You this day, please, send Your Spirit both to inspire and instruct

of Your holy name. Open my ears to hear the glorious truths of

ORDER OF SERVICE

WE PREPARE TO MEET OUR LORD

Hymn: 160 — “All Glory, Laud, and Honor!”

Children’s Procession of Palms WELCOME in the name of Jesus—our Redeemer King! Invocation: Pastor: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

Congregation (sings): Amen.

Our Confession of Sins

Pastor: Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true

heart and confess our sins unto God, our Father, beseeching

Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgive-

ness. Our help is in the name of the Lord.

Congregation (sings): Who made heaven and earth.

Page 3: Palm Sunday - ImmanuelMankato PDN... · Palm Sunday April 13, ... CONGREGATION: Love divine, all loves excelling, Joy of heav’n to earth come down. ... You sons of men, oh, ...

Pastor: I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord.

Congregation (sings): And You forgave the iniquity of

my sin.

Pastor: Almighty God, our Maker and Redeemer, we poor sin-

ners confess unto You that we are by nature sinful and unclean

and that we have sinned against You by thought, word, and

deed. Therefore we flee for refuge to Your infinite mercy, seek-

ing and imploring Your grace for the sake of our Lord Jesus

Christ.

Congregation: O most merciful God, who has given Your

only-begotten Son to die for us, have mercy upon us and

for His sake grant us remission of all our sins; and by

Your Holy Spirit increase in us true knowledge of You and

of Your will and true obedience to Your Word, to the end

that by Your grace we may come to everlasting life;

through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Pastor: Almighty God, our Heavenly Father, has had mercy

upon us and has given His only Son to die for us, and for His

sake forgives us all our sins. To all who believe on His name He

gives the privilege of being children of God and has promised

them His Holy Spirit. He that believes and is baptized shall be

saved. Grant this, Lord, unto us all.

Congregation (sings): Amen.

WE PRAISE OUR LORD

Responsive Reading: Zechariah 9:9-10 NKJV™

P: Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion!

C: Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem!

P: Behold, your King is coming to you;

C: He is just and having salvation, lowly and riding on a donkey, a colt, the foal of a donkey.

P: I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim and the horse from

Jerusalem;

C: The battle bow shall be cut off.

Page 4: Palm Sunday - ImmanuelMankato PDN... · Palm Sunday April 13, ... CONGREGATION: Love divine, all loves excelling, Joy of heav’n to earth come down. ... You sons of men, oh, ...

P: He shall speak peace to the nations;

C: His dominion shall be from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth.

P: Glory be to God!

Congregation (sings):

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as

it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, forevermore.

Amen.

Lord, have mercy upon us.

Christ, have mercy upon us.

Lord, have mercy upon us.

Ride on, ride on, in majesty!

Hark! All the tribes hosanna cry.

O Savior meek, pursue Thy road,

With palms and scattered garments strowed.

Ride on, ride on, in majesty!

In lowly pomp ride on to die.

Bow Thy meek head to mortal pain,

Then take, O Christ, Thy power and reign. [TLH 162:1, 5]

Pastor: The Lord be with you.

Congregation (sings): And with your spirit. Pastor: Let us pray.

Congregation (sings): Amen.

OUR LORD SPEAKS TO US

The Epistle Reading: Philippians 2:5-11 (p. 1043, pew Bible)

Paul urges us to have the same mind (attitude) as Jesus, who

humbled Himself as a bondservant to the point of death on the

cross. Thereafter He was exalted above all to the glory of God

the Father!

Anthem: “Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus”

High School CHOIR:

Come, Thou long-expected Jesus, born to set Thy people free.

From our fears and sins release us, let us find our rest in Thee. Israel’s Strength and Consolation, Hope of all the earth Thou art;

Dear Desire of ev’ry nation, Joy of ev’ry longing heart.

ORGAN INTERLUDE

CONGREGATION: Love divine, all loves excelling, Joy of heav’n to earth come down.

Fix in us Thy humble dwelling, all Thy faithful mercies crown.

Jesus, Thou art all compassion, pure, unbounded love Thou art,

Visit us with Thy salvation, enter ev’ry trembling heart.

WOMEN:

Born Thy people to deliver, born a Child, and yet a King.

MEN:

Born to reign in us forever, now Thy gracious kingdom bring.

WOMEN:

By Thine own eternal Spirit, rule Thou in our hearts alone;

MEN:

By Thine own eternal merit raise us to Thy glorious throne.

ORGAN INTERLUDE

CONGREGATION:

Praise the God of all creation, praise the Father’s boundless love!

Praise the Lamb, our Expiation, Priest and King enthroned above!

Praise the Spirit of salvation, Him by whom our spirits live,

Undivided adoration to the great Jehovah give!

The Gospel Reading: John 6:32-35 (p. 944, pew Bible) God provided Old Testament Israel with manna in the wilder-

ness, even as He now provides us with “the bread of life”—

Jesus, to whom we come and in whom we believe with great

blessing!

Our Confession of Faith in the Apostolic Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty,

maker of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,

Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried.

He descended into hell.

The third day He rose again from the dead.

He ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of God

the Father almighty.

Page 6: Palm Sunday - ImmanuelMankato PDN... · Palm Sunday April 13, ... CONGREGATION: Love divine, all loves excelling, Joy of heav’n to earth come down. ... You sons of men, oh, ...

6

From there He will come to judge

the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit;

the holy Christian Church,

the communion of saints;

the forgiveness of sins;

the resurrection of the body;

and the life everlasting. Amen.

Children's Sermon: “We Welcome Jesus through Worship!”

Children (pre-school-2nd grade) are invited to come forward and

gather around the pastor in the front of the church.

Hymn: “You Sons of Men, Oh, Listen” (tune TLH 75 modified words)

You sons of men, oh, listen: Your hearts and minds prepare;

To hail th’ Almighty Sovereign, O sinners, act with care.

He who by grace alone the gift of life has given,

The promised Lord of heaven, unto our world is shown.

The humble and the lowly God lifts them up on high;

Beneath His feet in anguish the pride-filled souls shall lie.

The hearts, sincere and right, that heed God’s invitation

And make true preparation, they are the Lord’s delight.

Prepare our hearts, King Jesus, Turn not from us aside.

And grant that we receive You this blessed Easter-tide.

From death to life arise; come now to reign within us;

Sustain us and uplift us; receive our joyous cries! Amen.

The Sermon: Text - John 12:1-8, 12-16 (p. 952, pew Bible)

Theme: AS WE APPROACH GOOD FRIDAY AND EASTER—LET US PREPARE OUR HEARTS!

I. To serve, as Martha, in view of Jesus’ presence!

II. To love, as Mary, in view of Jesus’ passion!

III. To worship, as the multitude, in view of Jesus’ coming!

WE OFFER OURSELVES TO OUR LORD

Offertory: Congregation (sings): Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit

within me. Cast me not away from Your presence; and take not

Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of Your sal-

vation; and uphold me with Your free Spirit. Amen.

Hymn: “He Leadeth Me” (Accompanied by added musicians)

1. He leadeth me, O blessed thought!

O words with heav’nly comfort fraught!

Whate’er I do, where’er I be

Still ’tis God’s hand that leadeth me.

Refrain:

He leadeth me, He leadeth me,

By His own hand He leadeth me;

His faithful foll’wer I would be,

For by His hand He leadeth me.

2. Sometimes ’mid scenes of deepest gloom,

Sometimes where Eden’s bowers bloom,

By waters calm, o’er troubled sea,

Still ’tis God’s hand that leadeth me. Refrain

3. Lord, I would place my hand in Thine,

Nor ever murmur nor repine;

Content, whatever lot I see,

Since ’tis my God that leadeth me. Refrain

4. And when my task on earth is done,

When by Thy grace the vict’ry’s won,

E’en death’s cold wave I will not flee,

Since God through Jordan leadeth me. Refrain

Offering of Thankful Hearts

OUR LORD BLESSES US!

USHERS NEEDED: We need ushers to have our church services run smoothly. Ushers help by greeting people, handing our bulletins, helping people who are not familiar with our church, taking the collection of the of-ferings, counting attendance and picking up things left in the church. Ush-ers are assigned to teams; the teams are responsible for one Sunday of the month (first week, second week, etc.) We need men to do this service for our congregation. Can you help do this? Contact David Lueck, dea-con in charge of ushering, by phone at 995-0772, by email at [email protected] or by talking to me at church.

CHURCH ATTENDANCE

Statistics reveal that both church atten-dance and church membership grow most rapidly and consistently through person

to person contact. Most people attend church and most new members are gained for the church when a church’s members first invite them to come.

This is nothing new. When Jesus was gathering His disciples, An-drew went and found his brother Peter. We are told: “He brought him to Jesus” (Jn. 1:42). Philip went and found his friend Nathan-ael and told him about “Jesus of Nazareth.” When Nathanael

questioned Philip regarding what possible good could come out of Nazareth, Philip responded: “Come and see” (Jn. 1:46b). Both men were impressed by what they heard and saw. Both men were led to commit themselves to Jesus as disciples.

This week is “Holy Week.” We will celebrate our Savior’s victory over death in six special services: two on Maundy Thursday—1:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.; two on Good Friday—1:00 p.m. and 7:00

p.m.; and two on Easter Sunday—7:00 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. In ad-dition, we will enjoy an Easter Sunday breakfast together from 8:00 a.m. to 9:15 a.m.

It is a perfect time to invite a relative or friend, a business ac-

quaintance or neighbor to come to church and hear the good news about Jesus. Jesus, after all, died to pay for the sins of the whole world. Jesus then arose from the dead and thereby defeated death and Satan for us all. If we all invited just one other person

and that person came, our sanctuary would be filled to overflow-ing. God’s name would be honored, and many souls would be blessed by what they would hear and see! May God move us to share that with which we have been so richly blessed!
