PALNI PBWorks Quickstart GuideOptimizing the Search bars

1. Workspace Search Bar (Recommended Search Bar):This first search bar will search the entire PALNI workspace.

EXAMPLE OF HOW TO USE:

Example #1: Find a fileMission: I want to find the notes from a board meeting in September 2007.

1. I type "board" in the search bar and a drop down menu appears. The folders and files listed in the drop down menu are those that are most relevant to the word I searched.2. I have 3 options from here:

a. Click on the folder labeled, "Board Meetings 2007" which directs me to all the board meetings in 2007.

b. Click on the link, "or look in page content for: board" which will look throughout the entire workspace for anything that contains the word, "board." This includes the page titles AND all pages' content. This option is extremely beneficial if one would like to see when and where something, such as Primo Implementation, is discussed.c. Click enter on the keyboard which will take me to the same resulting page as option b.

3. My best option in this case is option a, where I click on the labeled folder. The result list for option b and c are long and can be hard to navigate through if you looking for a specific file. For tracking discussions about a specific topic, option b and c are the best choices.

Example #2: Using keywords effectivelyMission: I want to find all documents concerning finances.

1. I type "finances" in the search bar resulting in only one option, to click, "look in page content for: finances."2. Clicking on it gives me a large list of files that concern finances but I want more relevant files.3. I return to the search bar and type a keyword variant of "finances">>> "financial"4. A drop down menu appears for this keyword with more specific files and folders and the resulting search reveals more relevant results.

2. Workspace Search Bar:This is not the recommended search bar as it will only search within an already opened folder. It will NOT search within any folders that are nested within the opened folder. To search within nested folders you must first open them and then proceed to search for the file you are looking for. It will NOT search page content either, just titles, unlike the workspace search bar.It is recommended to minimize your search by first opening the appropriate folders.

Ex: If I want to find the Staff Report for the January EC Meeting of 2009, I must open the 2009 folder of EC Meetings, then the January folder, then I can effectively search for the Staff Report even though there are only 5 files to sort through.

This type of search is beneficial if a folder contains a large amount of files.

3. Helpful Notes:--- Search results are sorted by weight, which means that a page with a lot of the mention of the keyword will show up at the top of the list.--- Adding "tag:foo" anywhere in the search box will constrain the search to only look at pages tagged "foo" (and their comments). You can't yet perform a search that will only look at pages tagged with both "foo" and "bar". (I.e., you can only search with one tag restriction at a time)---Adding "folder:foo" anywhere in the search box will constrain the search to only look at pages in folder "foo" (and their comments). This doesn't yet apply to files in that folder.
