Today’s Veteran Of The Day is Air Force Veteran Gerald J. Marenich, who worked on radar sites during his 20 years in the service. While attending the University of Detroit, Gerald J. Marenich was part of the Air Force ROTC program. In 1955, the Air Force commissioned Marenich as a second lieutenant. Once he entered active duty, he trained as an interceptor controller at Tyndall Air Force Base in Panama City, Florida. Marenich first served at a remote radar site at Campion Air Force Station in Alaska. In 1958, Marenich was selected to participate in a six-month-long exercise to evaluate the ability of the Air Force long-range interceptors and the Army’s Nike system to defend against large waves of attacking jet bombers. He later transferred to a Semi-Automatic Ground Environment Site in Virginia and then to a radar site in Germany. He took on multiple assignments at Tactical Air Control Group sites in Texas and Arizona and one assignment in Japan. Marenich also deployed on temporary tours in Iceland, Thailand, Korea, Norway, and the Netherlands. His final assignment was with the 552nd Air Force Airborne Early Warning and Control Wing division in Sacramento, California, at the McClellan Air Force Base. After 20 years in the service, Marenich retired on May 1, 1975, at the rank of major. During his service, Marenich received a Meritorious Service Medal, an Air Medal, a Combat Readiness Medal, a National Defense Service Medal, an Air Force Expeditionary Medal and a Master Weapons Controller badge . Marenich went on to work as an air traffic control specialist within the Federal Aviation Administration. He served in this capacity in the California locations of Sacramento, Rancho Murietta, Arcata, and Marysville, until his retirement in 1996. Marenich joined the Knights of Columbus in 1951 but had to drop out due to his military service. He rejoined the group and Council 4970 in 1997, at the urging of a fellow Air Force Veteran. Within the Knights of Columbus, Marenich served in many positions, including the high honor of Grand Knight. He also served as chairman of the Family of the Month/Year Program. He is currently very active in voluntary service to his parish and community. His past activities include being Head Usher at his parish and volunteering for the parish food locker. He has also engaged in fundraising events for the intellectually disabled. Marenich currently resides in Sacramento, California. Thank you for your service!

JOE’S CAFÉ…Stop by for a tasty bit! Joe Romanazzi, Past Grand Knight

Chug, Chug, Toot, Toot, Here We Go!

In late January, a small group of Brother Knights and Lady Knights from our Council once again made the popular, scenic Amtrak train trip to Reno. The trip was expertly facilitated by “Gobbo Family Productions”, a venerable institution specializing in great parties, sporting events, and exciting travel for adventurous Council 4970 members. For those of you who may not know, the California Zephyr route travels between Chicago and Emeryville, California. We rode the portion often referred to as the Snow Train from Roseville to Reno and back. This was the second time my wife and I went along on this trip. Last year you may recall that I had my very first gall bladder attack on the return trip home. About a month later, I experienced a second painful attack which resulted in emergency surgery to remove my diseased gall bladder. Thank God our then Deputy Grand Knight Miguel Sabral, stepped up and covered for me for a couple of weeks while I recuperated and could finally resume my duties. The youngster made me proud and continues to do well this year as he moves our council forward as our current Grand Knight. But alas, I have digressed and need to get back on track before the wheels fall off this article. All Aboard!! Our High Sierra train odyssey began when the magic carpet made of steel pulled out of the Roseville Amtrak Station headed for Reno. As we traveled east, we rolled along past towns, farms and fields, and beautiful shimmering lakes. We admired pristine rivers and traversed high mountain passes. We could feel the wheels rumbling beneath the floor as we rocked to a gentle beat and felt the rhythm of the rails. Along the way, we had to pull onto rail sidings to allow freight trains with higher priority to zip around us. The train sped up, then slowed down as it climbed steep grades and snaked its way around curves. We were plunged into total darkness at a tunnel’s entrance and into marvelous light at the tunnel’s exit. The stunning rock formations and beautiful coniferous forests were incredible to behold. Naturalist John Muir was 100% correct when he wrote, “Everybody needs beauty...places to play in and pray in where nature may heal and cheer and give strength to the body and soul alike.”

My Brothers, besides capturing spectacular views of the snow-covered Sierra Nevada Mountains, riding on the Snow Train afforded golden opportunities to reflect on numerous other vistas as they presented themselves through the windows of the moving train. Thinking about our train being pulled by two large locomotives and also seeing motionless strings of freight and passenger cars in the railyards got me ruminating about the powerful force needed to pull and push all of them along. Without engineers operating powerful locomotive engines, train cars go nowhere. In a way, this is the same sort of a role the Lord plays in our own lives. We may sometimes feel our lives have been derailed or stalled by an event that prohibits forward movement. We may even feel abandoned. But suddenly, the Chief Engineer of Life takes control, places us back on the main line, blows the whistle, and away we go continuing with all the excitement our journeys through this lifetime have to offer. The Lord proves over and over that He is the Good Shepherd who is our strength and our salvation. He guides us on our earthly journeys and eventually leads us to everlasting joy and peace. I thank the Lord for granting us a safe and memorable train excursion across the Sierras to The Biggest Little City in the World and for showcasing His Divine Father’s wondrous hand in Creation. Now Lord, about those wretched slot machines…

CURRENT EVENTS COMMENTARY: I am using a home remedy for the Coronavirus. I don't use TP, I don't brush my teeth, I don’t use deodorant, I eat a lot of beans, and I sniff pepper to increase my sneezing. I can't say that these actions will prevent catching the virus, but that social distancing thing has been going pretty well.

FAMILY OF THE MONTH

Mario La Schiazza, Family Activities Congratulations to the Gerald Marenich Family, Arden-Carmichael Council's February 2020 Family of the Month. Sir Knight Gerald and his wife Barbara were long time parishioners at St John the Evangelist Parish, until her passing in October 2013, and where Gerald continues to be involved. Gerald was an usher at St John's for many years and served as the Head Usher from 1996 until 2006. Gerald and Barbara were also very active in St John's St Vincent de Paul's Conference, where both volunteered at the parish Food Locker, and, in addition Barbara provided home visits to the needy of the community. She also volunteered as a member of the Bereavement Committee. Their two children, Robert and Lisa, attended St John's Parish School and Robert served as an Altar Server.

Gerald joined the Knights of Columbus in 1951 and received his Second and Third Degrees in 1952 while attending the University of Detroit. He was enrolled in the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corp (ROTC) at the same time, and upon graduation in January 1955, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Air Force and entered active duty in April of the same year. As a result of his military commitment, he dropped out of the Knights. His last assignment in the Air Force was as a member of the 552nd Airborne Early Warning and Control Wing at McClellan Air Force Base, which brought the family to Sacramento. After twenty years of military service, he retired from the Air Force, and began a second career with the Federal Aviation Administration as an Air Traffic Control Specialist. He eventually retired a second time after twenty years of service with the FAA. Following that retirement, and with the strong urging of Brother Gene Gobbo, Gerald rejoined the Knights in 1997. He has served Council 4970 in a number of positions, including serving as the Grand Knight during the 2001-2002 Columbian Year. He currently serves as the Council Photographer. In April of 2002, Gerald received his Fourth Degree in a ceremony in

Modesto, California, and is currently a member of Christ the King Assembly. His son Robert served in the Marine Corps and Robert's son, Christian joined the US Navy and is assigned at the Charleston Naval Station in Charleston, South Carolina, undergoing Nuclear Engineering training. Gerald’s daughter and her husband Jens, and their three daughters (Ella, Sonja, and Emi) returned from Singapore last summer, after having lived there for the past fourteen years, and now reside in Redondo Beach, California.

GASOLINE Submitted by the editor

It’s always been a puzzle why the German Luftwaffe kept on using 87 Octane Aviation Gasoline while the Americans and British used 100 Octane Gasoline in their Spitfire Fighters and Americans used 130 Octane in our P-51 and other fighters. This morning I discovered the reason! It seems that the German and British aircraft both used 87 Octane Gasoline in the first two years of the war. While that was fairly satisfactory in the German Daimler-Benz V-12 engine, It was marginal in the British Rolls-Royce Merlin XX engine in British aircraft. It fouled the spark plugs, caused valves to stick, and made frequent engine repair problems. Then came lend- lease and American aircraft began to enter British service in great numbers. If British engines hated 87 Octane gasoline, American, General Motors Built, Allison 1710 engines loathed and despised it. Something had to be done! Along came an American named Tim Palucka, a chemist for Sun Oil in their South East Texas Refinery. Never heard of him? Small wonder, very few people have. He took a French formula for enhancing the octane of Gasoline, and invented the "Cracking Tower" and produced 100-octane aviation Gasoline. This discovery led to great joy among our English Cousins and great distress among the Germans. A Spitfire fueled with 100 Octane gasoline was 34 miles per hour faster at 10,000 feet. The need to replace engines went from every 500 hours of operation to every 1,000 hours. Which reduced the cost of British aircraft by 300 Pounds Sterling. Even more, when used in 4 engine bombers. The Germans couldn't believe it when Spitfires that couldn't catch them a year ago started shooting their ME-109 E and G models right out of the sky. Of course, the matter had to be kept secret. If the Germans found out that it was a French Invention, They'd simply copy the original French patents. If any of you have ever wondered what they were doing in that 3 story white brick building in front of the Sun Oil Refinery on Old Highway 90, that was it. They were re-inventing gasoline. The American Allison engines improved remarkably with 100 Octane gasoline, but did much better when 130 octane gasoline came along in 1944. The 130 Octane also improved the Radial Engine Bombers we produced. The Germans and Japanese never snapped to the fact that we had re-invented gasoline. Neither did our "Friends" the Russians. 100,000 Americans died in the skies over Europe. Lord only knows what that number would have been without "Super-Gasoline". And it all was invented just a few miles west of Beaumont, and we never knew a thing about it. (This is a declassified article by the British Society of Chemists (Declassified in 2014))

The Fourteen Holy Helpers: Plague saints for a time of coronavirus

A depiction of the Fourteen Holy Helpers from Bavaria, 19th century, restored by Alois Liebwein. Public domain.

Denver, Colo., Mar 11, 2020 / 03:01 am (CNA).- By this time in the coronavirus outbreak, you may have cruised the empty toilet paper aisles and pasta shelves at your local grocery store, and could have had moments of panic, or at least heightened anxiety. With 13 U.S. states having declared a state of emergency over COVID-19, what was once an overseas worry is now stateside. And for the general population, being a part of something like this is a new, and disconcerting, experience. But it’s not a new experience in the life of the Church.

In the middle of the 14th century, the plague - also called “The Black Death” - also called “The Greatest Catastrophe Ever” - ravaged Europe, killing 50 million people, or about 60% of the population (a vastly higher death rate than coronavirus), within a few years.

Lacking the advances of modern medicine today, and layering dead bodies in pits like “lasagna,” the people had no choice but to cling to their faith.

It was at this time that the Fourteen Holy Helpers - Catholics saints, all but one of whom were early martyrs - came to be invoked by Catholics against the plague and other misfortunes.

According to New Liturgical Movement, devotion to these 14 saints started in Germany at the time of the plague, and they were called “Nothelfer,” which in German means “helpers in need.”

As bouts of the plague resurfaced over the decades, devotion to the Holy Helpers spread to other countries, and eventually Nicholas V declared that devotion to the saints came with special indulgences.

According to New Liturgical Movement, this introduction to the feast of the Holy Helpers (celebrated Aug. 8 in some places) can be found in the Cracow Missal of 1483:

“The Mass of the Fourteen Holy Helpers, approved by Pope Nicholas…it is powerful on their behalf, however so much one is in great illness or anguish or sadness, or in whatsoever tribulation a man shall be. It is powerful also on behalf of the imprisoned and detained, on behalf of merchants and pilgrims, for those that have been sentenced to die, for those who are at war, for women who are struggling in childbirth, or with a miscarriage, and for (the forgiveness of) sins, and for the dead.”

The collect for their feast in the Missal of Bamberg reads: “Almighty and merciful God, who didst adorn Thy Saints George, Blase, Erasmus, Pantaleon, Vitus, Christopher, Denis, Cyriacus, Acacius, Eustace, Giles, Margaret, Barbara and Catherine with special privileges above all others, so that all who in their necessities implore their help, according to the grace of Thy promise, may attain the salutary effect of their pleading, grant to us, we beseech Thee, forgiveness of our sins, and with their merits interceding, deliver us from all adversities, and kindly hear our prayers.”
