Viet Ville (Vietnamese Village) KM 13, Lourdes, Puerto Princesa, Palawan Along with Bataan, Palawan was one of the safe havens for Vietnamese refugees in the 1970’s to 1990’s. Most of them have been repatriated to Western countries, so only two remain in Viet Ville: Nguyen Lanh Nhan and Pham Thi Anh. The village is now a cultural destination and restaurant, and Nguyen and Pham work here and help give tours. The Vietnamese Village is away from the city center, but is near the port that takes you to the Subterranean River. This makes it a good place for a meal after sightseeing at the river. Here, you can try Pham Thi Anh’s pho (P110), a noodle soup that uses beef marrow (also known as bulalo) stewed for over ten hours. Bona’s Chaolong-an Manalo Extension, Puerto Princesa, Palawan For Vietnamese dishes without having to leave the city proper, Bona’s is the place to go. Bona’s was established by a Vietnamese refugee, though the current owner is a Filipino. Order the chaolong (P100), a savory beef noodle soup. Kinabuch’s Puerto Princesa City Proper, Palawan For a taste of Palawan’s exotic food, head on over to Kinabuch’s. Apart from the usual grilled seafood and bar fare, they served crocodile sisig and tamilok. The crocodile sisig is the tamer of the two – the spicy dish tastes similar to ground pork while the tamilok is more of an adventure. Our verdict? If you enjoy raw oysters and kinilaw dishes, you’ll love tamilok. Our multimedia producer actually ordered seconds when she went there! If not, you’ll probably end up like our assistant cameraman who gagged after trying it. But love it or hate it, tamilok is definitely part of the Puerto Princesa experience! Ka Lui Puerto Princesa City Proper, Palawan Ka Lui was selected as one of the best Asian restaurants in the prestigious 2012/2013 Miele Guide – and for good reason! From its polished bamboo interiors, pillows that take the place of chairs, and fresh seafood, Ka Lui sums up the best of Pinoy island life. Ka Lui is just across Kinabuch’s and you can never go wrong with their seafood dishes: cuttlefish sisig, sashimi, grilled tuna steaks. Try the Tubbataha Salad, which combines raw tuna, mangoes, papayas, pomelos, avocadoes and juicy lato seaweed. Diners receive a complimentary bowl of seasonal fruits at the end of each meal, and are free to wander around the art gallery out back. What to see

Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National ParkSabang Beach, Puerto Princesa, PalawanColloquially known as the underground river, the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park is the most famous destination in Puerto Princesa. Our tip: Be at the jump-off port by 7:00 AM. The line gets very long, so the sooner youre there, the better.

Sidetrip alert! On the way to the jump-off point, you can also try an 800-meter zip line over open water! From the main road, itll take a ten-minute trek to the zip line area. It costs P550. Just ask your multicab driver for directions.

Irawan Masagana FallsBrgy. Irawan, Puerto Princesa, PalawanThis one was discovered by accident, when local guides decided to trek along the river without any plan. What they found was a waterfall that emptied out into a small cove-like pool. Here, you can dive into the cool water away from the rush of tourists that frequent Palawans more famous destinations. Ang pinakapanalo rito, libre ang magpunta sa falls, said Drew.

Batak Cultural VillageThe Batak are one of Palawans oldest indigenous tribes. Theyre a hunting-and-gathering tribe that lives in the mountains of Palawan, and their cultural village lets travelers learn about their culture and helps provide extra income to their families. The small museum features handicrafts and musical instruments, while the souvenir shops sells simple but beautiful woven baskets.

Palawan Wildlife Rescue and Conservation CenterThe young and young at heart will enjoy seeing the crocodile park and the skeleton of a 20-foot-long crocodile that was captured alive in the 1990s after it attacked a local. The park houses crocodiles and other animals rescued from poachers, and breeds a non-endangered species of crocodile for its meat. Kids will like the souvenir shops, which sell crocodile stuffed toys and keychains.

Rancho MitraBrgy. Santa Monica, Puerto Princesa, PalawanThis ranch gives a birds-eye view of Puerto Princesa and the surrounding islets, but is just 20 minutes away from the city proper. Take as many photos as you want, or try horseback riding and zip lines.

Castaways ShackPuerto Princesa City Proper, PalawanLooking for an ultra-chill bar and souvenir shop? Drew and the crew visited Castaway Shack, a hangout place run by laidback, reggae-loving guys. At this off-the-beaten-track bar, they play music, serve drinks of their own recipes, teach guests how to play reggae instruments, and chat with tourists. If youre up for a night of connecting with locals over drinks, this is the place to be.

Nonong Finez, the owner, kept joking with Drew. Nagsimula ito sa tambay eh. Tambayan ng mga kaibigan, bakit hindi? Yun yung pinakamaganda sa lahat, yung inom at music. Pero bawal dito yung sobrang lasing. Dapat chill lang., he said. Wala kaming wi-fi dito. Mas maganda yung nakikipag-kwentuhan.

As for the souvenirs, they sell a wide array of handmade lamps, jewelry, instruments and woven goods.

Iwahig Firefly Watching TourNight falls, but sightseeing doesnt have to stop. Starting at 7:00 p.m., the Iwahig Firefly Eco-Park opens its gates to tourists. Hop in a boat and take a slow tour along the river. With a clear sky full of stars above, an expert boatman beside you, fireflies in the trees, and glowing plankton in the river, you cant go wrong.

What to buy for pasalubongWoven goods from the Binuatan Weaving CenterDid you know that Palawan was one of the woven goods suppliers for Calvin Kleins home decor collection? The Binuatan Weaving Center is both a pasalubong shop and travel experience, as the friendly weavers let visitors try using the looms for free. A pack of six placemats with a matching table runner costs around P400. There are also table sets for larger groups, bags, laptop cases and more.

Crocodile meatIf you enjoyed the crocodile sisig, youll be happy to know that airport-ready packages of the stuff are for sale in the city proper. Just ask the multicab driver to bring you to Croconatics, a stall near the tiangge that supplies crocodile meat to many of Puerto Princesas grills.

Bakers HillBrgy. Santa Monica, Puerto Princesa, PalawanIf youre coming from Rancho Mitra, dont forget to pass by Bakers Hill. Not only does the bakery sell delicious pasalubong like crinkles and broas, its also a tourist destination because of the lovely gardens and mini-zoo designed by its owner. Guests are welcome to run around the park, enjoy the flowers, play on the swings, and take as many photos as you want. Trust us, everything in the park is Instagram-ready.

Heres the four-day Puerto Princesa itinerary that I used last month.

Where to stay

Go! Hotels Puerto PrincesaCheck-in time: 2:00 PM, check-out time: 11:00 AMEasy on the pocket and located along the main road of Puerto Princesa, Go! is a great choice for budget-conscious travelers. Booking a room is like booking a flight: The earlier you book, the cheaper it will be. I booked for my family four months in advance and got each room for just P688 a night. If we had booked a week before arriving, it would have cost P1,088 a night. The hotel is conveniently located beside a mall and a tricycle terminal. On the first floor of Go!, youll find the office of Gullivers Travels 24/7 Tours, which organized the more logistically challenging parts of our trip.Pros:Free airport transfer, wi-fi, cable TV, hot and cold shower, family-friendly atmosphereCons:Free wi-fi isnt always reliable. The room can feel cramped if you have plenty of luggage. Breakfast is convenient but overpriced never order the cereal.

Day #1:Tour the city, see some firefliesTour agencies offer the half-day city tour for P600 per person, inclusive of air-conditioned van transfers and entrance fees. However, you can DIY by flagging down tricycles, which charge P8 to P10 per person, per destination. This will cost under P200 per person!Mix and match the locations below:

Palawan Wildlife Rescue and Conservation Center (Crocodile Farm)Entrance fee: P40The crocodile center is part-zoo, part-farm. Two things make this place special: 1) They have the skin and skeleton of a 17-foot-long crocodile captured alive in the 1990s, and 2) they sell crocodile meat sisig in the canteen.

Bakers HillEntrance fee: FreeOwned by landscaper Shirley Flores, Bakers Hill is a tourist-y park that showcases her garden designs. Make a quick stop here to walk around the gardens and grab a snack from their bakery. People will tell you to try the hopia, but after trying it,Im still an Eng Bee Tin girl. If you ask me, the real star of the bakery are their crunchy, sweet broas and fudgy chocolate crinkles (pictured above, P40 to P60 per container).Bakers Hill also has a restaurant that serves simple, home-style dishes. Stop here for lunch to fuel up.

Binuatan Weaving CenterEntrance fee: FreeThe Binuatan Weaving Center is a source of stable, additional income for the farming families of Palawan. Binuatan, along with other provincial weaving centers, have supplied Calvin Kleins home decor line. However, theyre only starting to gain name recall among Filipinos.Mang Dodong (above), a middle-aged man who has been weaving for the past three years, says: Dati, hindi naman ganoong ka-sikat[yungweaving center]Nag-boomlang talaga nung sinama ngtourism. (The weaving center wasnt that famous before. It boomed after the local tourist office began including it in their tours.)

A set of six placemats with a matching table runner costs P480, while smaller items such as wallets and folders go for under P100. Even better, the weavers encourage visitors to try the handlooms, and are game to guide you through the process.

Plaza CuartelThere isnt much to see in Plaza Cuartel, but the grim story behind it is unforgettable. The WW2 garrison was where Japanese imperial troops held around 300 POWs, mostly Americans. On December 19, 1944 these POWs were led into air raid shelters, doused with gasoline and burned alive. Those who tried to escape were gunned down and attacked with bayonets.Miraculously, 11 POWs managed to escape by swimming into the sea and towards the neighboring municipalities. They were rescued by the inmates of the Iwahig Penal Colony.[Read the account of survivor Corporal Glenn McDole here.]These days, the gate is all that remains of Plaza Cuartels original structure. The garrison has been turned into a park that bears almost no trace of its tragic past. Look for the monument bearing the names of the POWs who suffered at the hands of their captors. Don Schloat, a sculptor and one of the 11 survivors of the massacre, created a metal sculpture for the monument: an emaciated soldier rising from the flames.

Iwahig Firefly WatchingHands down, this was the most memorable part of our trip to Palawan. Open at 7:00 PM until midnight, the 45-minute-long firefly tour takes you around the banks of the Iwahig River. Aside from the fireflies glowing in the mangroves, youll be treated to a clear sky full of stars and even plankton glittering in the water. I wont spoil how they do it, but the guides will even teach you how to communicate with the fireflies! The backbone of the tour are the knowledgeable guides, who also act as boatmen. Our guide, RJ, shared that when the park is closed, their team of boatmen trains by rowing out together, studying the stars and sharing new trivia. This lets them point out constellations with laser pointers and discuss them at length.

Day #2:Enjoy the island lifeTwo island adventures share one port: A day trip to the high-end Dos Palmas Resort or island-hopping in Honda Bay. Both offer the chance to go snorkeling among colorful corals; Dos Palmas is for those who would like to sit back and enjoy some luxury while Honda Bay is for those looking for more action.[Starfish Island, one of the Honda Bay islands, is teeming with the five-legged creatures.]I chose to take a more chill route of Dos Palmas: Their day package costs P1800 and includes snorkeling, kayaking, cycling, beachside cabanas, a seafood buffet lunch, and boat rides going to and from the resort. Their package is admittedly expensive, so we just decided to try and eat our weight in seafood. Another downside is that the tour package doesnt include use of their swimming pools. We arrived at Dos Palmas before 10:00 AM, and a boat took us back to Puerto Princesa at 4:00 PM.

Dinner at Kinabuchs Sports BarRizal Avenue, Puerto PrincesaKinabuchs is owned by Butch Chase, a motorcycle enthusiast whose Caucasian appearance belies his ability to speak Filipino with a rough Tagalog accent! Born to an American father and Russian mother, Butch grew up and studied in Manila, married a Filipina and opened up shop in Puerto Princesa.

His restaurants name translates to At Buchs or Butchs Place. Apart from grilled seafood and bar food, they serve exotic dishes liketamilok(served either raw or calamari-style) and crocodile meat.

Day #3:Cross off that bucket list

Puerto Princesa Underground RiverPuerto Princesas most famous tourist destination went mainstream after being included inThe Seven New Wonders of the World. With its jade pool and towering rock formations, its no wonder why.My only problem with the tour is that the guides spiels were more comedic than they were educational. While entertaining at first, hearing joke after joke about rock formations gets tiring. Id much rather hear geeky trivia about flowstones!Important:Schedule this on your third or fourth day in Palawan, since youll need to visit the tourism office of Puerto Princesa with a valid ID to request for a permit a few days in advance. If booking with a tour agency, theyll take care of this step for you and also prepare a van to take you to the port. Be prepared to leave your hotel at 7:00 AM and spend half the morning in line for the boats; if you arent booking with a tour agency, a tricycle ride to the port will cost P300 to P350.

Zip line at Ugong RockIf youve still got energy after seeing the Underground River, pass by the zip line on your way back to the city center.

Dinner at the Vietnamese VillageVietnamese refugees of the Indo-China war took refuge in Palawan. While most of the Vietnamese people are no longer here, they did leave a culinary mark with their noodle dish called chaolong.Youll pass the Vietnamese Village, an old settlement that still serves the food, on the way back to the city proper. If you want to try chaolong on another day, city-basedchaolongan(chaolong restaurant) visitBonas, a roadside eatery along Manalo street. Each bowl costs P50.

Day #4:Take it easy in the city

Pasalubong shopping: LRC TianggeFor pearls and other souvenirs, hit up the LRC Tiangge and look for the shop named Coras. Cultured pearls are cheap. Earrings go for P10 to P80, depending on the size and quality. Bracelets and necklaces start at P70; for P500, you can get a high quality strand necklace a laBreakfast at Tiffanys. The larger, rarer South Sea pearls start at P1000 for a pair of earrings, though prices are negotiable.

Just outside Coras is Croconatics, a food stall that sells cooked and frozen crocodile meat in airport-friendly packaging. Get a pack of crocodile sisig, tapa or lechon kawali; P160 will get you a single serving that weighs 180 grams.

Goodbye meal atKaLui Restaurant369 Rizal Avenue, Puerto PrincesaTelephone: (+048) 433 2580Open 11 AM 2 PM for lunch, 6 PM 10:30 PM for dinner.Closed on Sundays.End your trip on a sweet note by dining at one of the best restaurants in Puerto Princesa. KaLui (pronounced kah-loo-ee) resembles a giantbahay kubo, with woven sawali walls and bamboo flooring. Here, guests go barefoot and can plop down on cushions instead of chairs.

Order the Sizzling Seafood Sisig (P170), made with cuttlefish and shrimp instead of the usual fatty pork. The KaLui Special of the Day (P395) is good for two to three people, and comes with grilled tuna steak, two entrees, a plate of lat seaweed, and a fruit bowl for dessert. The Tubbataha Salad (P250), pictured above, is a colorful combo of island flavors: raw tuna on a bed of lat seaweed, papaya, pomelo, fresh mangoes and avocado; all topped with garlic, chili, and KaLuis secret dressing.Reservations are highly recommended if you want to dine at KaLui, whose tables are taken faster than you can say seafood. Trust me and our tummies, the extra effort of making a phone call is worth it.Our goodbye lunch at KaLui summed up all we loved about Puerto Princesa: an escape from city life that takes you away from the crowd and back to nature.Whole Day Tour Itinerary06:30 - 07:00 am Preparation/Assembly Time07:00 - 10:00 am Depart downtown Puerto Princesa(Land travel to Sabang Wharf)10:00 - 11:00 am Mangrove Paddle Boat Tour11:00 - 11:30 am Boat ride to Underground River (Sabang Wharf to Underground River)11:30 - 12:30 pm Boat Tour (1.5km) inside Underground River12:30 - 02:00 pm Lunch at the Park Ground (picture taking, tour)02:00 - 02:30 Boat ride back to Sabang Wharf02:45 - 05:30 Depart Sabang Wharf for downtown Puerto Princesa (Land travel to downtown Puerto Princesa)
