Here’s some of my work.

Hi, there!

I’m Yeray Pérez.

I’m a paper engineer: I design paper mechanisms.

Pop-up greeting cards

UWP Luxe Pure AlchemyPop-up greeting cards for the U.S. market, commissioned by UWP Luxe for their Pure Alchemy line. Cards in this line are all laser cut, allowing for tiny, delicate details.

These commissions have been illustrated and engineered by me.

This flock of flamingoes stands on thin legs and bamboo branches in an

intrincate design.

Cards and papercraft

The wing movement of this luna moth

mimics that of the living specimens.

Nerves in the wings are laser cut and eyelets

and antennae are stamped in golden foil.

Laser cut invitation

Google Campus MadridLaser cut and engraved pop-up card for the opening ceremony of Campus Madrid, the Google Spain center for startup incubation.

This invitation card had a really short run. Each copy was individually hand assembled.

Lines in the model and invitation texts were

etched on the paper with the same laser used in the die cut.

360 carousel card

Tin toy robotThis pop-up toy folds itself into a flat sealed card, and opens all the way around as a standing tin robot.

This piece works on the same principles of the carousel books, only using two 180º compositions instead of the simpler 90º ones.

A well designed papercraft is easier to assemble than

a quick and dirty one.

Luckily this model is one of the formers.

Stop motion set design

MakeratorMiniature set design for a stop motion short video. Makerator is the name of FabCafé BCN’s Maker Bus, a massive thing going from town to town carrying a full digital fabrication lab on its back.

Want to see it move? Go to tiny.cc/Makerator

Every piece on this set is cut directly from

the base paper and assembles without glue,

except for the yellow buildings and the bus.

Commercial pop-up card

CatamaranSouvenir card for attendees to a Naval Fair in Barcelona. This model is a scaled representation of one of the catamarans in exposition, picked from the exhibitor‘s catalog.

The whole model is cut and folded from the same piece of paper, no glue required.

The client commissioned two versions for this

card: 90 degrees and 180 degrees (mirroring and adapting the original).

Paper miniatures

Cities in a jarFreeform pieces for an art exhibition in Barcelona in 2016.

These laser cut cityscapes are made with two single strips of paper, spiraling from the center and outward. When tucked inside a clear jar they layer on themselves to form an intrincate composition.

Single copies of these artworks were reproduced and sold

inside bell jars to private clients.

Pop-up books

Butterflies field journal

MariposarioMy second fully-authored book (page design, pop-up and text) is entirely self-commissioned and looking for an interested publisher.

Mariposario is a pop-up field journal featuring several life-sized butterflies and moths.

The beautiful illustrations on this book are adapted from original 18th century engravings by John Abbot, a botanical and zoological illustrator who penned dozens of artworks.

Mariposario features information on each featured species, such as

habitat, diet or what it’s named after.

Pop-up books

Children’s books

Las Niñas Flamencas Flamenco girls

Published by Combel in Spain.

Las Niñas Flamencas is the first book by illustrator Susana Subirana. My paper engineering is done on her original 2D illustration work.

Pop-up books

The last spread of the book opens to shape a tablao, a traditional flamenco stage.

16

Pop-up books

This book’s main challenge was designing pop-ups that would not only fit in

the page, but keep the eye holes clear when closed.

3D masks

Un libro de narices A nosy book

A Nosy Book is a toy book for ages 3 to 10. The whole piece is pierced through, turning every double page into a pop-up mask.

The text, in Spanish, is a short poem about noses all over.

Pop-up books

The engineering in this book tries to keep the feeling of the original illustrations while leveraging the impact of pop-ups.

Children’s books

Te quiero (casi siempre) I love you (most of the time)

Published by Planeta in Spain and associated publishers abroad.

Pop-up book adaptation of best-selling author Anna Llenas. Pop-up scenes developed from the original illustrations in the book, with direct collaboration from the author.

Te quiero (casi siempre) tells the story of a cute bug couple and their struggle to accept and love each other’s differences.
