This program is an intense, fast-paced introduction to the legal system, basic concepts of paralegalism, and legal research and writing. Become a Paralegal Students who complete this course gain skills in drafting documents, interviewing, trial preparation, briefing cases, and legal research and writing, utilizing the UNM Law Library, WESTLAW, and visits to observe motions and trials in the courtroom. Upon successful completion and at the recommendation of the instruc- tor, students are eligible to apply for a mentored paralegal internship in government setting or private law firms. Over 70% of our students who have successfully completed both the Paralegal Certificate Course and Internship are currently working as paralegals or enrolled in law school. Paralegal Post-Baccalaureate Certificate Course This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the legal system and basic concepts of paralegalism, including civil procedure, litigation, evidence, interviewing, law office management, ethics, and Court rules and procedures. Students will learn basic library and online research, in addition to legal analysis and legal writing skills. Paralegal Internship The internship is designed to expand knowledge through supervised placements in govermental and other legal settings. The student intern will work under the direct supervision of an attorney or paralegal in a govermental agency or law office as arranged and approved by the instructor. Completion of UNM Continuing Education Paralegal Certificate course with a GPA of 3.0 or better and instructor recommenda- tion is required for enrollment in the internship.
