Illustrious Sir Brian N. Davenport, Potentate

Potentate’s Message

Join the Fun

For me, one of the hardest duties I have as your Potentate is to write my message for thePapyrus. I try to make it exciting and informative and not boring to read. Since the lastissue of the Papyrus (June 2008), things and events have been very exciting.

You all know, it is the Potentate who decides the date and place of the Spring Ceremonial.I could not have been prouder at the outcome of this year`s Ceremonial in Brampton. Thevenues, by far, were the most elegant and beautiful that has been seen in many a year byRameses. The weather could not have been better. It was no surprise that it did not rain inBrampton in 2008 as it did in the past. My Director General, Noble Doug Morris (I am surethat he wondered what he had gotten himself into, the costs, the timings and the frustrations)did an outstanding job. Noble Doug, his committees and the ladies committees are to becommended for their dedication and hard work. It certainly paid off.

The only downside of the Ceremonial weekend was the small number of on-lookers at theparade and the small number of new Candidates - 49. Nobles, we need more new Shriners tosurvive and stay healthy. Finding new members will always be a problem but you can do it,just try.

The 134th Annual Imperial Session was held in St. Louis, Missouri. It is now in the historybook of the Shrine of North America and, as our Imperial Sir George Mitchell would say, ‘itwas a Feztastic week’.

Rameses hospitality room was a very popular place to meet and greet. I thank all thosewho worked in the room to make it a success. At the Welcome Dinner we had about 180people and they said that the roast beef was so tender that you could cut it with a spoon! Myspecial guest that evening and who we were honoured by their presence, was the MostWorshipful Sir Allan J. Petrisor, Grand Master of Canada in the Province of Ontario and hisLady Mary. (Noble Allan is a member of Mocca Shrine Centre).

The Imperial business sessions were long and tiring and my `chair face` took quite abeating.

The parade was good and Rameses didn’t take a back seat to any Temple. Many heard mespeaking over the last six months or so, saying that I would like to see as many Canadianflags as possible in St. Louis. We had eighteen Canadian flags on parade. Thank you Nobles, itwas wonderful to see. July 1st, Canada Day, was the parade date, scores of people applaudedus and sang Happy Birthday Canada which caused many of us to have a lump in our throats.

I know that you should not single out any one group in case you offend anyone. However,a special mention goes to the Niagara Shrine Club and their Maid of the Mist - they broughtalong a special brand of Canadian beverage just for me. Another honourable mention goes tothe Founders Unit and their Streetcar. It seems that since time immemorial, this Unit hasalways been at all of the Imperial Sessions (we won`t mention that our Canadian Mountieornaments disappeared for a while ha! ha!)

A very warm, heartfelt thank you from Lady Johanna and myself to all those who came, worked and paraded in St. Louis. Rameses will always be remembered as a class act. THANKSGUYS.

As an aside, the Divan has always found a favourite place to eat at the Imperials. Such wasthe case this year. Ill. Sir Bob McGregor took on this job with enthusiasm and the staff savedhis regular seat for dining.

Now Shrine life is back to normal with circuses, golf, BBQs, visitations, corn roasts and fungatherings. Lady Johanna and I looked forward to being with you and sharing your memories.

BY BOB MCGREGOR, P.P. - Recorder

Recorder’s Message

The Spring Ceremonial in Brampton was, in my opinion, agreat weekend. It was well run, the food was excellent andwe owe a hearty vote of thanks to the Director General,

Noble Doug Morris and his committee for their skillful handlingof this important Shrine weekend.

A special mention also to Noble Bob Phillips, HousingChairman, a thankless job at the best of times, however it allworked out in the end and as we all know we can’t pleaseeveryone.

The Imperial Session in St. Louis was also a great week offun and fellowship. I served as Housing and Banquet Chairmanfor Rameses at this Imperial Session and I found it to be arewarding experience with very little hassle to contend with. Therooms were adequate and were ready for us on arrival; two ofour Nobles had toilet back-ups in their rooms which wereadjacent to my room, it was a little unpleasant for them butfortunately the problem was resolved quickly.

The banquet on Sunday night started exactly on time, whichis a must for me if we expect to receive hot food. The meal itselfwas excellent. It was roast tenderloin of beef and served hot. Ihad absolutely no complaints and in fact got manycompliments. More than one Noble said it was the best mealwe have had at an Imperial Session in years, modesty forbidsfurther comments. Ha-ha.

It’s a funny thing but it happens all too often when we, as aTemple, go out of town, somebody assumes the role of spoilerand this year was no exception. I often wonder if it’s a changein the water that makes some people obstinate and crankybecause people who are normally good and easy to get alongwill suddenly become difficult to deal with, fortunately the goodtimes in life outnumber the bad by hundreds to one and so wemove on a little wiser for the experience and more cautious forthe future.

Noble Mel Runnalls’ resignation took us all by surprisehowever we all wish both him and Lori well for the future andtrust they enjoy many more years in good health and that theyprosper.

I’m often asked if the gold wire fez is reserved only forspecial Shriners and the answer is yes, which means any one ofyou can buy and wear this type of fez because, in my book, youare all special and that’s why I always finish my report bythanking you all for just being Shriners so if you want a goldwire fez go ahead and get one, you deserve it.

While we are on the fez, just a friendly reminder that you areallowed only two fasteners for the tassel and only one line ofprint on the bottom edge, other pins and badges are notallowed on the fez, however I do see these rules broken onmany occasions but I don’t allow myself to get bent out ofshape on it if you know what I mean.

The draw for the metal plate square and compass will takeplace in the fall and we will announce the winner at that time.If anyone else wants their name in for the draw, just give me a

call or state by fax or email. So far only a few Nobles haveexpressed an interest in it and I must repeat, it has nocommercial value whatsoever, only nostalgia.

Just a reminder that more and more Clubs are having theirinstallation done on the same evening as the election, this waywe reduce the amount of travel in often very bad weather. Theofficers are declared elect and they assume office the momentthe new Potentate is installed, in this case January 10th, 2009. Ifyou want this for your Club, a simple call to me will set it upand we would be happy to oblige.

Please note election and installation schedule in this issue ofPapyrus. If you wish to change either, you should get in touchwith me post haste so that we can accommodate your request.

The good news is that so far this year we are, as usual, staying under budget on our expenses in spite of the fact thatwe have spent in excess of $12,000 this year so far on ourHVAC system in order to keep it in good running order, 3100Keele Street is an old building with some fairly old equipment, however we make every effort to maintain it.

Membership continues to be the number one problem for theShrine and our total membership is now down to 375,000.Rameses is no exception to the rule for we are now hovering atjust below 4,400 members. Some 800 of our members owe oneyear and a fair percentage two years dues. Nobles, if you arepart of this group, please pay up now. We take cash, cheque,Visa, Master Card and in some cases post-dated cheques. Wewill do whatever we can to help you and a call to me can veryoften lighten your load and I would be most happy to help.Remember, it’s not a sin to be low in funds. Being unemployedis not an embarrassment. It happens to the best of us andwhat’s more, I understand and your comments to me areconfidential. It’s between you and me only and I’ll move heavenand earth to get you over the hump. Please Nobles, I’m waitingfor your call.

By the time you read this, some of the items will be stale butat least you will know my feelings on some of the items I dealwith on a daily basis. Most of what happens is fun and it’s a joyto be involved. Some things are not so funny but I deal withthem anyway and as always I speak my mind and you don’thave to guess at where I’m coming from.

The fall season is upon us and as we start back in our Shrinework let us remember that we are all small cogs in a big wheeland the whole mechanism will run much smoother if we all turnin unison. Have fun meetings, crack a good joke and if you’vegot a good one send it to me. I need some new stuff. Make yourmeeting interesting. Serve up some good food, twice a yearinvite every Mason you know to a fun night. Tell them the funthings we do in the Shrine, and then give them some goodtucker. It will work, just give it time, don’t jam it down theirthroats on the first night.

Quote: Just for today, I will exercise my soul in three ways. Iwill do a good deed for somebody without letting them know itand if they find out that I did it, it won’t count. I will do at leasttwo things that I know I should do but have been putting off. Iwill not show anyone that my feelings are hurt; they may behurt; but today no one will even suspect it.

Take care and thank you all for just being Shriners.

Ray’s Thoughts

What a great Spring Ceremonial in Brampton. A tip of theFez and a hearty THANK YOU to all the Nobles andLadies who made this event a success. A short time

later Nobles and Ladies made their way to St. Louis for the134th Imperial Council Sessions.

Once again Rameses Temple set the standard for Temples onparade. At every turn your Temple received high praise, not onlyfrom Imperial Officers but from the Nobility assembled. Ahearty THANK YOU to all, Nobles and Ladies who attended thesessions.

One very important message came from Imperial Sir RalphSemb -Chairman of the Board, Shriners Hospitals for Children, within the next two to three years construction will start on thenew Canadian Unit (Shrine Hospital) in Montreal- GREAT NEWS.

Nobles, I hope everyone had a restful summer so we canget back to work helping our Special Children. We needall Nobles to make our Shrine Center function.

The circuses are our largest fundraiser and it wasdisappointing that the Clubs and Units did not have the supportthey needed for fire watch etc.

Thank you to the Nobles that did turn out and a specialthank you to young Andrew McCulloch and our lady BBQ cook.

Next year Nobles, please check your Club and Unit

schedules. It is very rewarding to stand there and have ourcustomers come and thank you for the help they or their friendshave received from our hospitals, sometimes we are evenhanded donations to help us along. This is our moment to makea public impression and a chance to answer their questions.

We need to start looking for more candidates for the fall.Age and ill health are catching up on us and we could do with afew younger members. This is a good organization to be proudof and therefore we should at least replace ourselves once eachceremonial.

I am looking forward to meeting everyone over the fallseason during the election of Clubs and Units.

To our ill and shut ins, your are always in our thoughts.

First, I would like to congratulate all our new Nobles whocrossed the Burning Sands in Brampton. I hope that theSpring Ceremonial 2008 was an exciting time and was

enjoyed by you and your lady.I would encourage each of you to

become active in one of the Clubsor in one of the Temple Units. Thisis where you will find fun and

fellowship and each of youwill learn what the Shrineis all about. “Having Fun,so Kids Can.”

I would alsoencourage each of younot to be shy aboutbeing part of theactivities of yourTemple. There are lotsof social events I amsure that you and yourlady will enjoy.

Next, a word ortwo about the 2008Imperial Session. As

this was my first Imperial Session as a Voting Member of theDivan I attended all the business sessions, election andinstallation of the Officers and exercised my right to vote onyour behalf. I found it was a very busy time but it was also avery enjoyable time and I look forward to attending next year’sImperial Session in Texas.

I would also like to personally congratulate all our memberswho were elected to Grand Lodge Office during the 153rdCommunication of Grand Lodge held in Toronto. My sincere bestwishes to you for a successful term of office.

Just before travelling to the Imperial Sessions, I learned ofthe very sudden and unexpected resignation of our AssistantRabban, Noble Mel Runnalls. I would personally like to thankNoble Mel for all he has done for Rameses Shriners and all thehelp he has given me during the time we have known eachother. I wish him and Lori the very best in the future with mywish for health and happiness for years to come.

Best wishes for safe and happy travels, and remember,Shriners do it Best.

For all his hard work and time spent while on the Divan, Iwould like to say thanks a million to Mel Runnalls, andwish him and Lady Lori all the best for the future.

To the organizing committee and all the other Nobles andwives who helped out at the Spring Ceremonial in Brampton, thank you for a job well done.

Welcome and congratulations to all the new Nobles whobecame Shriners in Brampton. I would encourage all the newNobles to get involved by attending a Shrine Club meeting nearyou. It is worth repeating, you only get out of something whatyou put into it.

The Imperial Session in St. Louis is already becoming a

distant memory. To all the Nobles who attended, I would like tothank you for attending and hope that you had a great time.

A special thank you to all the Clubs and Units whoparticipated in the parade. It is an honour to be in the paradewith Rameses Shriners.

The circus dates for Rameses are just about over. Almostwithout exception, the number of people who have beenattending has been fantastic. Most of the people leaving thecircus have been very complimentary. There are a great manyNobles who have spent many hours and days working at thecircus. A very big thank you goes out to Nobles who have donethe fire watch at the performances and a special thank you tothe Nobles who have attended and worked at everyperformance, and to the Rameses clown unit for taking part inthe circus. A job well done by many.

I hope everyone has a great summer.

RAMOCA SHRINE CLUB

Acasual request to a teacher returned a great opportunity to the RamocaShrine Club Oriental Band. After the resurrection of the Band last year, after a decade long hiatus, the members decided that they would like

new outfits. An inquiry was made to the Fashion Design teacher at West Hill Secondary

School in Owen Sound requesting their assistance in designing and making newoutfits. The band members provided the material and one of the original outfitsand the students completed the project.

This partnership was beneficial to both groups and the students learned thatclothing design can take many different forms.

The Oriental Band looks forward to entering into other projects with theschool if an opportunity presents itself in the future. The new outfits were wornwith pride by the Ramoca Shrine Oriental band at the Brampton SpringCeremonial.

Another successful Shriners Circus was presented at the BayshoreCommunity Centre in June. The Nobles of Ramoca Shrine Club assisted byNobles from the Bruce Shrine Club of Mocha Temple sold programs andcollected tickets. Assistant Rabban Noble Mel Runnalls and Ramoca Shrine Club1st Vice President Paul Balogh spoke to the audience at each show.

Five of our Special ladies, Billie Grainger, Margaret Ramsay, DianneWorkman, Rose Ewles and Jessie George accompanied by Ambassador NobleRob White and President Noble Dan Ward attended the Special ladies Luncheonat the temple on May 25. Our June Steak Barbeque was again held at the homeof Noble Creighton Taylor. Nobles from Manito Shrine Club and Bruce ShrineClub enjoyed our hospitality.

The Ramoca Shrine Club Wheelers have been extremely busy organizingdifferent venues to sell tickets for their 2008 fundraising venture. The winningnumbers were announced at the Ramoca Shrine Club Pig Roast in August.

Irealize that this is not the beginning ofa new year but it always seems thatwhen September arrives Rameses

Shriners all come back to life with a newbeginning. The Clubs and Units allresume meeting again and everythinggets back into top gear. So it is withRameses Drum Corps. Beginning withthe first Tuesday in September we willrestart our meetings and practicing.

During the summer the Drum Corpsattended the Spring Ceremonial inBrampton with a full compliment ofenthusiastic marching members despitethe small crowds and heat. In St. Louis, for the Imperial Session, the Drum Corpwas well represented with 14 membersalong with their Ladies. From crowdreaction it was evident that we wereappreciated for our stirring music andupbeat performance. After the Paradethe Drum Corps marched into theHospitality Room at the Millennium Hotelfor a short performance followed by theMocha Temple Pipe Band who also gavea stirring rendition of Scottish music.Thank you so much Nobles.

Upon returning from St. Louis theCorps members have been busysupporting the Shrine Circus. It wasduring one of these performances that I

met a new Shriner who expressed adesire to join a Unit. Needless to sayI think the Drum Corps would be a

perfect fit for him. In fact itwould be a perfect fit forany of you new Shriners

who are looking for away to become more

involved in Shrineactivities.

Unfortunately,some of our members

have been under theweather and we wish

them a speedy recoveryand return to our ranks.

To all Nobles, enjoy thebalance of the summer.

Mark your calendarsnow for thesespecial Court events

By Noble Michael A. ParkesPapyrus Editor

During a walk through of theImperial Flea Market in St.Louis, I chanced upon a

booth run by the Victory JunctionGang, a Hole in the Wall Camp.

I must admit I had never heardof them before but it did catch myinterest as while talking withCarolyn A. Mullins, RN, MS, Directorof Medical Communications I wasinformed that they work closely onmany occasions with ShrinersHospitals. Their website iswww.victoryjunction.org orhttp://www.holeinthewallcamps.orgwhich I found to be veryinformative.

The following is taken from thatwebsite.

In the fall of 1988, actorPaul Newman’s dream ofopening a camp for childrenwith serious medicalconditions became a reality.By the following summer, children whose lives hadbeen interrupted by illnesswere able to put theirworries aside and enjoy acarefree camp experience.Soon thereafter, Hole in theWall Camps expanded into agrowing worldwidemovement enabling childrento recapture their childhoodthrough the simple, butprofound understandingthat laughter is the bestmedicine.

Today, children across theglobe who spend much oftheir time in hospitals anddoctors’ offices areattending Hole in the WallCamps free of charge. Formore than 20 years, thefamily of Hole in the WallCamps has given over119,000 children the chanceto be a kid again.

KAWARTHA SHRINE CLUB

Carrying on the tradition of the Shrine to support local youth soccer, the KawarthaFiremen’s Unit has two teams in the local league. This brings the total for theKawartha Shrine Club to 4 teams.

Lloyd Hill, in his year as President, started this at the direction of the thenPotentate, Boyd E. Dixon.

This has been a very good way to promote the involvement of the Shrine Club inour local community.

The Shriners attend soccer games and, by wearing their fez, make people aware ofwho we are and what we do in the local area. This provides an excellent time to talkto the parents and promote the Shrine Hospitals and the Shrine Club for newmembers.

Our goals set for new membership in the 2008 drive havenot met the expected requirements, so we will return to theprevious plan: Each Shriner get a new member this year! As

this is the same plan that has failed in the past and reduced ourmembership from 1,000,000 to less than 200,000, I’m being veryoptimistic with that number.

Why do we continue to make excuses as to why we can’t getnew members? Reality is, we don’t have enough “ProductKnowledge or Skill” to obtain the request for an application.

As we are approaching the fall hunting season, what if it wasannounced that this year we will be having “duck dinners” forThanksgiving? Oh yes, you have to shoot your own ducks! I cantell you right now, there would be a lot of vegetarians for thedinner.

Why? It should be easy to shoot a duck, after all you are usinga shotgun and the shot spread all over the intended target area, how could you possibly miss? Also you have a second shot as youpull the trigger again, still no ducks down? What went wrong? Aswith Shrine membership hunts. lack of skill in several areas ofcrucial importance in getting that duck, or member.

In the above scenario, even if you did hit the duck it would godown over a pond so without a dog or a canoe you probablywon’t get it for dinner. So here we go:1. I’m going to need a boat or canoe and knowledge as how to use it.2. Where will I find a spot to hunt? Pond, lake or water area where ducks live.3. I’ll need some duck decoys to put out and build a duck blind to sit in.4. When I see the ducks flying in, I’ll need a duck call to attract them to my decoys.5. As they approach, resist the temptation to shoot until they are well within range.6. Don’t shoot directly at the ducks, lead them about 10 feet and keep the gun swinging as you shoot.7. Now aren’t you glad you have that retriever dog, and he will be thrilled to get the duck.8. Oh, I forgot, you have to get up at 4:00am to get out there, build a duck blind and get set up

How does this relate to Shrine Membership?First off the mark, you will need some knowledge of your product, what the Hospitals achieve and the cost of maintaining these:

(Duck Hunters need a canoe and know how to use it)Where to hunt for that member? As a Shriner, if you are not “active” in your Craft Lodge your success rate is going to be

questionable, the Lodge is your pond. Like the duck hunter our ponds are extremely limited, Master Masons only! And a dwindling pond it is with many of the ducks apparently not so well fed!The Shrine provides lots of great decoys in the form of colourful literature and pocket application forms for the final shots. As the

duck hunter, use a call to duty to this Master Mason, the “would you give if it was within your power?”As you sense they are getting close enough invite them to see our CDs and be prepared to show them, preferably with their wife

as they appreciate our efforts as well. Also with her presence you have maternal instinct on your side, you may need it to breakloose the $300 plus to join. Promise her continuing happiness, lots of fun times, hey, you’re married you must remember how thisworks!

OK he’s in range! Now Shoot! If he only looks wounded shoot again you have two shots. I’ll bet you just got a member! Knowledge is the key to success in any sale and here are some interesting facts for your hunting ammunition.18 Hospitals operating for Orthopaedic Care from Canada to Mexico.3 More Specializing in Burn care.1 in California specializing in Orthopaedic and Burn Care. The Research in both Orthopaedic and Burn Care is world renown with the first burn unit being established at Boston. The killer shot! These Shrine Hospitals cost $1,600,000 DAILY to operate and this is raised entirely by our Shrine Organization.Brother we need your help!

CREDIT VALLEY SHRINE CLUB

At the appointed time, Shriners from the Credit ValleyShrine Club, Leaside Shrine Club as well as the GuelphShrine Club boarded the bus and began the 10-hour drive

to Chicago, Illinois where a visit to the Shriners Hospital forChildren had been arranged. This was the fourth consecutiveyear that the Credit Valley Shrine Club had arranged a visit toone of the hospitals. The others that had taken place included;Erie PA, the Canadian Unit in Montreal and the Hospital inSpringfield MA,

The trip there was uneventful and the usual stops forrefreshments were made and we actually cleared the border forentry into the United States in about 1 hour. Upon arrival at theComfort Inn Suites and being assigned our rooms we were leftto our own devices for supper. Some members of the partyavailed themselves of the Karaoke event being staged in thehotel pub.

We all gathered at the appointed hour, boarded the bus andmade out way to the Hospital where we were greeted byIllustrious Sir Kenny J. Frank, Potentate of Medinah Shrinelocated in Addison, Illinois just outside Chicago, he welcomed uswarmly and invited us to come to the Shrine Centre uponcompleting our visit. Just as we entered the hospital one of thespecial guests, a young boy, scooted past us in his own customdesigned motor scooter that was less than 2 feet high followedby what appeared to be an anxious parent.

We assembled in the auditorium where the administratorand chief of staff explained the workings of the 60-bed unittogether with some of their plans for the future. The hospitalwas established over 80 years ago and it specializes in scoliosis, spinal cord injuries, craniofacial abnormalities including cleft lipand palate as well as other pediatric orthopedic problems.

The group was then split into three smaller groups andtoured the facilities accompanied by a Hospital Usher from theMedinah Shrine. One of these Ushers explained the young boyfrom Greece was severely crippled and his family had been toldby medical authorities in Greece that there was nothing to be

done for him and that the boy would never walk on his own.A relative in Chicago who was a Mason contacted the

Hospital and managed to have his medical history forwarded tothe Chicago Hospital. Doctors there examined the material sentto them and decided that the boy should be flown to the UnitedStates for treatment. He was brought into the unit on a hospitalgurney and after 16 months of treatment including extensivephysiotherapy was able to walk out of the Hospital under hisown power and with no assistance. All this was accomplishedwithout any surgeries being done.

The group then partook of a nice luncheon that had beenarranged by the hospital and we re-boarded the bus and wentto the Medinah Shrine Centre. We all toured the Shrine Centreand were suitably impressed as it was built at a cost of$14,000,000 taken from the sale of a downtown business blockthat was home to the Shriners in Chicago for over 100 years.

All were suitably impressed that the Shrine Centre was infact mortgage free, as the cost of the new building was lessthan what had been received from the sale of the old quarters.

Some of the group then joined a race day celebration thatwas under way in the auditorium as this was Kentucky Derbyday while those who wished to do so went shopping.

The activities having ended we boarded the bus to return tothe hotel to freshen up and then went on to ChantlersRestaurant where a buffet dinner had been arranged. Wearrived somewhat late as our navigator got confused as to theexact address.

Supper we retreated to the Hotel for socializing etc.Sunday saw us board the bus for the return trip and again it

was uneventful except for the fact that we cleared CanadianImmigration and Customs in less than 5 minutes.

Many thanks go to Noble Don Thomson and Lady Maureenfor their tireless devotion and effort in arranging anothersuccessful trip and all are looking forward to next year. All whowent, and toured the Hospital were impressed, reinvigoratedand had renewed enthusiasm with respect to helping ourSpecial Children.

and member of the Haweater Unit of the Sudbury Shrine Club

On June 1, 2008 members of the Sudbury Shrine Club and the Haweater Unit of the Sudbury Shrine Club attended DecorationDay on Manitoulin Island. The Haweater Unit which is composed of Shriners from Manitoulin Island had attended thisservice and Remembrance Day services for a number of years, parading together with and marching in support of the

remaining veterans and placing wreaths on behalf of Shriners everywhere. The history of Decoration Day goes back to April 25, 1866 when, in Columbus, Mississippi, a group of women visited a cemetery

to decorate the graves of Confederate soldiers who had fallen in battle at Shiloh. Nearby were the graves of Union soldiers, neglected because they were the enemy. Disturbed at the sight of the bare graves, the women placed some of their flowers onthose graves, as well.

In the US, in 1868 the first official Decoration Day or Memorial Day as it soon would be called was held. At that ceremony thesewords were spoken: “This Memorial Day, on which we decorate their graves with the tokens of love and affection, brings back toour minds in all their vividness the fearful conflicts of that terrible war in which they fell as victims.”

On Manitoulin Island, Decoration Day received its start in 1921. Veterans and citizens traveled across the island starting inWikwemikong in the east and Meldrum Bay in the west, ending at Monument Corners in Spring Bay where a combined service washeld. Along the way, they placed flowers and tokens of remembrance on the graves of departed soldiers.

Today on Manitoulin, instead of laying flowers or flags on individual graves, we lay wreaths in front of the cenotaph torecognize and pay our respects in memory of those who served in the Canadian Forces both in time of war and in peace.

With the conclusion of the service at the main cenotaph, the parade marched across to Memorial Gardens where a wreath waslaid in front of the Women’s Memorials. The attached picture was taken in front of these Memorials.

Each year as the ranks of our veterans decrease, the contingent in front of the reviewing stand gets less and less. With theNobles in Shrine dress jackets and Fez, it added so much. There were numerous compliments from veterans and the public on theirpresence and how much the Shriners support of the ceremony meant to them.

Spring and summer is the time for Shrine parades

The Niagara Shrine Club Degree Team was hard at work before retiring for the summer having installed two Masters,Imperial Sir George Mitchell, Perfection Lodge and Noble Carl Smith, Mountain Lodge. The Maid had a busy springschedule sailing to Mocha’s Ceremonial Parade; unfortunately it was rained out and to the Rose Parade in Welland,

for their 150th anniversary celebrations. She also sailed up to Brampton for our Spring Ceremonial. After docking at the hotel to pick up the crew we arrived at

the staging area to find it almost filled with a vast assortment of floats and Units, what a turn out! Good thing a watervender was around as the temperature climbed steadily until the parade ended, glad I was navigating not marching.

The annual golf tournament welcomed our fun loving Potentate and the Oriental Guide to a sunny and hot day, justunder a $1,000 was raised and donated to the Montreal Hospital. A better turn out next year from the Nobility willincrease this donation.

June, our annual steak fry meeting had the usual large turn out; don’t know if it’s the cheap price for dinner or as it’sthe last meeting before summer recess. Who cares it nice to see the Club filled to the rafters

Five adventurous Nobles with their wives sailed off to St Louis on the Maid and in the van. They spent one overnightbefore arriving to a sunny view of the Arch and the high water level on the Mississippi, glad we missed all the rain theMidwest had earlier.

St. Louis put out the welcome mat with great accommodations, some fantastic restaurants, (we found a few unusualones) and what looked like a new Convention Centre and Busch Stadium ball park.

The parade was well organized and got off on time with great many Units and the streets were lined with cheeringspectators, lots with Canadian flags (I wonderwhy). Our immediate past President Ted made hisbows from the bow while steering his waythrough town.

The Maid reverted back to her old life as a buswhen she carried 27 grateful parade participantsback to the hotel. Included were a group fromMedinah Temple in Chicago.

Summer recess is at an end; hope you all had agood one; now back to work, get a Mason out tojoin the fun!

By Noble Cuzin’ Barry L. JonesHILLBILLY SHRINE CLUB

Greetings friendly and dear readersfrom all of us at the RamesesHillbilly Shrine Club and Hillbilly

Clan 46.First off, I would like to express my

sincerest thank you to those who havesent along compliments on the Hillbillycolumns which appear in each Papyrus.Your kindness makes my ‘work’ lessdifficult.

We at the Hillbilly Club/Clan 46 havebeen doing many parades this Spring andearly Summer. We, along with what musthave been a record turnout of ShrineUnits and Clubs, attended the SpringCeremonial in Brampton. The generalquestion, however, seemed to be: ‘wherewere all the parade spectators?’ If itwasn’t for the Shrine Units and Clubs, thestreets would have been empty.

As the parade went down main streetone store owner remarked, ‘what’s goingon?’ Apparently she, like almosteverybody else, had no idea about thespecial occasion. Sad, indeed and let’shope all our future endeavours will begiven the red-carpet treatment by thosein charge.

The Hillbilly Club/Clan 46 also tookpart in civic parades - East York duringthe morning of July 1st, then over toScarborough for the night parade. July 1stfell on a Tuesday - someone must havebeen following the Neo-Druid calendar!

Also paraded in such exotic places asHighland Creek’s Festival; Oshawa’s ArtsFestival; Alliston’s Potato Festival and theDundas Cactus Festival. With the largecrowds it seemed as though muchcommunity pre-advertising was done.

Folks were cheering us on andespecially showing their appreciation toShriners and for what we all do for ourShriners Hospitals for Children and ofcourse those very special little folks forwhom we care.

Shrine Clubs always receive a warmwelcome and for we Hillbillies, it is greatto parade to the sound of the crowdsclapping their hands and tapping theirtoes to the melodious sounds of theHillbilly Club bluegrass music.

By the way, our new Hillbilly Club floatis truly a marvel of engineering plus aBIG bonus - the roof doesn’t leak.Shriners and Hillbillies parading andhaving fun are what our fraternity is allabout.

Now, if that isn’t reason enough forYOU to get actively involved in a Club orUnit (and of course if your health, etc.permits) what it is you want as a Shrinerand from Shrinedom? That’s a questiononly you can answer, so if you are gettingtired of sitting around telling your friendsyou are a Shriner (at least in name only)and want to add a meaningful reason forbeing so, the Hillbilly Club/Clan 46 offersan open invitation to you Hillbilly Degree‘graduates’ and Shriners in general tocome along and participate in some or allof our parades. You don’t have to be‘fancy like us’ but just bring along yourfavourite Hillbilly hat, clothes, yourfavourite waving hand and of course yourdesire to have fun.

Parading with us doesn’t require youto walk or march - unless you wish to doso because you can always ride theparade route on our comfortable float(seating will remind you of your favouritechair at home).

In September the monthly meetings ofour Club will resume and if you wouldlike to sit in on a meeting and see whatwe are all about, please drop in to the‘Fez’ Room in the lower level at theRameses Shrine Temple, 3100 Keele Streeton the fourth Mondays beginning at 7:30PM.

We ask you bring along your Fez andalso kindly request you wash your feetand wear clean socks (shoes optional).Casual dress is the norm. Our pastpractice of asking guests to wear tuxedosis no longer followed - we discoveredmany of our members mistook them forwaiters and kept asking them to ‘go fetchsome cold lemonade for me’.

Information regarding our Club, parades, etc., can be had from one of themembers listed below, so don’t be shy.

No doubt reading this column has peakedyour interest, so why not check us out?Folks, if you wish not to parade with us,please at least consider attending someof the parades we and other ShrinerUnits and Clubs are in and just cheer uson and enjoy the opportunity of listeningto the soft, melodious sound of bluegrassmusic. When was the last time YOUtapped your toes?

NOTE: Another annual Gathering ofthe Clan and famous Chowdown isplanned for Saturday, September 27th,2008 in Kirkfield, Ontario. Although onceknown as the Hillbilly Degree andChowdown, we have really progressed -thus the new name. Gosh, it won’t belong before we are no longer known asHillbillies, but Hill-Williams!

Anyway folks, look for moreinformation (ie: promotions) or contactNoble Bob ‘Preacher Bob’ O’Brien at 705-438-3863 or one of those listed below, but make plans for you and your better-half to partake of the famous HillbillyDegree and at the same time enjoy agreat day of fresh air, country setting, finesocializing and tasty Hillbilly food.Become part of the North Americanrecognized Hillbilly Degree.

Bring your own lawn chairs please.Cuzin’ David Davidge is selling his housein Scarborough, so if interested, contacthim. By the way, he tells me it was onlytwo years ago he replaced all the tires.

To all Shriners and/or their familiespresently experiencing less than perfecthealth, our best wishes and prayers arewith you and we hope you will soon beback sitting on your front porch saying‘howdy’ to your friends and neighbours. For now, dear readers, I will say ‘g’day’and may the Good Lord take a liking toyou.
