    Dear Parents,

This week we hosted the MS Parent Co ee where members of the MS team engaged parents in a variety of processing ac vi es revolving around Teens and Technology. Feedback from this session was incredibly posi-

ve and many parents requested addi onal informa on to support and guide them as they strive to provideappropriate parameters for technology use at home. It is rather mely to note that the American Academy ofPediatrics has just published new screen - me guidelines. These are far more nuanced than before in order totake into account the ubiquitous nature of screens in today’s media rich society. If you are planning on devel-oping a set of guidelines at home, you might want to use this research -based resource as a star ng point.

Within the workshop, parents worked collabora vely to iden fy their biggest concerns regarding teens andtechnology. These can be seen in the accompanying photo. In order help parents answer their concerns, weshared a valuable parent resource - www.comonsensemedia.org. CommonSense is dedicated to helping kids thrive ina world of media and technology and haseverything from the latest research to

prac cal ps and guidelines. If you areunfamiliar with the resource, we strongrecommend that you bookmark it!

An addi onal topic that was raised in theco ee, was the concept of parents model-ling the type of technology habits that theywould like their children to mirror. Do ourwords and ac ons consistently align? When there is a limited degree of align-ment, a “do as a say, not as I do” mentalitycan be cul vated and this can cause some

parents to be perceived as hypocri cal bytheir teenaged children. This poignantvideo highlights some of the nega vebehaviors children and adults may haveslipped into without realizing the impact oftheir ac ons. Take a look and then re ecton your own technology habits and askyourself - Am I modelling healthy mediahabits to my child/children?

Changes to the English Honors Program for the 2016 -17 Academic Year For the past two years, there has been some misalignment between Middle School and High School regarding the number of sec ons ofEnglish Honors o ered to students – Grade 8 currently has two sec ons while Grade 9 has only one. This has led to disappointment asstudents move from English Honors in Grade 8, but then do not make the single sec on of English Honors o ered in Grade 9. In an a emptto realign this discrepancy, High School English Honors will expand to two sec ons in both Grade 9 and Grade 10, star ng in August 2016.

Along with this expansion there will be some curriculum changes to the en re Grade 7 -10 English Honors program. The aims of these mod-i ca ons are: 1. To give the program a more literary focus, 2. To prepare students to sit the English AP Literature and Composi on exam at the end of Grade 10. This would be op onal. 3. To make the English Honors curriculum more accessible to high -achieving students who enjoy and value literary studies.

We feel that this re -designed program will provide the most e ec ve prepara on for those students likely to enroll in the IB A Literature atHigher Level in Grades 11 and 12.

If you have any ques ons about these changes, please feel f ree to contact your child's English Honors teacher or the respec ve EnglishProgram Leaders (MS - Mr. David Burke, HS - Mr. Robert Butcher).

    NEED TO KNOW:

A Gentle Reminder to all Parents:

On days when your child needs to be absentfrom school, we ask that a parent inform the

Middle School O ce before 7:30 A.M. viaphone at

    840 -8550 / 553 or via email at

[email protected] It is the responsibility of your child to communicate

with their teacher when they return to school tomake up for work missed as a result of any

    absences.

Congratula ons to the MS Strings and Choir Students!

Two amazing concerts took place this week - the All Strings Concert on Monday and the All Choirs Concert on Wednesday. These two upli ing performances showcased the depth of learning that is engendered in the MS Music program. In talkingwith students about their recent performance experience, it was warming to hear students talk about how much they hadgrown both individually and collec vely and how being a member of choir or strings had fostered a strong sense of belonging.

Please know that ISM records all performances and uploads them to ISM’s YouTube channel. If you want to gain access tothis channel, please email [email protected]

We would like to wish you all a very relaxing long weekend!

Kind Regards, Rachel Harrington, Middle School Principal
