As far as awards go, this was a banner year for the Zoological Society of Milwaukee. Our signature conservation effort, the Bonobo & Congo Biodiversity Initiative (BCBI), received an International Conservation Award from the Association of Zoos & Aquariums. The other organization awarded for international conservation in 2017 was the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International, so you can see what a prestigious honor this was. We also were thrilled to see a longtime board member, Gina Peter, receive the Swigart Board Leadership (Board Member of the Year) Award from the Nonprofit Center of Milwaukee and our vice president of communications, marketing and membership, Robin Higgins, named a Chief Marketing Officer of the Year by the Milwaukee Business Journal.

But we also want to celebrate the day-to-day work of the Zoological Society. Our Education Department reached 325,000 children and adults in the past year through classes, camps, field trips and Kohl’s Wild Theater. That’s 325,000 people who now know more about animals, care more about conservation and understand better the work of the Zoological Society and Milwaukee County Zoo. Our Zoo Pass membership program is one of the top membership organizations in the region. I’m proud of the service we provide to our 50,000 member households and the vital support, both financial and in-kind, we provide to the Zoo. In the Democratic Republic of Congo, BCBI continued its work supporting anti-poaching patrols and studying bonobos and forest elephants. There are undoubtedly many bonobos, elephants and other wildlife in the Congo that would not be alive today without our efforts.

The Zoological Society of Milwaukee works to protect bonobos and other wildlife in the Democratic Republic of Congo through the Bonobo & Congo Biodiversity Initiative (BCBI). It also coordinates the Bonobo Species Survival Plan® to keep the captive bonobo population in North America stable and healthy.

Celebrated 20 years of studying and protecting bonobos in the Salonga National Park through surveys and research, park support and guard training, and community assistance.

Supported 54 anti-poaching patrols that destroyed 179 poaching camps, apprehended 86 poachers and confiscated 1,912 snares.

Continued to support primary schools in villages around BCBI’s patrol posts in the Salonga National Park.

Received a $110,000, two-year grant from the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service to bolster a BCBI-supported patrol post at Biondo Biondo with a focus on protecting forest elephants.

BCBI capped off its 20th anniversary year with a prestigious award from the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA). In 2016, survey teams completed four years of intensive work in the rainforests of the Salonga National Park, covering 2,600 square miles. The surveys documented a population of about 4,000 bonobos, possibly the largest unfragmented bonobo population ever discovered! In honor of this accomplishment, the AZA gave BCBI its Significant Achievement in International Conservation Award.

Grenada Frog Study:

The Grenada frog population has been decimated by an invasive frog species and a frog-killing fungus called chytrid. Zoo staff traveled to Grenada in early 2017 to continue monitoring the population as part of the Grenada Frog Conservation Action Plan.

Iguana Conservation:

Zoo staff members Dawn Fleuchaus, Stacy Whitaker and Joan Maurer travel to the Caribbean to study, monitor and care for the critically endangered Jamaican iguana and endangered Grand Cayman blue iguana. Their work, side by side with groups such as the Wildlife Conservation Society/Bronx Zoo, has paid off with improved outlooks for both animals.

Lola Ya Bonobo:

The Zoological Society sends money to Lola Ya Bonobo in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The organization takes in confiscated and orphaned bonobos and rehabilitates them, releasing some of them into a protected reserve.

Kibale National Park:

Kibale National Park boasts the highest density of primates in Africa. In an effort to save this vital forest habitat in Uganda, the Zoological Society has supported the construction of more efficient stoves and distribution of ecologically friendly fuel briquettes, reducing the need for local people to harvest firewood out of the park. 7

The Zoological Society supported Zoo staff member Joan Stasica’s travel to Namibia. While there, she and others worked with Giraffe Conservation Foundation researchers to document giraffe movement patterns,

preferred food items, reproductive success and herd composition.

The team also collected DNA samples to determine

relatedness and social patterns for the giraffes encountered.

Migratory Bird Projects

Since 2001, 183 species of birds, including 44 species of concern in Wisconsin, have been documented on Zoo grounds. Funds from the Society and the Zoo have been used to purchase products that are applied to windows, reducing deadly bird collisions. Other projects include placement

and monitoring of nest boxes used by Wisconsin native birds and wild bird feeding stations on Zoo grounds.

Milwaukee Ape Heart ProjectHeart disease is a common problem in captive great apes, and Milwaukee County Zoo veterinarians work closely with local cardiologists and sonographers to study this issue in the Zoo’s bonobos, orangutans and gorillas. This year Zoo staff continued researching the feasibility of using finger cuffs to measure blood pressure in bonobos, building on previously conducted work. These results will be used to determine the validity of this method and to better treat bonobos who show signs of hypertension.

Helped 23 children attend Zoo Summer Camps in the inaugural year of the Bernard J. Peck Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Introduced a touring Kohl’s Wild Theater musical, “Aldo Leopold & the Ghost of Sand County,” that celebrates famed Wisconsin scientist Aldo Leopold and Wisconsin’s rich conservation history. Kohl’s Wild Theater also added more at-exhibit performances at the Zoo in summer and introduced a new at-Zoo show about coltan mining and cellphone recycling, “Captain Super Fantastic & the Coltan Conundrum.”

Provided another year of outdoor learning through the Nature Play area in the Zoo’s woodlands with grant support from the Association of Zoos & Aquariums ($5,000), Child & Nature Network ($5,000) and the Natural Resources Foundation of Wisconsin-C.D. Besadny Conservation Grant Program ($1,000).

The Zoological Society’s Education Department reached 325,000 people in 2017 through Zoo Classes and Camps, school programs, community partnerships and Kohl’s Wild Theater, which performs conservation-themed theater at the Zoo and around southeastern Wisconsin free of charge, thanks to a partnership with Kohl’s Cares.

Zoo Pass members receive many benefits in addition to free admission to the Zoo, including invitations to members-only events and discounts on events, classes and camps.

The Zoological Society supports the Milwaukee County Zoo through cash and in-kind services. Half of all revenue raised by the Zoo Pass membership program goes to the Zoo in unrestricted funds to support the day-to-day operations of the Zoo. The Society provides additional funds through procurement of sponsorships for Zoo attractions and events. The Society also provides graphic design, information technology and direct project support; operates Zoo Pride, a volunteer auxiliary that serves the Society and Zoo; and is a partner with Milwaukee County on Zoo capital campaigns. The Zoological Society provided $8.4 million to the Zoo in 2017 in cash and in-kind support.

Zoo Ball 2017, presented by Dr. Bill Stathas and Judy Holz Stathas, was the party of the year with its theme of “Black Tie & Tails.” It raised more than $700,000.

Were named the top membership organization locally and number three nationally for our Zoo Pass program (50,000 member households) in a study by the Morey Group.

Exceeded our revenue goal for Zoo Pass, allowing us to provide $3.1 million in unrestricted cash support to the Zoo.

Raised $1.1 million for the Society’s mission through seven engaging fundraising events attended by more than 4,700 people. The Society’s annual gala, Zoo Ball, had one of its most successful years ever under the chairmanship of Dr. Bill Stathas and Judy Holz Stathas as we celebrated the Zoo’s 125th anniversary.

Gratefully acknowledged 54,000 hours of service from our 525 active Zoo Pride volunteers. Volunteers participate in nearly every facet of Zoo and Society operations, from assisting in education classes and events to creating enrichment items for animals to engaging guests at Zoo exhibits.

Continued to fund two veterinary residency programs in the Zoo’s Animal Health Center.

Exceeded our goal for the 2017 Annual Appeal, “Help the Herd.” Money will go toward the new elephant exhibit set to open in spring 2019.

Created more than 650 print and sign projects for the Society and Zoo, including an interactive “Grenada Conservation Station” highlighting the field conservation efforts of Zoo staff.

Thanks to donations to a previous Annual Appeal, red pandas Dash and Dr. Erin Curry got a remodeled exhibit in 2017. Money raised helped put mesh netting around the exhibit to protect the pandas from wild animals like raccoons. A new climbing structure, made with logs from Zoo trees, offers resting platforms and multiple routes around the exhibit. The structure also offers additional shade, encouraging the red pandas to spend more time outside in summer. The Zoo hopes the pair will eventually breed.

With support of a $4,250 grant from the Service Club of Milwaukee, the Creative Department created a Grenada Conservation Station in 2017 in the Aquatic & Reptile Center to highlight the work of Zoo staff in helping coral reefs, frogs and tree boas in that country.

Thrivent Mutual Funds received the Society’s Loxodonta africana (African elephant) Award, presented to a corporation or foundation that significantly supports the Zoological Society of Milwaukee and the Milwaukee County Zoo through grants and/or sponsorships.
