MITMediaDesignandInnovationWorkshopthNeha Raje, 6 sem ISE

5 days of non-stop prototyping 5 days of continuous learning and 5 days of fun! That is what the MIT media labs design and innovation workshop was all about.

I t was an a l toge ther nove l experience with parallel tracks, mind-boggling projects, excep-tional people, and awesome food. The classrooms turned into mini labs blooming with inventions where the finest minds from all over the country had gathered.

It was made sure that the teams were a good amalgamation of designers and engineers. The guides were researchers from MIT themselves mentoring the participants in their very best ways.

The workshop was aimed at infusing

creativity into our daily lives with the help of technology to prototype the end product which in turn was aimed at solving practical problems which spanned multiple domains. A field trip on the very first day was all about finding out a problem statement to begin with. The field trip also provided an opportunity to

interact with the possible future users of the model.

The later stages involved presenta-tions, surveys and the pitching of the idea to peers, whereupon the models were final ised with possible incorporations of suggestions made by the researchers. The rapid

prototyping sessions were then shifted into full gear to emulate the end product, on a smaller scale.

The workshop culminated with an open exhibition showcasing the work by all the proud participants and their mentors. It was a very thoughtfully structured program with an open and encour-aging environment, which made learning fun.

There were talks by the researchers, quite a few interesting ones. The INK-Innovation and Knowledge talks held on the last day were truly amazing. Renowned speakers inspired the entirety and instilled confidence in us to pursue our dreams, no matter how crazy they may sound.

Tout ensemble, it was an event worth attending!

Tablets in the classroom is a radical change from the existing methods of using pen and paper. Although it might seem exciting it brings with it its share of problems. First and foremost, tab-lets are a lot more expensive than note-books and some students might not be able to afford them. This causes a dis-parity in the classroom, hampering the atmosphere for learning. Tablets can also be a reason for getting distracted when students are supposed to be concentrating in the class. Mobile phones in the class are not encouraged for the same reason at present. Using a tab-let is a little different from the traditional writing down points in class. This might lead to a deterioration of writing skills and creative thinking as a result of extensive use of the dictio-nary and thesaurus. When words or information is placed in front of a person, the mind finds it extremely hard to come up with new ideas and expressions. It is already doing the rounds that computers them-selves are dumbing people down more than they are enriching their horizons, and this might certainly be a case of that since students might be playing games on the tablet instead of paying

attention in class. Difficulties may arise in subjects where more than just taking notes is required. Drawing diagrams and cir-c u i t s a r e a b i t t e d i o u s a t t h e moment, and it can-not be used on a daily basis comfortably unless these software improve the UI and comfort. Finally, in such a classroom scenario,

the examination would need to be com-pletely redesigned. Students would find it difficult to write answers, and surely the exam cant be held on the tab-let!We see that a lot of problems arise out of bringing the tablet into the class-room, and improvements need to be made in a multitude of areas before it becomes close to reality.

thAnushree Singh, 6 sem ECE

The talk of equipping all students with com-puters has long been a holy grail for class-rooms around the world, but it just has-n't happened.Sure, many c lass rooms

have a computer, but most stu-dents still read out of textbooks,

write with pencils on paper, and take notes off of a chalkboard. The integration of technology into the classroom has been slow but things are changing. The latest computing gadget which has taken the world by storm and is increasingly becoming a learning aide is the tablet. Some educators

are still skeptical as to how it can truly enhance the learning pro-cess, without causing distraction? The tablet itself answers these questions.Tablets are capable of offering enhanced eBooks featur-ing images, video and audio which results in a more integrated learning experience. The appeal of tablets to a college student is obvi-ous: They're thin, lightweight, and spring to life without delay and have longer battery life.In

addition to the thousands of exciting educational apps available, tablets are fully compatible with online teaching and learning plat-forms, which are becoming the norm at colleges and uni-versities. Tablets even elimi-nate paper waste.Using tab-lets in the classroom is an idea that works because most s t u d e n t s a l r e a d y u s e

smartphones and tablets have a similar user interface. This tech-nology that we have can help cre-ate better, smarter and more informed students, so all that we need is its implementation across the globe.

1.What inspired you to continue playing cricket till the age of 41 ?It was always my dream to play for my country. Once I got into the team I wanted to give my everything for the team, just didn't realise how the years flew past by. Retirement was probably the most difficult decision I've taken in my life.

2.Your say on the huge ruckus in media on Sachin's retirement ? Sachin Tendulkar is a great player. A man of his stature knows when to hang up his gloves. No one has any right to ask him to step down, its all upto to him. The kind of player he has been for India, he will always be remembered as one of the greatest legends of the modern game.

3.Role of seniors in a cricket team? Its always good to have a healthy combination of seniors and juniors in any team. Juniors can learn a great

deal from their seniors to improve their game. Senior players have to eventually make place for new blood but the transition can be smooth if they have played together.

4.You have been elected to the Sri L a n k a n p a r l i a m e n t , y o u r humanitarian work for AIDS patients has been recognized with you been appointed UN Ambassa-dor. Recently you participated in

the Jhalak Dikhlaja. You seem to be going very well post retirement. Yeah I think after retirement one needs to involve with something. I have been working the people of my constituency to improve their life. I feel like my life just started at 40. For all these years majority of my time was spent on cricket but now I have a lot of free time to follow my heart.

5.Word of advice for budding cricketers. Nowadays it is very tough to manage academics and sports. But with some help from parents and teachers one can do this. The lure of representing your country in any field is too huge. Parents especially should encourage their wards to participate in sporting activities.

6.Best innings of his career. The 189 scored against India in Sharjah was one of my best.

thKaushal m, 4 sem CSE

As part of its program “Trisha – Hoping for a better tomorrow”, dedicated to the cause of Women Empowerment, the iCare group conducted a debate on the 5th of February, 2013, at the OAT.Though the overal l topic of discussion was “Should capital punishment be given to rape convicts”, the debate also diverged into more general and background issues like sexism and gender bias, societal expectations of women as submissive creatures, and the

inability of the government to protect women from sexual crimes.A large number of ideas were put forward, starting off with a 45 second statement from each of the 8 panellists. While some felt that capital punishment is the right way forward for rape convicts, others were sceptical about the feasibility and effec t iveness of capi ta l punishment. As the debate pro-gressed, it advanced into a discus-sion, with the background issues taking over. And the thorough audience participation ensured that the discussion was open from every

end possible over its entire duration of one and a half hours. Women brought out their fears and appre-hensions in this male dominated society, and people from non-urban areas and smaller towns talked about how the mentality of society there, is noticeably different to that in a city like Bangalore.Almost everyone seemed to agree that the need of the hour is a complete change of mind-set of the society, and a paradigm shift in the way we treat our women. Also, a total revolution in the management of our currently inefficient and

corrupt judiciary system would do no harm whatsoever. However, the one point that got absolutely everyone nodding their heads in approval was the fact that this would be a continuous fight. No battle is won overnight, and neither will this. But we need to keep up the fight. We need to ensure that today's headlines are not found in tomor-row's dustbins.India has a youth population of 325 million. A number so massive, that their unified protests cannot be ignored. And iCare got the youth of PESIT off to a wonderful start.

If one want to organize anything in our college the one person you have to meet is SVS sir. Apart from being extremely pro student, svs sir has a unique penchant to encourage students for non academic activities. Excerpts from the exclusive chat between team papyrus and our cultural convener, Dr. S V Satish

You were the first person to persuade the college management for need of an annual fest, why do you think the fest is necessary? It’s very important for students to participate in various community development programs, sports and cultural activities. Most students who excel in academics do not seem to be drawn towards co-curricular activities. A fest through my eyes is a platform for students to make their own teams, plan and execute an activity, showcase their organizing

skills and present their talent. Facing challenging situations will bring them together and help them face worse scenarios in life at ease.

How has Aatmatrisha grown over the years?Aatmatrisha is a fest which blends technical, cultural, fine arts informal and literary events. Over the years it has had an overwhelming response even from the IIT’s and the IIM’s. It

has grown to a national level fest since when we first initiated the idea for VTU colleges alone.

While academic achievements are important, the college seems to be unwilling to support extracurric-ular activities. Your view on that.I do not agree with this. The Management has created sports and recreation facilities from the very beginning. Students have always

been encouraged to participate in many competitions at the state and national level and the institution has also provided sufficient funds for the same. PESIT has quality sports teams for cricket, basketball, table tennis, badminton and athletics. The dance teams, Sanskrithi, Trance and Pulse have won many events conducted by other institutions.

With the college expanding, do you feel the need to include non academic ac t iv i t i e s in the curriculum? It’s the government and manage-ment’s decision. As per my view, I think it is very much essential to include regular classes on health care in all academic programs.. Physical/cultural/yoga activities should be included in the curricu-lum.

Team Papyrus

We sat down with the Big 3 of team Aatmatrisha 2013 for a small Q&A talk. Niharika Ramesh & Mrinal Parekh, the cultural secretaries and AT event manager, Sathvik Ashok form this Big 3 that leads the AT core team. If you were to drop in to the AT room(or block) you are bound to find atleast one of them cracking their head solving one of the many hurdles that threaten the fest. To be frank we were extremely lucky to have caught them together for this special session. The first question that pops into the head of PESIT-ian is why to attend this AT. Why this AT promises to be better than the previous ones. Upon hearing this Niharika looks up and jokingly says “because we are here!” Apart from the fact that this PESIT's silver jubilee year, the events in this AT have this aura of freshness in-volved with them. The backbone of any fest is the events that are orga-nized during it, so the event heads

have definitely been extremely busy over the last few weeks figuring out which events to be put out to make way for newer ones. In the words of Mrinal, “the events being organized during AT are hatke, the event heads have been very innovative.” One look at the event brochure and you will know that it is absolutely true. The logo of the sponsors is proudly displayed on the brochure making it

evident that the Sponsorship team has been very busy over the past few months. The energy and the enthusiasm in the AT room at 3:30pm is immense; it is chaotic with people running around shouting orders to each other. But somewhere in the middle of all this you could feel the passion with which each and everyone is w o r k i n g m a k i n g t h i s a n

AatmaTrisha that will be remem-bered for a long time. “The creative team is doing a brilliant job in trying to make our campus look as retro-ish as possible” says Niharika. The theme for this AT has been de-cided as Retro. Although we do find this unusual but Sathvik retorts,”if we go back 25 years it was the Retro era or the golden ear as it is fondly called.” But the best part of AatmaTrisha is the theme song, composed and sung by Ankur Kishore & Devavrth Rekhade of the 2nd semester. The promo tune has captivated the hearts of students and faculty alike and helped create an amazing buzz about the fest.Niharika concluded the session by saying that “AT is a way of life”, and rightly so everyone in the mural bound building agrees to this state-ment. We sincerely hope that the immense hard work put in by so many stu-dents results in a fantastic AT.

This year the literary events at Aatmatrisha will see a major over-haul with a lot of old events making

place for newer ones.We shall be having fewer events on a scale much larger than ever seen before. The flag-ship lit event, the AT MUN Security Council will kick off a whole week before the fest with some of the best dele-gates from the southern circuit i n c l u d i n g H y d e r a b a d , C h e n n a i a n d n a m m a Bangalore coming to partici-

pate and debate over the Syrian cri-sis and its possible solutions.

A second committee of the MUN, the ITU will take place on the fest days and deal with the issues of Cyber Security. We hope to draw in the largely tech oriented engineering crowd and inculcate them into the art of MUNing through the council. We also have a grand debate event, culminating in a We The People kind of panel discussion thrown open to a large audience, with the winners being divided by the audience them-selves.Other events incude the ever popular

JAM and AirCrash and the QQC's flagship quizzes which for the very first time includes a kannada quiz.To provide for its participants in style, the Lit team is operating its own lounge complete with refreshments, music and board games.Even though fewer in number, no effort has been spared this year to conduct all the events in style, and we hope sincerely it will pay off with a grand experience for participants.
