PANTHERS TRAVEL TO CINCINNATI FOR FIRST TIME SINCE 2006 After surviving a come-from-behind win over the Chicago Bears, the Carolina Panthers go on the road to face the AFC North lead- ing Cincinnati Bengals Sunday in a contest of division leaders. The Panthers’ hold on the NFC South was precarious as they trailed 21-7 in the second quarter last week, but a combination of Greg Olsen, Cam Newton, and Luke Kuechly plus several unlikely contributors enabled Carolina to secure a 31-24 victory. “It was a team victory that included some strong leadership and guys stepping up at key times to make contributions,” says Carolina head coach Ron Rivera, who claimed his first victory against his former team in three tries. It was a turn of events that could not have happened without: Tight end Greg Olsen, who had two touchdown receptions against his former team among his six catches for 72 yards. Olsen’s second touchdown catch came with 2:18 remaining to put the Panthers in front 31-24 and left him as the team’s leader in catches with 27 and touchdowns with four. Quarterback Cam Newton, who overcame a slow start to pass for 255 yards and two touchdowns while directing the Panthers offense. Newton’s two touchdown passes gave him five for the season against one interception for a 94.6 quarterback rating. Linebacker Luke Kuechly, who led the Panthers in tackles with 15 while covering the field to help limit the Chicago offense to a field goal in the second half. In just his third season, the Cincinnati native and reigning AP Defensive Player of the Year is already approaching 450 tackles. Running backs Darrin Reaves and Chris Ogbonnaya, who were not on the Panthers roster when the season started, combined for 59 yards and a touchdown with DeAngelo Williams, Jonathan Stewart, and Mike Tolbert all sidelined with injuries. Reaves began camp as a free agent rookie from UAB while Ogbonnaya was signed last Monday before the game. However, the most pleasing aspect was that all three units – offense, defense, and special teams – contributed to the win. After a rough start, the Panthers limited the Bears to 110 yards and three points in the second half, thanks in large part to a defensive line that stiffened against the run and recorded three sacks after intermission and four for the game. Leading the charge was Charles Johnson, who had a sack and fumble recovery, to move within a half-sack of Mike Rucker for second place on the team’s all-time list. He was joined by Kawann Short, whose sack and forced fumble ended the game, Wes Horton with a sack, and Dwan Edwards and Mario Addison, who split a sack. However, reaching Dalton will prove a difficult task against an offensive line that has allowed only sack this season. That could spell plenty of activity for Kuechly and fellow linebacker Thomas Davis as well as a secondary that picked off two passes last week as Thomas DeCoud and Roman Harper had one each. Offensively, the Panthers will try to mix and match in the backfield while Newton directs a passing game that is ranked 12th in the League. In addition to Olsen, rookie Kelvin Benjamin has provides an appealing target with 24 catches for a team high 367 yards while veterans Jerricho Cotchery and Jason Avant have combined for another 28 receptions. That production has come behind a line that is still adjusting to an offseason of change, but showed signs of progress against the Bears. The biggest play last week did not come from offense or defense, but special teams when rookie Philly Brown drew a punt receiving interference penalty and then alertly picked up the ball and returned it 79 yards for a touchdown for Carolina’s first score. Later, kicker Graham Gano added a clutch 44-yard field goal to tie the score in the fourth quarter at 24 before Carolina’s late game-winning score. “I was very proud of how we fought and it is going to take a similar effort against a very good Cincinnati team that will be anxious to bounce back following a most difficult assignment last week,” says Rivera. Ron RIVERA

NFL: 18th seasonPanthers: 4th seasonRegular Season: 28-25 (.528)Postseason: 0-1 (.000)

Ron Rivera became the fourth coach in Carolina Panthers history on January 11, 2011. In 2013, his third year with the Panthers, Rivera led Carolina to 12 wins, the NFC South division title and the first playoff appearance since 2008. After starting the season with a 1-3 record, the Panthers won 11 of their final 12 regular season games – including a franchise record eight-game winning streak – to secure the No. 2 seed in the NFC and a first-round bye. In recognition of that success, Rivera was named NFL Coach of the Year.

Carolina’s record has improved every season since Rivera became head coach in 2011. Dating back to Week 12 of the 2012 season, the Panthers have won 17 of their last 22 regular season games.

Before joining the Panthers, Rivera worked with the San Diego Chargers from 2007-2010, coaching inside linebackers before taking over as defensive coordinator midway through the 2008 season. In 2010, San Diego led the NFL with an average of 271.6 total yards allowed per game and gave up a League-low 177.8 passing yards per game.

From 2004-06, Rivera oversaw the Chicago Bears defense, guiding the unit to two top-five finishes in the league. In 2006, the Bears defense led the NFL with 44 takeaways and finished fifth in total defense and third in scoring defense, helping propel Chicago to an appearance in Super Bowl XLI. In 2005, Rivera’s defensive unit ranked second in the NFL in total defense and first in scoring defense. The Bears went 43 consecutive quarters without allowing more than seven points – the longest streak in the NFL since 1969.

Prior to serving as defensive coordinator with the Bears, Rivera was linebackers coach for the Eagles (1999-2003) and defensive quality control coach for the Bears (1997-98).

A second-round draft choice in 1984 by Chicago, Rivera played nine seasons with the Bears. Primarily an outside linebacker, he was a member of the Super Bowl XX championship team in 1985.

An All-American at the University of California, Rivera finished his career as the school’s all-time leader in sacks with 22 and tackles with 336.

Born January 7, 1962 in Fort Ord, Calif. He and his wife, Stepha-nie, have two children – Christopher and Courtney.

Marvin LEWIS

NFL: 23rd seasonBengals: 12th seasonRegular Season: 96-86 (.520)Postseason: 0-5 (.000)

Marvin Lewis in 2014 extends his Bengals-record head coaching tenure to 12 seasons. He has led the team to the postseason in four of the last five years, including three straight. The Bengals are one of only five NFL teams to be in the playoffs every year since 2011.

In total, Lewis has coached five Bengals playoff teams, a franchise record. Lewis opened 2014 with 90 career victo-ries, 26 more than any other Bengals’ coach. The Bengals went 11-5 in the 2013 regular season and won the AFC North Division championship. Lewis’ 2012 Bengals achieved a rare NFL feat, becoming only the ninth of 131 teams from 1990-2012 to rise from a 3-5 start to the playoffs.

Lewis was the consensus choice as NFL Coach of the Year in 2009, when the Bengals won the AFC North title. The Ben-gals were AFC North champions under Lewis also in 2005.

In 2002, Lewis was Washington Redskins defensive coor-dinator and assistant head coach. He spent six seasons (1996-2001) as defensive coordinator with the Baltimore Ravens, a tenure that included a Super Bowl victory in the 2000 season. In 2000, Lewis’ defense set the NFL record for fewest points allowed in a 16-game campaign (165), and the unit has been widely considered as one of the best NFL defenses of all time. Prior to Baltimore, Lewis spent four seasons (1992-95) as the Pittsburgh Steelers’ linebackers coach.

Lewis earned All-Big Sky Conference honors as a linebacker at Idaho State (1978-1980), and saw action at quarterback and free safety. Began his coaching career at Idaho State (1981-84), winning an NCAA Division I-AA championship in 1981. He was also the linebackers coach at Long Beach State (1985-86), New Mexico (1987-89), and Pittsburgh (1990-91).

The Panthers mustered 267 yards of total offense and seven points for the second consecutive game in a 20-7 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. The Panthers defense provided a spark early when cornerback Captain Munnerlyn intercepted quarterback Carson Palmer on the game’s open-ing drive. Three plays later, quarterback Jimmy Clausen fumbled the snap and it was recovered by Bengals safety Roy Williams for the first of the Panthers three turnovers. Later in the first quarter, Panthers safety Charles Godfrey intercepted another Palmer pass and returned it all the way to Cincinnati’s 21-yard line. Again, the Panthers were unable to capitalize on the turnover when just one play later, Clausen was picked off by Bengals cornerback Leon Hall. The Bengals dominated time of possession and field position to overcome numerous mistakes of their own. Running back Cedric Benson rushed for 81 yards on 27 attempts, and Palmer threw for 195 yards with two interceptions. The Bengals held the ball for 30:22 through the first three quarters, aided by an average drive start at their 38. Carolina was backed up to its 24 on average. On the Panthers scoring drive, Clausen led the team 75-yards midway through the third quarter including a 15-yard run by DeAngelo Williams.

WHAT TO LOOK FORWide receiver Brenton Bersin, a Charlotte, N.C. native, entered very select company this season after making the Panthers opening-day 53-man roster.

The receiver joined Panthers owner Jerry Richardson as the only players in Wofford College history to make an NFL regular season roster. Richardson played his final NFL contest in 1960, and Bersin ended a nearly 54-year drought for the school.

Bersin made his NFL debut in Week Two vs. Detroit (9/14/14), catching one pass for eight yards. He has four catches for 70 yards on the season.

As a junior in 2010, Bersin’s nine touch-down catches tied the Wofford single-season record set by Richardson in 1958.

Bersin, played four seasons at Wofford (2008-11), the 1,600-student school in Spartanburg, S.C., that has hosted the Panthers training camp for each of the

team's 20 seasons. In his collegiate career, Bersin played in 46 games with 33 starts and totaled 77 catches for 1,567 yards and 15 touchdowns.

Bersin earned a spot of the Panthers roster after a strong pre-season in which he was the Panthers second-leading receiver, totaling seven catches for 117 yards a touchdown.

Bersin spent last season on the Panthers practice squad and also attended training camp with the team as a rookie in 2012.

When Steve Wilks was hired as second-ary/pass defense coordinator prior to the 2012 season, it was a homecoming for the Charlotte native.

In the 1980s Wilks starred at quarterback for West Charlotte and played collegiately at Appalachian State before spending one season with the Charlotte Rage of the Arena Football League in 1993. He began his coaching career at Johnson C. Smith

University in 1995.

Following 11 years coaching on the college level, Wilks entered the NFL coaching ranks in 2006 when he joined Panthers head coach Ron Rivera in Chicago. With Rivera serving as defensive coordina-tor and Wilks leading the Bears secondary, Chicago won the NFC Championship and advanced to Super Bowl XLI. The two reunited in 2010 in San Diego, helping the Chargers lead the NFL in total defense and pass defense.

Wilks has been an important part of the Panthers coaching staff. Last season, Wilks directed a unit that helped the Panthers finish second in the NFL in total defense and sixth in passing defense. Defensive backs were responsible for 16 of the team’s 20 interceptions, including a team-record four returned for touchdowns. Carolina also limited opponents to an 81.4 passer rating, which ranked 10th in the NFL.

Wilks’ secondary received signifi cant con-tributions from rookies and veterans alike. Undrafted rookie cornerback Melvin White started the last 10 games and posted two interceptions with one touchdown, while safety Robert Lester, another undrafted rookie, tallied three inter-ceptions. Mike Mitchell, who started 14 games at free safety after a season-ending injury to Charles Godfrey, was one of two players in the NFL with at least four interceptions, three sacks and two forced fumbles, and cornerback Captain Munnerlyn returned his only two interceptions for touchdowns.

Ricky Proehl spent 17 seasons as an NFL player, including three with the Carolina Panthers from 2003-05. In 2014, Proehl enters his fourth season as a member of the coaching staff, serving as wide receivers coach for the second consecu-tive season.

In his career, Proehl played in 244 games with 110 starts for Phoenix/Arizona, St. Louis, Seattle, Chicago, Carolina and

Indianapolis. Proehl was a member of four Super Bowl teams, including championship teams with the Rams and Colts. He finished his career with 669 catches for 8,878 yards and 54 touchdowns.

Proehl caught a touchdown from 16 different players, second-most in NFL history behind Irving Fryar (19).

PLAYERS WHO THREW A TOUCHDOWN PASS TO RICKY PROEHL

In three seasons with the Panthers, Proehl tallied 86 catches for 1,327 yards and eight touchdowns and was a member of two playoff teams. He is responsible for one of the most well-known plays in franchise history when in the 2003 season opener vs. Jacksonville, his first game with Carolina, Proehl caught a 12-yard touchdown on fourth down with 16 seconds left to cap a come-from-behind win and propel the Panthers on their Super Bowl run.

The Panthers coaching staff includes two members – Mike Shula and Sam Mills III – whose fathers are prominent football figures.

Shula, the Panthers offensive coordinator, is the son of Don Shula, the NFL leader in career coaching victories with 347. Don Shula led the Miami Dolphins to two Super Bowl victories, including a perfect 17-0 season in 1972. “He’s an unbelievable sounding board,” Mike said of his father, now 84. “Whenever I’ve had to ask tough questions, I’ve always gone to him first because he’s not going to give me the answer that I want to hear – he’s going to

give me the answer that I need to hear.”

The Panthers assistant defensive line coach, Mills, is the son of former Panthers linebacker and linebackers coach Sam Mills, Jr., who lost an inspiring battle with cancer six years ago. A starting linebacker on the Panthers inaugural team in 1995, Sam Mills, Jr., propelled the Panthers to their first victory with an interception return for a touchdown against the New York Jets (10/15/95) and he is the only player in the team’s Hall of Honor. He was

a member of the team’s coaching staff from 1998-2004. “It’s an honor, especially around here with how he was able to touch people’s lives,” Mills III, said. “I hope that I can live up to it.”

Richard Rodgers is the Panthers special teams coordinator. More than thirty years ago, Rodgers was part of one of the most famous plays in college football history – “The Play”

The improbable five-lateral kickoff return for a touchdown allowed Rodgers’ California Golden Bears to defeat the John Elway-led Stanford Cardinal on the final play of the game between the two rivals

in 1982.

In addition to featuring five laterals, “The Play” also included an appearance by members of the Stanford band, who thinking the play had been blown dead, entered he field of play midway through the return. Cal radio play-by-play announcer Joe Starkey called the return “the most amazing, sensational, dramatic, heart-rending...exciting, thrilling finish in the history of college football.”

In his 25 years of coaching, “The Play” has served Rodgers well.

“Since then I’ve been able to call on The Play as a tool of learning for players that I coach – never give up, never quit, you never know when you’re going to make history,” said Rodgers. “I certainly didn’t know that Saturday morning The Play was going to happen. That’s why you keep playing.”

French-Canadian offensive tackle David Foucault (foo-KOH), the fifth overall selec-tion in the 2014 Canadian Football League Draft by the Montreal Alouettes, has made the Panthers 53-man roster.

The 6-foot-8-inch, 305-pound lineman joined the Panthers as a free agent after participating in the team's rookie mini-camp in May on a tryout basis.

Foucault is the first player from the University of Montreal to make an NFL

roster. He played four seasons for the Carabins, moving to the offensive line in 2011 after starting on the defensive line in 2010. Foucault played in the 2013 CIS (Canadian Interuniversity Sport) East-West Bowl after helping the team average 6.0 yards per rush. In 2012, he opened holes in for the conference's leading rusher.

Foucault is one of two rookies from Canadian colleges to make NFL active rosters, joining offensive guard Laurent Duvernay-Tardif of McGill University who was a sixth-round pick of the Kansas City Chiefs.

The return happened in odd fashion as Brown was interfered with before he fielded

the punt and he, along with the ball, fell to the ground. But Brown got up and found the loose ball. He then ran 79 yards down the sideline for a touchdown to give Carolina a 7-0 lead.

"I looked down, and the ball was right there," Brown said. "Jason Williams and a couple other guys made some crazy blocks to spring me."

The 79-yard return is the third-longest punt return in Panthers history.

Tight end Greg Olsen is again putting together a top season for the Panthers with 27 receptions, 326 receiving yards and four receiving touchdowns.

In 2013, Olsen led the Panthers in receiv-ing with 73 receptions, 816 yards and six touchdowns. Olsen is the only active NFL tight end with five or more touchdowns in every season since 2008.

2013 season marked the first time since 1997 that a wide receiver did not lead the

team in receptions or receiving yards. Tight end Wesley Walls led the Panthers in receptions (58) and receiving yards (746) that season.

Olsen’s 73 receptions in 2013 are a career-high and tight end record for the Panthers, surpassing his own 69 in 2012. The 816 yards are the third-most by a tight end in team history and the six touchdowns are tied for third-most by a tight end in team history.

Luke Kuechly

In 2013, linebacker Luke Kuechly became the first Panthers player to earn Associated Press NFL Defensive Player of the Year honors after leading the Panthers No. 2-ranked defense with 176 tackles and tying for the team lead with four interceptions.

The second-year linebacker won the award one season after being named AP NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2012.

Kuechly is just the second player to win Defensive Player of the Year and Defensive Rookie of the Year in his first two seasons. New York Giants linebacker Lawrence Taylor won both awards as a rookie in 1981 and repeated as Defensive Player of the Year in 1982 (and later in 1986).

Kuechly is one of eight players in NFL history to win Defensive Rookie of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year in a career.

Luke Kuechly has made a difference for the Panthers defense since arriving to the team as the ninth overall choice in the 2012 NFL Draft.

In the 37 games (2012-14) since Kuechly arrived in Carolina, he has helped the team rank fifth in the NFL in total defense (324.1 yards per game), seventh in rush-ing defense (102.7) and eighth in pass-ing defense (221.4). That is a marked

improvement from the defense’s standings during the 37 games prior to Kuechly’s arrival as the Panthers ranked 22nd in total defense (352.1), 22nd in rushing defense (125.0) and 16th in passing defense (227.1).

Kuechly played all 769 of the Panthers defensive snaps in the final 12 games of the 2012 season and saw action in 990 of the Panthers 1,014 defensive snaps (97.6) in 2013. This season Kuechly has played in 318 of the Panthers 325 defensive snaps (97.8).

In 33 career games in the middle, Kuechly has averaged 12.33 tackles per game (407), recorded four sacks, six interceptions, 12 passes defensed, a forced fumble and three fumble recoveries (based on coaches’ film review).

In 2012, Kuechly’s first game in the middle came vs. Seattle in Week Five (10/7/12). After ranking 24th in the NFL in total defense after four weeks, the Panthers improved to 10th by the end of the season with Kuechly in the middle. In five games with Carolina, cornerback Antoine Cason has tallied 34 tackles, two passes defensed, an interception, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. The three forced fumbles are tied for the NFL lead with Trent Cole (Phi.), Kendrick Lewis (Hou.) and D.J. Swearinger (Hou.).

Cason has had multiple interceptions in each of his first six seasons in the NFL and with one more interception he would join DeAngelo Hall as the only active players with multiple intercep-tions in each of their first seven seasons.

Cason saw some familiar faces when he signed with the Panthers in March, reuniting with Panthers head coach Ron Rivera and secondary coach Steve Wilks who coached the corner when he began his NFL career with the San Diego Chargers. Rivera served as the Chargers defensive coordinator from 2008-10 while Wilks was Cason’s position coach from 2009-11.

With a half-sack in Week Five vs. Chicago (10/5/14), defensive tackle Dwan Edwards pushed his season total to 3 sacks, tying his total from all of 2013.

Edwards has been a solid pass rusher for the Panthers since joining the team in 2012. In 30 games with Carolina, Edwards has 12 sacks after totaling 5.5 in his previous 83 career games.

In his first season with Carolina in 2012, Edwards posted a career-high 6.0 sacks, the third-most among defensive tackles that season.

Defensive end Mario Addison posted a career-high 2.5 sacks in Week Two vs. Detroit (9/14/14). The 2.5 sacks bettered his previ-ous career high of 1 sack, accomplished twice, most recently at Miami (11/24/14), and equaled his 2013 season total.

Addison pushed his season total to 4.0 sacks with a half-sack in Week Five vs. Chicago (10/5/14), surpassing the sack total from the first three seasons of his career combined.

A fourth-year player from Troy, Addison joined the Panthers in 2012 has evolved into a dependable pass rusher and special teams contributor, playing in 16 games with two starts last year. He posted 14 tackles, 2.5 sacks, 15 quarterback pressures, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery in 2013 and tied for the team lead with 10 special teams tackles.

ADDISON HAS CAREER DAY

Mario Addison posted a career-high 2.5 sacks in Week Two vs. Detroit (9/14/14).

In Week Five vs. Chicago (10/5/14), safe-ties Thomas DeCoud and Roman Harper each intercepted Bears quarterback Jay Cutler.

DeCoud's interception was his first of the season and his first since a game vs. the New York Giants (12/16/12), the year that he was named to the Pro Bowl after a six-interception

season.

For Harper, his interception against the Bears was his second of the season. He has posted multiple interceptions in a season just two other times (2007 - 3; 2012 - 2) in his nine-year NFL career.
