ACTIVITIES WEEK 2015

We are very pleased to be able to offer an Activities Week again in 2015 as part of the Academy calendar. For the week of 22nd - 26th June 2015 the normal Academy timetable will be suspended for all students in Years 7-10 and staff will spend the week participating in a variety of activities not usually available during the normal day. The week is an opportunity for all students to learn new skills and develop socially. It will also allow the staff and students to work together in less formal situations, which will improve their working relationships in the coming academic year.

PAYMENT FOR ACTIVITIES

The costs for activities have been calculated according to a maximum number of students taking part. If there are insufficient numbers of students opting for a particular activity, then the activity may be cancelled. We have ensured that there is a broad range of activities in terms of both interest and cost, which will enable everyone to participate in a worthwhile activity. Some establishments are still to finalise their 2015 prices, therefore some costs may change slightly after this brochure has been printed. This year booking and payment for all activities will be online through the Torbay Holiday Programme website - www.torbayholidayprogramme.com. ACTIVITIES MUST BE PAID FOR AT THE TIME OF BOOKING and can be paid for by credit/debit card or with a PayPal account. All payments are non-refundable unless the activity is cancelled by the Academy.

ATTENDANCE

We regard Activities Week as an important part of your son’s or daughter’s development and expect normal attendance during this week. Any student not booked on or not attending could face a penalty fine. Booking will only be available from Monday 26

th January until Friday 13

th February 2015 and priority days will be given to those students whose attendance from

September 2014 to January 2015 is:

93%-100% with no Behaviour Centre visits - Booking available from Monday 26th

January 2015

85%-93% or up to 5 Behaviour Centre visits - Booking available from Wednesday 28th

January 2015

Friday 30th

January - Friday 13th

February will be available for all students to book. Parents will be notified in January by letter informing them of their child’s booking day. Bookings will only be valid if booked on the correct day(s). Any bookings submitted on an incorrect date will be cancelled.

Any absence should be notified in the usual manner through our absence lines on 01803 403602 (Waterleat Road) and 01803 403721 (Borough Road).

BEHAVIOUR

We have very high expectations regarding the conduct and behaviour of our students both within the Academy and in the wider community. The vast majority of our students rise to these expectations and are a credit to both us and their families. It is therefore vitally important that these standards are maintained, particularly on offsite visits where the reputation of the Academy is at stake. In order to keep students safe and allow everyone to enjoy their activities, students will not be permitted to take part in offsite activities if, between September 2014 and June 2015, they:

receive any fixed term exclusion

record six visits to the Behaviour Centre in any half term

Whilst we do not anticipate any major concerns or issues to arise with students selected to participate on any offsite visits. It should be noted that we may reserve the right to remove students who we feel may fail to achieve the high standards of conduct. In the unlikely event of this happening the decision will be made by the Principal of the Academy and would be a last resort. In these circumstances any monies paid may not be refunded. Where a trip is oversubscribed then those students with higher attendance will be considered first.

5. PAYMENT

- To go to the payment screen, click at the bottom of the form. You can use a Debit/Credit Card or a PayPal Account to pay - Either

complete the card detail boxes or sign in to your PayPal account to pay. Ensure you confirm your payment by clicking the button at the

bottom of the screen.

(If the payee’s details differ from the parent’s name, address and telephone number entered on the booking form, please amend them on the payment page to ensure the cardholder’s name address and telephone number match the details of where the card is registered. NB: This will not change the original details given on our booking form, just on PayPal’s. If you do not have a debit/credit card and a friend/relative pays for you, we will still have the correct contact details for the parent and child.) PROBLEMS WITH PAYMENT? Once your booking has been processed you will be taken through to the Torbay Holiday Programme confirmation of

booking page that shows your invoice with a green box at the top saying .

If you do not see this you have not yet confirmed your booking. Please check that you have confirmed all payment details on the PayPal website.

If you think you have paid but do not see a confirmation page as described above, do the following before contacting us:

1. Check your PayPal account to see if funds have left your account. If you do not see a transaction, then your booking has not been processed; you

may not have clicked the ‘Continue’ button to confirm your payment.

2. Check your email account to see if you have received a confirmation email – this is sent to the email address given on the booking form.

If you have no transaction details in your PayPal account and no confirmation email then your booking has NOT been successful. Please try

again, following the instructions given above closely. If you are still unsuccessful please email torbayholidayprogramme@gmail.com or send us a

message from the website by clicking ‘Contact Us Here’ under the ‘Help’ tab near the top of the screen. Office hours: Mon-Fri 9am-3pm.

4. COMPLETE THE BOOKING FORM

- Once you have finished adding activities complete the booking form beneath your ‘basket’. Details that must be completed have a star indicating this ( ). If you cannot see the form it can be found by clicking ‘View’ in the box above the activities:

EMAIL ADDRESS - Ensure the email is correct, as your confirmation of booking will be sent to this address!

CONTACT NUMBERS – We require two different telephone numbers so that we are able to contact you in an emergency or to inform you if details change for

an activity. The emergency contact number could be for work, a relative or even a neighbour.

2. SELECT AN ACTIVITY

- Your child must attend an activity each day throughout the week. If an activity takes place over two or more days the booking details will be found on

the first day of the activity. Please select all activities for the week in one booking transaction.

- Select an activity and click beneath it. Check the details and date are correct and click . You will now see your item in

your ‘Shopping Basket’.

3. ADD MORE ACTIVITIES

- To add another activity select above your ‘basket’ to return to the calendar. Click another date and select your next chosen

session. Repeat this process until your child has activities allocated to them for the whole week.

NB: All sessions are on a first come first served basis. Please ensure your child is in the correct year as detailed on the timetable, as some activities have different age limits for insurance purposes and they will not be able to participate. We have the right to cancel your booking if your child is not the correct age.

6. CONFIRMATION

A confirmation email will be sent to the email address given on the booking form within 24 hours. Beneath the invoice are more details and instructions

for the activities booked - Please read these carefully as additional parental consent forms may need to be completed depending on the activity.

Please check you have booked the correct activities on your confirmation email. If you have booked an activity by mistake, please inform us as soon

as possible, as we have to inform instructors of participant numbers and you will not be able to change to a different session if you leave it to the last

Decoupage is an easy way to decorate just about any object by glueing coloured paper cut outs and covering them with several coats of

Join a small group of walkers to follow a circular route enjoying our beautiful local coastline. Meet and collect from Goodrington.

CSI PAIGNTON

Come and join us in a brilliant introduction to Forensic Science and Crime Scene Investigation (CSI). Students will wear full crime scene kit to investigate

an aggravated burglary - a burglary followed by an assault - using footwear impressions, blood spatter, fingerprints, DNA, handwriting, ink analysis,

digital forensics, physical fits, paint and hairs. There are named suspects and by finding the clues and examining the evidence, the students can find out

who is guilty. And there may be a surprise outcome! An exciting and unpredictable role-play courtroom trial completes the event. Takes place at

BEACH DAY

Finish the week with a relaxing day at Goodrington Beach.  You will have the option to play beach games, enter sandcastle and shell competitions and

BIG CANVAS WORKSHOP

Create large scale canvases based on a Cornish painter Kurt Jackson. The paintings will be mixed media including painting, collage, drawing and fabric

techniques. It will be a fun and messy day with some great results that hopefully will be displayed around the Academy and local exhibitions. You are

LAKE FISHING AT TOWN PARKS

All equipment and maggots(!) provided for a day of fishing with guidance from staff at Town Parks. The lakes are around 1.5 acres in size with island

features and varying depth features to create fish holding areas. The top lake, the match lake, features a great many fish, including roach, perch, tench,

skimmer bream, bronze bream, rudd and, of course, a great many carp. It's not unusual to catch 30 or so carp around 5lb in a day's session! Meet at

ICT ACTIVITIES IN THE VLE ROOM

A variety of fun but educational activities for you to complete from Computer Graphics to making Apps, Cartoons and Animations. If you like

KENTS CAVERN & AMF BOWLING

Enjoy a visit to our world famous historical caves in the morning and then have lunch at AMF Bowling, Torquay followed by 2 games of bowling. Meet at

HORSE RIDING AT STAVERTON RIDING STABLES

Learn how to groom, tack up and about stable management. Once on your horse you will have a lesson to give you the basics of walk, halt, turn and

trot, to help you to feel at ease on your horse, and afterwards you will go out for an escorted hack along peaceful Devon lanes and tracks. Minibus

PAIGNTON ZOO

FOOTBALL FUN DAY

Bring your skateboard, BMX, scooter or inline skates and perfect all of your tricks at the largest indoor skate park in the South West! STUDENTS MUST

HAVE THEIR OWN HELMET WHICH MUST BE WORN. (No equipment provided) Students will spend around 4 hours at the park and lunch is provided.

MOUNTAIN BIKING AT HALDON OR DARTMOOR

Ride some of the most stunning mountain bike trails in the country, build on your bike handling skills and confidence, experience quality, fun, friendly

and inspirational mountain bike rides, whether you're a complete beginner, intermediate or experienced rider. No need to even bring a bike. Qualified

MOUNT HAWKE SKATE PARK

Meet at Goodrington. The day will include a coastal walk and games. Food is included. No transport provided.

HUBTASTIC

A variety of sporting activities organised by the PE department. Takes place at school in the Waterleat Road Sports Hub. No transport provided.

The day will be packed full of football challenges, tournaments and prizes. It is a great opportunity to test yourself against your friends and others in the

dribbling, speed, crossbar, juggling, penalty and goalkeeping challenges. See if you can lead your team to world cup glory in the tournaments

ICT ACTIVITIES IN THE VLE ROOM + FILM

Local water park on the beach at Goodrington. Have fun with your friends. For thrill seekers try the heart stopping plummet the Devil's Drop and

terrifically tumbling tyre rides, that'll have you hanging onto the edge of your tyre, literally, and the Wild Kamikaze - well the name says it all! If that

sounds a bit too much like hard work then a quick dip in the swimming pool and a laze on a sunbed might be more to your liking then you can do that

too, with views over South Devon's beautiful Torbay. Meet at Quaywest, Goodrington. No transport provided.

Pupils will be engaged in school based activities and supervised by a member of staff at all times. The onsite timetable will run at different times to the

normal day during the week. Students will be expected to attend the Academy at their normal school site in full uniform.

PLYMOUTH CRUISE AND AQUARIUM

Visit the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth, followed by a cruise around Plymouth Hoe. Coach travel from school is included.

SILVERSMITH 1 DAY RING & BEAD MAKING BEGINNERS

Spend the day making a piece of silver jewellery to take home. Takes place at Borough Road. No transport provided.

You’ve seen the movies, completed the lessons and maybe even bought the replica jacket. Now here’s your chance to experience life as a WW2 Tommy

- how he eats, sleeps, fights and if he’s lucky, how he survives. We’ll be setting up an army outpost with pup tents and a sandbagged machine gun

position, and you’ll have the opportunity to examine the uniform, weapons and equipment used by a British soldier in WW2. You’ll discover how he

lived in the field, brewed his tea and fought the enemy. We’ll look at how the wounded soldier was taken from the battlefield and the medical care he

received. We’ll also see how women could sometimes find themselves on the front line! We’ll set up a Treatment tent, an Officer’s tent, and look at

authentic medical paraphernalia from the period. You’ll also learn about the casualty evacuation and play the role of stretcher bearers. Takes place at

WARHAMMER

Warhammer 40K - Humanity is beset on all sides by the forces of chaos, undead robots and alien creatures. Take control of an army and use your model

You have seen it on TV, wanted to have a go….now is your chance! Welcome to the UK’s first Ultimate Wipeout course, situated in Bideford, North

Devon. The course is designed with a range of action packed water and land based obstacles to challenge and test all ages and abilities. Activities

include "The Ultimate Assault Ride the water slides, take on the ‘big balls’ and scale the travellator. The "Awesome 4 Some" is a new take on 4 of our

classic activities - the High Ropes, Climbing Wall, Jacob's Ladder and Zip Wire. All of the activities in the Awesome 4 Some has been designed to

challenge participants whilst remaining fun, adrenaline packed, exciting and above all safe. An action packed adventure experience not to be missed!
