The Stadthuyswas built in 1645and is believed to

be the oldestDutch building in

the East.

the Portuguese admiral, alfonso d’albuquerque, builtPorta de Santiago or a’Famosa in 1511. However, thisfortress was badly damaged during the dutch invasionin 1641. Fortunately, Sir Stamford raffles, a Britishofficial, intervened in 1808 and saved what remains ofa’Famosa today. this famous landmark is located nearSt. Paul’s Church.

StadtHUYSMelak a tengah

the Stadthuys is the most imposing relic of the dutchrule in Melaka. it features salmon red walls, heavywooden doors and wrought-iron hinges. once theofficial residence of the dutch governors and theirofficers, it now houses the Museum of History andethnography. next to it is Christ Church, a dutchreformed Church that was constructed in 1753.

The Melaka Sultanate Palace was builtbased on the descriptions provided in theMalay Annals, a literary work thatchronicles the history of the sultanate

of Melaka.

BaBa and nYonYaHeritage MUSeUMMelak a tengah

this building is typical of the 19th century Baroque-style homes of wealthy Chinese families. Furnished withChinese rosewood furniture with a mix of Chinese,Victorian and dutch designs, this longish residence hasan interior that opens into a courtyard that admits sunand rain. this museum was the ancestral home of threegenerations of a Baba nyonya family and is situatedalong Jalan tun tan Cheng Lock.

Jonker Street or Jalan Hang Jebat is interspersed withantique shops selling an interesting array of authenticartefacts and relics. Some date as far back as 300 yearsand can be found among a host of interestingcollectibles, each with its own history and mystery.Located in the older section of the city, Jonker Street ispopular among bargain hunters and antique collectors.

the Maritime Museum is housed in a replica of the Florde la Mar, a Portuguese vessel that sank off the coast ofMelaka. the museum has pictorial displays of the historyof Melaka, beginning from the Sultanate of Melaka in the14th century to the pre-independence era. inside themuseum are models of ships, authentic maps, charts andold iron chests that were once used to store preciouscargo.

Getting HereBy Airthose arriving at the Kuala Lumpur international airportcan take a taxi or bus to Melaka. the Melaka internationalairport is located in Batu Berendam, 10km from MelakaCity.

By Roadthe north-South expressway runs through the state andprovides easy access to its attractions, which are locatednear the Simpang ampat, ayer Keroh and Lipat Kajangexits. Melaka Sentral, the new bus and taxi terminal inPeringgit, is roughly 6km from the city. the terminal alsohouses a shopping arcade and bazaar.

By Seathere are ferry services from Melaka to dumai,Pekan Baru and Bengkalis in Sumatera daily. the MelakaMarina Complex in Kota Laksamana is a new stopoverdestination for cruise ships.

By RailMalayan railway or Keretapi tanah Melayu Berhad(KtMB) operates regular services from various parts ofthe country to tampin and vice versa. You can take a taxior bus from the tampin station, which is 38km fromMelaka City.

Witness the ingenuity and creativity of ancientcraftsmen in this architectural masterpiece, which wasbuilt without the use of nails or screws. Constructed atthe turn of the 20th century, it was the officialresidence of the royal family until 1931. This formerpalace has 99 pillars, each soaring 65 feet,representing the 99 warriors of various clans. In 1992,it was turned into a museum, which showcases theregalia of the Negeri Sembilan Royal Family as well asexhibits such as costumes, ceremonial weaponry, bedchambers and documents on the Royal Lineage.

By RailKeretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) or MalayanRailway offers regular train services to the state. It alsoprovides the daily KTM Komuter service from the KLSentral Station to Seremban and the smaller towns ofNilai, Batang Benar, Labu as well as Tiroi, at frequentintervals.

Getting HereBy Airapart from kuala lumpur and other parts of thepeninsula, Johor is also accessible from Sabah andSarawak by air. You can fly from Johor to severaldestinations in malaysia from the Sultan ismail airport inSenai, 32km from Johor Bahru.

By RoadJohor Bahru is 220km or a three-hour drive from kualalumpur via the north-South Expressway. Both the Johor-Singapore Causeway and the Second link Expresswayconnect Singapore to Johor as well as the rest of thepeninsula. over 40 international airlines fly into the country whilethe national carrier, malaysia airlines, has a globalnetwork that spans six continents. it is complementedby the budget airline airasia. the main entry point bysea is at port klang, about 50km away from kualalumpur. malaysia is also accessible by rail and road fromSingapore and thailand.
