In the past, Cleveland and Rio Rancho High had separate pageants and their own native royalty. But this year, the committee decided to recognize one student district wide as “Miss Indian RRPS.” The pageant was open to students from Cyber Academy, Independence High School, Cleveland High School and Rio Rancho High School. Five young ladies met the qualifications to run for Miss Indian RRPS. Criteria for earning the title was stringent: Contestants must be Native or Indigenous (1/8 tribal affiliation); have knowledge of Native Language and Traditions; have a cumulative GPA of 2.5; perform a talent; write an essay on the platform she will carry out during her reign; obtain two letters of recommendation as well as peer/ community signatures of support. Judges included Mayor Greggory Hull, Miss Indian New Mexico Janessa Bowekaty and Miss Indian UNM Caitlynn Mayhew. There were five contestants and the title of Miss Indian RRPS went to Amaya Huskey from RRHS and the Jr. Miss Indian RRPS (1st runner up) is Jessica Sanchez from CHS. December 7 School Board meeting, 5:30pm December 18 Independence High School Winter Graduation, 6pm, District Office Board Room December 21-January 5 Winter Break: All schools closed; district office closed December 25-January 5. Raising Steel! Construction of the RRPS Transportation Center is moving ahead, with curbs and gutters being constructed. In addition, the overall structure of the facility is beginning to take shape. The two buildings will house the Student Transportation Department’s operations and its school bus maintenance facility. The district is vacating its old, leased facility, which it has long since outgrown. Moving the Center into a district-owned venue will save the district approximately 90K per year in rent and property taxes. Seventy-five buses transport more than 10,000 students safely to and from school each day. The Brain Injury Council of NM spoke to all kindergarten and first-grade classes at Martin Luther King Elementary. All students received a fitted helmet to take home. The presentation focused on wearing their helmets on their bikes and the importance of protecting their brain. District Seeks Renewal of Capital Improvements Levy This February, Rio Rancho voters will be asked to renew their support for the two- mill levy that funds public and charter school facility maintenance and technology. The New Mexico Legislature established this mechanism to enable districts and charter schools to take care of routine maintenance – fixing plumbing, heating, computer replacement, etc. – without having to tap into operational dollars that pay for classroom teaching and learning. Voters first authorized the two-mill levy for Rio Rancho schools in 1994, and must re-approve it every six years. Passage of the measure continues the levy already in place and will not increase tax rates. Additional details about the two-mill levy and the election, including polling locations, will be published in the January Pathways and Partnerships. Early voting begins the second week of January and the election is scheduled for February 6th. X MARKS THE SPOT: More than 600 student and 100 adult volunteers celebrated the 2017 BIG EVENT community service project by forming an X to symbolize the 10th edition of the project.
