Most people have no idea what rareearth elements are, but a wide arrayof the technologies that we use everysingle day are dependent on them.Without rare earth elements, wewould have no hybrid car batteries,flat screen televisions, cell phones oriPods. Without rare earth elements,the entire “green economy” wouldnot be able to function, becausea l m o s t a l l e m e r g i n g g r e e ntechnologies use them. Not only that,but rare earth elements are used bythe U.S. military in radar systems,missile-guidance systems, satellitesand aircraft electronics. Without rareearth elements, the U.S. military (andmilitaries all over the globe) wouldnot be able to function. There are 17key rare earth elements that we relyon every day. But there is a hugeproblem. China owns more than 85percent of the known global reservesof rare earth elements. Right now,the rest of the world is absolutelydependent on China’s exports ofthese metals. Without these Chineseexports, the western world wouldquickly run out of these preciousresources. But in just a few years,the rapidly expanding Chineseeconomy will gobble up the entiredomestic production of Chinese rareearth elements. So what will the restof the world do at that point? This is a major problem that youaren’t hearing a lot about in themainstream news. But analysts are now predicting thatby 2012 this could be a tremendouscrisis. So exactly what are rare earthelements? Well, rare earth elements are a groupof 17 relatively rare chemicalelements that you can find on theperiodic table. These rare metalshave names you may not be familiarwith such as lanthanum, cerium,tantalum, neodymium and europium.As mentioned above, they are used inproducts that we use every day suchas laptop computers, iPhones,magnets, catalytic converters, nightvision goggles and wind turbines.

These metals are not well known, butthey are absolutely crucial to ourway of life. So what is going to happen when westart running out of them? According to The Independent, themove towards “green technology”will cause a dramatic increase indemand for rare earth metals in theyears ahead. In fact, it is beingprojected that the world will need200,000 tons of rare earth elementsby the year 2014. But analysts fear that China maydrop exports of rare earth elements toexactly zero tons by 2012. Can anyone else see a problemforming? Last summer, one leaked reportindicated that Chinese authoritieswere already considering a completeexport ban of the most critical of therare earth elements. But while we may speculate whenthe complete ban is coming, the truthis that China has already moved todramatically cut back exports of themetals. China recently announced that theyhave cut export quotas for rare earthelements by 72 percent for the second

half of 2010. The U.S. governmentreacted quite angrily to this news andwarned that this could potentiallycause a trade war. TechNewsDaily recently quoted W.D a v i d M e n z i e , c h i e f o f t h einternational minerals section at theU.S. Geological Survey, regardingthe coming shortage of rare earthelements….“Countries and companies that haveor plan to develop industries thatneed rare earth minerals to makeproducts are concerned about China’sgrowing consumption, which theyfear will eliminate China’s exports ofrare earths.” So what needs to be done? Well, nations and corporations thatuse rare earth elements need to startweaning themselves off the supplycoming from China. But there is a huge problem. That cannot be done overnight. According to a recent report by theU.S. Government AccountabilityOffice, building an independent U.S.supply chain for rare earth elementscould take up to 15 years. So what in the world will we do untilthen?

That is a very good question. The truth is that those running theU.S. government are just not verygood at thinking strategically. The U.S. Government AccountabilityOffice report mentioned above listsMountain Pass, California as perhapsthe largest non-Chinese rare earthdeposit in the world. But it almost fell into Chinese handsunnoticed. You see, the mine in Mountain Passis owned by Unocal, and in 2005 aChinese bid for Unocal almostsucceeded. Yes, the Chinese were trying tostrengthen their monopoly on rareearth elements and it almost worked. Not that they don’t have the rest ofthe world in a very difficult situationalready. The truth is that if China cut off theexport of all rare earth elements tothe rest of the world tomorrow, itwould throw the global economy intoabsolute chaos. That is a lot of power for China tohave. Three rounds of impotentUnited Nations Security Councilsanctions have not acted as adeterrent in stopping Iran from itspath of uranium enrichment. In fact, it would appear that anyfurther sanctions in the next severalmonths will prove equally futile aswell. As a result, many internationalexperts now believe that Iran is onlysix months away from enrichinguranium and the procurement of itsown nuclear weapons. The reality of a nuclear Iran presentsserious ramifications for the globalcommunity to consider. First, thee n t i r e M i d d l e E a s t w i l l b etransformed into a nuclear arms raceso other countries can maintainmilitary equality with Iran. In addition, terrorist organizationslike Hamas and Hezbollah will gaindirect access to new Iranian weaponsof mass destruction. Iraq wouldbecome increasingly destabilized andthe existence of the state of Israel willbe directly threatened. Consider that, for many years, Iranhas made no secret of its dubiouslong- te rm in ten t ions . I s rae l ’sdest ruct ion has long been i tsfundamenta l objec t ive . I ran’sSupreme leader, Ali Khamenei, saidin a sermon on Iranian television onDecember 15, 2000, “Iran’s position,which was first expressed by theImam Khomeini and stated severaltimes by those responsible, is that thecancerous tumor called Israel must beuprooted from the region.” Iranian threats have only increasedduring the last several years. IranianPresident Mahmoud Ahmadinejadhas repeatedly called for action to“wipe Israel off the map”. Then, hisgovernment sponsored a conferencetitled “A World Without Zionism” inOctober, 2005. His most recentoutrage was calling Israel “a stinkingcorpse” on the occasion of its 60thbirthday. Indeed, Ahmadinejad’s intentionswere unequivocal when he told acrowd of thousands gathered at a rally

in support of the Palestinians inTehran: “This regime, thanks to God,has lost the reason for its existence.Efforts to stabilize this fake (Israeli)regime, by the grace of God, havecompletely failed. You should believethat this regime is disappearing”. Ahmadinejad also called Israelileaders a “group of terrorists” and hasthreatened any country that supportsthe Jewish state. “You imposed agroup of terrorists … on the region,”Ahmadinejad said, addressing theU.S. and its allies. “It is in your owninterest to distance yourself fromthese c r imina l s… This i s anu l t i m a t u m . D o n ’ t c o m p l a i nt o m o r r o w . ” So, in less than a year, a nuclear Iranunder the leadership of MahmoudAhmadinejad will appear on theworld stage. It will be a country thatsuccessfully defied the sanctions ofthe United Nations and its nuclearcapability will destabilize the entireM i d d l e E a s t a n d t h e w o r l dcommunity. Based on history, it isalso a prospect that would threatenIsrael directly. So, consider that the most importantelection in the world this fall maywell be held in Israel. The KadimaParty primary election will be held inSeptember, 2008. The electionfeatures Israeli Foreign Minister,Tzipi Livni, competing againsthardliner and former Army Chief ofStaff, Shaul Mofaz. Recent publicopinion polls show that the racebetween the two candidates is veryclose. A Mofaz victory could welllead to the bombing by Israel ofvarious nuclear power facilities inIran. It is also possible that the nextKadima leader would not be able toform a coalition government. In thatevent, new elections would be called,and held early in 2009. Currently, theoverwhelming favorite to win anynew election in Israel would beformer Prime Minister, BenjaminNetanyahu. Netanyahu certainly fears the threatof a nuclear Iran. He left few doubtsabout his position on the problem of anuclear Iran in December 2005, whenhe said the solution was “a pre-emptive strike similar to the 1981attack ordered by then-Prime MinisterMenachem Begin that destroyed anunfinished Iraqi nuclear reactor.”” I will continue the traditionestablished by Menachem Begin, whodid not allow Iraq to develop such a

nuclear threat against Israel, and by adaring and courageous act gave ustwo decades o f t r anqu i l i t y , ”Netanyahu told the Maariv Daily. “Ibelieve that this is what Israel has todo.” His statements in November of 2006also point to his increasing fear ofIranian nuclear capability: “It’s 1938and Iran is Germany. And Iran isracing to arm itself with atomicbombs,” Netanyahu told delegates tot h e a n n u a l U n i t e d J e w i s hCommunities General Assembly. Inhis address, he repeated a phraseseveral times, like a chorus, “Believehim and stop him,” Netanyahu said ofI r a n i a n P r e s i d e n t M a h m o u dAhmadinejad. “This is what we mustdo. Everything else pales before this.“While the Iranian president “deniesthe Holocaust,” he is preparinganother Holocaust for the Jewishstate.” The multi-year international crisiswith Iran is nearing its conclusion.Several months from now, Iran willhave successfully achieved thecapability to produce a nuclearweapon . Sad ly , i n t e rna t iona ldiplomacy and an ineffective UnitedNations will not deter Iran from itsnuclear ambition. The result is that the world is well onthe path to another internationalmilitary confrontation. Indeed, theongoing threa ts f rom I ran ianPresident Mahmoud Ahmadinejadappear to leave Israel very littlechoice. In the next six months, Israelwill act to prevent a nuclear Iran. The Scotsman(writer: BassemMroue): A Lebanese journalist saysthat the UNIFIL troops warned theIsraelis that the Lebanese would openfire (it is not clear whether this wasthe “Down, down!” that I mentionedbe fo re [ in t he commen t s ] , o rsome th ing more exp l i c i t ) . Ronith Daher, 32, a Lebanesejournalist who was at the scene, saidshe saw a Unifil peacekeeper askIsrael not to allow the Israeli soldierto cross the fence and warned themthe Lebanese troops would open fire.The Israelis proceeded, however, andLebanese soldiers fired into the air,Ms Daher said. She said the Israelisfired back directly at the Lebanesesoldiers. Note that the Lebanese video streambroadcast by Israel’s Channel 2appears to contradict Daher’s claimthat the Lebanese soldiers fired in theair. First of all, the Lebanese soldiersin the video are pointing their gunstoward the Israelis, NOT visiblyangling them away from the Israelis.In addition, an apparent plume of dustin the v ideo appears to r i seimmediately in front of the Israeliposition, which would not havehappened had the Lebanese fired inthe air.

It is possible (warning: completespeculation) that the UNIFIL troopsheard what was going on among theLebanese troops and tried to warn theIsraelis to take cover (they yelled“ D o w n ! D o w n , ” g e s t u r i n gd o w n w a r d ) . T h i s o c c u r r e dimmediately before the Lebaneseopened fire. Another possibility is that theUNIFIL troops already knew that theLebanese force was planning toattack the Israelis. In either case, whyUNIFIL did not prevent the Lebaneseside from ambushing the tree removalpatrol is a question that UNIFIL mustanswer. The Lebanese Army claimed it hadopened fire on Israeli soldiers whoinfiltrated Lebanese territory. But as UNIFIL and the Lebanese’own video shows, the Israelis were infact in Israel. Furthermore, theIsraelis had told UNIFIL what theyintended to do two weeks in advance.Had the tree in question been inLebanese territory, then UNIFILwould have had ample opportunity toobject and say so. The fact is thatUNIFIL merely sent its observers to apoint where they could observe thetree removal operation. They also toldthe Lebanese army, which sent anambush squad. Bloomberg and the UK’s Telegraph:Maj Gen Eisenkot says that theLebanese army asked Israel for aceasefire. The Israelis believe it to be anisolated incident. The Israelis (Ynet)believe that the officer who orderedthe attack was an extremist. A l J a z e e r a E n g l i s h ( G r e g gC a r l s t r o m ) :* UNIFIL has promised to announce

results of its investigation of the clashon Wed.* Avital Liebovich: “We coordinatedthis operation with Unifil. It was notdone in a secret manner. We havereason to believe this attack was pre-planned by the Lebanese army.”* Nasrallah followed up with aspeech.* The usual attacks spewed from theoffices from Arab officials, who don’tmind not knowing the truth becausethey make it up as they go alonganyway.* Hariri condemned Israel (what else)and demanded that the UN stop thefighting. Unless Hezbollah wants it to gofurther, it won’t go anywhere. Let us ask: 1. Who was the Lebanese officerwho ordered his men to open fire? 2. Why did UNIFIL only address itsrequests to the Israelis, who weredoing what they had arranged to do 2weeks before? 3. Why were not one, not two, butmore than two Hezbollah-affiliatedreporters brought to the scene inadvance just to witness Israelisoldiers cutting down a tree in Israeliterritory? Hint: if you are HassanNasrallah, and you know there’sgoing to be a gunbattle, and you wantto milk it for its PR effect, then yousend your propagandists to spin thestory immediately. 4. Which Lebanese party, writhingunder probable indictment forassassinating the former primeminister, benefits from tension withIsrael? Okay, so that on is a rhetoricalquestion : – ) Finally, we should remember that inthe very possible event that this clash

was planned by Hezbollah, then thepurpose was to distract people fromthe pending UN Special Tribunal forLebanon indictment of a high-levelHezbollah member or members forassassinating Rafik al-Hariri, andmaybe to embarrass the UN in theprocess. I just looked at the video again, and(again assuming that the edits areroughly in order) the Lebanese“warning shots” are from a machinegun, large enough to jostle the camerasignificantly – hardly from a pistol orother small gun that one would expecta warning shot to come from. I think it is pretty clear that the entire“warning shot” scenario is a shammeant to try to square away theobvious evidence of Lebaneseaggression with a face-saving lie. By the way, Al Quds al-Arabi has afawning op-ed glorifying the LAF fori t s pos i t ion of defending thehomeland, and saying that theirbravery shames other Arab countries. The IDF called UNIFILand informed the UN that this workwas going to be done today so thatthey could tell the Lebanese army thatthere was no aggression going on butjust routine maintenance. So how did Reuters and Yahooreport this? By saying that Israelisoldiers had crossed into Lebanonand been fired on, thus implying theLebanese army was acting in self-defense! Other news agencies merelyreported: Israel says the soldiers wereinside Israel; Lebanon says they wereon Lebanese territory. Reuters: “An Israeli soldier is seenon a crane on the Lebanese side of theLebanese - I s r ae l i bo rde r nea rAdaisseh village, southern LebanonAugust 3, 2010.
