WALTER SCOTT’S

Is it true that Jennifer Jason Leigh had retired from act-ing before starring in The Hateful Eight?

—Jo F., Rio Rancho, N.M.A: Not really. It was more that Leigh, 54, who was nominated for an Oscar for The Hateful Eight and will next be seen in Amityville: The Awakening, in theaters April 1, thought that acting was done with her. Despite her long career, when she took time off after giving birth to son Rohmer, 6, the roles stopped coming. “In this business, if you step away,

even for a short amount of time, it is hard to get back in,” she says. But then director Quentin Tarantino called for The Hateful Eight and every-thing turned around.

Will George Lopez’s new series be a reality show?

—Susan M., Rowland Heights, Calif.

A: It will be a fi ctional-ized semibiographical series in the same way that HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm focused on Larry David’s exploits, or Showtime’s Episodesparodies Matt LeBlanc. TV Land’s Lopez, pre-miering March 30, will follow the native Cali-fornian, 54, as he deals with the daily issues of being a successful Hispanic-American comedian. “I’m excited that TV Land realizes that my personal chal-lenges, insecurities and inability to con-nect are all part of my charm,” he says.

The former Two and a Half Men and That ’70s Show star, 38, saddles up for his new Netflix comedy, The Ranch, premiering April 1. He plays a washed-up football player who returns home to live with his father (Sam Elliott) and brother (Danny Masterson) on their spread in Colorado. Being from Iowa, did The Ranch appeal to your heartland roots? The base of the show is middle-American ideas and values, and most times when you see those on TV, people are making fun of them. In The Ranch, we embrace those values, which I had around me growing up.

What do you like about playing a “cerebrally chal-lenged” character like Colt? I think the character just lent himself to that. Comically, I always fi nd simple to be very, very funny. Any chance that your wife, Mila Kunis, might guest star and make it a That ’70s Show reunion? We’ll see. She was on Two and a Half Men, so may-be. If I was a viewer, I wouldn’t be surprised to see some of our other castmates show up.How has fatherhood—to 18-month-old daughter Wyatt Isabelle—changed your life? It takes what-ever table you’re sitting at, fl ips it upside down and switches all your priorities around. It’s unexplain-able. I have a new number-one priority. Only parents understand the absolute awe of parenthood.

WALTER SCOTT ASKS ... ASHTON KUTCHER

Bridesmaid to BOSSMelissa McCarthy, 45, began her reign as one of America’s favorite funny females in the CBS TV series Mike & Molly, now in its sixth and fi nal season. But she quickly segued into movies with Bridesmaids, The Heat and Spy. Now she’s starring in The Boss, in theaters April 8. Here are fi ve fun facts about the Illinois native.1. She was a high school cheerleader.

2. Author, model, TV host and comedian Jenny McCarthy is her cousin.

3. Her fi rst dream was to be a fashion designer, which came true when she launched Seven7, her own line of women’s clothing, in 2015.

4. One of her hobbies is home renovation.

5. Husband Ben Falcone directed her in Tammy and The Boss and made appearances in Tammy, Spy, Bridesmaids, Identity Thief and The Heat.

Is there a drama in Kutcher’s future? Go to Parade.com/ashton to fi nd out.

Ask MarilynBy Marilyn vos Savant

I’m a woman who was born in 1970, with a life expectancy of 75 years, according to birth-year tables. Does this mean that most women born in 1970 should expect to live about 75 years? Or what?

—Sandra E., Detroit, Mich.

The term “life expectancy” refers to the age at which 50 percent of the people (further defined by sex, race, etc.) born in a given year are expected to still be alive. So in the year 2045, half of the women born in 1970 will al-ready be gone, and the other half can expect to live anywhere from another day to another 25 years or even longer.

However, the longer you live, the longer your life expectancy. You’re 45 years old now. If you look at the birth-year tables when you’re 60, you’ll see that your life expectancy has in-creased! Why? Because by then, you will have successfully navi-gated from age 45 to 60. So you’ll be among a group that is living longer, with a correspondingly longer median.

This recalculation goes on throughout your life. For ex-ample, if you were 80 years old now, your life expectancy would be 90 years, meaning that half of your age-mates will be gone by then, but the other half will be alive and can expect to live even longer. (In this calculation, only sex was taken into consider-ation.) Today, more than 50,000 Americans are centenarians, and about 80 percent of them are female.

Jonathan and Drew Scott, known today to millions as the stars of HGTV’s Property

Brothers, always “felt destined to do something big,” says Drew. “Growing up—and this may sound weird—I always knew we were different.”

The brothers, now 37, started their first business at age 7, making nylon-wrapped, rosette-studded hangers. The company, called JAM Enterprise—for Jon, Andrew (Drew’s full name) and Mom—even had a slogan: “We take care of your hang-ups.”

“We would go door-to-door in our neighborhood, and people thought it was cute,” says Jonathan. Things got serious when a neighbor who owned a chain of stores started buying hangers by the thou-sands. That train to success hasn’t stopped since.

The Scott brothers cur-rently have four different shows on HGTV: Property Brothers, Buying and Selling, Property Brothers at Home on the Ranch and Brother vs. Brother. In their real estate business, they complete some 50 full-blown renovations every year, up to 10 at a time. They also have a furniture line, Scott Living, and a production company, Scott Brothers En-tertainment, which they run

with their older brother, J.D. If you’ve seen them singing

around the fire pit on one of their shows, you won’t be surprised to hear that they recently recorded two country tracks—“Hold On” and “Let the Night Shine In”—and performed at Nashville’s fa-mous Bluebird Cafe. On April 4, they will release their first book—Dream Home: The Prop-erty Brothers’ Ultimate Guide to Finding & Fixing Your Perfect House—designed to help the rest of us live the dream. From brown shag to big dreams The house the brothers grew up in—on a ranch with horses in Maple Ridge, Canada, a suburb of Vancouver—was

not a dream home by any stretch. “It was, like, brown shag carpet, and we had one bathroom for a family of five,” says Jonathan. But they saw firsthand from their parents how to go after big goals. Their

father arrived from Scotland as a teenager, dreaming of becoming a cowboy like he’d seen in the movies—and he achieved just that, working as a stuntman in films.

Their mom was a paralegal for a law firm. As the family built on their land, the boys loved chiming in with ideas.

“Even at 10 years old,

Jonathan and I started saying things like, ‘Hey, what about this for the prop-erty?’ ” recalls Drew. “And I remember my parents saying, ‘You’re 10. What do you know about real estate? Go play with toys.’ ”

Drew and Jonathan bought their first house at 18 with just $250 down, and sold it one year later for a $50,000 prof-it. Says Drew, “We never thought of it as a career until we were coming out of high school.” For the most part, Drew manages the business side of the com-pany and Jonathan takes on renovations and labor. (“By the way,” Jonathan says to Drew, “I gave myself a raise. I forgot to tell you.”)

Today their dream home is a two-story house on a cul-de-sac, 15 minutes from the Las Vegas Strip. They bought it in 2011, and during renovations they came up with some find-your-own-dream-home secrets, which they share in their book. Here is a sampling.

5 CHANGES That Make a Big Difference1. DeclutterIf you can’t afford to redo something, undo it. “It is the simplest thing,” says Jonathan. “We have so much excess crap we don’t need that some-body else could use.”

2. Paint “It’s the second easi-est thing to do,” says Jonathan. To choose your best palette, “go to Google images or Pinter-est and look at pictures. If you don’t see your color scheme, it probably means your place looks kind of dated.”

3. Make the most of the unused space “I’ve attached a magnetic strip underneath cabinets for spices in mason jars. Or you can get little baskets that slide onto your bottom shelf and give you space,” Jonathan says.

4. Organize your garage walls “Do custom built-ins or even just open racks on your walls,” sug-gests Drew. “Taking things off the ground level, like bikes or boxes, can really open up a space.”

5. Get a clos-et organiza-tion system “If you look at most closets, it’s one shelf and one rack with so much wasted space,” says Jonathan. Add drawer systems on shelves or shoe holders.

their new book.

artwork. “The more bold you go with something,” says Jona-than, “the faster it goes out of style.” And the less attractive it becomes for a potential buyer down the road.

Renovating? Have an open mind “In the very, very beginning, don’t talk budget,” Jonathan says. “Write down absolutely everything on your wish list—it doesn’t matter if it’s an Olympic-sized pool or a golden toilet.” Then mark each item with “Must have,” “Nice to have” or “Doesn’t matter.” You’ll learn a lot as the creative and financial sides of your brain go to war: “These are the things that I would love” vs. “What can I afford?”

Invest in infrastructure “People are always focused on the aesthetic—‘Ooh, I want this countertop!’ They don’t think about the fact that all of the windows are single-paned and they’re losing a lot of energy, or that there’s not adequate insulation in the at-tic,” Jonathan says. “The stuff inside the walls, the efficiency of the home—that matters.”

Of course, in the end, “no one becomes attached to the collection of studs and a roof,” says Jonathan. “They become attached to the memories they make in their home.” That’s how you really make a dream home. And it’s like their parents always told them, Drew says: “ ‘Never be afraid to dream.’ ”

From the creators of the original Jitterbug® comes the redesigned Jitterbug5. Combining thoughtful features and innovative services with incredible ease of use, the Jitterbug is a cell phone that you’ll actually enjoy using every day.

EASY TO USE Today, cell phones are hard to hear, dif cult to dial and overloaded with features you may never use. That’s not the case with the Jitterbug. A backlit keypad with big buttons and large, legible numbers makes it easy to call family and friends. The powerful speaker ensures every conversation is loud and clear. Plus, straightforward YES and NO buttons make navigating the menu simple.

EASY TO ENJOY Unlike most cell phones that need to be charged every day, the Jitterbug was designed with one of the longest-lasting batteries on the market, so you won’t have to worry about running out of power. There’s also a built-in camera that makes it easy and fun to capture and share your favorite photos.
