in Itman, West Virginia, since I was born in 1950. She passed away in 1996. My

father passed away in 1987. He entered the Army Air Corps in 1945 and retired from

the Air Force in 1965. He served in Korea during the war and was an air traffic

controller. He met my mother, Gladys Ellen Smith from Echols County, Georgia,

while he was stationed at Moody Air Force Base, Valdosta, Georgia, in 1948. I am

trace back to Montgomery Co., N.Y. Jacob was reportedly born in the Mohawk Valley.

He died in 1836 in Yates, Orleans Co., N.Y.,no grave has been found. I have not

definitely identified him prior to 1830. Their are several BORDINE descendants

Comments: MARY SUTFIN AUSTIN-Statistician Mary Sutfin Austin, 90, a retired statistician with the

Bureau of Public Roads, died of cancer and heart ailment

Feb 7 in her home at Asbury Methodist Village in

Gaithersburg.

Mrs Austin was born in Grand Rapids, Mich., and came to

Washington in 1918 to work in the office of the Adjutant

General of the Army. She joined the Bureau of Public

records during the 1920's, then during the 1930's left to

work as a secretary for the Red Cross.

Later she returned to the B of PR, where she remained until

retiring in the early 1960's. In retirement Mrs Austin and

her husband, Henry Warner Austin, took a 1.5 year trip

around the world, then lived in Berkeley, Calif., and Mexico.

She returned to this area when he died around 1970.

Mrs. Austin had been a member of the New York Avenue

Presbyterian Church in Washington, DC and was active in

the twentieth Century Club and Common Cause.

Survivors include one son, Dr. John Austin of Arlington; two

daughters, Nan Austin Doggett of Frederick and Mary Ann

Harlan of Sante Fe, NM; 11 grandchildren and four great-

page 984: Hiram Titsworth, b1788, Sussex Co, NJ, mrd in

1808, came to Lake Country1812, above Eddytown, south

of Richard Lanning, 340 acres, d 1861. He was drafted into

the war of 1812, and hired John S> SUTPHEN to go to the

fields as his substitute. He was one of the founders of the

Pres. church at Eddytown.


Nicholas VanZandt was born in Bloomsburg, NJ, in 1772

and died in Potter, in 1858. His wife, Ida SUTPHIN, of New

Jersey, was born in Seneca Co. and in 1815, on west lot 8,

range four, in Potter, now known as the Barber

Neighborhood. They had ten children and two more were

born inthis town. They were: Garrett, Lucretia, Anna,

Maria, Margaret, Jecheliah, Lydia, Jane, Amy, Garnetta,

Isaac and Samuel

Garret b 1798, mrd Charity Stout in 1814 they settled in

this town and had seven children: Henry, Betsy A,

Margaret, John, Jane, Nicholas and Ida. Garret was a

soldier in war of 1812, lives in Indiana.

Lucretia b 1795, mrd John Wheeland in 1870. They lived in

Ovid and their children were: Ida, Jeremiah and Garrett.

She mrd 2nd husb, John Price of Livonia, NY (abt ten miles

from Avon, NY)

Jonathan S. Barber b 1825, mrd Sarah A. Price of Livonia,

NY. They lived on the Barber homestead on Lot 8, Fourth

farm range.

Note: Potter-half the original town of Agusta, later called

Middlesex was embraced in Potter, erected in April 26,

1832 per Perley Howe's old Map as "Mill Brook". According

to 1789 survey and 1790 census, seven families

enumerated in township 8 of 2nd range "Potter Place".

Bennetts settlement(south end) which is now known as

Dundee. Reeder's Corner, now known as Starkey. The book

by

Cleveland "History of Yates county, NYS" is a story in itself.

Copies are rare and ref

only. Acouple are available thru Historical Soc/Museums in

the Yates area. Validity of material rests with the author of

the book, JLS only transcribing for all use.

Comments: I found two tintype photographs with the name written on the back “John Sutphen Clark”. I have a hobby of placing

old photographs either with a family or geographically. At

first I thought the middle name was Stephen because I had

never heard of Sutphen as a first or surname. Now that I

see it is a surname it’s possible that it was his mother’s

maiden name. Is it also used as a first or middle name?

Does anyone have any information on this fellow? His age

is 20 on the earlier photograph. From dating the

photograph and his clothes and other cues in the photo he

was probably born between 1840-1850 but not before 1836

and most likely not after 1850. Any help you can give me

on this man or the name Sutphen is appreciated. Ken Brock
