Painsley Catholic College School Direct Consortium
Thank you for your interest in our School Direct places available for teacher training 2015-16.
Painsley Catholic College is an outstanding 11-18 academy in the Staffordshire Moorlands. Painsley
Catholic College School Direct consortium is a group of very friendly, supportive schools, passionate about
creating the next generation of teachers. Painsley Catholic College became a National Teaching School in 2014 and is one of only 3 National Maths Hubs in the West Midlands.
We work in partnership with 3 universities (Birmingham City, Manchester Metropolitan and the University of Derby) and KNSPS, the Keele and North Staffordshire Primary SCITT (school centre initial teacher
training) for primary training.
As a consortium, we aim to provide high quality, school based initial teacher training. We believe our
provision ensures trainees feel fully prepared for life in the classroom and a career in education. The
schools work closely with the partner universities and SCITT to ensure that our Schools Direct students gain their Teaching Qualification giving them qualified teacher status (QTS) and a Postgraduate Certificate
in Education (PGCE). You will experience placements in 2 of our consortium schools throughout the year, as well as opportunities to visit the other schools for educational and professional studies. There
may also be opportunities to visit our partner special school for short placements.
All our staff are exceptionally skilled and passionate practitioners and you are welcome to visit us to discuss your chosen career.

What is School Direct?
School Direct allows participants the opportunity to work closely with schools to gain their Teaching
Qualification. Schools or groups of schools work in partnership, in many cases with local HEI providers, to develop a training programme that suits the needs of their trainees and the local education context.
5 | P a g e
What does our programme look like?
Our School Direct Programme is delivered in partnership with the University of Derby, Birmingham City University, Manchester Metropolitan University and the Keele University and North Staffordshire Primary
SCITT . On completion of your training year, you will be awarded a PGCE with Qualified Teacher Status and 60 masters level credits. Your School Direct Programme will consist of a combination of classroom
practice and relevant in school training. You will be given the opportunity to spend the majority of your time on ‘teaching practice’ at high quality school placements from across our consortium. You will also be
offered a programme of training developed and delivered by consortium schools and our HEI partners.
In school, you will be supported by a dedicated and trained mentor, as well as a professional tutor, who are school based experienced staff. You will also have a University based tutors.
Your training lasts for one academic year (September-July).
Training through our consortium will also provide you with opportunities to develop your educational and
professional studies through school based sessions that include:
- Use of data and reporting; Liaison with parents
- Behaviour – sanction and reward
- G&T (more able) students - SEN / EAL, including the new SEN Code of Practice
- Pastoral care
- Differentiation
- Assessment for Learning and Success Criteria - Pedagogy – planning and assessment
- Access to our interactive NQT programme
How is the School Direct Programme funded?
There are two School Direct routes (School Direct and School Direct Salaried) which are very similar in
structure, but have different funding models, details of which can be found below:
If you secure a place on this route, the tuition fees for the programme will be £9000. These fees are paid to the University (in a series of installments across the academic year). To support you with these
payments, there are a number of different funding options available to you.
You may be eligible for a tax-free bursary or scholarship to support your training. These funding streams
are dependent on the phase/subject in which you are training your qualifications. A high degree
classification will allow you access to extra bursary funding. A Masters or PhD could also ensure you receive further funding. See page 15-18
In addition, you could also apply for a student loan to support your payments through student finance: http://www.studentfinance.direct.gov.uk
More information can be found at: http://www.education.gov.uk/get-into-teaching

School Direct offers 2 types of training places:
School Direct (SD) training programme - open to all graduates, and is funded by tuition fees paid by the trainee
School Direct (SDS) training programme (salaried) - for graduates with 3 or more years’ work
experience. The trainee is employed as an unqualified teacher by a school and their salary (around
£15,000pa) is subsidised and training costs for qualified teacher status (QTS) covered by the NCTL. To apply for this route you need to have had 3 years ‘full time’ industry/work experience, which
does not have to have been in the education sector.

Skills Tests
All students must pass tests skills tests in Literacy and Numeracy prior to being offered a place on the
course. You will also be required to have some school experience. Subject enhancement courses
are available for some secondary subjects. If your degree subject does not link to your chosen teaching subject, it is recommended that you undertake a subject knowledge enhancement course before you begin
training. Please contact us for further information.
Applicants for initial teacher training (ITT) are required to have passed the skills tests before the start of the course. Applicants for courses that begin in academic year 2015/16 can now book to take the skills
tests.
ITT providers will use skills tests results to inform their decisions so applicants are strongly advised to prepare thoroughly for their tests prior to taking them.
The first attempt at taking your skills tests in each subject is provided free of charge. You can book up to
two resits if required, but you will be expected to pay for these yourself.
Some candidates may be able to request special arrangements such as 25% extra time when registering
online for skills tests.
You can book your tests in advance for a date by which you are expecting to have submitted an
application. When you take the tests you will need to provide proof that you have applied for a teacher
training course. The tests are held at a Pearson Professional Test Centre (which also delivers Driving
Theory tests, so you may be familiar with them already). Please note from 1 December Learn Direct
will be responsible for delivering the professional skills tests. From Wednesday 1 October 2014,
learndirect will begin taking bookings for tests to be taken on or after 1 December. For more information
please use the booking and managing appointments section. You will need to register with learndirect in
addition to your Pearson VUE registration.

Teaching Agency School Experience Programme
If you are interested in Teaching Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics or MFL you can arrange to visit Painsley Catholic College through the Teaching Agency School Experience Programme. To apply you will need to
call the Teaching Agency Teacher Information Line. They have details of all of the dates we have available for School Experience and you will be able to request to visit us via them.
