XGlorytoyou,OLord.WhentheywereapproachingJerusalem,atBethphageandBethany,neartheMountofOlives,hesenttwoofhisdisciplesandsaidtothem,‘Gointothevillageaheadofyou,andimmediatelyasyouenterit,youwillfindtiedthereacoltthathasneverbeenridden;untieitandbringit.Ifanyonesaystoyou,“Whyareyoudoingthis?”justsaythis,“TheLordneedsitandwillsenditbackhereimmediately.”’Theywentawayandfoundacolttiednearadoor,outsideinthestreet.Astheywereuntyingit,someofthebystanderssaidtothem,‘Whatareyoudoing,untyingthecolt?’TheytoldthemwhatJesushadsaid;andthey

allowedthemtotakeit.ThentheybroughtthecolttoJesusandthrewtheircloaksonit;andhesatonit.Manypeoplespreadtheircloaksontheroad,andothersspreadleafybranchesthattheyhadcutinthefields.Thenthosewhowentaheadandthosewhofollowedwereshouting,‘Hosanna!BlessedistheonewhocomesinthenameoftheLord!BlessedisthecomingkingdomofourancestorDavid!Hosannainthehighestheaven!’ThenheenteredJerusalemandwentintothetemple;andwhenhehadlookedaroundateverything,asitwasalreadylate,hewentouttoBethanywiththetwelve.Attheend

withanumberofmenarmedwithswordsandclubs,sentbythechiefpriestsandthescribesandtheelders. Nowthetraitorhadarrangedasignalwiththem.Hehadsaid,

guardedwhenyouleadhimaway.Narr Sowhenthetraitorcame,hewentstraightuptoJesusandsaid,

Thenoneofthebystandersdrewhisswordandstruckoutatthehighpriest’sservant,andcutoffhisear.

ThenJesusspoke.X AmIabrigandthatyouhadtosetouttocapturemewithswords

andclubs?IwasamongyouteachingintheTempledayafterdayandyouneverlaidhandsonme.Butthisistofulfilthescriptures.

Narr Andtheyalldesertedhimandranaway.Ayoungmanwhofollowed

himhadnothingonbutalinencloth.Theycaughtholdofhim,buthelefttheclothintheirhandsandranawaynaked.

TheyledJesusofftothehighpriest;andallthechiefpriestsand

the elders and the scribes assembled there. Peter had followedhimatadistance,rightintothehighpriest’spalace,andwassittingwiththeattendantswarminghimselfatthefire.

Narr The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for

evidence against Jesus on which they might pass the death-sentence. But they couldnot find any. Several, indeed, broughtfalse evidence against him, but their evidence was conflicting.Somestoodupandsubmittedthisfalseevidenceagainsthim,

OTHER We heard him say, “I am going to destroy this Templemade by

humanhands,andinthreedaysbuildanother,notmadebyhumanhands”.

Narr But even on this point their evidencewas conflicting. The high

priest then stood up before the whole assembly and put thisquestiontoJesus,

Whatisyourfinding?Narr Andtheyallgavetheirverdict:hedeservedtodie. Someofthemstartedspittingathimand,blindfoldinghim,began

hittinghimwiththeirfistsandshouting,Crowd Playtheprophet!Narr Andtheattendantsrainedblowsonhim. While Peter was down below in the courtyard, one of the high

priest’s servant-girls came up. She saw Peter warming himselfthere,staredathimandsaid,

toPeter,Crowd Youareoneofthemforsure!Why,youareaGalilean.Narr Buthestartedcallingdowncursesonhimselfandswearing,Other Idonotknowthemanyouspeakof.Narr At that moment the cock crew for the second time, and Peter

recalledhowJesushadsaidtohim,‘Beforethecockcrowstwice,youwillhavedisownedmethreetimes’.Andheburstintotears.

First thing in the morning, the chief priests together with theeldersandscribes, in short thewholeSanhedrin,had theirplanready.TheyhadJesusboundandtookhimawayandhandedhimovertoPilate.

Pilatequestionedhim,Other AreyouthekingoftheJews?Narr Heanswered,X Itisyouwhosayit.Narr Andthechiefpriestsbroughtmanyaccusationsagainsthim.Pilate

questionedhimagain,Other Have you no reply at all? See how many accusations they are

bringingagainstyou!Narr But,toPilate’samazement,Jesusmadenofurtherreply. AtfestivaltimePilateusedtoreleaseaprisonerforthem,anyone

theyaskedfor.NowamancalledBarabbaswastheninprisonwiththerioterswhohadcommittedmurderduringtheuprising.WhenthecrowdwentupandbegantoaskPilatethecustomaryfavour,Pilateansweredthem,

handed Jesus over. The chief priests, however, had incited thecrowd to demand that he should release Barabbas for theminstead.ThenPilatespokeagain.

ALLSTANDNarr Thesoldiersledhimawaytotheinnerpartofthepalace,thatis,

the Praetorium, and called the whole cohort together. Theydressedhimupinpurple, twistedsomethornsintoacrownandputitonhim.Andtheybegansalutinghim,

Crowd Hail,kingoftheJews!Narr Theystruckhisheadwithareedandspatonhim;andtheywent

down on their knees to do him homage. And when they hadfinishedmakingfunofhim,theytookoffthepurpleanddressedhiminhisownclothes.

Theyenlistedapasser-by,SimonofCyrene,fatherofAlexanderand

Rufus,whowascominginfromthecountry,tocarryhiscross.TheybroughtJesustotheplacecalledGolgotha,whichmeanstheplaceoftheskull.

Theyofferedhimwinemixedwithmyrrh,butherefusedit.Then

they crucified him, and shared out his clothing, casting lots todecide what each should get. It was the third hour when theycrucifiedhim.Theinscriptiongivingthechargeagainsthimread:‘TheKingof theJews’. Andtheycrucifiedtworobberswithhim,oneonhisrightandoneonhisleft.

Thepassers-byjeeredathim;theyshooktheirheadsandsaid,Crowd Aha!SoyouwoulddestroytheTempleandrebuilditinthreedays!

AllsitorkneelSilencepauseforamomentNarr AndtheveiloftheTemplewastornintwofromtoptobottom.The

centurion,whowasstandinginfrontofhim,hadseenhowhehaddied,andhesaid,

Itwasnowevening,andsinceitwasPreparationDay(thatis,the

vigil of the sabbath), there came Joseph of Arimathaea, aprominentmemberoftheCouncil,whohimselflivedinthehopeofseeingthekingdomofGod,andheboldlywenttoPilateandaskedforthebodyofJesus.Pilate,astonishedthatheshouldhavediedsosoon,summonedthecenturionandenquiredifhewasalreadydead.Havingbeenassuredofthisbythecenturion,hegrantedthecorpsetoJosephwhoboughtashroud,tookJesusdownfromthecross,wrappedhimintheshroudandlaidhiminatombwhichhadbeen hewn out of the rock. He then rolled a stone against theentrance to the tomb. MaryofMagdalaandMary themotherofJosetwerewatchingandtooknoteofwherehewaslaid.

Why,whathathmyLorddone? Whatmakesthisrageandspite? Hemadethelametorun, hegavetheblindtheirsight. Sweetinjuries! Yettheyatthesethemselvesdisplease,and’gainsthimrise. Theyrise,andneedswillhavemydearLordmadeaway;amurderertheysave,thePrinceoflifetheyslay.Yetcheerfulhetosufferinggoes,

thathehisfoesfromthencemightfree.Inlife,nohouse,nohome,myLordonearthmighthave;indeath,nofriendlytomb,butwhatastrangergave.WhatmayIsay?Heav’nwashishome; butminethetomb whereinhelay.

HeremightIstayandsing,nostorysodivine;neverwaslove,dearKing,neverwasgrieflikethine!Thisismyfriend,inwhosesweetpraiseIallmydayscouldgladlyspend.
