HELP SAVE THE LIFE OF 20 YEAR OLD MARTIN SOLOMONMartin was initially diagnosed with Stage 3B Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in December 2007. He was successfully treated with Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy and has had four years cancer free during which time he completed his A levels and went on to enrol at Newcastle university where he was about to enter his 3rd year of his Biomedical Science degree.

Unfortunately in August 2012, Martin and his family received the terrible news that Martin had relapsed and was diagnosed with Stage 4 Relapse Hodgkin’s lymphoma. He urgently needs a matching bone marrow donor to save his life. Due to Martin’s mixed heritage we are registering potential bone marrow donors from the black, mixed race and white British communities. To join the register you will simply complete a short application form and (dependent on age either) give a small saliva sample or a (future) blood sample will be taken.

Every 90 minutes, three people in the UK find out they have a blood cancer like leukaemia. For many, like 20-year-old Manchester lad Martin Solomon, a bone marrow transplant is their only chance – if a matching donor can be found. If you’re aged 16 to 49, you could give Martin a chance to beat the blood cancer – by joining the UK bone marrow registry. So be part of a life-changing solution. Become a potential lifesaver at www.aclt.org.

Search #Match4Martin on Twitter to find out more about Martin’s campaign.

UK based companies; Panache Occasions, CaribDirect and Studio One UK have pooled together their

expertise and resources to create the Company - Miss Caribbean UK to present the very first Caribbean beauty contest of its kind in the UK.

The Miss Caribbean UK “Beauty with a Purpose” Pageant 2013 consists of 6 heats commencing on 8th June to 12th October 2013 at the plush and exclusive CLUB ZANZIBAR, 291 Kirkdale Road, Sydenham London SE26 4QD and will lead to a GRAND FINAL on Saturday 30th November 2013 at the prestigious CIRCUS TAVERN, Meads Corner, A1306 Purfleet, Essex RM19 1TS Most beauty pageants are focused on choosing someone to hold up to scrutiny as the example of beauty for that county, region etc.

We want to use “BEAUTY”, with a purpose!

We want to use this pageant to INSPIRE, to INFORM, to UNITE and to raise awareness of issues relating to Caribbean peoples in the Caribbean and the diaspora.

We want to use the pageant to inspire by example those who feel disadvantaged and to empower them by showing what you can do with the right attitude.

We want to use the pageant to inform the audience about issues that are affecting men and women in the Caribbean and the diaspora. Such as the issues of female abuse in all its forms. For example we will be working with “Wilde International network” bringing light to their “PROTECT THE GIRL CHILD” campaign. www.wildeinternationalnetwork.org.uk

We want to use the pageant as a vehicle for the peoples of the Caribbean and the diaspora

to unite around a common purpose, which will be to choose their UK Caribbean Queen to represent them to the World.

Our main objective, however, is to help raise awareness of issues that are affecting the aforementioned community and to try and effect positive change to those issues. To achieve our objective we are forming collaborations with media agencies across the Caribbean and in the UK.

We have also invited all the High Commissioners and consular heads of these countries and informed them of the objectives of this pageant. They have all given a positive indication of their attendance.

We believe The Miss Caribbean UK “Beauty with a Purpose” Pageant 2013 has the potential to be extremely successful. Beauty contests are popular in many parts of the world. The biggest, the Miss World competition, has been running annually since 1951, and although it is less popular in the UK now than it was in 1968, when it attracted 27.5 million TV viewers, it attracts an enormous worldwide audience – up to 3 billion viewers in 120 countries. There are beauty contests for various categories of age, sex and sexuality. However, adult women’s beauty contests are overwhelmingly the most popular and high-profile version.

We recognised that although some of the Caribbean countries currently organise their own individual countries’ pageant, e.g. Miss Jamaica UK, Miss Trinidad and Tobago UK and Miss Guyana UK, there was no “finale” to showcase the ultimate Caribbean UK beauty that they could attend, such as the “Miss World” contest.

To this end we are delighted to present The Miss Caribbean UK “Beauty with a Purpose” Pageant 2013

Miss Caribbean UK is supporting the charity, CANCER BLACK CARE (CBC), and will be donating 5% of net profits to this charity. The contestants all have charities that they support and that they will be promoting

About CANCER BLACK CARE (CBC) www.cancerblackcare.org.uk

Cancer Black Care ( CBC) (registered charity no. 1086465) has been in existence since 1995. Dr Frank Chinegwundoh MBBS MS MML(med law) FRCSEng FRCSEd FRCS(Urol) FEBU has been the Chairman of the Board of Trustees (since 1998).

Cancer Black Care’s ( CBC) vision is to be the primary cancer support organisation for the Black Minority Ethnic (BME) sector in the UK. It aims to provide practical, physical and emotional support to people affected by cancer, as well as their carers, families and friends, especially, but not exclusively from the Black Minority Ethnic community (BME).

CBC achieves these aims by engaging the community, providing support services and influencing educational programmes relating to cancer prevention, treatment, and palliative care.

Below are some of the services offered

Core Services• to give information and advice on all

types of cancer• to provide one-to-one counselling • to raise funds on behalf of patients

and their families• to initiate and facilitate support group

meetings• to provide cancer information

through open health forums• to provide a befriending and home

visiting service • to engage the BME community by

outreach work

• raise awareness of cancer and promote healthy living

• Information on Palliative Care• Befriending Scheme • Training

CBC assists the National Cancer Plan’s objective of reducing inequality in cancer. We are on the Department of Health National Cancer Inequalities Initiative.

CBC Information and Support Centre is based at 79 Acton Lane, London NW10 and provides services for the Brent and Harrow communities. Wider support is telephone based.. The majority of referrals to CBC come from local NHS Trusts. We therefore are supporting NHS patients. . We were commissioned by the Department of Health in 2009 to convene a panel of Black and Ethnic Minority Cancer sufferers to advise them. In 2011 we jointly completed a project on increasing the uptake of breast screening in African Caribbean in South London; the report is on the NHS cancer screening website. In 2012 we collaborated with several agencies to deliver a men’s prostate community health project as a one year pilot at the instigation of the Department of Health. The externally commissioned report was published in October 2012.

The Chair represents Cancer Black Care on the Department of Health prostate cancer advisory group (PCAG). CBC welcomes volunteers and potential trustees.

Educational dilemma: How Valuable is a

Degree?

There has been countless discussions andopinionsvoicedovertheworthofeducationinthiscurrentUKeconomy. Manystudents

are leaving universities with impressive degreesand still end up unemployed. Last year, theunemploymentratefor16-24yearolds increasedto 21.1%, which meant that at least 11 millionyoung people remained unemployed. From 2004to2009,universitytuitionfeesrangedfrom£3,000to £3,290 per year. This has since increased to amaximum of £9,000 under the current coalitiongovernment. This increase coupled with the lackof jobs foryoungpeopleandgraduates, begsthequestions: is going to university worth it? Howvaluableisadegree?

Uncle George speaks to a very interesting lady, with an interesting talk show “THE NANA CHURCHER SHOW” and an amazing life as a

devoted mother and wife!

Born Mary Nana Agyeman Prempeh, a granddaughter to the Absolute Ruler of the Kingdom of Ashanti - Otumfuo Osei Tutu

Agyeman Prempeh II, her mantra: “You will win if you don’t quit” is a real testimony of her royal power and has aided in the success of her show. ‘The Nana Churcher Show’ gives a unique look and insight into the lives of extraordinary personalities within the Afro-Caribbean community. Interviewing the likes of Politicians to musicians, this weekly show has grown tremendously in numbers and is establishing Nana Churcher as a household name in talk shows. Alongside her show, she works as a Beauty Consultant/ Sales Director at Mary Kay Cosmetics.

Tell me about ‘The Nana Churcher Show’?‘The Nana Churcher Show’ is a chat show, it was my childhood dream that has come true! I have always wanted my own talk show. I adored the Oprah Winfrey Show, her work and persistence, further strengthened my desire to have my own show. I love getting to know people and getting an

insight into their life. From the discussions I have with people, I end up receiving valuable information which I share in hope that it can impact the lives of others. Nana Churcher is my name so the show was named after me. Kindly, VOX Africa TV (Sky 218) allows me to showcase myself every Sunday at 6:30 pm.

Your interviews are fabulous but pick a few out.Yes you are right I have had some fabulous interviews but I guess the most interesting one will have to be the interview with Jermaine Lawlor. As a former gang member, he turned his life around and is currently a motivational speaker and an Evangelist. He works with

young people within his community to try and motivate them to work hard and stay off the streets. His interview is available at:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zvBqYSGQvS0&playnext=1&list=PLPoQTQyALibn3FUMT0o2WDkw4g0dp6G44. I have also interviewed celebrities like Nollywood star Jim Iyke and His Excellency Ghana’s High Commissioner to the UK, Prof Kwaku Danso Boafo, but my dream is to interview you sir!

I know motivation is key, what has been yours? The spiritual guidance of the good Lord which I’m blessed with is always a great help. I am motivated by my four beautiful children and of course the man of my heart – Alfred!

My husband and I work hard in order to be able to provide the best for our children, so that is motivational enough. The bible also says a wise man leaves an inheritance for his children and that pushes me to do what I do.

Tell your viewers about Season Two of ‘The Nana Churcher Show’? Season Two is going to be thrilling, energising and phenomenal. I travel outside the UK for some riveting, enlightening and in-depth conversations with celebrities, politicians and real life families. You would not want to miss out on Season Two, It will be exciting!

In the next couple of years, I hope the Nana Churcher Show will be….I hope ‘The Nana Churcher Show’ will be a household name, viewing figures will spiral and everyone will be talking about the show. I hope it becomes a show that people can’t wait to watch because it uplifts and encourages them to be part of a positive society and to also give back to the community. I believe each and every one of us has greatness within us but, some have to hear it from other sources and I hope that they get that message and the necessary encouragement and motivation from my show to go on to achieve all their dreams.

and your views on GUBA Awards and its newly formed GUBA Foundation?I would like to hugely applaud Dentaa and the GUBA team for their extraordinary work ethic and amazing organizational skills. I know it is not easy to put up such an event and it is my prayer that GUBA always get the support they need. The GUBA Foundation is a wise thing to do; there is nothing more fulfilling than giving back to the community especially the way the GUBA Foundation is raising awareness about autism. I am a great fan of GUBA and I enjoy the event nights as well. I wish both GUBA and its Foundation many more successful years to come.

Any advice for a potential career in the entertainment industry?I would say go for it but for the right reasons. The entertainment industry is tough, but like other industries you have to love what you do. Always remember success doesn’t happen

overnight so, work hard and have fun whilst doing so. It is important to network with the right people and to never be afraid to ask and learn. Let integrity and respect be part of you and always have a great attitude, and beyond the sky will be your limit. I always end by saying ‘ you will win if you don’t quit’, and you just said it in the beginning.

Uncle George loves ‘The Nana Churcher Show’ and so does team GUBA. We encourage everyone to tune in to this exciting and entertaining show.

Season Two of the Nana Churcher show is a 13 episode show available now on VOX Africa TV (Sky 218) on Sundays at 6:30 pm

LANDLORD TRAINING

The Ultimate Masterclass in Vetting & Checking Your Tenants.

Thursday 30 May 2013 – Central London 5pm Start In this 3 hour training course you will learn how to vet & check your own tenants

thoroughly! And that is a fact!

For too often many referencing agencies & letting agents have been putting landlord’s property at risk by granting tenancies to tenants who have not been properly vetted & checked. Their service is fundamentally flawed. It is vital that every landlord understands that in order to do a thorough vet & check on any prospective tenant is doing more than just a confirmation of employment and tenancy, & trusting the information given. What will you learn from this course? You will learn how to instantly recognise some of the mistakes rogue tenants make on applications You will learn how to be able to vet & check all of the 5 main tenant category types You will learn how to effectively drill down on the information provided by the tenant You will understand what is needed to stay compliant & keep things legal, whilst creating professional

standards

What else is included? Customised electronic forms & letters to use throughout the entire tenancy vetting process immediately

loaded onto your laptop on the day for instant use. These pre-designed, declaration compliant forms saves you time and money Your own EBP – Effective Bullet Point plan for use with this particular process will take the guess work out of

vetting any category type of tenant

DO YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE ASKING?

by Pastor Chidi J. C. Akunma

Faith liFt

PANACHEE-MagazinE

BelieFDay after day, like the mother of

Zebedee brothers we sometimes make requests or supplications beyond

our comprehension (Matthew 20:17-23). Sometimes our prayers are made to impress the audience around us, or our tiny circle of friends. Often, in ignorance, we make pious prayers that lack sincerity of purpose. Our petitions to God are borne out of the lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes and pride of life. That is why Brother James says, “You ask, and receive not because you ask amiss, that you may consume it upon your lust” James 4:3.

How many times have we heard people praying thus “ God give me patience, “God humble me”, “God give me faith, “God break me, mould me, and melt me”, e.t.c., found in all those our seemingly pious statements and our flowery prayer language and charismatic semantics.

It is interesting to discover how God answers our prayers when He finds solid commitment in our hearts. Let us prayerfully study hereunder a discovery made by a Pilgrim who had suffered the hard dealings of God in the School of Prayer and Discipline.

Faith liFt

Chidi JC Akunma is the Founder and Senior Pastor of Dominion Faith Ministries International, Southampton, England. A Church that is committed to transforming lives, empowering

people and raising a people of the Kingdom to fulfil their dominion mandate.

He is a dynamic preacher, teacher, leadership mentor, business consultant, and motivational and inspirational speaker. His passion is to empower people. His belief is reflected in his

passion for teaching and mentoring all those who come into his sphere of influence.

QUOTE: WHEN WE ASK………The LORD for FAITH, He allows us to lay off work with no visible means to pay our bills, and then allows illness to take its toll.

We ask the Lord for LOVE, He allows the most unappreciative, caustic, holier-than-thou -individual to confront us at every turn.

We ask the LORD for PATIENCE, the babies squall, the children fight and the teenagers are not only slow to learn but refuse to follow our Lord. Then we hit all of the red lights on the way to work. The car knocked out and once again we are late for work, only to find ourselves stared down by a fiery eyed, uncaring, and overbearing supervisor.

We ask for His MEEKNESS and immediately we are placed among those who ridicule everything we say and refer to us as fools or liars. We ask for WISDOM and those around us speak nothing but foolishness. We ask for PEACE and our spouse berates us, the boss explodes and day after day there is constant turmoil.

We ask for KNOWLEDGE, and are forced to be a companion of fools. We ask for KINDNESS and GENTLENESS

only to find ourselves placed with those who have never had a kind word spoken to them and are belligerent and anything but kind.

Some have asked for His glorious LIBERTY, His LOVE, His PATIENCE, His GENTLENESS, KINDNESS and His FAITH, only to find their wings feathers cut. They are confined, shut in with illness. In the natural it is an intolerable situation. But God has heard their prayer. He has given them the liberty to become His “slave” and the servant of others. He has placed them in a situation that His LOVE, His PATIENCE, His GENTLENESS, and His KINDNESS and His FAITH alone will see them through.

Others may ask for His GRACE and HUMILITY, only to find that He has placed in the midst of offence, surely egotists. Some may ask for REST only to find themselves in the position where they constantly help others.

We ask for PEACE and JOY, and heartbreaking news is received that shatters our little world. We ask for TEMPERANCE only to be confronted with excess and grossness on every hand. We ask for GOODNESS, only to be tempted to be unkind and show our lack of goodness.

Page 94: PANACHE E-MAGAZINE - issue 15

What is happening? Jesus Christ is answering our prayers. For how can we show faith unless we prove our faith in Him? How can we show love unless we are placed with the unlovely? For even a sinner loves those who love him. How else may we exhibit patience, unless there is a need for it? How else may we show His patience, His love, His gentleness, His humility and His meekness unless we are placed with the critical, the offensive and the unruly or those who refuse to understand? How else may we allow Him to give us His peace, except it be in the midst of turmoil?

Not a day passes without the Lords giving us the opportunity to prove that our covenant with Him, that of going all the way with Him regardless of the circumstance; were not merely words. When we declared, TAKE ME, BREAK ME, PURGE ME, MELT ME, and MOULD ME into a vessel of your choosing.

So, each day in every situation of each day, Christ Jesus is giving us the privilege to crucify self and allow His LIFE, HIS GRACE, HIS TRUTH, HIS LOVE, HIS PATIENCE, HIS HUMULITY, HIS MEEKNESS, HIS KNOWLEDGE, HIS KINDNESS, HIS FAITH – HIS ALL to come through us. But like babes who are blinded by their tears we yowl, we kick, we scream, and our eyes are so filled with tears that day after day we fail to see that our Lord Jesus is answering our prayers, those prayers to be like Him, showing forth His attribute. And brothers and sisters we shall remain as babes in Jesus going our daily antics and tantrums and sucking our thumbs and clinging to our security blankets until we are willing for self to be crucified and allow His life to come forth in resurrection power.

Last WordMay I use this opportunity to invite you to enter into a personal relationship with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. I would therefore, like you to say with me this simple prayer.

If you have prayed this prayer, you are now born again. Congratulations!

I will like to hear from you. Please contact me and let me know of your decision. I have a free gift for you to help you begin your new life in Jesus.

So, it’s May, and after 3 months of studying, assignments, and redoing the same assignments after my laptop

was stolen, I’m back on the hallowed pages of Panache, and back in the real world - the football world.

At least I didn’t miss much - well, except Manchester United’s 20th title, the 7-0 dethroning of Barcelona by Bayern Munich and the apparent outbreak of the zombie apocalypse.

But first, a black issue. At the end of April, the Professional Footballer’sAssociation held their annual awards ceremonyat a swanky London hotel. At some point in theorganising process, the committee must havedecided theywould like some liveentertainmenttokickofftheshow.Whatkindofentertainment?Acomedian,perhaps. In theory, there would be nothing wrong withthe above thought process, except that ReginaldD Hunter is not exactly known for clean jokes.TheAmericanisaverycleverand, inmyopinion, very funnyman, but it would only have taken afiveminute Google search to learn that perhaps

Manchester UnitedBack in September, I predicted in this verycolumn that itwouldbedifficult to call thetitle race between United and City. As itturned out, the Red Devils reclaimed thetitleforarecord20thtimewithfourgamestospare.WhilethegoalsofRobinVanPersieultimatelydecided the contest,ManchesterCity have been very disappointing. FingershavebeenpointedattheabilitiesofmanagerMancini, as well as at the motivation of agroupofplayersthatseemtohavebecomeapathetic.Whatever the reasons, City havehad too many lacklustre performancesandare likely tofinishmorethan10pointsbehind their rivals this season. Luis Suarez - El ZombiAgain!? Again!? ANOTHER BITE!? Icannotgetmyheadaroundwhyhewoulddo this. What kind ofmaniac bites peoplefornoreason?

As a Liverpool fan, I love Suarez, and I,like most fans, have defended him to thehilt on every misdemeanour so far. He ismisunderstood, weproclaim. It’s a culturaldifference, hedidn’tmeanit.

Butthistime,thereisnodefencetobemade.IvanovichtackledSuarezfairlyandjockeyedhimawayfromtheball,andtheUruguayanreactedbydigginghisteeth intotheSerb’sarmlikeitwastheclimacticsceneinShaunoftheDead.

There has been a lot of furore about theseverity of the 10-match ban handeddownby the F.A.,most of it regarding theinconsistency of the governing body’sdiscipline system. Specifically, under therule against retro-active refereeing, the FAcould only act because the referee didn’tsee the incident at thetime. KunAguero’stwo-footedstamponDavidLuizandCallumMacmanaman’shorror‘tackle’onMassadioHaidara both slipped under the radarrecentlybecausetheywerepunishedonthespot,asdidJermainDefoe’sverysimilarbiteonJavierMascheranoin2006.Theoretically,ifSuarezhadsimplypunchedIvanovicintheface, hewould have faced only a red cardandthreegameban.

TheF.A.’sdisciplinarysystemisundoubtedlyflawed and corrupted (explain to me howan ‘independent judging panel’ can beindependent when one of the membersis an F.A. governor and they are told theparametersforwhatverdicttheycancometo before the inquest starts?) but the realissue here is that this is the second time

Suarez has, without provocation, bittenanother player. They are not deliberatelyputtingtheirlimbsinhismouth, andhedoesnotsufferfromrabies, hejustneedstolearntocontrolthesebizarreimpulseswhichoftenseemtocloudhisjudgement.

He is undoubtedly one of the best playersin the Premier League, perhaps in Europe, butheisdespisedoutsideofLiverpool(andin, amongst Everton fans) because of thecontroversywhich follows him everywherehe goes - aside from the large events likethis bite and 2011’s racism scandal, thereare countless questionable tackles, stampsandscraps.

I am convinced this is the only reasonBalehasbeatenhim to all the awards thisseason.Wealllovethatheisafighterandahardworker,butheneedstoreignhimselfinslightlyandplaywithintherules.

As a Liverpool fan, I hope he uses his 10-gamehiatus,andthissummer,tofinallygethimselfinorder,fortheteam’ssake,andthesakeoftheleagueingeneral.Itwouldbeniceif he could stop being a pantomime villainandtheleaguecouldfinallyappreciateoneofitsbestplayers
