Uttarakhand RRD Program – Update 7 (January, 2014)

Working with the underserved communities

for over two decades now, PSP continues to

make significant contributions and a

genuine difference in people’s lives.

Promptly responding to the Uttarakhand

catastrophe of June, 2013, and as part of its

commitment towards the communities, PSP

started a comprehensive 3-phase `Relief-

Rehabilitation-Development Program’ in

the state. As on date, 2 Relief Camps (for

the children) and 11 Vocational Training

Centres (for the women) are being

operated through dedicated project teams

to alleviate the sufferings of the local

inhabitants, help them overcome the loss &

trauma and then restore normalcy in their

lives and the region.

We at PSP have always believed that making a genuine difference at the community level is

paramount and as such we have always strived to work with the 3 Ps viz.,

- Passion;

- Patience; &

- Perseverance

wherever we are working for the underserved and unserved members of the community.

Working in the affected villages of Uttarakhand for over seven months now, our teams have

exhibited the same passion & compassion and working day-in-day-out to help the victims of the

Uttarakhand tragedy overcome the trauma that had otherwise dented their lives to the core.

While PSP was amongst the organizations who promptly responded to this tragedy and

commenced relief & rehabilitation operations, it is also amongst the very few organizations who

are still actively involved in the more important phase of rebuilding & rehabilitation.

As on date, we are taking every care of almost 150 children from the 2 Vatsalya Care Centres

established in the state, providing not just the love & care that VatsalyaGram is synonymous with,

but also extending the complete gamut of Vatsalya package of Shelter, Food & Nutrition,

Healthcare, Education, & Overall Wellbeing to ensure that practically all needs & requirements of

these children are conclusively met.

From our 11 Vocational Training Centres across 11 different affected villages, we are directly

touching the lives of around 500 women & young girls, who come to these Centres to obtain skills

in tailoring, stitching & embroidery. In doing so, they are not only being empowered to earn a

living for themselves and their families but are being positively engaged to mitigate the trauma of

the tragedy.

More importantly, we intend to and are committed to continue our works & activities in the state

on a permanent basis.

In the meantime, and something which we are delighted to share with all those who have

supported us in any manner whatsoever for starting this Program and bringing it to the level it is

today, is a formal endorsement of our relief & rehabilitation works by the `Chief Minister, Govt. of

Uttarakhand’.

While we thank the Govt. of Uttarakhand for acknowledging our role in this shared responsibility,

we are ever thankful to all of YOU, for this would not have been possible without your kindness &

support. So THANK YOU!

Child care & development has always been central to our mandate and forms the crux of our

interventions at Uttarakhand also. With the direct responsibility of around 150 children, it makes

all the more sense.

And we are going all out to

ensure that these children are

optimally taken care of, not

only in terms of essential

needs but also the

psychological needs, the

sense of belonging.

Our works & activities for the children at

Uttarakhand have found the appreciation

of the local communities and others who

know of our works. This appreciation

found a unique form an expression when

2 children, who were found breaking

stones on the road by some BSF (Border

Security Force) personnel, were brought

to the Guptkashi Shelter Home (Vatsalya

Centre-2) by the BSF Commandant. The

Vatsalya family at this centre now has 2

more siblings.

As envisioned, we have set up four (4) new Vocational Training Centres taking the total tally to

eleven (11). The total number of women & young girls who benefit from these 11 Centres is over

400. From our two (2) Project Offices, one office manages 7 while the other manages the

remaining 4 of these Centres, while also undertaking the community mobilization part.

A lot of these beneficiaries have undergone 6-months training and are able to make different

types of dresses.

While some of these beneficiaries who have completed their training are being helped with job-

works, a few would be retained by the project to serve as Trainers for the Vocational Training

Centres that are established in future.

Going forward, we also intend to strengthen this initiative of empowering the women & young

girls by imparting training in other vocations. Under this endeavour, we had been holding

deliberations with the `National Institute of Design, Gujarat’ (an autonomous Institution under the

aegis of the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Govt. of India) to identify viable courses which can

be started at the existing / new VT Centres in the intervened villages.

A team from NID visited the project in this month and conducted a Need-assessment Survey

spanning one week to recommend additional vocations under which the beneficiaries would be

trained (using SHG Model) by them to further expand their livelihood opportunities.

A lot of physical wounds may have healed, but the battle to heal the emotional wounds and

trauma is far from over.

Thanks to the inspiring support we have received for our Uttarakhand-RRD Program, we have

reached this far and positively impacted so many lives. However, we are in this for the long haul

and remain committed to strengthen our activities and ensure that the beneficiaries of our

Program gain greater control of their lives.

Come, participate in this responsibility of creating HOPE for them.
