The federal face of the Indian River Lagoon

WASHINGTON, D.C. — In less than a year in office freshman U.S. Rep. Patrick Murphy, D-Jupiter, has made unprece-dented strides in putting state issues on Washington’s radar. Murphy, a mere 30 years old, sits on two congressional com-mittees and is a member of 22 caucuses for issues relating to the advancement of veter-ans, disaster relief funding, the environment, Florida ports and small businesses. The Key Largo native, who

earned his bachelor of science in business administration from the University of Miami, graduating with dual majors in accounting and finance, campaigned on the principle of bipartisanship against the oftentimes polarizing Allen West in the costliest congressional and controversial campaigns of 2012. Murphy made good on his

campaign promise to work across party lines, teaming

up with Republican counter-parts, including U.S. Reps. Tom Rooney, R-Okeechobee and Trey Radel, R-Fort Myers, to garner the president’s attention on key issues destroying Treasure Coast waterways. The accoun-tant by trade is no stranger to environmental disasters. In 2010, Murphy gathered oil

skimmers and packed a bag bound for Louisiana to help in the massive cleanup efforts of the country’s most catastrophic oil spill in history. Having lived on the Florida Coast his entire life, Murphy said the crusade for clean water is one he will never

As an experienced hearing aid wearer I know the importance of getting accurate

information about your hearing loss and all of the hearing aids out there. I have

seen all of the big ads talking about hearing aids, I was so confused. I attended

one of Joe Mutter’s Hearing healthcare informational seminars. I was so pleased

to find out that the seminar was just that; education and information for people

with hearing loss and how to make smart decisions when shopping for a hearing

aid and a hearing healthcare provider. I was very impressed with the information

given out and decided to work with Joe for my new hearing aid, I am so glad I did!

Joe provides a great service and does not do the old bait and switch routine. I’ve

had my new hearing aid for over a year now and could not be more pleased

with Joe, the hearing aid, the exceptional care, and service Joe

puts into ensuring that I hear as well as I possibly can!

I strongly encourage anyone thinking about getting a

hearing aid or if you suspect you have hearing loss to at-

tend one of Joe’s seminars. Joe provides excellent service

anytime you need him, he will be there for you!

We’ll expose the truth about hearing aids

quit.On the eve of his wildly suc-

cessful Oct. 3 congressional briefing on the Indian River Lagoon, attended by more than 20 members of Congress, the youngest member of the 113th Congress sat down for a one-on-one in his Washington, D.C., office. Murphy, who didn’t take a paycheck during the 16-day partial shutdown, talked about his future in politics, the gov-ernment shutdown, environment and more.Q: What was the atmosphere

like in Congress in the days and hours leading up to the shut-down? Is it has bad as what we see on TV? Is (the partisanship) as tense?A: Confusion, frustration, dis-

belief. I was very — and still am every day — growing increasing-ly more frustrated with the fact that we’re shutdown. It’s almost surreal, it’s like a bad dream that I’m just waiting to wake up from. This couldn’t possi-bly be happening. I’ve been in Congress for eight months and I campaigned against this sort of ridiculous behavior and eight months into office, this is what goes on because leadership can’t get their act together. It’s an embarrassment for this country.

Q: What type of message does a

shutdown send? A: The shutdown itself, the

government shutdown, sends a message to Americans and to I think a lot of other coun-tries that our government isn’t functioning, our Congress isn’t functioning, that we’re not doing our basic duties of funding the government. That sort of uncer-tainty, is bad overseas. Domes-tically speaking, I’m talking of businesses of all sizes, every day that say ‘Hey, you know I was getting ready to go buy a new piece of equipment, you know, I was going to buy a new piece of land to build a new building, I was going to hire five more people, but I don’t know what is going to happen.’ That sort of uncertainty has left a lot of people, unfortunately, having to keep their money on the side-lines because they don’t have faith in our country. They don’t know what interest rates are going to be in a week from now, in a day from now. If we default, interest rates will go up. They don’t know what the regulatory environment is going to be like. Big-picture items that we have solutions for like immigration, like reducing the debt. These are big-picture items we can solve and we’re not doing the basics, so that the big-picture things aren’t even on the table right now. That’s just sad.

Q: Is being a Florida native the

reason why the lagoon issue has struck you and been a big concern?A: Yes. Growing up as kid in

the Florida Keys, I have two uncles that are charter boat fisherman. I grew up fishing and diving and lobstering and en-joying the outdoors never really understanding how the two were connected, the environment and the economy. But I grew up and realized, wow, they’re really in-tegral and intimately connected in Florida. Our local economy is based in tourism and if you take away the nice, clean water, you take away the fishing and the diving, etc. and the Ever-glades National Park, then those tourists aren’t going to have any reason to come and there goes the economy. So, certainly, yeah, it’s been a big part of my passion for this issue.

Q: Looking at the water, how do you feel emotionally?A: That’s why I’ve got this bot-

tle of water that I’m carrying it around to show other members of Congress. I brought it to Sen. (Bill) Nelson (D-Fla.) last week. He had that same bottle in 2005 when we had all of these dis-charges, so I got to talk to him about it. Part of it is just having that visual for those people to see to make that pitch so they

from chronic health issues at age 77, once served as vice president of the Florida Wildlife Federation and became president in 1972. In 1972, Johnny and his wife Mariana were hired as the first executive director and executive secretary of the Federation.“I don’t feel like I can even hold a

match to what they’re done. I told my Grandma, ‘You guys must be really strong because there are days when I get really frustrated, I get down,’” Roberts said.During his 16 years with the

Federation, Johnny Jones lobbied 67 environmental bills through the Florida Legislature.“Florida has lost a beloved son

and unfaltering environmental leader,” former Gov. Charlie Crist said the day Jones died. “Be-cause of his resolute actions, the Kissimmee River and Everglades restoration efforts are closer to reality while generations to come will enjoy countless acres of wild places because he cared.” Just days before embarking on

the historic trip, Roberts had a conversation with her grand-mother.“Is there a way the discharges

can be changed, I mean it’s the Army Corps, are we really going to be able to take this out of their hands?” Roberts asked Mariana Jones.“She believes it can be done. It

was encouraging,” Roberts said. “She really believes we have some momentum going on here in the movement.”Roberts, who recently moved to

Stuart from Palm City because of financial reasons, said no stack of bills thanks to the Great Recession was too tall to keep her from lobbying lawmakers on Capitol Hill.“I will do anything. I will clean

your house, pick your weeds, we have a pool service business, we will come clean your pool, what-ever, so that I could get a couple days off from work,” Roberts said

of the lengths she was willing to go to in order to attend the meeting.Friends and public donations

during events held by the “River Warriors” made the trip possi-ble, Roberts said.“These are wonderful people,”

Roberts said of her fellow activ-ists. “They energize me and give me excitement in everything again.” The Florida native said her two

children are also a motivating factor in her efforts to save the lagoon.“I’ve always been on these

waters. I was born and raised in West Palm and my family, that’s what we do for entertainment, go to the beach, go to the river, fish,” Roberts said. “I care very much about this

for my kids. My son just turned 18. He just went to get his captain’s license,” Roberts said. “He’s a wonderful fisherman. He’s gifted. He does all kinds of fishing.” “This is where he wants to

spend his career and I want him to be able to do that and with-out the clean water, he’s not going to be able to.”Roberts said in all of her years,

the lagoon is in its worst state.“It makes me mad the fact that

the government has said they backed this and approved this and pushed for this, but they’re turning around and taking things that they’ve said they’re going to do back or just not moving fast enough. It’s been going on for 80 years,” she said.Roberts, who was thrilled with

the congressional turnout, said a fix won’t be easy, but is finally on the right track.“They do need to keep cleaning

the water with the natural flow and natural way,” said Roberts, who believes the solution begins in Kissimmee.

understand. To think that you used to see through that wa-ter — years ago that was blue, beautiful water — is appalling. Another story that really stands out to me is I was with (St. Luc-ie County) Commissioner (Chris) Dzadovsky when we were laying those oysters and he got that lit-tle cut and he got a little water in there and it turned into these lesions.

Q: With the lagoon, what is the fix?A: That’s one of the compli-

cated parts. There’s no silver bullet. There’s no one easy solution. If there was, it would have been done. This is decades in the making. The Army Corps really messed up the Everglades in the 1920s and moved every-thing around, I mean that’s just what happened. A lot of inter-est, a lot Ag (agriculture), a lot of things have happened along the way to put us in this posi-tion. So, there’s been a lot of research, a lot of scientists, a lot of money spent on understand-ing how we can fix it and get it as close back to original form as possible. But that takes money and that takes time. I think we realistically need a 10- to 15-year horizon, you know, to really get this, not (to) say solved, but better. And that’s hard to stom-ach for a lot of people because this has been going on for a very

long time, but I do believe that’s the reality of it. There is no easy solution, but the more we get things like C-44 (canal improve-ments) funded and CEPP (Cen-tral Everglades Planning Proj-ect) and CERP (Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan), fixing the Herbert Hoover Dike, get C-43 (canal) funded, raise the Tamiami Trail. You get them all together and there’re all little pieces of the pie, but when you put them all together it adds up. And there’s some low-hanging fruit, some easy things we can do, like the water conservation, the water farming that’s rela-tively inexpensive and an area that we hope we can try to get some funding from the (Obama) administration to keep that water from ever getting to Lake Okeechobee.

Q: What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned in politics?A: Always do what you believe

is best. Don’t ever listen to any party or any sort of one constit-uency group. You have to No. 1 live with your votes, but you have to justify it and you have to be comfortable with those. I haven’t learned it the hard way or anything, but it’s just I’ve al-ways believed that and it’s been reiterated as I’ve been here lon-ger, because there are a certain amount of games that get played up here. And as long as you

Beach goers to be cautious of saltwater bacteria

TREASURE COAST — State health officials want beach goers to beware of a silent saltwater killer that’s claimed the lives of 10 this year and infected a total of 33.Vibrio vulnificus is a natural-

ly-occurring bacteria found in warm coastal waters during the summer. People can become infected with the bacteria when they eat raw shellfish, particu-larly oysters. People with open wounds can also be exposed through direct contact with sea-water.The flesh eating bacteria tends

to thrive best in brackish water like the Indian River Lagoon, but is a separate issue from the toxic bacteria and algae Lake Okeechobee discharges have brought, said Martin County Health Department environmen-tal health director Bob Washam. But an out-of-state study may

suggest otherwise.Vibrio vulnificus is “ not neces-

sarily related to a specific pollu-tion source. The two most signif-icant factors for finding them in surface waters are temperature and salinity,” according to infor-mational documents posted on the state of Maryland’s Depart-ment of the Environment’s web-site. “Recent research has suggested

that nutrients may play a role invibrio concentration. V. vulnifi-cus bacteria are not commonly found in the winter when water temperatures are low, but may be common in the summer and early fall when water temperatures are

warm,” the literature also states. Those with weakened immune

systems are especially suscepti-ble, Washam said.“People that have had health

conditions where their immune systems aren’t that strong are af-fected by it most,” Washam said. Washam added those with liver disease have a heightened vulner-ability to infection. So far, Martin County has had

no reported cases. St. Lucie County has had two, reported between April and October when the bacteria is most prominent. Both cases were associated with consuming raw or undercooked shellfish and open wound expo-sure to seawater, said Arlease Hall, public information officer for the Florida Department of Health in St. Lucie County. To help prevent vibrio vulnificus

infections, Clint Sperber, depu-ty administrator of the Florida Department of Health in St. Lucie County “urges residents and visitors to not eat raw oysters or other raw shellfish and to avoid exposure of open wounds or bro-ken skin to warm salt or brackish water.”Ingestion of Vibrio vulnificus

can cause vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain. It can also cause an infection of the skin when open wounds are exposed to warm seawater, which may lead to skin breakdown and ulcers.Healthy individuals typically

develop a mild disease. Vibrio vulnificus infections in individ-uals with a compromised im-mune system can cause severe and life-threatening illness with symptoms like fever, chills and

stick to your principles and your core, I think you’ll come out OK.

Q: Your proudest accomplish-ment in office?A: I would say two things. One,

the amount of constituents we’ve helped out. We’ve been able to help with hundreds of thousands, maybe near a mil-lion by now. At least hundreds of thousands of veterans due benefits, seniors that are due Social Security and Medicare checks. So that is very reward-ing, being able to call those constituents, that may or may not have voted for me that mat-ter, that may or may not like the government, and say ‘Hey, X,Y and Z. Your veterans benefits you’ve been fighting for two and a half years, we just talked to the VA.’ And that’s because of the hard work of my team and I thank them for that. No. 2, a proud accomplishment would be early on we were able to get some money back to the district for beach renourishment, for inlet dredging and Everglades restoration. That again, was the hard work of my team and very happy to have gotten something substantive done.

Q: Best part of what you do?

A: Being able to help constit-uents. There’s a lot of boloney up here in D.C. that you have to deal with. When you go home and you talk to the senior or the constituent you were able to help, something tangible, that makes it all worth it.

Q: Allen West. What comes to mind when you think of him? And how was campaigning against him?A: I’m glad the campaign is

behind us and I’m very happy to be up in D.C. now serving the 18th district. I really don’t put a lot of thought into what he’s do-ing. I still see him on the news here and there, but my focus is serving the district.

Q: Election season is coming up. Worst case, you don’t get re-elected, what would your life look like after that?A: I guess I’ll tell you on Nov.

7, 2014. I don’t know. The way I look at election and re-election is the more I can focus on my job and the more that we can do a good job in this office, doing what our job is, you know, help-ing people out and all the things we just mentioned, veterans and seniors and the river and do-ing a good job, then voters will hopefully recognize we’re doing the best we can and will vote to re-elect us.

septic shock, or decreased blood pressure. A recent study showed that people with these pre-exist-ing medical conditions were 80 times more likely to develop Vib-rio vulnificus bloodstream infec-tions than healthy people. Wound infections may also be serious in people with weakened immune systems, according to the Florida Department of Health’s website. The infection is usually treated by antibiotics. The bacteria is common in Flor-

ida waters during the summer and is a rare cause of disease, Washam said. It is also underre-ported, according to the Florida

Department of Health’s website. Between 1988 and 2006, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention received reports of more than 900 Vibrio vulnificus infections from the Gulf Coast states, where most cases occur. Before 2007, there was no nation-al surveillance system for Vibrio vulnificus. In 2011, the year saw 35 con-

firmed cases and 13 deaths in Florida. Last year, the state had 27 cases and nine deaths. This year, as of press time, there have been 33 cases and 10 deaths. Deaths occurred in Broward, Flagler, Glades, Lee, Leon, Mon-roe, Okaloosa and Walton coun-ties.

Latest generation joins Greatest Generation on Honor Flight

PALM CITY — The latest gener-ation joined the Greatest Gener-ation on Honor Flight. On Satur-day, Oct. 19, Dillon Mason, Martin County High School Air Force Ju-nior ROTC cadet joined World War II veteran Thomas Ochalek on the Southeast Florida hub’s last trip. “I learned about a few key bat-

tles,” Mason said after the flight. “I’m a fan of history, so I had some background. But learning about it from their perspective was inter-esting.” It’s the second time the Educa-

tion Foundation of Martin County has paid for Air Force and Army Junior ROTC students to be Hon-or Flight guardians. Lisa Rhodes, executive director of

the foundation, said many of the board members have been Honor Flight guardians. “We know what an amazing expe-

rience it is and we thought what a fantastic (educational) opportuni-ty for our students in ROTC,” she said in a phone interview before the flight. Two other Martin Junior ROTC

students were also on the flight: William McClure, Jensen Beach High School, and Aaron Duerksen, South Fork High School, Stuart. Martin County and Jensen Beach highs have Air Force Junior ROTC units. South Fork an Army Junior ROTC unit. The Junior ROTC in-structors at each school were able to select one student each. As guardians, the students spent

the day with one World War II veteran each looking after their

needs. The youngest World War II veterans are now 87. The most fa-mous Honor Flight stop is the Na-tional World War II Memorial on the National Mall. However, there are others. In an interview before the flight,

Mason said he was looking for-ward to spending the day with and caring for a World War II veteran. “My grandfather was in World

War II, but he died when I was

young,” the cadet said. Although deceased, Mason said

his paternal grandfather still has a strong presence in his family. “I’ve always heard a lot about

what he did (in World War II),” he said. “He was in the signal corps.” In addition to paying $400 a

student to send the youths, the foundation picked up the tab to send Chief Master Sgt. Rod “Rod-dy” Hartsook, instructor at Martin County High. He said Martin High has 144 students in the four-year cadet program, and there were a number of good contenders for the Honor Flight spot. He said much of the choice came down to Ma-son’s ability to coordinate numer-ous things at once. “Dillon (Mason) is our logistics

person,” Hartsook said in a phone interview before the trip. Hartsook, too, was a guardian, in

addition to being a Martin County School District employee to over-see the students. The students will make presen-

tations about the Honor Flight trip at the foundation’s Nov. 12 meeting, 5:30 p.m. at the Stuart/Martin County Chamber of Com-merce, 1650 S. Kanner Highway, Stuart. Rhodes, who was a guard-ian on a previous flight, said the foundation hopes, too, that the students will make presentations at their schools. She said Honor Flight guardians get crash cours-

es in World War II history. “My veteran was 93 years old,”

she said. “He was on the beach in Normandy. It was so inspiring being with him. It was so amaz-ing; the stories, the work ethic. We shared lots of laughs and lots of tears all the way up and all the way back.” Todd Tucker, vice chairman

of Southeast Honor Flight, said veterans always appreciate the guardians, but they especially like the youth. “The veterans really enjoy spend-

ing time with the young kids, es-pecially the ones in the (Junior ROTC) program,” he said in a phone interview. While rules generally require

guardians to be 18 or older, Tuck-er said the Honor Flight Network allows exceptions for youths in programs such as Junior ROTC, Boy and Girl Scouts and other programs. In the past, the Road to Victory Military Museum, Stuart, has sponsored guardians selected from its 804th Venture Crew. The Oct. 19 trip was Southeast

Florida Honor Flight’s 15th. The hub has taken more than 1,000 veterans. Back in February, Mar-tin County residents opened their hearts and wallets to give $60,000 to help the hub take veterans to Washington, D.C. “We collected $60,000 in three

days,” Tucker said in a previous

interview. “One hundred percent of that money goes to a flight each year and this is the flight.” Among those that got involved

early on in Southeast Florida Honor Flight was Martin Coun-ty Firefighters and Paramedics, International Association of Fire Fighters Local 2959, which leads what’s turned out to be the larg-est fundraisers for the flights: an annual fill-the-boot drive. Back in February, firefighters from Mar-tin County and other fire-rescue agencies in the county went to parking lots and street corners to ask folks to fill firefighters’ boots with money. Flights cost about $80,000, or

nearly $1,000 for each veteran taken. Honor Flight figures the veterans paid their ways by serv-ing in World War II, and charges them nothing. The national World War II Memo-

rial was opened in 2004. Private donations funded it. The fund-raising campaign, which started in the early 1990s, raised nearly $200 million. Design and con-struction of the memorial cost about $182 million. The remain-der went to groundbreaking and dedication ceremonies, along with a maintenance fee required by the Commemorative Works Act. The Honor Flight Network is a

national program that takes World War II veterans to see the memo-

rial. The flights began, almost by accident, a year after it was erect-ed. Honor Flight Southeast Florida, called a “hub,” started in 2009. There’s a lot of urgency around

everything Honor Flight does. Ac-cording to a 2008 Associated Press estimate, the once 16.1 million World War II veterans are dying at a rate of more than 1,100 a day. Now fewer than two million are liv-ing, according to the Department of Veterans Affairs. No one has an exact daily death

count, but the VA, AP and others have developed the same estimate by using long-form census data, VA data, and standard mortali-ty tables. The VA estimates that America will have almost no World War II veterans by 2020. Rhodes said donors can give spe-

cifically for the Martin County Ed-ucation Foundation to pay for Ju-nior ROTC students to go on the Honor Flight trips. Mason said he’s considering join-

ing the Air Force after high school. “Probably just a stint,” he said. After that, he wants to finish col-

lege.

Palm City’s Rob Ranieri tapped to head up Boys & Girls Clubs

PALM CITY — Rob Ranieri has a longer drive to work these days. The former chief operating officer at The Firefly Group donned the same hat for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Martin County at the beginning of October. Ranieri said not having a Boys & Girls Clubs when he was young makes him value the organization. “I’ve had a pretty good business

career,” the 49-year-old said. “I’ve always enjoyed what I do, but I’ve never worked a mission like this.” Ranieri, his wife, Stacy, and

their two children live in Palm City, where Stacy founded a pub-lic-relations and marketing firm, The Firefly Group. The family has done volunteer work for the orga-nization for about a decade. “I used to own a couple car

washes,” Ranieri said. “The then development director came to me for (financial) support.” Ranieri said giving a few bucks

quickly turned into hours and sweat, too. The New York native graduated

from George Washington Univer-

sity with a journalism degree. He worked for a family business in New York that eventually sold. He relocated to the area in 1993 to take a job. As he starts his new position at

the Boys & Girls Clubs, it has about 1,700 members county-wide. The H. Wayne Huizenga branch at 1150 S.W. Martin Downs Blvd. has slightly more than 310. The organization has five locations. Ranieri said it’s

Local producer who was subplot in shutdown tragedy gets happy ending

TREASURE COAST — The re-cent 16-day partial federal gov-ernment shutdown looked like it was going to drop the curtain on Curtain Call Productions. Port St. Lucie’s Jake Sanders, artistic director, looks back at the partial shutdown with a storyteller’s eye. “I think it’s a little tragic come-

dy,” he said. “It’s definitely good theater. Looking at it as a story, it’s a great story. It’s so tragic, but had a comic element.” Before the shutdown’s end,

Sanders was looking at it through the eyes of a disaster-story vic-tim — perhaps the one that has the valued item he can’t or won’t release even as the fire nears, or cliff starts crumbling. Act 1: the situation. Sanders had an appointment

with the Internal Revenue Ser-vice scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 1. Congress’ inability to pass a new federal budget or continu-ing resolution abruptly cancelled that and countless other appoint-ments. “For two months I waited for

that Tuesday,” Sanders said in an interview before the shutdown ended on Thursday, Oct. 17. “Un-fortunately it was on the Tuesday the government shut down.”Act 2: the escalation. Curtain Call put on five shows

on a provision not-for-profit status last season. As an upstart theater company largely depen-dent on donations and other benefits of a not-for-profit status, heading close to a new season without one was a psychological thriller Sanders didn’t want to star in. “I’m not sure how our status will

be affected should the shutdown run much longer, because there’s no one there to answer ques-tions,” he said at the time. A big reason Curtain Call need-

ed that not-for-profit status was because it’d moved from the Lyric Theatre, Stuart, to the Jensen Beach Performing Arts Center, Jensen Beach High School. The Martin County School District re-quires not-for-profit status to rent the theater, Sanders said. The possibility of a theater shut-

down stood to cost local actors and workers temporary jobs. Sanders said last year Curtain

Call employed about 100 through the season. This year, he projects Curtain Call will employ about 120. James Channing, Palm City, landed roles in two of this sea-son’s musicals. Channing said Curtain Call was

one of the reasons he moved back to the Treasure Coast, where he grew up, from Orlando. He was doing some substitution theater work for a large entertainment complex in Central Florida, but Curtain Call gave him a chance to get paid temporary work here. So, he moved back to his hometown. “(Curtain Call) absolutely helps

local businesses to thrive,” Chan-ning said. In addition to the theater work,

Channing has regular work. He said the theater income will help him spend and save a few dol-lars. He said one of Curtain Call’s economic benefits is getting locals to spend entertainment dollars in Martin County, rather than head-ing to places such as Orlando. “Just the cast alone, every night

after a show, we’d go to the same restaurant and spend a lot of money,” Channing said. “You’d see (audience members) after the show going out for drinks.”

Act 3: the resolution. Back in Washington, D.C.,

senators Mitch McConnell and Harry Reid famously worked out a proposal that they turned into a bill to end the shutdown. The Senate passed it 81 to 18, as an election to fill the New Jersey seat left vacant by the death of Sena-tor Frank Lautenberg progressed. The House or Representatives

passed it 285 to 144. Sanders quickly called the IRS

to find out what he’d have to do to get a happy ending for Curtain Call. “We were able to handle every-

thing over the phone,” he said, “I won’t even have to go into the office.”Epilogue. So, with the government shut-

down of 2013 in the history books, Sanders looks at it as a story weaver. He said it had all the elements needed for a good American novel. There were tracks with an approaching train and a hostage tied to them. The story also had a twist, Sanders said. The victim tied to the tracks didn’t await a saving hero. “We had people try to strap

America down to the train tracks, and we did not let them hold that hostage,” he said. “We would not play into it.” Sanders explained, “I think the

American people stood up as the hero. We did not give the politi-cians what they wanted out of this. They did not get to use this as a platform to make themselves look better.” Narratives about the shutdown

vary. In general, most seem to agree that a wing of the Repub-lican Party at first forced the shutdown in an effort to defund or delay implementation of the Af-

fordable Care Act, which is often called Obamacare. Then the hue and cry shifted as the shutdown progressed to more generalized concerns about federal spending and the national debt. The shutdown was replete with

shifting story lines and Repub-licans and Democrats trading charges of intransigence. While most polls during the shutdown seemed to say that voters gave the Republican Party the largest strike on its national popular-ity, no federal political figures emerged unsinged. “I think it’d make a great musi-

cal,” Sanders said. “I like it when politics and musicals combine.” He hopes it’s taken as a morality

play by future congresspersons who consider using the threat of a federal-government blackout as a political tool. Curtain Call will perform “The

Rocky Horror Show” Oct. 31 to Nov. 2. Channing is portraying Brad in that musical. Other mu-sicals this season are “Spelling Bee,” “Assassins” and “Avenue.” Break a leg. It should be covered

under Obamacare.

Sanders explained, “I think the American people stood up

as the hero. We did not give the politicians what they wanted

out of this. They did not get to use this as a platform to make

themselves look better.”

Honor Flight 5k takes offThe Southeast Florida Honor

Flight Twilight 5k is taking off this year at the annual Stuart Air Show. “If it goes well, it’ll be an annu-

al event,” Alex Beringer, executive vice president of Fair Wind Air Charter, said. Beringer came up with the 5k

idea and presented it to the Trea-sure Coast Honor Flight hub’s board of directors. Michael Rob-erts, chairman, said the board im-mediately liked the idea. Roberts is also on the air show’s board of directors. “We’re hoping to get 30 to 50

runners or more,” Roberts said. Beringer’s company, Fair Wind,

was often inconvenienced by the recent 16-day partial federal gov-ernment blackout. The company does a lot of business with the Federal Aviation Administration and Department of Transporta-

tion. Beringer said his company’s inconveniences suddenly seemed tiny when he saw television imag-es of World War II veterans facing barricades at the National World War II Memorial. “It struck a chord with us and

put us on a mission,” Beringer said. Plans were to use the run as a

fundraiser for Honor Flight, as promotion for the air show, and as a First Amendment exercise against the barriers if the shut-down still had them in place. Senators Mitch McConnell and Harry Reid famously worked out a proposal that was turned into a bill to end the shutdown. The Senate passed it 81 to 18, as an election to fill the New Jersey seat left vacant by the death of Sena-tor Frank Lautenberg progressed. The House of Representatives passed it 285 to 144. Child’s Cry for Help’s fourth an-nual “Weathering Purple Reign” luncheon & silent auction is sponsored by the Peter W. Busch Family Foundation. The event will be taking place on Friday, Nov. 1, at The Legacy Golf & Tennis Club in Port St. Lucie starting at 11:30 a.m. networking/silent auc-tion and lunch at noon. Participants will take part in an

individual Monarch butterfly re-lease to empower others about the transformation one must take to overcome domestic violence. The emphasis of the event is to educate,

raise awareness and empower others about domestic violence while changing societal attitudes and inspiring the com-munity about this epidemic. Do-mestic violence transcends all ethnic, racial and socioeconomic boundaries. Domestic violence is not prejudice to its victims. One out of three women are victims. Domestic violence is a critical na-tional problem affecting all of us in every community. The Keynote speaker is Aria

Dunham, on-air personality for

Sea View’s Radio’s “Game Chang-er” Show, Founder, President & CEO of Platform-Power LLC., ad-vocate and survivor of domestic violence. The silent auction will consist

of an array of decorative baskets and gift certificates ranging from an in-home wine tasting from PRP Wine, a cruise for two nights/three days to the Bahamas from Celebration Cruise Lines, to a de-lightful doggie lovers basket from Love on A Leash, just to name a few. The event’s art sponsor is America’s best loved and most versatile internationally renowned artist, Edna Hibel. October is the National Domestic

Violence Awareness Month, which provides an excellent opportunity for the community to learn more about domestic violence. All proceeds will benefit Child’s

at a rate of more than 1,100 a day. Now fewer than two million are living, according to the Department of Veterans Affairs. No one has an exact death count, but the VA, AP

and others have developed the same estimate by us-ing long-form census data, VA data, and standard mortality tables. The VA estimates that America will have almost no World War II veterans by 2020. The run will be on Friday, Nov. 1, at 5:45 at the

Martin County Airport’s Witham Field, 2100 S.E. Airport Road. The air show, too, begins at 5:45, with a parachute

team delivering an American flag, followed by twi-light performances by the Twin Tiger and AeroShell aerobatic flight teams. The Stewart Air Show contin-ues on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 2 and 3, with acts such as the Lewis & Clark FLS Microjet, Precious

Metal Air Racer, Air Sports Parachute Demonstra-tion Team, and the Julie Clark, John Klatt, Dan Bu-chanan and Gary Ward airshows, along with Elgin Wells’ Starjammer. Veterans will get in free with proof of military ser-

vice. Witham Field was an auxiliary facility to the Naval

Air Station Vero Beach during World War II. It was later named after Paul “Homer” Witham, the first known Navy aviator from Martin County to die in World War II. Registration for the Southeast Florida Honor Flight

STUART — They knew how to party in the 1920s. It was the era of flappers and zoot suits, jazz and bathtub gin. You can party that way, too, at

the Lyric Birthday Bash Benefit Gala on Nov. 16. The evening will begin with a concert at the theater by the Cab Calloway Orchestra, led by the famed orchestra leader’s grandson, Chris. Then it’s on to the Elliott Museum, transformed into a 1920s-style speakeasy. Linda Prange is the Lyric’s di-

rector of development. She is also part of the Lyric’s League of Extraordinary Women and a Few Guys, the group that is planning

SEWALL’S POINT – Save the date for the Junior League of Martin County’s Fifth Annual Ru-dolph’s Reindeer Dash 5k taking place Saturday, Dec. 7. All proceeds support Junior

League yearly volunteer projects aimed to improve our local com-munity and develop the potential of women. Reindeer Dash Chair Denise

Faherty, along with her Commit-tee, are working hard to ensure that this fun-for-all-ages event will be a huge success. Last year’s race drew more than 400 runners and walkers of all ages, and the Junior League is expect-ing even more participants this year! Teams of five or more racers are also encouraged to register, and prizes will be awarded for the top individual and team finishers. This is a great event for the whole family!

The scenic road racecourse begins at Sewall’s Point Town Commons Park at 7 a.m. The 5K race is USATF certified and fea-tures chip timing by MCM Tim-ing & Results. All registered 5k participants will receive a festive, long-sleeve tech shirt! In accordance with the Ju-

nior League’s focus of increasing opportunities for at-risk kids, participation by children and teenagers is encouraged. “Junior Dashers” (ages 7 and under) have the opportunity to get involved and compete in their own sepa-rate 100-yard Tot Trot. Registration will be available

online through Active.com and registration forms will be accessi-ble at Fleet Feet Running Sports in November. The Junior League of Martin

County is an organization of women committed to promoting volunteerism, developing the po-tential of women, and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclu-sively educational and charitable.

the event. She said that the fun starts with the concert. There will be fan dancers and

zoot suits,” she said. “Chris Cal-loway enjoys getting the audience involved, just as his grandfather did. It’s high-energy and colorful. We’re encouraging everyone to come in 1920s clothes.” After the concert, luxury coach-

es will bring audience from the Lyric to the Elliott Museum. “Part of the fun is seeing how the

new Elliott is turned into a speak-easy,” Prange said. “We’re calling it the Cotton Club Speakeasy. We’re doing everything we can to give it the feeling of a speakeasy. Alcohol was banned in the 1920s, so they had alcohol in secret plac-es. They were dingy on the out-side. You had to knock and give the password. Outside, it was din-gy and inside, it was very grand. That’s the fun of what we’re trying to come up with. The whole idea is for it to be fun.” At the Elliott, there will be live

music, food and “bootleg” liquor and a lot of surprises. Prange isn’t giving any of the secrets away. The seating will try to create an intimate and cozy atmosphere, in keeping with the speakeasy theme. While fun is the theme, there is

a serious purpose to the event. “It’s a benefit for the Lyric and

funds will go into the capital cam-

paign,” Prange said. It will go for remodeling and renovations and for residencies by artists and oth-er educational programming. We receive no funds of any kind from any government, city or county, and nothing from national organi-zations that support the perform-ing arts. It’s what we generate.” Prange has high praise for the

committee planning the event. The League of Extraordinary Women and a Few Guys are all volunteers.“This is a new group,

Prange said. “This is the first big thing we’re doing. It’s the first of an annual event. We plan to do this each year.” It’s time for all the flappers and

fellas out there to dust off the sil-ver dresses and spats and prepare to party. It’s for a good cause and a good time is promised, as long as you know the password.

The Lyric Birthday Bash Benefit Gala will be held on Nov. 16. The concert, featuring the Cab Callo-way orchestra, begins at the lyric at 6 p.m. Shuttle buses will take party-goers to the Elliott Museum, transformed into a 1920s-style speakeasy. Tickets for the event are $250

and include a ticket to the concert and party at the Elliott Museum. Sponsorship opportunities are available. For more information, call Linda Prange at (772) 220-1942, Ext. 209 or send an email to [email protected].
