Murfreesboro, Tenn., has joined agrowing list of midsized towns in theU.S. that are embroiled in conflictsover proposed mosques being built orbought in their neighborhoods. Including Murfreesboro, residentshave risen up against mosques in twoother Tennessee towns; in StatenIsland, N.Y.; Sheboygan County,Wis.; and the Sheepshead Bayneighborhood of Brooklyn, as well asthe proposed mosque and IslamicCultural Center near Ground Zero,which has garnered some of the mostheated battles. A new Quinnipiac Poll shows thatwell over half of New Yorkers – 52percent oppose building a mosquenear the 9/11 site. Only 31 percentsupport it. Among ethnic groups, Hispanicsshow the greatest opposition to theGround Zero mosque, 60 to 19percent. Among religious groups, Jews andwhite Catholics expressed the greatestopposition, both at 66 percent.

Those who support building themosques say the opposition comesfrom growing Islamophobia, racismand ignorance. Those who oppose adamantly denythat bigotry is involved. In Murfreesboro, Republicancongressional candidate Lou AnnZelenik says she’s not against thebuilding of a mosque, but she doesoppose the construction of an Islamiccultural center, which she says wouldbe an Islamic training facility. “Thishas nothing to do with religion, buteverything to do with a radicalagenda,” she says. But in Staten Island, fears that amosque will become a breedingground for homegrown terror arerooted in reports about who’sfinancing the deal . Residents of the heavily Catholicneighborhood are in an uproar over aMuslim group’s plans to buy ashuttered convent and convert it intoa Mosque. Besides concerns aboutincreased traffic and little parking,t h e r e a r e d i s t u r b i n g r e p o r t ssurrounding the organization, theMuslim America Society, which isfunding the purchase. According to the InvestigativeProject on Terrorism, MAS has ties tothe Muslim Brotherhood, a 100-year-old movement that is widely regardedas one of the most influential Islamicfundamentalist groups in the world.Its stated agenda has been to spreadIslam and Shariah law throughout theWest. Some of its members alsoreportedly created Hamas.“The Muslim American Society wascreated in the early 1990s as the def a c t o a r m o f t h e M u s l i mBrotherhood,” says Steve Emerson,

He says the MAS and MuslimBrotherhood c la im to opposeterrorism, but “behind closed doorsthey support terrorism and havedefended various terrorists that havebeen convicted in the United Statessince 9/11.” But Ibrahim Ramey, the human andcivi l r ights director for MASFreedom, adamantly denies anyc o n n e c t i o n t o t h e M u s l i mBrotherhood, Hamas or terrorism.“There are people who don’t likeMuslims and don’t like Muslims intheir neighborhood who have beenvociferously and consistently tryingt o l i n k M A S w i t h f o r e i g norganizations and movements, butthat simply isn’t true,” Ramey says.“We are not agents of Hamas nor dowe answer to them, nor do weprovide money for them, nor are wepart of any conflict that they havewith the U.S. Government, or anyauthorities in the United States.” Note the careful and evasivewording. There doesn’t seem to beany explicit denial of a link to theBrotherhood, at least in Ramey’swords as reported here. And no onewas charging that he “answers” toHamas. Emerson says his group hasdocumentation linking MAS with theMuslim Brotherhood. He also saysMAS has been on a spending spree inthe last two years, either buyingproperty to establish mosques, as inStaten Island, or taking over existingmosques, like the huge Dal al-Hidrahin Northern Virginia and the veryprominent Islamic Society of Bostonin Massachusetts.“The way to gain influence among

Theyshould be required to register, paytheir taxes, pay a fine, and learnEnglish. They must get right with thelaw before they can get in line andearn their citizenship —… all his proposal does is put illegalimmigrants on the same standing aslegal immigrants, aside from the extraf ine . Which means that legalimmigration no longer makes sense.It makes more sense for them to

immigrate illegally, sign a piece ofpaper, pay a fine and be on the samefooting as the people who followedthe rules. Obama pretends that there are twoextremes in play. Either deporteveryone or legalize everyone. Notonly is this a strawman, but as it turnsout Obama himself comes down onthe side of “legalize everyone… butmake them pay a fine”. While Obama pretends that he’sbeing a moderate, he’s actuallystaking out a polar position, andanyone who stayed awake through hisspeech could hear that for himself.But no need to worry, according toBarry… The southern border is more securetoday than at any time in the past 20years. But as with the Statue of Liberty, andthe number of US States, and othersuch pesky details, Obama seems tohave made a minor mistake here. Hedidn’t mean that the southern borderis more secure than any time in thepast 20 years. He meant the southernborder is more secure than it was 200years ago. At least the entertainment industry iskeeping its head about the wholething. To wit this calmly reasonedand well thought out letter from oneConor Oberst I agree with you in part, and theradio host you quoted, that theauthors and supporters of SB1070could give a s**t whether or not myband, or any other Artist, ever playsArizona again. Of all types of shofar, therams horn shofar is the most preferredideally because it was a ram that wassacrificially slaughtered by thepatriarch Abraham instead of his sonIsaac. The shofar is used to make anumber of dedicated shofar soundsbut before we get into these it wouldbe prudent to learn how to blow thisinstrument. Only a few persons wholly excel inthe masterful blowing of a shofar, beit the ram’s horn shofar or that madefrom another type of horn. This fact iseven supported in the Talmud whereblowing the shofar is recognized asbeing a skill and not hard work. Togain mastery you will be required todedicate adequate time for practice.The first step for anyone who intendsto become a ba’al tekiah is to selectthe type of shofar that will best suitthem. Rather than pegging the choiceon aspects of appearance and size youshould consider the feel of the shofarand the manner in which it sounds.

The shofar, unlike other conventionalinstruments, only has a mouthpieceand this is the only point at which youcan alter the notes produced. Thiscalls for adeptness in the use of boththe lips and tongue. The best shofarfor any individual will be that whosemouthpiece allows for a comfortablepositioning of the lips. Get ready tomake a note now. Start by moistening your lips at thefarthest right-hand corner and holdthe ram’s horn shofar firmly at thispoint. At this point your lips shouldbe tightly sealed. When you feelready, create a tiny hole (in the lips)against the shofar and then forcefullyblow air into the instrument. To dothis well, assume that you want tomake a Bronx cheer. The resultingsound if perfectly executed should bepowerful and bright. For longevity,fill your chest with enough breath andthen let this out in a controlledmanner. You can use two fingers tosteady the ram’s horn shofar next tothe lips. The tighter your lips are, thehigher the pitch that will be produced.Always ensure that you don’t letexcessive saliva into the shofar as thiswill serve to make the sound croaky. Having learnt how to produce noteson the shofar it is time that we learnabout the three different sounds thatare significant to Rosh Hashana. Thefirst of these is the Tekiah and it isdenoted by a single, straight and

prolonged blast. The main concept ofRosh Hashana is to appreciate that theAlmighty God is the supreme King ofthe entire Universe. When the ram’shorn shofar produces the Tekiah itdenotes God’s coronation as King.This is also an individual call for allfai thful to help each other inrecognizing God’s supremacy. For the Shevarim sound, the shofarproduces three medium blasts in awailing mood. This sound depicts thedisappointment of persons who havefailed to make the most of their fullpotential in a past year. The Shevarimstirs people to aim higher in the NewYear by making the most of theopportunities available to them. The final sound is the Teruah. Theseare nine blasts made in rapidsuccession.
