Calling all seamstresses! An urgent call has been made for handmade cloth face masks for our healthcare workers! These are easy to make with very little skill needed. You can make them from cotton fabrics that you al-ready have or you can purchase new fabric. JoAnn Fabric also has free fabric packets avail-able at the front of the store. Cute patterns are appreciated and don't forget some for male nurses! Elastic is not available and cord elastic is diffi-cult to work with. Look below for a picture of the headwraps we are using instead. They are the perfect size and much easier to work with.

We will be collecting the masks on Fridays between 10 AM-2 PM outside the church office. Look for a labelled bin on the bench by the church office door. We will also have a bin of fabric you can take if you need it next Fri-day. The masks you drop off will be picked up by Amy Smith and distributed to our healthcare workers. If you're taking on this challenge to make masks contact Kathy Carr at 727-781-8195 or [email protected].

WHAT YOU WILL NEED • Cotton fabric, a pretty print is best.

• If you already have rope elastic you can use this to make the masks by cutting it 7 inches long and knotting the ends. Elastic is sold out in most stores so we're recommending that you use headwraps like the ones pictured at left as an alternative. Cut the headwrap so it’s one piece of elastic and don't knot the ends.

HOW TO SEW THE MASK 1. You can make two sizes: Adult or Child. Put right sides of cotton fabric together. Cut 9x6 (Adult) or 7.5x5 (Child). Be sure any fabric de-sign is placed horizontally.

2. Starting at the center of the bottom edge, sew to the first corner, stop. Sew the wrap (or elastic) with the edge out into the corner. A few stitches forward and back will hold this.

3. Sew to the next corner, stop, and bring the other end of the wrap (or elastic) to the corner and sew a few stitches forward and back.

4. Now sew across that top of the mask to the next corner. Again put a wrap/elastic with the edge out.

5. Sew to the next corner and sew in the oth-er end of the same wrap.

6. Sew across the bottom leaving about 1.5” to 2” open. Stop, cut the thread. Turn inside out.

7. Pin 3 tucks on each side of the mask. Make sure the tucks are the same direction.

8. Sew around the edge of the mask twice. See picture below for what finished mask should look like.
