FROM THE PASTOR :

My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

When Bishop Pilla asked me to become the pastor of St. Gregory the Great in 2004, I was immediately impressed with the high quality of our Parish School. Along with the regular curriculum, I noticed that we also had superb science and computer labs. Later I came to know of the extracurricular activities such as the sports program, the drama club, music and art. As a priest, I was particularly impressed with the level of knowledge that our children had of the Faith. Building on the strong foundation established by the Notre Dame Sisters, the school has continued to provide the highest quality of education.

This past year Bishop Lennon asked me to be the pastor of the newly formed Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish. I was delighted to take the assignment knowing of the hard work of so many to maintain the excellence of both St. Margaret Mary and St. Gregory the Great Parishes. I was also very happy to once again be part of the excellent education of our children. Building on the strong foundation of St. Gregory the Great School, while remembering the tradition of St. Margaret Mary School, Sacred Heart of Jesus Academy continues the same mission. Our dedicated teachers and staff continue to bring excellence to the Heights area.

I invite you to come and see all the wonderful things happening at Sacred Heart of Jesus Academy. There will be an open house this Sunday from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. Whether you have a child in the school or not, come and see the great things that are happening. The Academy is an important part of the mission of the parish. As parishioners, I invite you to see the work of our children.

Once again, we apologize for any discomfort that you may have experienced in church last weekend. There was a major failure in one of the pumps that bring heat into the church. It was working on Friday, but when we opened the church on Saturday morning for the 6:45 a.m. Mass, we noticed the problem. Although great efforts went into fixing the system, parts could not be obtained on Saturday. In fact, the parts did not arrive until Wednesday. We thank you for your patience and understanding. Thanks to Dan, A.J. and Matt for their hard work in getting things up and running.

This past Sunday and Monday I was in Washington, D.C. for the March for Life. I traveled with Deacon Chordas, parishioners and students from Sacred Heart of Jesus, as well as some of the students of the Lyceum, and some folks from the neighboring parishes, to this important event. If you saw any of the coverage on EWTN or some of the other networks, you noticed what an impressive stand this was for life. I would like to thank, in a special way, Deacon Chordas, Barb Latini, Rita Krebs and the entire Respect Life Committee of our parish for their efforts.

In honor of St. Blaise, throats will be blessed after all of the Masses next weekend. Candles for home use, which were blessed on Candlemas Day, will be available for a donation of $3.00 after the Masses as well.

May God’s blessings be yours this week.

SCRIPTURE REFLECTION . . .

Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time

One of the units in junior high social studies curriculum is learning how a bill becomes a law. Basic governmental literacy rests on an understanding of the process, from the bill's introduction, through amendments and votes, to its final disposition for a signing or veto. We can all probably picture the chart that was in our textbook with the arrows that led the bill on different paths depending on the result of each step in the process. Even then, that chart was a simplified version of how things actually take place in the present legislative process.

The laws we're presented with in today's Gospel have very little in common with the laws that are enacted through legislation. The lawgiver in today's text is Jesus. He presents the beatitudes (and other laws, which we'll hear about in the coming weeks) in the Sermon on the Mount.

Matthew presents Jesus as the new teacher and lawgiver, now standing in the place of Moses who brought the tablets of the law ~ the Ten Commandments ~ down from Mt. Sinai. Jesus now gives the Eight Beatitudes as the law for the Christian life, a way of acting in the world. You'll hear a lot of people talk about the Ten

Commandments as a basis for law. Even some Christian preachers will speak out about the necessity of having them posted in public places.

Yet the New Testament, in Matthew's Gospel, makes it clear that there is a new law ushered in by Jesus who begins his own catalogue of commands with, "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven" (Mt 5:3).

Like the recollection of that chart from junior high social studies, I suspect that most of us could get through reciting the Ten Commandments, at least by naming the subject of each one even if we couldn't recite them word for word. But how many of us can recite the Christian law: the Eight Beatitudes?

On Wednesday, February 2, the Church celebrates the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord. Many Catholics also refer to this day as Candlemas Day, a time to celebrate Christ as the Light of the World. Blessed candles for home use will be available for a donation of $3.00 per package after all Masses next weekend and at the Parish Office. Thursday, February 3, Feast of St. Blaise, physician; Bishop of Sebaste, Armenia; healer of men and animals.

According to legend, sick animals would come to him on their own for help, but would never disturb him at prayer. While imprisoned for the practice of his faith, Blaise ministered to and healed fellow prisoners, including saving a child choking on a fish bone who was brought to him. Belief in this healing led to the practice of blessing of throats on Blaise’s feast day.

Throats will be blessed after the regularly scheduled Masses on Thursday and after all of the Masses next weekend.

THIS WEEK ’S FEASTS & CELEBRATIONS

FAMILY PERSPECTIVES . . .

In today’s Gospel, Jesus gives us a formula if we want blessings upon our family. The need for control, power and selfishness must give way to fair treatment, forgiveness, peace and love for even the weakest member.

A blessing is more than a prayer, it’s the result of a life well lived.
