afgerammelde akademie. In so ’n kraaines word die omstrede B-woord ’n volwaardige vloekwoord. B-A-L-A-N-S. Hoe gereeld hoor ons nie dat dit die wonderkuur vir al jou kwale is nie?

“Probeer net om die balans te handhaaf en alles sal in plek val...” “Prioritiseer, maar probeer om nogsteeds ’n gesonde balans te behou...” “Gebalanseerde mense is gelukkige mense...”

Die algemene uitgangspunt is dat iemand wat aan duisende uiteenlopende aktiwiteite deelneem gebalanseerd moet wees. Hierdie mense word gerespekteer vir hulle jongleer-vaardighede en uitsonderlike lewenskennis. Hulle word gesien as suksesvol...

Om die balans te handhaaf, word hierdie uitgawe van die Pallas verdeel in die kenmerke van ons gunsteling godin nl: wysheid, skoonheid en kunste. Die wonderlike ding van hierdie “kategorieë” is dat dit nie daar is om iemand te kategoriseer nie.

Jy kan jouself in elkeen plaas en met elke artikel identifiseer en op al die foto’s verskyn, jy kan net aanklank vind by een afdeling of een artikel of jy kan net na al die foto’s kyk en verder “series” kyk.

Die feit dat ’n mens nie oral betrokke is nie maak nie van jou ongebalanseerd nie en dit maak jou verseker nie onsuksesvol nie. Ongeag jou voorkeur hoop ons dat jy hierdie stukkie warboel terdeë sal geniet.

Geniet die sukses wat wanbalans tewee bring! “Die lewe is te kort vir copy en paste” so maak maar ’n paar onverantwoordelike besluite.

“2014 means a brand new start – new faces, roommates, subjects, lecturers and café across the road. What better way to

celebrate these new beginnings than to document them all (and more) in our first Pallas of 2014? I will be honest: compiling the very first Pallas

for our term as editors was definitely a very new experience (and challenge!). The multitude and diversity of Minerva’s events, stories and accomplishments makes creating a publication that speaks to – and can be enjoyed by – all our Minerva readers quite a daunting responsibility. We looked to the heart of our house for inspiration – Minerva Athena helped us with the task at hand. This issue is thus structured around the three core values of Minerva: Wisdom, Beauty and Arts. I hope that you will find something to relate to in either- or every one of these categories.With the craziness of MAD2 parties and early

assessment behind us, we now stare the short and not always so sweet second term squarely in the face. It is easy to feel overwhelmed by the prospect of all that must be done in this short period of time (as I am writing this letter, I am also thinking about my English test, Practical assignment and huisfondsdans outfit that is still to be conceptualised and made). My mom, who has grown used to my “too-much-to-do” panics, always advises me to take it one task/event at a time and to take time to breathe! So, in-between the dances, dates, tests and exam-prep, take some time to sit on one of the balconies with a cup of tea! It’s important to take some time, be still, breathe and read the Pallas!I really hope you enjoy the Wisdom, Beauty and Arts issue. May this new term be filled with adventures and exciting stories to write about next time!

M inerva Week is the week dedicated to celebrating our magnificent residence. This week was packed full of activities that

showed the entire campus how proud we are to be Minervaners.

The Toga Run tested our coordination as we tried to hold up our togas while sprinting down Victoria Street. Toga Day had all Minervaners united as we all dressed in our white sheets while facing the bizarre questions of classmates.

Toga Day also included lunch on the Rooi Plein, which gave us the chance to enjoy a meal together in the shades on the lawn. The Amazing Race ensured that no First Years were going to get first year syndrome, as we ran a marathon around campus, taking photos at every landmark. Some of these landmarks proved more dangerous than others; and resulted in some girls being showered.

Tour de Olympus was a showcase of the cullinary skills of every section – and by culinary skills I mean the ability of a section to serve popcorn and drinks. Nonetheless, the night was incredibly fun, as we had the opportunity to see every section’s theme and how they had decorated their part of the res.

All in all, everyone had immense fun showing their pride in Minerva and celebrating what we mean by: Alles vir die Huis.

5 tips for Minerva Week:1. Buy a lot of safety pins and get a friend to help put

on your toga. Unless you are a National Gymnast, there is almost no way you can attach a toga alone.

2. Do NOT underestimate the Amazing Race. Takkies and stretching are mandatory for this event.

3. Be sure to visit all the stalls in Tour de Olympus early: free food in res disappears faster than chicken schnitzels on Wednesdays.

4. Walk with your roommate on Roomie Day. It makes questions about your dorky outfit easier to answer.

5. Don’t sprint the first 200 metres of the Toga Run. Victoria Street is longer than you think.

Die HK van Dagbreek manskoshuis, ons MAD²-maatjies, is onder kruisverhoor gesit toe hulle ’n paar vrae vir ons beantwoord het. Ons wou hulle beter leer ken, maar het besluit om nie die gewone “Waar kom jy vandaan?”-vrae te vra nie. Die manne se antwoorde het beslis baie vermaak verskaf.

The slogan of Minerva and Dagreek for MAD² 2014 was MAD4More: Minerva and Dagbreek, Making a Decision to Make a Difference, while Making a Documentary. And what a difference did the welcoming period make! The welcoming period was the time all the First Years have been looking forward to since high school, but not one of us could have anticipated what was to come. It was quite possibly the busiest, funniest, craziest 10 days any university student would ever experience. From fighting Pieke men for Nesta, to the biggest slumber party ever, to Vensters; the First Years were introduced to what varsity life is all about. >

Bondelsport: Bondelsport is one of

Minerva’s most paramount events of the year - a competition primarily based on gees (something this group of First Years were not lacking). The theme was sailors, and the Second Years did not fall short with all the effort put into the decorations and outfits of the First Years. One potential Minervaner saw the res at Bondesport, and heard our screams, and was quoted as saying: “Oh my word, I have to be in that res!”. Although we lost to Metanoia by one point, this did not take away from the pride that the girls felt for the res. It was a day that we got to parade to the rest of campus, how proud we are of our new home.

Although we all had permanent sweat stains from our visors, and constant sunburn, and none of us will ever listen to Crazy Frog again, everyone concluded that it had been the most memorable 10 days of their lives. Everyone has different

highlights and experiences from the welcoming period, but I think it can be agreed that no other experience could have bonded us more as sisters. Our first night was spent sitting in the Thomsaal, surrounded by unknown faces. Fast forward a week later, and we had built friendships that we will keep for years to come.

Skakels:When students think of a

skakel, they picture young men and women socialising in a casual environment. When a Minerva First Year thinks of a skakel, they hear the all too familiar phrase: “Ladies please put away all your valuables”. From being showered with hose pipes in Majuba’s quad, to engaging in watermelon combat with Helderberg, skakels were a definite highlight for all the girls. One in particular stands out - a skakel that qualifies as the Scariest Moment of Welcoming: When Jeannique told us that

Dagbreek had stolen our flag, and it was our job as First Years to get it back… We were

ready for war. This hyped-up group of Minervianers marched with fearless passion to claim back what was ours. This adrenaline soon wore off when we found ourselves cowering on the floor of Dagbreek’s hall, listening to the aggressive shouts coming from Dagbreek boys who were also ready for a war. We waited for this angry mob to turn around and find us whimpering on the floor, with the only outcome involving Minervianers in cold showers. By some miracle however, the lights turned on, and the familiar sound of sokkie music filled the room. The boys turned around and found us and instead of spending it in the shower, we danced the night away. M

Ek sou kon doen met ’n miljoen deur Veronica van HeerdenEen van ons Minervianers, Ninien Breytenbach, is ongelukkig nie ’n miljoen rand ryker nie, maar het wel onlangs ʼn geldprys in die sak gesteek na een van die Varsity Cup Rugbywedstryde (onder). Sy het met ʼn groot glimlag met my gedeel hoe sy dit reg gekry het en die vraag op almal se lippe, “wat gaan jy daarmee doen?” beantwoord.Wat moes jy doen om die geld te wen?Ek moes snaaks aantrek, op ’n manier gekies word om aan die kompetisie deel te neem en daarna ’n RUGBYBAL in ’n afgebakende area skop wat 50m ver van my af was, sonder enige oefenkanse.Hoeveel geld het jy gewen?TIEN flippen DUISEND RAND!Waar en hoe is jy gekies om die speletjies, wat jou toe op die ou end R10 000 ryker gemaak het, te speel?Ek en my kamermaat, Carike Smith, het mal aangetrek en rondgehardloop op die open seats van die Danie Craven Stadion. Ons het besef ons gaan nie gekies word as ons nie by die hoofpawiljoen sit nie. Ons het soontoe gemission en by die hek ingekom deur te sê ons is die span se ’mascots’. Na ’n lang gesukkel om die dirigent se aandag te kry het ek net besluit om oor te spring toe die fluitjie vir halftyd blaas. Toe ek omkyk was Carike kort op my hakke en ons albei het deelgeneem.

Hoe het jy gevoel toe jy die geld wen?Daar is nie woorde om te beskryf hoe mens op daardie oomblik voel nie. Die adrenalien skop dadelik in en mens wil net rondhardloop. Ek wou huil, lag, gil en poep gelyk.Wat gaan jy met die geld maak?Ek gaan Julie-maand saam met die Universiteitskoor oorsee. Met ander woorde, my sakgeld vir die toer is gesort! Wat ’n blessing.Hoe het ander mense reageer?Almal is verskriklik opgewonde vir my en vra nou nog vir

my hoe ek voel. Daar is natuurlik die paar sarkastiese jaloersbokkies, maar ek is geseënd met great mense wat net die beste vir my wil hê! My pa het my eers nie geglo nie en meeste van my familielede en naaste vriende was histeries. Snaaksste dag van my lewe.Watter emosies ervaar jy noudat dit als ingesink het?Hierdie hele ervaring was vir my regtig ’n wonderwerk. ’n Absolute blessing van God. En ’n spesiale dank aan Carike wat als saam met my deurgegaan het en net die beste vir my gun. Baie liefde vir haar en Jonel!

These were the words of a registered voter when

asked about the upcoming national and provincial elections. The national and provincial elections will take place on May 7, 2014 and just like the rest of the country, Stellenbosch and inevitably the students of Stellenbosch University, have been subjected to campaigning methods from both the DA and ANC political parties.

There were two opportunities (one in 2013 and one this year) to register as a voter - young people were encouraged to take this step. We were told that it is important to know that we have a voice. Gracia Nicholls, a second year Political Science student and Minerva resident, had to say about the approaching election: “Obviously the ANC will win the election but it is important that the opposition grows stronger.” The last half of this remark echoes what Helen Zille, DA leader, said when she

campaigning for the votes of SU students in the Wilcocks building of Stellenbosch. She said that to obtain a truly democratic society, one party cannot govern for 20 consecutive years. It is thus crucial for a strong opposition party to exist. According to

Zille, this will be the first time in our democratic history that the ANC actually runs opposed and the power structure is starting to shift. She arrived late to the meeting and, after apologising, spent the next 20 minutes explaining to voters why they should vote for the DA. It was mostly a basic run-through of what the DA stands

for and why they are the best party to vote for. Unlike the debate between Adricus van der Westhuizen and Francois Beukman, no critical issues were discussed.

The “clash of the titans”, as advertised by SPOSSA (Stellenbosch Political Science Student Association), took place on Wednesday, 19 March in the Wilcocks building and featured Van der Westhuizen from the DA and Beukman from the ANC ‘battling it out’ for the votes of the students. The building was not packed, but there was a fair amount of students. A notable amount of older party members from the ANC attended and they frequently disrupted proceedings. Critical issues such as crime, education strategies, corruption, Nkandla, and BEE were discussed. The audience was allowed to ask questions and voters’ personal emotions toward each party were clear in these questions. A fellow voter at these proceedings described it as,

A movie about a slave won Best Movie, and someone

named Cate won best actress. This year, no one really knew – or cared – about the results of the Oscar’s. Everyone was too preoccupied with the shock that Leonardo DiCaprio did not win the award for Best Actor! This revelation shocked

everyone that has watched The Wolf of Wall Street. A fantastic portrayal of the life of corrupt stock broker, Jordan Belfort, who builds an economic empire from a warehouse. The movie has an

incredible story line, with immaculate cinematography and directing. However, the main reason the

movie had such an impact was the acting of Leonardo DiCaprio. He completely dominated the movie with his ability to take on a character made up of so many different extremes and capturing his personality through his voice alone. The amount of effort put into this role is commendable. This begs to question:

how on earth did Matthew McConaughey win? The answer can be presumed that the movies deemed by audiences as “cool” (such as The Wolf of Wall Street) are not deemed worthy of an Oscar by the academy. Gabi Stela is one Minervianer

that has vowed to boycott the Oscar’s, until the academy sees change; “The Academy’s reluctance to award DiCaprio is a clear indication that the Oscar’s themselves have lost sight of what artistry is. It isn’t about 5 seconds of talent so many young actors display before they wither away into obscurity. Its sole focus is the continuous production of work that is relevant, dynamic, electrifying and consistent. DiCaprio has continued to beguile audiences for as long as he’s graced the silver screen, which must be coming up to more

than 20 years now. It is a gross affront to his talent and skill that he does has not recieved an Oscar. Perhaps he doesn’t need that kind of material validation, but the people who’ve watched him go from Arnie to Jack to Romeo to Gatsby and now his latest character, Jordan Belfort (below), certainly do – even if it’s just to make up for the years of emotional damage.”

Valentine’s Day is associated with red roses, chocolates, cute cards,

grand romantic gestures and all around love. For the para-lympian, Oscar Pistorius, the Valentine’s Day of 2013 had a different turn out.During the early hours of the

morning he shot his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp in his Pretoria home, killing her. Pistorius con-tends that he mistook her for an intruder and was merely trying to protect himself and Steenkamp. The prosecution, however, dis-agrees as he has been charged with first degree premeditated murder. Our law defines mur-der as the intentional unlawful killing of another human being. The defence of Pistorius is that, in shooting at what he believed to be an intruder, he mistakenly believed he was acting in self-defence, which would exclude unlawfulness that is an element of criminal liability.The opening statement of pros-

ecutor, Gerrie Nel noted that the case against Pistorius is based largely on circumstantial evi-dence, as there were no eyewit-nesses to the incident. Pistorius pleaded not guilty to all the charg-

es. Pistorius admits to shooting and killing Steenkamp, but de-nies the charge of intentional, premeditated murder. In order to be acquitted, Pistorius simply needs to raise a reasonable doubt in his favour. If this happens, the court will then need to consider whether his mistake was reason-able. If the court concludes that his mistake was not reasonable, he will be convicted of culpable homicide, seeing as all other ele-ments will be assumed.The Trial: HighlightsOn the 3rd of March the world’s

eyes turned to the Pretoria High Court for the start of what may be called the trial of the century. Pistorius is also facing a charge of illegal possession of ammuni-tion and two charges of firing a gun in a public space.Thus far we have heard wit-

nesses testifying: to hearing sounds of arguing, a woman’s screams and gunshots; to finding Pistorius praying over the body of Steenkamp when he went to help on that fateful night; old girl-friends and security guards have testified; to the improbability of Pistorius having been wearing his prosthetics during the shoot-ing. We have seen evidence indi-

cating the nature of Steenkamp’s injuries; cellphone evidence as pertaining to the nature of the lovers’ relationship; evidence from the scene e.g. the battered bathroom door etc.The defence, led by barrister

Barry Roux, has been aggressive during the cross examination of all witnesses. A clearly distraught Pistorius has been emotional throughout the trial, which begs the question of his authenticity. He has even vomited multiple times as pathological evidence was delivered with regards to the nature of Steenkamp’s injuries.Despite all the legalities, vari-

ous opinions and emotions sur-rounding this highly controversial case, one must keep in mind that a young girl has died. Whether the court finds that Pistorius in-tended to kill her or truly made a mistake that morning, will be what determines his fate.

sjokolade fontein en Johnny wat jou aarbeie voer. Mnr Depp was nêrens te bespeur nie, net ’n handjievol kreatiewe mense het volgens tema aangetrek (naughty 40’s) en (on)gelukkig was feminisme en oorlog ewe werklik maar dit was ’n lieflike aand met goeie vriende en ...eerlike wyn. Die program het ’n aantal diverse items

opgelewer. Eerstens is ons oordromme geseën deur Minerva supersterre en collaborations wat in ’n goeie episode van Glee tuishoort. Later het ons almal verlief geraak op die manne met die goue stemme en die goue kitare. Laastens was die mite-

geïnspireerde (In Dagbreek – julle weet mos – is amper alles ’n mite) seksie-inlywing effens belaglik maar vermaaklik. ’n Teerpuntjie was die klanksisteem.

Aangesien die kultuuraand in die buitelug was, was dit belangrik om ’n betroubare sisteem te hê sodat die items tot hulle reg kan kom. ’n Dowwe mikrofoon en ’n kitaar-amp wat sporadies werk het ’n effense uitdaging vir sommige deelnemers gebied. Soos met elke goeie kultuuraand was

daar ook hartseer oomblikke... The excitement, the suspense, the gorgeous outfits and of course the beautiful contestants, these were the elements that made the Ms. and Mr. Eendrag event a huge hit. Hosted at the Eendrag residence, this event took place on 5 March and what an event it was! With several Mirnerva ladies participating and an array of quirky rounds (not to mention the dashing gentlemen from Eendrag) the event promised to be nothing but entertaining. The contestants were nominated by their fellow housemates and on the evening they were whisked away for the competition. Chanté Moses , a first year and contestant, described the event as “Informal but well planned” and said that it was “fun taking part in house activities and meeting new people”. With all the competition the judges, who included the Minerva Prim Nesta Malan and HK Mia Schreuder, had a tough time deciding on a winner, but after much deliberation the lovely Ingrid Botha came out victorious. When asked about how she felt when winning, Ingrid laughed and said that she didn’t expect to win, but that she was really happy and that it was fun having all her friends there to support her. Ingrid’s

roommate, Hanri Ferreira, stated that she was extremely proud of Ingrid and jokingly said that she now also had a “claim to fame” with Ingrid as her roommate. Another title that had been awarded was the “Ms. Personality” award which went to Lisa-Jean Malan, a first year that also played the Miley Cyrus inspired “Selfie” character in Vensters. With a night like that to kick off the year, you can be sure that there will be many more to follow.

Celebrating our “Anties”Berco Day is an initiative by the leaders of Minerva in which we attempt to give back to the Berco staff for everything they mean to the ladies of Minerva. These 7 ladies frequently go above and beyond their duties, for example a girl in Section 11 speaks about one of the anties even straightening her bed covers when she did not make up her bed properly.

The main way in which Minerva gives back, is by presenting each lady with a food/goodie hamper. Each section was asked to bring a specific item (for example one section was asked to bring body spray) and this ensured that every lady was presented with a hamper that contained a variety of items, equally divided among the ladies. In the past it was noted that each lady did not get an equal share and Tatum Ferris, the House Committee member in charge of this portfolio, decided to change the collection-procedure, with great success.

The actual day took place on 13 March and on that day, each staff member was presented with the hamper. During lunch, they had tea and biscuits among the rest of the Minervianers. After an initial awkwardness, old school soul music started playing and the ladies really started to relax and enjoy themselves. When a Minervianer was asked what they thought of Berco Day her only response was: “Antie Pretoria het gedans!”

T he First Year’s Dance was the first formal event for the First Years and needless to

say, the res was not short of buzzing questions two weeks prior to the big event: “What are you wearing?” “Do these shoes match my dress?” “Who are you taking?” “WHO AM I GOING TO TAKE?!”

The First Year’s committee went to great lengths designing décor that transformed the dining hall into a slice of Morocco. Although the weather was unfavourable, this did not stop the First Years from sokkie-ing away with their dates and taking at least one thousand photos each in the photo booth.

A big thank you must be given to the hard work and dedication of the First Years’ Committee for planning and decorating the dance. Especially when they could only go to Tollies an hour after everyone else, so that the dining hall could be stripped of its Moroccan flair. A smashing way to start off the First Year’s social calendar, the dance really set the tone for an exciting year.

While taking part in a variety of boeresport activities, a blindfolded soccer game and a slip ’n’ slide, the ladies from Minerva and the men from Pieke had their first meeting with about 60 school pupils from the Legacy Center in Kayamandi.

Pupils and students were divided into teams whereafter they had to portray a creative war cry according to the values

of the Legacy Center. The center’s values include trustworthiness and good citizenship amongst others. After competing in the various fun-packed activities, lunch boxes could be enjoyed by both pupils and students before heading back to their different community homes.Now that the first step in overcoming the barrier between the communities of Kayamandi and Stellenbosch has been completed, it is time for both communities to invite each other to explore and interact with one another. In the second term, the committees of community interaction from both Minerva and Pieke will explore the society, culture and local businesses of Kayamandi. This interaction will take place in the form of a treasure hunt under the guidance of the Legacy pupils themselves. In term three, Minerva and Pieke will invite the Legacy pupils to Stellenbosch campus where they will get the chance to spend a shadow day with a student. The shadow day will consist of attending a class of their choice, exposure to the Neelsie and library as well as access to information about the requirements to obtain a scholarship.John Scully said: “The future belongs to those who see possibilities before they become obvious.” The community interaction committee values the importance of vision and dreams and the effect that it has, not only on the youth, but also on the general standard of living in South Africa. In collaboration with Pieke mens’ PSO, we are looking forward to continue building the bridge between the communities of Stellenbosch and Kayamandi.

On the morning of Saturday, 8 March, 120 excited ladies were chattering and sipping lemonade under the giant trees outside Katjiepiering restaurant.

Situated in Stellenbosch University’s botanical gardens, this venue was perfectly suited for the occasion. The Minerva ladies and their mothers, sisters, grandmothers and friends were all dressed in feminine florals and ready to spread the flower power, for this year, Damesdag was to have a very happy ending.

After one of our own Minervianers, Ingrid Botha, received a bone marrow transplant in 2013, the Damesdag committee, together with Ingrid, decided that it would be only fitting for this year’s event to be a fundraiser for The Sunflower Fund. CEO Tina Botha started The Sunflower Fund after losing her son, Craig, to leukaemia. The Sunflower Fund website (www.sunflowerfund.org.za) states their mission as follows: “The Sunflower Fund is a non-profit organisation based in Cape Town, South Africa, with a vision to give all South Africans diagnosed with leukaemia and other life-threatening blood disorders the chance of life, irrespective of their race and financial circumstances.” The fund is in association with the South African Bone Marrow Registry (SABMR), which is in critical need of more donors. By educating, recruiting and raising funds, The Sunflower Fund helps to build a larger and sustainable SABMR. The availability of a donor match is absolutely critical to the recovery process of a patient with life-threatening blood disease, which makes this fund

a very worthy cause to support.Funds were raised with ticket

sales, donations on the day and a Sunflower Fund table, selling merchandise (we’re all familiar with the colourful bandannas worn in support of the fund in October each year). Janine le Roux, a Sunflower Fund representative, and Ingrid both delivered short, but moving talks about the role of the fund and the process of becoming a bone marrow donor. In both their speeches, the women aimed to eradicate the stigmas surrounding bone marrow donation. There are no large needles, extreme pain or hospital theatres involved – simply a quick, painless process and the opportunity to save a life.

Breakfast served canapé style, beautiful natural surroundings and entertainment provided by our own prim, Nesta and her sister Rozanne as well as the (very handsome) Van der Merwe brothers made Damesdag 2014 a celebratory event. We celebrated the wonderful work of the Sunflower Fund, Ingrid’s bravery, the special women in our lives and, of course, the cute Van der Merwe brothers.

Die verhouding tussen ’n pa en ’n dogter is een van die mees unieke verhoudings

wat daar is. Dit was duidelik te sien by hierdie jaar se Pa en Dogter dag wat op 8 Maart by Eaglesvlei wynlandgoed net buite Stellenbosch gehou is. Dit was ’n lieflike sonskyn middag en die pa’s en dogters is verwelkom by ’n area met pragtig opgemaakte tafels met wyn en ’n stukkie droëwors vir elk. Meisies kry min die geleentheid om alleem-tyd saam met hul pa’s te spandeer- Ma of iemand anders is gewoonlik by. Die geleentheid het dus vir pa’s en hul dogters tyd gegee om te lag en om kwaliteit tyd saam te spandeer. Gasspreker, Salmon Vermaak, het die pa’s en

hul dogters kom toespreek. Hy het begin deur die grappie te maak dat as mense nie geweet het hierdie is ’n pa en dogter geleentheid nie, sou hulle seker gewonder het, “Wat maak al die pragtige jong dames saam met die ou toppies.” Salmon het vrylik en met gemak gepraat, omdat hy self ook ’n dogter het, het die toespraak uit ervaring ontstaan. Hy het die punt gemaak dat mens geneig is om net te dink hoe ’n situasie vir jou raak, maar veral ons meisies dink nie altyd daaraan hoe ’n situasie ons pa’s ook raak nie. Minervianer, Nicol Brand, het die invloed van die praatjie as volg beskryf : “Dit het my baie insig gegee en my en my pa se verhouding versterk.

Mens het nie altyd aan daai goed gedink nie, maar nou kan ons werk daaraan.”Na die toespraak, is die speletjie, “Hoe goed

ken julle mekaar”, gespeel waar 5 pa en dogter paartjies vrae oor mekaar moes antwoord. Danielle Cordy het dit beskryf as die lekkerste deel, “want al het ek my pa nie deelgeneem nie, het ons dit by die tafel gesit en doen. Dit was interessant om te sien hoe goed ek en my pa

mekaar ken.” Dit was groot pret en op die ou end het Mariechen Kotze en haar pa mekaar die beste geken. Mari Theron wat saam met haar pa deelgeneem het, het net besef hoe baie sy van haar pa weet. “Ek kon net nie glo dat hy nie my gunsteling series reg geraai het nie. Ons kyk dit dan saam, Castle. Behalwe vir dit was dit baie lekker en baie snaaks om te kon deelneem,” vertel Mari. Na die speletjies is die kos, ’n heerlike

kaasburger met skyfies en slaai, bedien. Die

dames voel dat hulle werklik waarde vir hulle geld gekry het en dat die pa’s se honger ook gestil is. Daar is aan tafel gekuier en dogters en hul pa’s het lekker saam gelag.As die dogters enige iets kon verander, sou

hulle meer met ander tafels en ander pa en dogters wou sosialiseer. Daar is nie regtig rondgeskuif nie en die pa’s aan tafel moes maar mekaar beter leer ken. Omdat die speletjies ook so lekker was het baie van die dames gehoop om nog meer speletjies te kon speel. Oor die algemeem is die geleentheid beskryf as uniek, spesiaal, stylvol gedoen en net ’n lekker kuier saam met hul pa’s. Dis altyd moeilik, omdat almal se pa’s nie naby

genoeg is om te kom nie, maar indien moontlik, is pa en dogter dag ’n geleentheid wat jy beslis nie wil misloop nie.

“Hy het die punt gemaak dat ’n mens geneig is om net te dink hoe ’n situasie vir jou

raak, maar veral ons meisies dink nie altyd daaraan hoe ’n situasie ons pa’s ook raak nie.”

“Dress like a lady” het die uitnodigingkaartjie gelees – en die Minerva seniors het absoluut gehoorsaam. Minerva-dames en hul metgeselle was so stylvol as kon kom op Saterdagaand, 21 Februarie. ‘n Warm somer-wind het gesorg dat wit en pers papier-flinders oral uit die voorgras-bome se takke warrel - ‘n paar dames moes ook ongelukkig vir hul rokkies keer in hierdie bries! Die tafels was pragtig gedek met blomme, helium balonne, ou boeke en kerse. Hier was ons nou in ‘n ouwêreldse towertuin en die geselskap was beslis reg vir ‘n tuinparty.

Jeannique Booyens en haar span het hul uitstekend van hul taak gekwyt. Die aand het seepglad en vol pret verloop. Jeannique meen die Seniordans is die “lekkerste event om te reël, want wat kan beter wees as om Minerva ‘n meer romantiese plek te maak?” Haar wenk vir volgende jaar? “Bestel minder wind! Die wind was al ding wat die aand bietjie moeilik gemaak het, maar Anje Truter het toe op die ou einde gesê dit het die perfekte atmosfeer geskep vir die ‘secret garden’.” Ons stem beslis saam met Anje.

Die res van die aand het per gewoonte verloop – die geliefde hoender schnitzel en aartappel skywe is bedien, baie foto’s geneem, gedans en wyn gedrink (ek het met ‘n glimlag gemerk hoe ‘n paar van die eerstejaarskelnerinne se ogies effens rek – hierdie is beslis nie soos ‘n enige hoërskool dans nie!) .

Terwyl ons “Simply the Best” uit volle bors sing en almal lag en dans en beeldskoon lyk, kan ek op daardie oomblik nie aan enige iets beter dink as om die jaar te begin, net daar, in die middel van Minerva se eetsaal, saam met al my gunsteling mense nie. Op 2014 – ’n betowerende jaar.

Dit het die gevolg dat Meerhof glad nie opdaag nie, dus wen Minerva (weer?).Met die “opwarmings seisoen” agter die rug beplan Minerva om in die volgende kwartaal vele nuwe tegnieke uit die sak te bring en die bal aan die rol te sit. Weerens is Minerva: meer as net ’n Matie.

If there is anyone who can get me excited about a hypermarket, it would have to be Mr Karl Lagerfeld.

The mastermind that is Chanel has done it again. Audiences at Paris fashion week, which took place from 25 February to 5 March, were absolutely stunned by the extravagance that was the Chanel Fall/Winter 2014 fashion show. Lagerfeld and his team completely transformed the Grand Palais into a Chanel hypermarket complete with double C branded pasta, eggs, tinned food, feather dusters and even gold bladed chainsaws! The looks that took the runway – models browsing the isles of this lavish Chanel store – were of a vast variety and seen as some of the most “democratic” work done by Lagerfeld since his start at Chanel in 1983. Most of the looks had a sporty appearance, which makes them perfect and easy to translate from catwalk to campus!

Die lewe van ’n VIP by die

US Woordfees

As joernaliste van Die Matie het ons toegang gehad tot al die funksies

waaroor ons wou skryf, asook die Vernaamde Interessante Persone se Lekke Slaap lokaal vir skoonheid, lekker kos en gesprekke met ander VIPs.

Dowwe Dolla Woordfees het vir my begin by Dowwe Dolla se vertoning – die eerste van ’n deurnag vertoningsfees by die Klein Libertas teater. As die jongste mense in die gehoor, is ons verbasend meegevoer deur haar reis deur Suid-Afrika se politiek, belastingprobleme en in-die-kol grappies oor SA se bekendes. Ons is egter net na twaalf daar weg – dit was rustyd voor die res van die naweek se aktiwiteite.

Matthew Mole het onlangs in my musiekhart ingekruip met sy treffer “Take yours, I’ll take mine”. Daarna het sy ander musiek net my obsessie vererger. So ja, natuurlik was ek by sy fantastiese optrede by Neethlingshof. Nadat ons agter die verhoog was vir introductions en foto’s, was dit tyd vir Jeremy Loops.

Jeremy Loops Die posters teen (en in) die bome langs Victoriastraat adverteer al vir lank hierdie karakter, maar met sy interessante naam het ek nog nooit regtig verder as Fruit Loops gedink nie. Dit was ’n groot fout. Hierdie man weet hoe musiek werk. Die “Loops”-deel van sy naam kom van die feit dat hy al sy liedjies op ’n loop laat gaan.

Hy record snitte (op die verhoog) van, onder andere, sy bekfluitjie, guitar, trom, sy stem of sy fluit. Die gehoor staan in afwagting terwyl hy ritmes opline. Wanneer hy tevrede is met al die ritmes en dit laat herhaal, begin hy sing. Gevolglik gaan die gehoor mal.

Elvis Blue & Wayne Cappelle Neethlingshof is die volgende aand ook gebruik vir die optredes van Elvis Blue en Wayne Cappelle. Elvis het al sy beste liedjies gesing en Wayne het sy Vlaamse(!) “liedjes” aan die gehoor bekendgestel. Dié line-up het gesorg vir die perfekte atmosfeer vir ’n piekniek. Die daaropvolgende week was belaglik vol van aktiwiteite, uitstallings en vertonings.

Die VIP Lekke Slaap lokaal Die skinder in die Die Matie kantoor was oor ’n VIP-kamer Stellenbosch: die ultimate kamer waar al die Vernaamde Interessante Persone uithang. Hier kon elke VIP (media of bekende) ’n ete boek, hul naels laat doen, wyn drink, onderhoude voer of net op die banke rus en wag vir iemand om vir hul ’n cappuccino aan te bied.Soos ons joernalis-instinkte dit wou hê, moes ons toets of hierdie gerug waar is. Daarom is ons Vrydagmiddag na dié lokaal toe. Ons is ontmoet deur ’n dame wat ons na ons sitplekke wys. Op pad daarheen stap ons verby Chris van Niekerk (“Francois” in 7de Laan). “Haal asem, Karin,” motiveer ek myself.Ons gaan skep vir ons kos en kies watter wyn ons voor lus is. Daar stap nog iemand deur die deur – Tobie Cronje (Foto hierbo). Ons Matie-mense kyk net na mekaar in absolute geluk. Een woord om my Woordfees-ervaring op te som: Sukses.

The theme of this year’s MAD², Instamoment:

Colour your World, enabled Minerva and Dagbreek to compile a successful Vensters production. The central theme of the production was that of two superheroes who bring colour back to the world. Mon and Ami (like the crayons Mon-Ami) have to rescue the world after colour has been sucked from it by all the slaves of modern social media. An underlaying theme was “making your life document-worthy”.

A production such as Vensters is not one that happens overnight and people such as Elsa Kleynhans, Thala Msutu and Shaen Maree were central to working out the whole storyline and creating a

suitable script. Shaen says that they met regularly and had many brainstorming sessions. Furthermore, there was many committees that grouped together to form the ultimate Vensters, such as a committee who choreographed the dance routines and another who made the décor and props.

The production is divided into segments where a group of Minervianers and Dagbrekers do a different dance in each segment. This year there were zombies, a techno group, “sexy girls”, the partner dance and the ultimate group dance.

Minerva’s first years describe the Dagbreek guys as “gentlemen” and say that “all first years were proud” and “it was a great way to mingle with our brother res”. M

Dik, stroperige en bittersoet lekkerny. Molasse is ’n gepaste vergelyking vir

Stellenbosch se jaarlikse Massasêr. Die kwartaal was skaars 2 weke oud toe die eerste paar hoopvolle mansstudente opdaag by die damesksohuise vir beoordeling. Geklee in uiteenlopende uitrustings (soms deftig en soms...danig) en met ’n goeie skeut sterk “tee” in, het die mans ons bekoor met hulle kreatiwiteit, humor en...stemme. Die Dinsdagaand was dit egter die dames se beurt om te spog met hulle talente by verskeie manskoshuise. Die tema van vanjaar se mollassasêr

was “soundtracks” met die voorgeskrewe liedjies Elastic Heart - Sia en We Own It – 2 Chainz ft Whiz Khalifa, onderskeidelik vir die dames en die mans. Die tema

is geinterpreteer as “The soundtrack of freedom” deur Minerva se uiters kreatiewe massasêr-komitee. Gracia Nicholls, een van die samestellers van die dialoog en liedjies beskryf hulle benadering as volg: “Ek en Mudzuli wou nie net snaaks wees nie en wou glad nie die eerstejaars embarrass het nie. Ons wou brilliant wees, ons wil ’n bietjie wys Minerva kan Massasêr ernstig opneem en brilliant wees.” Minerva se molassasêr-groep het

vanjaar uitstekend gevaar en die finaal gehaal. Dit is ’n uitsonderlike prestasie aangesien Minerva in die laaste 5 jaar nie verder as die uitdunrondtes gevorder het nie. Geluk aan die komitee en al ons

pragtige Massasêr-godinne.

It just feels to me that women cannot live a day without something sweet… After a long day of class or an intense study session I cannot help but

feel that I deserve something sweet and then I always indulge in some dark chocolate or a spoon (or five) of peanut butter. Therefore I decided to put in two lekker-lekker (because there are no English words to describe it) recipes for you to try out. I felt both of these recipes are “residence-friendly”, meaning that they require no oven or even microwave – only a kettle, fridge and perhaps a hot plate.

thing about a sandwich is that you can make it healthier by using rye or whole-wheat bread or alternatively you can use white bread for the less healthy option.

Something Sweet Chocolate-caramel Tart (8 – 10 portions)

• 200 g Marie-biscuits• 100 g butter, melted• 10 ml caramel flavouringFor the filling• 1 x 360 g-tin caramel-

condensed milk (Treat)• 200 g dark chocolate,

roughly chopped• 180 ml cream• 40 g butter

Instructions:1. Ground the biscuits in a

food processer or with your perfectly capable hands (tip: keep the biscuits in its plastic covering and crush it with your hands or a big book - but be careful not to break the covering).

2. Add butter and flavouring to the biscuits and mix it till it reaches the texture of wet sea sand.

3. Cover the inside of a 30 cm tart pan with the cookie mixture to form the crust

and let it set in the fridge4. Stir the caramel-condensed

milk till smooth and smear it on the bottom layer of the crust

5. Put chocolate, cream and butter in a glass bowl and melt it over a big pot with boiling water (or alternatively melt it over an open boiling kettle – just be sure to protect your hands)

6. Stir continuously till it’s smooth and pour it into the tart pan

7. Place in the fridge for 2-4 hours till it sets.

Serve it to your guests or, alternatively, eat it all by yourself and tell no one…

Something Salty• 2 slices of toastable bread • enough chicken for one

sandwich (it is great to use left-over chicken or smoked chicken)

• mayonnaise flavoured with salt and pepper

• 2 strips of bacon

• 1 gherkin• 2 slices of tomato• mozzarella cheese - thinly

sliced

Instructions:1. Fry bacon till crispy2. Flake the chicken and mix it

with the mayo3. Place the bread on a

functional surface and put the thinly sliced mozzarella on one side of the bread

4. Spoon chicken on top of cheese

5. Place the tomato slices – flavoured with salt and pepper - on top of the chicken

6. Place the gherkins and bacon on top of the tomato

7. Cover the one side of the bread with another slice to make a sandwich

hakke is uitgehaal. Die tema, Breakfast as Tiffany’s. Die okasie, Minerva Houswarming. Ons het die jaar weer goed afgeskop op 6 Februarie, met die jaarlikse Houswarming, sommer hier op ons voorgras. Daar is besluit om die geleentheid hierdie jaar ‘n bietjie meer elegant te hou en ‘n kos en wyn paring was dus op die spyskaart. Die dames is verwelkom met sappies en foto’s is geneem van almal in hul mooi

uitrustings. Daarna is almal verwelkom om hul sitplekke in te neem, waarna Nesta en Mia die verwelkomings gedoen het. Hennie Retief van Van Loveren wynlandgoed, is aan die dames bekendgestel en het die wyn- en kos paring gelei. Hy het elke wyn of likeur bekendgestel en ‘n kort gesiedenis oor elkeen gegee. Altesaam is een vonkelwyn, drie wyne gegroepeer met peuselhappies en ‘n likeur geproe. ‘n paar Dagbreek eerstejaars, netjies in formele

drag, het die bediening behartig. Die algemene gevoel onder Minervianers na Housewarming, was verdeeld. Sommige Minervianers wou gehad het dat daar meer kaartjies beskikbaar moes wees, maar die wat wel daar was het gevoel dat die geleentheid baie beter as vorige jare was. Dit was baie meer georden gesofistikeerd. Die feit dat almal nie kaartjies kon koop nie was ongerieflik, maar dit was omdat die perseel en die beskikbare hoeveelheid tafels en stoele nie meer gaste sou kon hanteer nie. Vanuit die eerstejaar Liane Greyvensteyn se oogpunt was dit “’n baie lekker aand om net saam met my vriendinne te kuier en rustig te raak. Die atmosfeer van die aand was baie stylvol.” Nog ‘n eerstejaar, Suné Philander het gesê “dit was vir my ‘n baie lekker geleentheid, veral omdat dit die eerste keer was wat die eerstejaars en die seniors saam kon kuier en mekaar beter kon leer ken.”

Jy het dit oorweeg om ‘n paar vriendinne na jou kamer toe te nooi, maar die derdejaar in jou seksie gaan dit heel moontlik verloor as julle harder as vyf desibells praat (sy is juis ‘n senu-wrak na die laaste toetsweek).

Met die uitbreiding van ons COB (hier oorkant die pad), is ‘n Caltex ciabatta net te gerieflik naby, maar wat is die punt van ‘n middernagtelike peuselhappie as jy nie verder as 100m van die koshuis af was nie? Vir die eerstejaars wat nou met ‘n krisis sit, moet jouself nie bekommer nie, ek is mos hier om vir jou met jou tyd-indeling te help.

Na ‘n besige naweek is daar amper nie ‘n beter manier om te ontspan as met ‘n Spurburger en ‘n biertjie in jou linkerhand vir ‘n rustige dog meningsvolle kuiertjie nie. Vir ‘n bietjie opwinding kan julle iemand nomineer om te

verjaar, want niks sê partytjie soos ‘n sparkler en ‘n groep volwassenes wat vir jou sing nie.

twee goed: of jy dink aan liefde en sonskyn en ’n wonderlike tyd saam met jou kêrel, of jy dink aan paartjies oral op kampus en op Valentynsdag is dit sommer drie dubbel keer erger as gewoonlik. Almal hou hande vas en soen en jy sing maar in jou kop Beyonce se “All the Single Ladies”. Valentynsdag 2014 is nou al verby, maar dit kom gelukkig (of ongelukkig) elke jaar. Pallas het dit goed gedink om V-dag 2015 ’n bietjie snaakser, makliker en dalk nie so eensaam te maak nie.
