Precious MemoriesReflections of His LifeThe life of Roy Charles Hammond, better known as the The Legendary Roy “C”,

the singer, song writer, music producer, music publisher, and record label owner

Roy Charles Hammond was born August 3, 1939, in Newington, Georgia, to the late George and Annie Joy Hammond. He gracefully departed this life on Wednesday evening, September 16, 2020, around 5:30 p.m., at his home with his wife and his three daughters by his side. Roy was married to his wife, Eddie Bernice, for fifty-four beautiful years, and she was the love of his life. To this union, a beautiful daughter was born, Sabrina Mone’ Hammond. Roy had two daughters from two previous relationships, and he loved all three of his princesses. Roy loved his family and loved family gatherings. Roy “C” grew up in a religious home, and everyone went to church on Sunday. He started out like many others, singing gospel songs in the Baptist Church. He didn’t attend church much as an adult, but he was a God-fearing man. He often said that church was in his heart. Roy believed strongly in God and worked to do God’s will by helping anyone in need, talking, and comforting people who needed someone to talk to, and visiting the sick. He never forgot the young people, whom he felt needed someone to show them the right way and to tell them to stay away from drinking, drugs, and ungodly people. Roy was a good and decent man and a well-read man, ready to speak on any subject.

As a young boy growing up in Newington, Georgia, Roy had big dreams and goals. He often listened to boxing matches on the radio and was fascinated by them. From his love of boxing, grew his dream to pursue a career in boxing and one day become the heavyweight champion of the world. In his teen years, Roy left Georgia for New York City to start boxing training. Roy trained well and thought that he was closer to his goal of becoming a boxer until he was put in the ring to spar with a trainer named Hurricane Jackson. Roy received a hard blow to the face and decided to change course. He gave up boxing and met a singing group called the Genies, who needed a tenor singer, and Roy fit the bill; he was just the right person. The Genies had a hit record called “Who’s That Knocking” that landed Roy on TV, performing on “American Bandstand” and many famous stages in the United States and Canada.

After leaving the Genies, Roy decided to sing solo. He then became Roy “C” and formed his own record label, “Alaga Records”. His first recording was “Shotgun Wedding” and was a hit in the United States and abroad. That hit record took Roy to England twice to perform. Roy turned down other overseas engagements, because he had his record company to run. Roy then created the masterpiece, “Impeach the President” that would change the Hip Hop industry forever. The famous “Impeach The President” drum beat is one of the most sampled beats in Hip Hop history. Roy “C” loved the music business and was a hard worker in the business for more than fifty years. He was a perfectionist when it came to his music. The sound and beat had to be just right, or he was not going to sing to it. There were times at rehearsal he would literally drive the band members to the point of wanting to put their instruments down, but they kept pushing to get it right. When they got it right, Roy would let them know; then everyone was happy. The drummer knew to keep that timing right or in the “pocket,” as Roy called it. Roy put a lot of emphasis on his drum beats and horn lines. I often heard him say that he could sing his best when he could feel the music.

After running his business in New York for many years, Roy “C” moved his business to Allendale, South Carolina, in 1988. He enjoyed the slower pace and quieter lifestyle, plus the good old Southern hospitality. Roy enjoyed living and working here in Allendale and built his permanent home here. He met and got to know some family members, as well as many other people of the town.

Special thanks to nephew, Johnny Ray Stewart, and wife, Vanessa Stewart. Words cannot express my appreciation for your sincere love and support during this difficult time. You went that extra mile. You were really “Johnny on the spot.”

Roy “C” has many, many loyal fans here in the United States and abroad. He enjoyed pleasing them all through his music. Just like his family and friends, I know his many fans will miss him, too. Roy “C”, The Legend, is gone, but he will live on forever through his music. Roy was loved dearly by his family and will be missed.

Our Life Journey Life is like a journey. Some journeys are long, and some

journeys are short, and we don’t always understand why. I can truly say, my dear husband, that you made this journey really special for us. We weathered all the storms of life together, and it made us stronger. Fifty-

four years is a long time on this journey of life, but I must say, my dear husband, no matter how long it

could have been, it never would have been long enough. I thank God for allowing us to travel this journey

together. I will love you and miss you for the rest of my life. Rest In Peace, my beloved husband.

Thank you for the Beautiful Journey.

Your Loving Wife

A Different World Dad, “a different world” were the words you spoke, and now you have journeyed there.

Dad, we want you to find a world of peace, joy, and love that will comfort and warm you like the glow of the morning sun. We were here, Dad, and we watched you leave. You left us without words, without even a good-bye. We were not ready for you to leave us, so we had a hard time understanding, but we had to accept that your time had come to go. Our hearts broke in that moment, and a piece of us went with you. We have known you to be a man of many words, which we had grown used to hearing, yet on that day, you could not explain

to us your feelings, so you blinked to show the love as tears fell from your eyes and your last breath came from your lips. We know that you needed to rest, Dad, which now, in that

different world, you can. Like a guardian angel, we will always feel your smile, the love of your heart to guide your three daughters as we continue on in life. We were so fortunate to be present during your final days and hours. We will remember how you cared for us

through the years in so many ways. We will continue to be the strong women you taught us to be. We salute you, Dad. Job well done. We will pass the love and knowledge you gave us

to our children and our children’s children. The memories of you will always remain in our minds, as your spirit will forever fill our hearts. If we could have had you forever,

our days would be less lonely.

We love you, Dad. Your loving daughters...Sabrina, Glendina, and Deborah
