We can help you dispose of old Flags properly... Beginning this month and continuing through December 1, 2011, the South Holland Public Library will have a receptacle for people to drop off their old flags. The members of Post 1070 in Thornton will then collect and dispose of the flags per the regulations of the Flag Code. As you display your flags, particularly as we look ahead to the tenth anniversary of September 11, examine their condition, and if necessary, drop them off at the library for a dignified disposal. The United States Flag Code exists to explain the proper means of not only displaying the flag, but also instructions for its proper disposal. One of the duties assumed by the American Legion has been to collect and dispose of tattered and soiled flags. Our Flag is possibly the most iconic symbol of the United States. It can inspire pride when displayed in a holiday parade, relief when seen as a source of help during a disaster, or contemplative silence when viewed adorning rows of headstones set in the manicured lawns of Arlington. Flying an American flag is one symbol that can be shared by government and private citizen. Volume X Issue VIII Director’s Corner A big change occurred in our Library on July 1st, although few noticed. It was the launch date for Reaching Across Illinois Library System (RAILS), a merger of the 5 former library systems that served the northern half of the state creating a new system that preserves services reaching 27,000 square miles of residents. Our former system, Metropolitan Library System (MLS), combined with DLS, ALS, PALS and NSLS. A similar merger took place in the southern portion of Illinois. Streamlining administration and staff is the way libraries are helping Illinois save money while preserving essential services for you, our library patrons. The key services of book delivery between libraries and the ability to borrow from other libraries (what we call “inter-library loan” and “reciprocal borrowing”) and an online patron access catalog of all these libraries’ holdings are preserved. What has been taken away is continuing education and consulting. Those staff requirements are being filled by smaller local groups of libraries getting together to offer staff continuing education classes. What is gained is a lower cost to the cash-strapped Illinois State government and easier communication and, hopefully cooperation, among a much larger number of libraries. South Holland Public Library is happy to see that the transition is working and we are continuing to be able to offer superior services. Thank you to all of you who supported our library during the period of uncertainty about continuing inter-library loan and our other services. You are part of the hard work that formed RAILS and what we hope will be our great future ! 16250 Wausau Avenue South Holland, IL 60473 Phone: (708) 331-5262 Fax: (708) 331-6557 E-Mail: Library Hours Monday - Thursday: 10:00 am to 9:00 pm Friday: 10:00 am to 6:00 pm Saturday: 10:00 am to 5:00 pm Closed on Sundays Your library is always open at SouthHollandLibrary.org facebook.com/shlibrary South Holland Public Library August 2011 [email protected]

The United States Flag Code exists to explain the proper means of not only displaying the flag, but also instructions for its proper disposal. One of the duties

assumed by the American Legion has been to collect and dispose of tattered and soiled flags. Our Flag is possibly the most iconic symbol of the United States. It can inspire pride when displayed in a holiday parade, relief when seen as a source

of help during a disaster, or contemplative silence when viewed adorning rows of headstones set in the manicured lawns of Arlington. Flying an American flag is one

The Digital Age has come to South Holland Public Library. We are expanding the ways that you can use the library and obtain stories, editorials on contemporary events, histories, science, entertainment and other “information.” Look at our website’s On Line Resources page that lists Media on Demand for free access to downloadable ebooks, audio books, music and video. Just below and a click away are articles, newspapers, and magazines that are all online. We also offer 11 different on-line book clubs to join. You can now choose a book club that specializes in Good News, Pre-Publication, Classics, Mystery, Romance, Horror, Science Fiction, Business and more. You may also choose from popular book clubs from around the country - Oprah’s Book Club or Book Chatter or Wired for Books, for example. These are found on our website, through the Adult Services page, then click on Reader’s Advisory. So remember, even when the library building is closed or you are away on vacation, we are still available to you via our website: www.southhollandlibrary.org.
