jim Bray’s high school acting class will present Scene Work, a collection of short plays, on Monday, Nov. 18, in the Weinberg Gymnasium at 6:00 p.m. Admission is free. Everyone is invited!

Come along on a fantastic adventure with talented Island School 5th graders, as they present the musical theatre production, “The Phantom Tollbooth,” November 15-17, at the Island School “theatre.”

Based on the beloved children’s book of the same name written by Norton Juster, the story revolves around a ten-year-old named Milo, who is so bored with the world that nothing ever interests him. One day Milo discovers a large toy tollbooth sitting in his room. Upon driving through the Tollbooth’s gates, Milo commences a marvelous adventure, discovering new ways to exceed expectations and explore possibilities. Armed with a dictionary and pencil and accompanied by a trusty “watch” dog, Tock, Milo journeys through the lands of Dictionopolis and Digitopolis, successfully battling the Demons of Ignorance, and returns Rhyme and Reason to the Land of Wisdom. He learns many things about words and numbers over the course of his journey, but perhaps the most important lesson he takes with him is that everything we learn has a purpose and everything we do affects our surroundings.

“Our 5th graders have really embraced the spirit of the musical by coming together as a team and using different art forms to present their interpretation of

this classic story. They’ve rehearsed every day since mid-August and I am really proud of them!” said Peggy Ellenburg, Drama Director at Island School. The students also created the colorful sets and props for their show.

Live musical accompaniment will be played by their musical director, Rose Alfiler. “This class has such a love of music,” said Alfiler. “The students took to the music and the clever lyrics right away.” Their homeroom teacher, Cindy Wortmann, loved hearing her students burst into song throughout the day.

Fifth grader Braydon King, who plays five parts in the play, said the most fun part about the production is “learning how to act and watching all of my friends play their parts. I’m excited for our performances!”

Performances will be held Friday and Saturday evenings, November 15 and 16, at 7:00 p.m. as well as Sunday, November 17, at 3:00 p.m. at the Island School “theatre” in Puhi, behind Kaua‘i Community College. Performances are open to the public and the show suitable for all ages. Tickets may be purchased in advance for $4 each / $15 for a family pass at the Island School Office, from cast members, by calling 246-0233 ex. 262 or by emailing [email protected]. Tickets are $6 each / $20 for a family pass at the door.
