Over 3,500 fans packed the stands at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center (PBIEC) on the opening Saturday night to

watch the women beat the men for the fifth year in a row in the $55,000 Nes-presso Battle of the Sexes at the FTI Consulting Winter Equestrian Festival (FTI WEF) in Wellington. It was the closest race yet in the three-phase com-petition between the male and female teams, but the ladies pulled out another victory in the end. Eric Hasbrouck was the course designer in the International Arena this week and set the tracks for last Satur-day’s classes. In the highlight $55,000 Nespresso Battle of the Sexes, the three-phase contest included speed rounds, match races, and six-bar competition. The women’s team was captained by

Georgina Bloomberg and also included riders Laura Kraut, Margie Engle, Mari-lyn Little, Maggie Bracco, Nicole Bellis-simo, Debbie Stephens, Brianne Goutal, Candice King, and Schuyler Riley. Charlie Jayne led the men’s team, which included riders Shane Sweet-nam, Richie Moloney, Daniel Bluman, Luis Larrazabal, Ramiro Quintana, Steve Schaefer, Darragh Kenny, Alex Granato, and Nick Skelton. The first round of competition in tonight’s Nespresso Battle of the Sexes was the speed round, with a 6 to 4 win for the men. The match races followed, with the men and women competing side by side over identical courses. The women were the winners of that round with six points over the men’s four, bringing the total team points to a ten-ten tie. The final six-bar competition would

be the deciding factor of the evening. Four men and four women returned from each team with the opportu-nity to earn two points per clear round. The competi-tion started at 1.60m (5’3”) in height and moved up to 1.80m (5’11”) through three rounds. Following the first six-bar round, only three riders

continued from each team after Maggie Bracco and Shane Sweetnam each had rails. In round two, Charlie Jayne, Laura Kraut, and Daniel Bluman all had rails. Nick Skelton was the only member of the men’s team to advance to the third round competing against Candice King and Georgina Bloomberg. The six jumps were taken down to four with the larger height, and with the men on 18 points and the women on 20, all three riders jumped clear. The final tally was

24 to 20 - a victory for the women. Captain of the winning team, Georgina Bloomberg, was thrilled to be a part of the women’s fifth consecutive victory in the event. Bloomberg was last to jump in the final round aboard her horse Highrise and gave the women the solid four-point lead. The 2013 FTI WEF runs through March 31 featuring 12 weeks of world-class competition.

The second week of competi-tion at the 2013 FTI Consult-ing Winter Equestrian Festival (FTI WEF), sponsored by The

Mar-a-Lago Club, concluded on Sunday afternoon with a win for Charlie Jacobs (USA) and CMJ Sporthorse LLC’s Flaming Star in the $30,000 Mar-a-Lago Club Grand Prix. Jumping a course set by Eric Hasb-rouck, 46 horse and rider combinations contested Sunday’s class. Thirteen entries jumped clear to advance to the jump-off, and 10 went double clear. The fastest of those clear jump-off rounds belonged to Charlie Jacobs and Flaming Star in a time of 37.163 seconds. Alvaro de Miranda (BRA) and RD Jumping Higher, Ltda.’s Show Show finished second stopping the clock in 37.413 seconds. Reed Kessler (USA) and Ligist were third with a time of 37.708 seconds. The 2013 FTI WEF runs through March 31 featuring 12 weeks of world-class competition. Visit www.equestri-ansport.com or call 561-793-5867 for more information.

George Rawlings. (ph David Lominska)

After a tough first-game 12-11 loss to an equally strong Villa del Lago, Crab Orchard was back yesterday with a superb

9-3 victory over Faraway to keep it chances alive for one of the two semifi-nal spots for Bracket I/II in the 2013 Joe Barry Memorial Cup. Next up for Crab

Orchard is Goose Creek, Goose Creek a second-time winner this week with a 10-9 victory yesterday over ERG, Kris Kampsen scoring the winning goal with seconds to go in regulation time after the two teams had battle out for the lead throughout game. A 3-time U.S. Open Polo Champion, Crab Orchard was back in 2013 after the

USPA, polo’s governing body, raised the handicap of one of its star players in 2012 right as the season started, thus making it im-possible for the team to compete that year. This time, team owner Beverly Rawlings brought to the field two great players, both former 10 goalers, Mariano Aguerre and Matias Magrini to combine with husband George Rawlings and Felipe Viana. For its first game last week, Crab Orchard was still finding its marks, though after trailing twice by several goals to Villa del Lago, the team rallied to get to within a goal, time running out for a possible tie in regulation. This time around against Far-away on the very well prepared field of Isla Carroll West, Crab Orchard was ready from the get-go, Mariano Aguerre in the best form he’s been early in this Florida season since winning the U.S. Open Polo Cham-pionship in 2005 with White Birch. Yesterday, Mariano Aguerre, hot from a superb December win in the Argentine Open with brothers-in-law Facundo, Gonzalito and Nicolas Pieres, was all over the field delivering fabulous passes to teammates Magrini, Rawlings and

Viana, or himself making runs after runs into Faraway territory with his group of very fast and handy ponies. Crab Or-chard was up 5-0 in the second chukker and 9-0 in the fourth, Faraway closing strong for a final score of 9-3. After third round games this week through Sunday with amazing games to watch, see the schedule below, the Joe Barry semifinals will be played next Thursday for a final on Sunday, Jan. 27.

Horses Healing Hearts (HHH) was proud to announce this week that the non-profit or-ganization recently received

a $25,000 grant from the FTI Great Charity Challenge. In previous years, the Great Charity Challenge has only consisted of those charities drawn for the competition--an opportunity that had always escaped HHH. The trail-blazing organization saw its luck change that Sunday, January 6, 2013. The Great Charity Challenge distrib-utes over $1 million in prizes to compet-ing charity teams. Thirty-one charities have been selected to participate in the 2013 Challenge. The night of the Trump Invitational Grand Prix, Horses Heal-ing Hearts was called and told that they were drawn as the winner of the ‘surprise grant.’ Even though Horses Healing Hearts was not selected to participate in the competition, “We ended up getting the grant,” Liz Olszewski, Founder and

Executive Director of Horses Healing Hearts smiled. “This was the first time anything like this has happened for the Great Charity Challenge.” HHH is a non-profit organization that provides an opportunity for children of alcoholics and substance abuse to work with, care for, and ride horses for the pur-pose of healing emotionally and learning coping mechanisms for the future. These children are given the opprtunity to ex-perience horses in an effot to help build confidence, trust, and self-esteem. Refering to the Great Charity night and horse shows in Wellington, HHH founder Liz Olszewski said: “They’ll re-member these things forever. They’re so inspired when they watch these events,” adding “Every year, our kids walk away asking, ‘can we be in that arena one day?’ and we answer ‘Absolutely, with a lot of hard work and dedication, you can do whatever you set your mind to.’ We’re very grateful the FTI Great Chari-ty Challenge exists - it’s just incredible.” The grant will be awarded at the jump off during the FTI Great Charity Chal-lenge on January 26th. Horses Healing Hearts is a 501 (c)3 not-for-profit organization. To learn more about Horses Healing Hearts or how you can help with donations of money or time, log onto www.HHHU-SA.org or email Liz Olszewski at [email protected] or call (561) 713-6133.

neW Place in WellinGton

Cathleen ‘Cat’ Cannon, a very popular young lady with 10 successful years at Players Club in Wellington, has just taken the reins of what once was Galipette, then Tavern on the

Green, eventually the White Horse Tavern and more recently Graffito Restaurant. The new place was remodeled with a very engaging decor and renamed Triple Bar Bistro, located adjacent to the Equestrian Showgrounds at 3401 Equestrian Club Road, under the ownership of Mike Polaski and Omar Shaikh of the SURG Restaurant Group. Originally designed in the late 80’s as the sales office for Eques-trian Estates and a sport facility, the building has endured the years very well, and is a great, classic set up for the restaurant with large rooms, a beautiful bar area and terraces looking West to a lake and in the middle distance the International Horseshow, where late afternoon drink outtings in spectacular sunsets leading into evening dining are second to none.

The place is ideal for private parties and the restaurant’s waterside location provides a lovely comfortable setting for dinner, outside on the patio under the stars, or in the screened-in veranda. Among many appetizers priced between $7 & $14, we noticed, Shock Top Cheese Curds (Shock Top Battered, Buttermil k Ranch, Honey Mustard Dipping Sauces), Lobster Crab Cakes (Maine Lobster & Super Lump Crab, Spinach & Apples, Tarragon Crème Fraiche, Waffle Chips), Tuna (Citrus Encrusted #1 Tuna, Micro Greens Salad, Citrus Vinaigrette, Smoked Almonds), and Shrimp N Grits (Creamy Stone Ground Grits, Rock Shrimp, Market Vegetables. Imaginative Entrees include, from $19 to $34: Cedar Planked Scot-tish Shetland Salmon, Grilled Swordfish, Sea Bass, Pan Seared Black Grouper and Pan Seared Day Boat Diver Scallops from the sea, and Buttermilk Fried Amish Chicken, Grilled Pastrami Spiced Pork Chop and Braised Shortribs from the land. Triple Bar Bistro is open daily from 3:00 p.m. to close. It is cur-rently available for private parties and banquets. Call for reservations (561) 333-1150.
