US auto parts maker Flex-N-Gate, owned by Pakistanborn Shahid Khan, will build aplant in Detroit in what localofficials described on Monday asthe first new investment by anautomotive supplier in decadesfor Motor City, the cradle andformer beating heart of the carindustry.

US envoy asks expats to pourcapital into Pakistan

“This is the largest automotivesupplier investment in Detroit inmore than 20 years,” MayorMike Duggan said at a ground-breaking ceremony under a lightblue spring sky on Detroit’snortheast side. “We’re starting tocompete and win again.”

Urbana, Illinois-based Flex-N-Gate will invest $95 million inthe plant, which will employ 400to 700 people and supply partsto Ford Motor Co. It is sched-uled to open in the first quarterof 2018.

Khan said Ford was the “greatimpetus” behind locating theplant in Detroit and said it aimsto employ locals. Workers wouldearn up to US$27 per hour in-cluding benefits and the plantwill use state-of-the-art auto-mated technology “in order topay people a living wage,” hesaid.

The supplier makes plastic exte-rior parts, especially front ends, and headlights. A Fordspokesperson said the companywould not provide “specific pro-duction details at this time” onwhich models the plant’s partswould be used.

Pakistan-born Khan, who alsoowns the National FootballLeague’s Jacksonville Jaguars, came to the United Statesdecades ago to study mechanicalengineering at the University ofIllinois.

Auto plants once proliferatedacross Detroit, and many todayare empty red-brick hulks. OnlyGeneral Motors Co and FiatChrysler Automobiles NV[FCA] still have operationalplants in the city. Over decadesof decline, Detroit’s populationfell to 700,000 from a peak of1.8 million people in 1950, re-flected in the many vacant and

decaying homes in the areaaround the future Flex-N-Gateplant. Since going throughbankruptcy earlier this decade,Detroit has experienced a slightrenaissance with businesses andartists moving in.

Pakistan-born among richestsport team owners in the worldThe plight of American manu-facturing, as well as immigration, were the focus of RepublicanPresident Donald Trump’s elec-tion campaign. Trump has criti-cized automakers for buildingcars in Mexico and talked up an-nouncements of US investmentsby Ford, GM and FCA, includ-ing some that had been an-nounced before he took office.

Khan said the decision to investin Detroit predated Trump’spresidency. But he said that inthe US automotive industrytoday, “you have to have a socialconscience. You can do that andstill make investments like this.”

Seldom have we waited for a sportingmilestone with such eagerness, and anxiety,as we did for master batsman Younis Khanto complete 10,000 runs in Test cricket atthe start of his farewell journey.

The Sabina Park in Kingston, Jamaica, fi-nally saw the stalwart become just the 13thman in the history of Test cricket, and thefirst Pakistani, to reach the five figure markon Sunday, the third day of the first Testagainst the West Indies.

The 39-year-old right hander from Mar-dan began his 116th Test with 9,977 runsfrom 207 innings and went to the elusivelandmark — only the fifth batsman fromAsia to do so — after tea. At the break hewas one tantalising run short of the dis-tinction.

The great man didn’t have to wait long ashe needed only two balls into the final ses-sion to get to the five figures, sweeping off-spinner Roston Chase for a boundary. Heraised his bat to the Pakistan dressing-room to acknowledge the applause of histeammates.

India’s Sachin Tendulkar leads the list of

most run-getters in Test cricket with 15,921in 200 matches. Other members of this ex-alted club are Ricky Ponting of Australia(13,378 runs in 168 Tests), South Africa’sJacques Kallis (13,289 in 166), RahulDravid of India (13,288 in 164), Sri Lanka’sKumar Sangakkara (12,400 in 134), WestIndies’ duo of Brian Lara (11,953 in 131),Shivnarine Chanderpaul (11,867 in 164),Mahela Jayawardene of Sri Lanka (11,814in 149), Australia’s Allan Border (11,174 in156), Alastair Cook of England (11,057 in140), Australia’s Steve Waugh (10,927 in168) and India’s Sunil Gavaskar (10,122 in125 matches) — the first player in Test his-tory to cross the 10,000-run mark in 1987.

It was only a question of when, and not if,Younis Khan would get there once he hadsurpassed compatriot Javed Miandad’slongstanding Pakistan landmark of 8,832runs; He had gone past Miandad — whoplayed 189 innings during a 124-Test ca-reer from 1976-77 till 1993-94 — in eightfewer innings and 22 fewer matches.

When Miandad broke the then standingPakistan record of 5,058 runs, held by theincomparable Zaheer Abbas, by scoring adouble century against Sri Lanka at Faisal-

abad in 1985, none would have envisagedthat it would be the ever-smiling Younisbeing the custodian of being the country’sleading Test run-maker.

Younis shared many fruitful partnershipswith Inzamam-ul-Haq and MohammadYousuf and together the trio formed themainstay of the Pakistan batting in thenew millennium.

Both Inzamam and Yousuf were the twomen thought capable of eclipsing Mian-dad’s tally, but it was eventually Younis whoultimately put all of them behind on daythree of this rain-hit first Test against theWest Indies.

Tapal's recent ad campaign aims to breakgender stereotypes and celebrate modern, independent women.

With 63% of the population under the ageof 25 (source: UNICEF), Pakistan has oneof the largest young populations in Asia. Ofthe 50 million people that fall in the 18 to25 age bracket, 55% comprise urbanisedyoung people. Furthermore, the rapid urban-isation witnessed in the past few years (40%in 2016 compared with 32% in 2011 accord-ing to the Ministry of Finance), along withincreased exposure levels, have resulted insignificant changes in the urban landscape.Notable among these changes is the per-centage of women now in employment andthe consequent increase in their purchasingpower – and at a deeper level, a gradualchange in conventional gender roles.

These changes form the key insight behindTapal Danedar’s recent campaigns. Tapal isthe market leader in Pakistan’s tea industry, accounting for 45% of the market (source:Nielsen); Unilever follows at 24% and East-ern Tea Company at 16%, with the balancecoming from smaller regional brands. OfTapal’s 45% share, Danedar (the company’spremium leaf brand) accounts for approxi-mately 18%, and based on the company’s in-ternal research, has a wider penetration inthe urban areas.

To further increase their market share, andkeeping in mind the significance of urbanpenetration for the brand’s growth, in 2014Tapal realigned its positioning with the ob-jective of drawing in a younger age bracketinto their consumer fold. The result was thecampaign ‘Tum, Mein Aur Aik Cup Chai’

featuring Fawad Khan and Momal Shaikhreleased in late 2014, and a follow-up cam-paign in January 2017, featuring SanamSaeed and Adeel Hussain.

The 2014 campaign promoted the bond be-tween husbands and wives, but with a gen-der role reversal theme, by showing thehusband helping his wife with householdtasks, such as making tea. The current cam-paign goes a step further and now the hus-band is not only helping out in the kitchen,he is also taking care of the child.

According to Nida Haider, Managing Part-ner and Brand Strategy Director, IALSaatchi & Saatchi (Tapal’s creative agency),changing mindsets have not only resulted inthe rise of nuclear families, but also changedthe dynamics of young marriages. “There ismore connection and friendship betweencouples now; the woman is not just thedaughter-in-law or mother in the family set-up, her opinion as an equal partner carriesmore weight now.”

Haider says that although tea has manyfunctional drivers (boosts stamina, revitalisesenergy), an emotional driver is that it buildsintimacy and helps people unwind. “Webuilt on this emotional driver and layered it

with an insight about acknowledging quiet, relaxed moments between couples.”

“No one talks about the exhaustion newmothers face, yet in those moments, if yourhusband offers to make you a cup of tea andhelps out with the child, it seems like pure bliss!”

Commenting on how the 2017 iterationevolved, Haider adds that “no one talksabout the exhaustion new mothers face, yetin those moments, if your husband offers tomake you a cup of tea and helps out with thechild, it seems like pure bliss!”

The campaign has been released across allmedia, and although the results will bereleased at the end of the first quarter,Zulfiqar Ansari, Head of Marketing, Tapal, says that the idea of “gender role reversal hasresonated really well with the young, especially on digital. The shares, likes, comments and general feedback suggest thatthis new approach has been well received.”

Ansari adds that beneath the seeminglysimple veneer of a friendly husband-wiferelationship lies a social message that Tapalhopes to convey.

“As a brand, rather than promoting wrongstereotypes, it is our responsibility to helpshape positive mindsets and attitudes. Weneed to show more independent modernwomen and supportive husbands. Not everybrand aims to win a Lion or an Effie bycommunicating the social message in anaggressive way; some just do it softly andsubtly.”
