Page 1 WEEK 9 March 7-11, 2018 Finishing on a final score of zero, the team from Great Britain consisting of Amanda Derbyshire, Ben Maher, Emily Mason, Emily Moffitt, and Chef d’Equipe Di Lampard won the $150,000 Nations Cup CSIO4*, presented by U.S. Trust & Bank of America Merrill Lynch on Saturday, March 3, during week eight of the 2018 Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF). Saturday’s Nations Cup consisted of two rounds shown over a course set by Ken Krome (USA). Teams of four represented the nations of Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Great Britain, Ireland, Mexico, United States, and Venezuela. After the first round, each team dropped their highest score. In the second round, the top six teams returned in order of highest to lowest total faults. The winner was determined by the lowest total of each team’s top three riders from each round. The six teams that returned for the second round in order from most faults to least were Chile, Venezuela, Ireland, Brazil, Mexico, and Great Britain. The winning nation was represented by Derbyshire on Luibanta BH, owned by Gochman Sport Horses LLC, Maher on Jane Forbes Clark’s Tic Tac, Mason riding Explosion W for Poden Farms, and Moffitt on another Poden Farms-owned mount, Hilfiger van de Olmenhoeve. Great Britain led in the first round with a zero fault total after Derbyshire, Mason, and Maher went clear. Moffitt was the drop score with 13 faults. In round two, Moffitt came back strong with a clear round, and Mason and Maher also contributed clears. Derbyshire was the drop score with eight faults. It all came down to anchor rider Maher, the 2012 London Olympic Games team gold medalist, to produce the win for Great Britain, as Ireland was waiting with five total faults after three clear trips in the second round. Maher delivered on Tic Tac, a 15-year- old Belgian Sport Horse by Clinton x Panama du Seigneur, showing in its first time with Maher at the Winter Equestrian Festival. It was a satisfying return to the top of the podium for the rider. “We had a long talk before the weekend that we needed Great Britain to get off to a good start,” he said. “We’ve been losing for too long and I think that for any rider or any team, you can’t just go on a run of bad luck or bad results and all of a sudden come out and win a championship, so I think this year we have to start strong as a country, as a team, within the riders that we have and get off to a positive start. Now we can take this result back to Europe with us for the Super League division and look forward to Tryon for the Olympic qualification. “We have a younger generation now,” continued the 35-year-old rider. “Everyone’s ridden one or two Nations’ Cups and last week I was told this is my 50th, so I feel really old now. I think we need to make Di’s job a little easier. Everyone always complains back home that we need to produce more results and Di should do this and Di should do Closing out the CSIO4* week of competition on Sunday, March 4, at the 2018 Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) was the $205,000 CSIO4* Grand Prix, presented by Lugano Diamonds, with a win for Olympic gold medalist Beezie Madden and Breitling LS, owned by Abigail Wexner, at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center in Wellington, FL. Out of 45 entries in the grand prix and 11 who advanced to the jump-off, it was fan favorite Madden who rose to the top of the $205,000 CSIO4* Grand Prix, presented by Lugano Diamonds. Madden rode Breitling LS, a 12-year-old Dutch Warmblood stallion by Quintero x Accord II, in a brilliant jump-off ride to win with a time of 40.49 seconds. “I had Richie and Denis behind me, so I needed to go as fast as I was comfortable with him,” said Madden. “He’s actually become such a fun horse in the jump-offs because he has gotten quite fast. He’s careful, and I feel like every time that I’m in a jump- off, I have a really good chance. I put a nice slice on [fence] one. I think I was quite fast to fence two, fast to fence three. I slipped a little bit in that turn [to the double combination]. I thought maybe somebody could get me there. Then again the last turn was really good as well; I think I was pretty tight there.” Madden had originally planned to just focus on the Nations Cup with Breitling LS and ride her greener mount, Con Taggio, in Sunday’s grand prix. When the Nations Cup didn’t turn out as she hoped for and the U.S. team didn’t advance to the second round, Madden changed her mind on which horse she would ride in the grand prix. “I wasn’t really hoping for that scenario – for doing only one round,” said Madden of the Nations Cup. “It just wasn’t our night as a team. It actually worked out nicely for Adrienne and I in the end. He felt fantastic. It’s nice cool weather this week. He’s only scheduled to do one more week down here before the World Cup Finals, so I thought really he needed another class this week in order to build up his fitness for that.” Madden plans to bring out Breitling LS again during WEF 11 to compete on the grass derby field for a change of scenery for the horse she bills as one “kind of climbing up there” in her string of top horses. Second place went to Richie Moloney (IRL) and Carrabis Z, owned by Equinimity LLC, in a time of 43.16 seconds. They went last in the jump- off and Moloney had seen Madden’s round before him. Moloney said, “In the jump-off, I saw Beezie from one to two, and I knew that I couldn’t do that with him because he’s hard just to turn straightaway when he lands. He jumps far out the other side of the jumps. I kind of went as quick as I could without taking any risks, just leaving the jumps up. I’m very happy with second place.” “He’s 15 years of age, and he still feels great. He’s in great form,” said Moloney of his veteran Zangersheide stallion by Canabis Z x Grannusso. “I For the first time in the 17 year-history of the Nations Cup at WEF, Great Britain stood on the top of the podium. ©Sportfot Beezie Madden and Breitling captured the $205,000 CSIO4* Grand Prix, presented by Lugano Diamonds. ©Sportfot PALM BEACH INTERNATIONAL EQUESTRIAN CENTER WEEKLY WIRE EDITOR: JENNIFER WOOD WEEK 9 MARCH 7-11, 2018 Continued on Page 6 BEEZIE MADDEN AND BREITLING LS SHINE BRIGHTEST IN $205,000 CSIO4* GRAND PRIX, PRESENTED BY LUGANO DIAMONDS Please turn to page 15 GREAT BRITAIN DOUBLE CLEAR TO WIN $150,000 NATIONS CUP CSIO4*, PRESENTED BY U.S. TRUST & BANK OF AMERICA MERRILL LYNCH

that, but in the end the riders are accountable and we need to start producing in the ring like we did tonight.”

Mason, 26, who was riding for the first time ever in a Senior Nations Cup for Great Britain, was thrilled with her horse’s performance.

“Personally, for me it was an honor even to be picked for the team to start with and the fact that we managed to get a double clear out today is mind blowing really, but I’m so happy with the horse,” she said of the nine-year-old KWPN gelding by Chacco Blue x Baloubet du Rouet. “He’s inexperienced with this level and he jumped absolutely phenomenal tonight.”

Derbyshire, 29, who was riding in her second Nations Cup ever, has had a spectacular week with two individual CSIO victories with Lady Maria BH and now the Nations Cup win on Luibanta BH, a 10-year-old Irish Sport Horse mare by Luidam x Abantos.

“Last year was the first time I did a Nations Cup and it went well, but I was a little nervous,” said the U.S.-based rider. “This year I think we had a great, strong team and I think we were all pretty confident we could do a good job. I was delighted with the horse. She always tries her best. I made a little mistake in round two, but thankfully I had some other teammates who made up for it. I am delighted for everyone and for Great Britain.”

Nineteen-year-old Moffitt, riding in her third Nations Cup, was pleased with

her horse’s ability to rise to the occasion in the second round and help her team.

“The first round was not great; it did not go to plan and the second round I definitely had to take a deep breath and focus on what I needed to do. I rode as well as I could and ‘Tommy’ was definitely more with me the second round and he flew over the course. He really knows when he has to do his job,” she said of the 11-year-old Belgian Warmblood gelding by Dulf van den Bisschop x Querlybet Hero.

In a concentrated effort to bring a win back for Great Britain, said Chef d’Equipe Di Lampard, “It was all down to the last round, but it is fantastic that everything came together. Every rider put their corner in. They put in a great performance, they dug deep and the plan was, as Ben said, to come and get off to a good start so we were well-focused on this weekend.”

Ireland finished second with five faults after double clear rounds from Shane Sweetnam and Paul O’Shea, and a second round clear from Denis Lynch. Their three clear performances in round two led to anchor Cian O’Connor not having to return.

Third place went to Mexico on ten faults for team members Eugenio Garza, Mario Onate, Andres Azcarraga, and Nicolas Pizarro.

Rodrigo Lambre (BRA) and Mario Onate’s Chapilot were the only double clear round to win the $25,000 ProElite® Jumper Classic. Riding out of the second spot in the jump-off order, Lambre and Chapilot, an 11-year-old Hanoverian gelding by Chacco Blue x Pilot, set down a winning time in 39.424 seconds and were the only clear.

First into the jump-off were Karen Polle (JPN) and Kinoshita Group’s Sari, who were very quick in 38.801 seconds, but with four faults. Their time

would hold up for second place. Third went to Jose Roberto Reynoso (BRA), and Tanita de Galeste, owned by Franck Henouda, who had four faults in 39.132 seconds.

Highlighting the day’s competition on Thursday, March 1, during the eighth week of the 2018 Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF), Alex Granato (USA) and Carlchen W, owned by Page Tredennick, took the top spot in the $35,000 Equinimity WEF Challenge Cup Round 8. Granato and Carlchen W, a ten-year-old Mecklenberg gelding by Chacco-Blue x Continue, sped over the obstacles and stopped the timers in 65.03 seconds.

They finished just ahead of Olympic gold medalist Beezie Madden (USA) and Abigail Wexner’s Con Taggio, who finished in 65.81 seconds. Third place went to Richie Moloney (IRL) and Ypaja Yando, owned by Equinimity LLC, who had a time of 65.93 seconds.

Later in the day on Thursday, Cormac Hanley (IRL) riding his own Captain Caruso, was victorious in the $10,000 Hermès Under 25 Welcome. Second place went to Sydney Shulman (USA) and Villamoura, while Madison Goetzmann (USA) and Prestigious were third. Hanley was also awarded with the Champion Equine Insurance Jumper Style Award, presented by Laura Fetterman.

Also held on Friday morning was the $35,000 Douglas Elliman Real Estate 1.45m Classic with a win going to Great Britain and Amanda Derbyshire

riding Lady Maria BH, owned by Gochman Sport Horses LLC. They finished the speed course clear in a time of 66.97 seconds for the win.

Adrienne Sternlicht (USA) rode Starlight Farms LLC’s Toulago to second place with a time of 68.07 seconds. Third place went to Andres Azcarraga (MEX) on Jaime Azcarraga’s Luminoso LS, who was also clear in 68.11 seconds.

A new combination in the ring went to the winner’s circle in the $50,000 Hollow Creek Farm 1.50m National Grand Prix over 34 other competitors. Darragh Kenny (IRL) and Babalou 41, owned by Jack Snyder, were the only double clear in the class, winning on a time of 39.945 seconds.

Second place went to Rodrigo Lambre (BRA) and Mario Onate’s Chapilot, who had four faults in 38.513 seconds. Mario Deslauriers (CAN) and Bardolina 2, owned by Wishing Well Farm LLC, were third with four faults in 39.778 seconds.

Earlier on Saturday, Amanda Derbyshire (GBR) and Lady Maria BH, owned by Gochman Sport Horse LLC, took their second speed win of the week in the $10,000 Griffis Residential Speed Stake. Their fast time of 62.88 seconds gave them victory over Danielle Goldstein (ISR) and Celebrity VDL, owned by The Golden Group and Danielle Goldstein, (63.22 seconds) and Winn Alden on Southern Arches LLC’s Stealing Home, who had a time of 64.03 seconds.

FACES OF WEFMEGHAN KAUPP

CAN YOU WALK ME THROUGH YOUR RIDING CAREER AND HOW YOU ENDED UP AT WEF? I started riding when I was five years old and haven’t stopped since. I always knew I wanted to be a professional and am currently living out my dream. I did the hunters, jumpers, and equitation as a junior and rode with Bobby Braswell and Mary Babick. After that, I went to school in Boston and ended up starting my professional career at Holly Hill Farm, which is how I ended up at WEF. I am currently working for Donald Cheska at Bayside, and I am really enjoying getting back into the jumpers, even though I’ve always had a strong focus on the hunters.

DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR SOMEONE HOPING TO BARN MANAGE? WHAT IS YOUR TYPICAL DAY? Putting up a neat and well written board is key to keeping clients, grooms, riders, and trainers organized for the day. Getting it done at the end of each day for the next day helps keep everyone on the same page. I would also say that one of the most important things a barn manager can do is keep an organized feed room. Additionally, writing down all medications and keeping track of vet and farrier records is extremely important. I actually use Stable Secretary to keep all the records in my barn organized, which makes scheduling and billing very easy. I highly recommend it for any barn manager! As a rider, bringing an organized back pack to the ring is always a good idea. I always have extra everything; spurs,

hairnets, contacts, etc. just in case. In a nutshell, my typical day consists of riding six or seven horses, teaching a lesson here and there, and keeping

everyone on schedule. If I am showing I always try to plan with the grooms when I can get the horses ridden at home to make every day as efficient as possible for everyone. At the end of each week we set a new course to keep things fresh.

WHAT IS YOUR FONDEST MEMORY AT WEF?Winning the USHJA National Derby last year, along with the circuit championship in the performance hunters with Montenegro, owned by Lilly Ulrich. He is one of my favorite hunter horses that I’ve been lucky enough to ride during my professional career. I learned so much from him, and he is very special. He is actually 21 this year, but you would never guess it.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT BEING HERE? Getting to ride with, and against, the top professionals and horses in the country. The competition is exciting for me. The wealth of knowledge here is incredible. The best vets, riders, trainers, and farriers in the world are all here in one place, and there is so much to learn from all of them.

WHEN YOU ARE NOT RIDING, WHAT CAN WE FIND YOU DOING? HOBBIES?I’m always riding! Last year I started doing pilates and I love it! I also really like spin. On Mondays, I just try to get caught up with everything and organized for the upcoming week. Every once in a while, I love to go to the beach, and I also really love to travel. Before I became a professional, I was lucky enough to see all seven continents!

think probably [the grand prix] during the day helps. He’s quite a hot horse and with the lights, I think he gets a little bit excited. So it was nice today. He was relaxed. He felt even better for the jump-off than the first round. I’m very happy with him.”

Adrienne Sternlicht (USA) and Cristalline, riding out of the unenviable first position in the class, rode a solid clear round in 43.86 seconds for third place. Fourth place went to the only other double clear, Lisa Carlsen (CAN) and her own Parette.

“I actually only found out that I got into the grand prix at like 9:45 this morning,” said Sternlicht. “I was very excited when I got into the grand prix. That definitely fueled my ambition a little bit further. I was quite relaxed. I’m normally quite tense before these classes. I just tried to help my horse out where I could…just ride the track and trust her.”

Sternlicht and Cristalline recorded a clear round in Saturday’s Nations Cup as well, and their partnership is solidifying, also thanks to the time that Sternlicht spends with the Bavarian Warmblood mare by Cristallo 1 x Caretello B in the barn.

“We have a really special relationship,” said Sternlicht. “I spend a lot of time with her at home. I sort of indulge her, perhaps a little bit too much sometimes [my trainer] McLain [Ward] says. Every time I hand walk her on grass, she rolls. She lies down and has a good chunk of grass in her mouth. I just really enjoy being around her every day, and I feel really privileged to have her in my life.”

Lillie Keenan (USA) was presented with the Kate Nash Boone Style Award, presented by Michael Meller, friends, and family, given to the international equestrian who exemplifies best style of riding along with maintaining a sportsmanlike composure while competing in the CSIO at WEF. The Niall Grimes “Cheers” Perpetual Trophy was presented to Richie Moloney, which is presented each year to the top Irish rider during CSIO week.

To kick off week eight at the Winter Equestrian Festival, Peter Pletcher rode Kennedy, owned by Blanche Strunk, to the Conformation Hunter championship. The duo was fourth in the model, fourth in the under saddle, and first, first, first, and second over fences. “He has gotten better and better each week,” said Pletcher of the seven-year-old Holsteiner gelding. “It has been such a good circuit for us!”

Victoria Colvin was close behind aboard Grand Affair, owned by Huckleberry Farm, and captured the reserve championship win with a third in the model, a first in the under saddle, and

second, third, fourth, and fourth over fences.

Thursday additionally featured a double championship win for Scott Stewart in the Green Hunter 3’ and Green Hunter 3’3” divisions. Stewart was crowned champion at the lower height aboard Paraduxx, owned by Laurie Stevens, with a first in the under saddle and four first-place finishes over fences. Christopher Payne took home reserve honors aboard Maison, owned by Signorino Family Farm LLC, with a second in the under saddle and a second, third, and fifth over fences.

Twenty-four-year-old Lacey Gilbertson (USA) claimed a victory in the $35,000 Hermès Under 25 Semi-Final Grand Prix riding Baloppi under the lights in the International Arena on Friday, March 2, during week eight of the 2018 Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF).

In Friday night’s class, 47 starters jumped the first-round track set by Ken Krome (USA) with seven pairs advancing to the jump-off. The top three finishers all posted fault-free rounds, making foot speed the deciding factor for the final placings. Gilbertson and Baloppi, an 11-year-old Danish Warmblood mare owned by Seabrook LLC, crossed the timers in a blistering 40.21 seconds for the win.

Second-place finisher, Ailish Cuniffe (USA) returned first in the jump-off to lay down an early pace in 41.70 seconds aboard Baloucento 2, a 13-year-old Oldenburg mare (Baloubet du Rouet x Cento) owned by Whipstick Farm, Ltd. Third place went to Ransome Rombauer (USA) and her own Emorkus RE, a nine-year-old KWPN gelding (Quasimodo van de Molendreef x Haarlem).

With the semi-final win, Gilbertson held on to her spot at the top of the

Hermès Under 25 rankings at WEF after success in the division this season at WEF.

“I’ve been doing [the Under 25] for a few years, but I didn’t start doing the jumpers until I was about 18, so I started a little bit late,” said Gilbertson. “I didn’t jump bigger than 3’6” until then. So, even though I’ve done it for a few years, I still feel like this is the first year that I’ve actually been able to be competitive. It’s nice to be able to do stuff like this; go under the lights and jump across the street, and not have to show against the best in the world every time.”

Gilbertson returned sixth over the short course and praised Baloppi’s speed, saying, “I actually missed one of the inside turns, but luckily she’s really quick across the ground, so she covered it okay. Ailish is super fast, so I knew I was going to have to run her a bit if I wanted to win. Luckily, I was barely faster.

“She’s the most magnificent animal I think in the entire world,” continued Gilbertson of Baloppi. “She’s incredibly brave, very fast, careful. She has a lot of heart. She’s just amazing.”

Gilbertson bumped Cunniffe, a 20-year-old sophomore at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX, to runner-up by just over one second.

“Going into the jump-off, my plan was to put pressure on because you don’t always know how fast everyone else will go, so you basically just have to go as neat and as fast as you can without making any mistakes,” said Cunniffe, who has been competing in the Under 25 division for three years. “It’s a great division for up-and-coming riders. You get to show in all different arenas and all different formats which I think is helpful for us to know things like Nations’ Cup format and riding the open water.”

In third, Rombauer, who also attends Southern Methodist University as a freshman, made her debut in Under 25 competition with a new mount on Friday, saying, “I got Emorkus at Spruce Meadows from Eric Lamaze. Spencer Smith helped me find him, and this was both of our first time under the lights. He was amazing. I couldn’t have asked for him to be better. I was nervous going in, but he really helped me fight and held my hand throughout the course.”

The Hermès Under 25 Grand Prix Series concludes with the top 30 riders in the point standings advancing to the $50,0000 Grand Prix Final, which will take place on the grass derby field of Equestrian Village during Week 11 of WEF on Sunday, March 25.
