DYNAMICS OF ABUSEBy Chaplain Everett M. Peterson
Anyonecanbeavictimofdomesticviolence.ThereisNO“typicalvictim.” Victims of domestic violence come from all walks oflife, varying age groups, all backgrounds, all communities, alleducationlevels, alleconomiclevels, allcultures, allethnicities, allreligions, allabilities, andalllifestyles.
Victims of domestic violence do not bring violence uponthemselves,theydonotalwayslackself-confidence,noraretheyjust as abusive as the abuser. Violence in relationships occurswhen one person feels entitled to power and control over theirpartnerandchoosestouseabusetogainandmaintainthatcontrol. In relationshipswhere domestic violence exists, violence is notequal,evenifthevictimfightsbackorinstigatesviolenceineffortdiffuseasituation.Thereisalwaysonepersonwhoistheprimary,constantsourceofpower,control,andabuseintherelationship.
Every relationship differs, butwhat ismost commonwithin allabusiverelationshipsisthevaryingtacticsusedbyabuserstogainandmaintainpowerandcontrolover thevictim.Nearly3 in10women and 1 in 10men in theUnitedStates have experiencedrape, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner[or former partner] and reported at least one impact related toexperiencing these or other forms of violent behavior in therelationship(i.e.,feelingfearful,concernforsafety,post-traumaticstressdisorder(PTSD),needforhealthcare,injury,crisissupport,needforhousingservices,needforvictimadvocacyservices,needforlegalservices,missedworkorschool).
Physical and sexualassaults,or threats tocommit them, are themost apparent forms of domestic violence and are usually theactionsthatmakeothersawareoftheproblem. However, regularuseofotherabusivebehaviorsbytheabuser, whenreinforcedbyoneormore acts of physical violence, makesup a larger scopeofabuse.Althoughphysicalassaultsmayoccuronlyoccasionally, they instill fearoffutureviolentattacksandallowtheabuser tocontrolthevictim’slifeandcircumstances.
If you look up on Google the (power and control wheel) and(post-separationpowerandcontrolwheel)areparticularlyhelpfultools inunderstanding theoverallpatternofabusiveandviolentbehaviorsusedbyabuserstoestablishandmaintaincontrolovertheirpartnersbothwithinandfollowingarelationship.Veryoften, oneormoreviolentincidentsareaccompaniedbyanarrayoftheseother types of abuse. They are less easily identified, yet firmlyestablishapatternofintimidationandcontrolintherelationship.

Domestic violence affects all aspects of a victim’s life. Whenabuse victims are able to safely escape and remain free fromtheirabuser, theyoftensurvivewith long-lastingandsometimespermanenteffectstotheirmentalandphysicalhealth;relationshipswithfriends,family,andchildren;theircareer;andtheireconomicwell-being.

Lt. Nate Sarver extinguishes a fire that had spread into nearby trees on Sept. 28. It seems wind-blown embers from a small burn pile ignited a pile of good salvage wood from a torn down barn and was heading into the tree line when firefighters arrived at the home on Burr Oak Rd.
