With the coming of the Christmas season, I start to reminisce. I’m thankful for the individu-als and families whose lives I have touched and those who have touched mine. As funeral pro-fessionals, we are a unique group of individuals who are given the awesome task of caring for the dead and comforting those who mourn. We have taken on this sacred obligation with its sac-rifices to fulfill the purpose for which God has placed us on this earth.

I have thank-you cards and letters that have been sent to me over the years from families I have served. I am sure you receive those too. Going back and just re-reading those messages bring back memories. As some are read, the memories of that service come to mind, and it is relived all over again — like the singing of “You Are My Sunshine” at the graveside of a 3-year-old or comforting a mom at the casket of her young son, killed in an auto accident in another state. I will never forget that call on a Saturday afternoon. She simply said, “Get my baby home.” Our paths cross sometimes when Christmas shop-ping. We exchange a hug and fill each other in on our families. She always says thanks for taking care of Dylan. I remember Grannie, her rocking chair and quilt at the front of the church remind-ing the congregation of her love for children and how she was in the nursery every Sunday. One special lady was Ms. Ester, as we called her. She brought her special pineapple cake to us after her husband died, and all of us enjoyed every bite. He was a retired minister, and, at his visitation, we had folks seated in the chapel and lined up in the lobby forming the visitation line. Of course, Ms. Ester was allowing all in line as they came

to her to share and hug as much as they wanted. After many hours, I moved gen-tly behind her and, touch-ing her shoulder, whispered in her ear, “Ms. Ester, if we don’t move these folks along, we will be here at breakfast.” She turned to me, smiled and said, “Well, darling, I will have scrambled eggs, sausage and toast.” With that we both laughed and gave each other a hug, and I told her to carry on. It was one of those long nights that we have sometimes, as you all are well aware. She has since died, but her sweet memory still lives on in her special card and the taste of her pineapple cake.

Our calling is unique; we serve families and are able to enjoy friendships for years. Some we serve once and never see again. We also are not immune to death. This year, I lost my men-tor, my trainer and the special person that I was blessed to serve my apprenticeship with. If there was ever a person with the power of presence, it was Crafton. The most challenging situations would become peaceful when he took charge. It was an honor to be his student. When the name Crafton Hudson appeared on the screen at this year’s NFDA Memorial Service in Austin, the industry had lost a special person, along with all the others honored.

Each one of you is special in your own way. You are special to your family and to those who love you. You are special to the families you serve in this profession. You are special to this Academy. It is an honor to serve with you.

Hutcheson has taught grief psychology and restor-ative art for more than 25 years at Gupton-Jones College of Funeral Service. She was named president of the college in 2000. She holds an Associate of Arts degree from Truett-McConnell College, an Associ-ate of Science degree from Gupton-Jones College of Funeral Service and Bachelor and Master of Arts degrees in English from the University of West Georgia.

Hutcheson is a Georgia-licensed funeral director and embalmer and a Certified Funeral Service Prac-titioner, and she is past president of the American Board of Funeral Service Education. She and her husband, Danny, own Hutcheson’s Memorial Cha-

pel and Crematory in Buchanan, Georgia, which they started in 1983. Danny served on the APFSP Board of Trustees and is a past president of the Academy. Their daughter, Kathryn, and son-in-law, Chase Croft, are also licensed funeral directors and embalmers working in the family business. Hutcheson is active in her church, Buchanan United Methodist Church, serving as lay leader and Sunday school teacher and is a certified lay speaker in the North Georgia Conference. She was elected to the Buchanan City Council in 2011.

The APFSP Executive Director Search Committee is very pleased to announce its selection for executive director. Patty S. Hutcheson, CFSP, of Buchanan, Georgia, has been appointed to serve as executive director of the Academy of Professional Funeral Service Practice. The Search Committee was comprised of the entire Board of Trustees and Past Presidents John “Jay” Rhodes, CFSP, and Diana Duksa Kurz, CFSP.

The Board of Trustees met in September in Columbus, Ohio, for a full-day stra-tegic planning meeting and its annual Board of Trustees Meeting. The Executive Director Search Committee, comprised of the entire board and past presidents Diana Duksa Kurz, CFSP and John S. “Jay” Rhodes, CFSP, met for the first few hours of the strategic planning meeting to narrow its selection of candidates for the executive director position. Then, Valerie Wages, CFSP, facilitated a lively discussion about how the trustees intend to grow the Academy during the next few years.

Following the strategic planning meet-ing, the Annual Board Meeting was held to discuss the business operations of the Academy. With attendance at the ICCFA and NFDA conventions, as well as the suc-cess of the Recommend-a-Colleague cam-paign, our membership has experienced a sizable level of growth.

President Bill Joyner closed the meeting by thanking the Board members for their service and saying, “I consider it a privilege and honor to work with each and every

one of you.” On behalf of the entire Board, Bob Parks thanked Bill for the integrity and transparency he has led the Board with during this year and through the transition of hiring the new executive director.

Two separate and very generous gifts were made to the Legacy Foundation honoring our former executive director, Kimberly Gehlert, for her service to the

Academy. APFSP Secretary/Treasurer John T. McQueen, CFSP, made a donation in the amount of $2,500 at the Annual Board of Trustees meeting in Columbus, Ohio, on September 14, 2013. The Board of Trustees recognized Kimberly at the Annual CFSP Recognition in Austin, Texas, on October 21, 2013, by making another donation with the intention of establishing a scholarship in her name.

The Academy Board of Trustees adopt-ed a resolution to establish the Legacy Endowment Fund, which will accept donations from all eligible sources for the purpose of promoting education in funeral service and mortuary science. The Board of Trustees of the Academy will grant scholarships and make bequests from the income, appreciation and any other earn-ings generated by the Legacy Endowment Fund for the purpose of funding mortuary science and funeral-service education for mortuary science students and funeral service practitioners.

John W. Evans, CFSP, has recently been honored as a Legacy Fellow in the Academy of Professional Funeral Service Practice Legacy Endowment Fund for his gen-erosity and commitment to continuing education and lifelong learning.

John is a Lifetime member of the Academy and the owner of the Evans Funeral Home in Norwalk, Ohio. He is the

immediate past president of the Ohio Funeral Directors Association and is very active in his community. John holds degrees from the University of Redlands and Cypress College, both in California.

Scores of white flowers with handwritten notes were placed on the angel statue at West Meadow Cemetery in Newington, Connecticut, as part of the 2013 Cherish

Our Children Walk. On Sunday, September 29, hundreds of people from around the state joined together to remember the babies and children of all ages whom they love and lost. The 13th annual walk was sponsored by the Duksa family and staff at Newington Memorial Funeral Home, Burritt Hill Funeral Home in New Britain and Fisette-Batzner Funeral Home in Newington.

On the sunny fall day, walkers followed a bagpiper from New-ington Memorial Funeral Home through Newington Center to the nearby angel statue for a short Cherish Our Children Walk remembrance program that included music and a release of white doves. Attendees heard words of support from Jon Reik, a triathlete and lawyer from West Hartford who himself is coping with the loss of his daughter. Then, as the names of children to be remembered were read aloud, families and friends placed flowers with cards bearing the names of their loved ones and personal notes at the statue. Also featured was a special remembrance of the lives lost at Newtown’s Sandy Hook Elementary School with the addition of 26 new paver bricks next to the statue.

In 2002, the Duksa family, their funeral homes and a non-profit organization comprised of bereaved parents installed the 10-foot-tall bronze angel statue to honor the memory of deceased Connecticut children of any age. The statue was inspired by the internationally acclaimed book The Christmas Box and has become a place where bereaved parents, family and friends come to reflect and find hope. A special service was held at the angel statue on Friday, December 6.

Lacy Robinson, CFSP, of Aurora, Indiana, was appointed to serve on the Board of Trustees of the Academy of Professional Funeral Service Practice for a term of five years on October 30, 2013.

Lacy is a licensed funeral director/embalmer in the state of Kentucky and was recognized for earning her Certified Funeral Service Prac-titioner (CFSP) designation in June 2007. She is a graduate of Georgetown College, holding a bachelor’s degree in communica-tions. She is also a graduate of Mid-America College of Funeral Service. As director of professional development for Aurora Casket Company, Lacy oversees the creation and development of professional development

and training programs for Aurora customers. She regularly presents continuing education programs on both the local, state and national level, including NFDA, ICCFA and CANA. Lacy is adding to the Aurora continuing education offerings by developing e-learning programs for the development of funeral pro-fessionals. As an active member of the Blue-grass Toastmasters Group, Lacy has achieved the designation Competent Communicator. She is also a Certified Funeral Celebrant, a Certified Wilson Learning Facilitator and a member of the Funeral Directors Association of Kentucky. Lacy was recently named to the ICCFA Hospice Committee.

Recently, I created a help wanted ad for a support position to help me with the growth of my business and posted it to my website. Instead of the old way of posting ads with newspapers and then sifting through a stack of job-seeking tire-kickers, I wanted to elevate the relationship level to one of someone who was familiar with my work (via my web-site) or at least to get a referral — friend of a friend.

So why I am telling you this story? Well, it seems to be a topic of inter-est lately — getting good-caliber staff members — and we seem to turn to our travelling sales reps and ask them if they know of anyone looking. As funeral directors, we forget that we have a large volume of eyeballs checking out obituaries on our websites and leaving condo-lences. Why not have a “Careers” or “Job Opportunities” section on your website?

Here is a list of five reasons why you should have a careers section on your website:

1. It’s free! Nowadays, it shouldn’t cost you anything to add an addi-tional page to your website.

2. It gives visitors an insight into your company, even if someone isn’t looking for a job. Maybe someone is trying to decide what funeral home to choose, and, if you communicate in your help wanted ads that you need a certain type of person who will go above and beyond for your client families, he or she may see that as a deciding factor — attracting families through help wanted ads

3. The job-seeker will get a better understanding of your operations, since he or she is already on your website (although, if someone comes in to an interview without researching you on your website, maybe you should keep looking).

4. The referral — maybe someone has been to your website to leave a condolence, and he or she sees your Careers tab and he or she knows of someone who may be perfect for funeral service, and he or she is already familiar with your company via the website (this referral will never happen if you only used help wanted ads).

5. Good economic community member — in tough economic times like this, it is good to show that you are investing back into the com-munity — job creation (even if it is a replacement situation for you, you don’t have to tell everyone that).

I am sure that there are other benefits to posting job opportunities on your funeral-home website. Can you think of any other reasons? Send me an email, and I will add to the list.

Here are some steps that you should remember:• Let the firm’s caring, empathetic personality come out in your

ad, and describe what it is like to be a part of your team (others are reading it too)

• After the position has been filled, leave it up as a sample, and still offer to accept résumés

• Embed or link to the Lynch’s “The Undertaking” documentary video clips from YouTube or PBS; these hold the entire profession in a more positive light (to find the video on YouTube, search for “PBS FRONTLINE The Undertaking Oct 30,” or go to www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/undertaking/view/.

• Create a “footer” link to your Careers section for each page — visitors’ curiosity will make them check out what’s available

• Secret tactic: use social networking sites like Facebook, LinkedIn and even Twitter to direct people to your new job posting (OK, it’s probably not a secret; I just wanted to make sure that you didn’t forget to use social media)

So, if you are having issues hiring good-quality staff members, apply the above (no-cost) strategy to attract your next hire. Plus, it may also have a positive impact on future client families as well.
