Page 4 Diabetic Footwear Program WSL has established a relationship with Special Care Inc. a diabetic footwear program. In opera- tion since 1990, Special Care has extensive ex- perience in servicing and providing for the indi- vidual specialized footwear needs of patients. This service is a covered item thru the Medicare Dia- betic Shoe Bill which will cover qualified patients to receive 1 pair of shoes and 3 sets of therapeutic inserts per calendar year. Therapeutic/diabetic shoes have several advantages over the standard variety in helping to prevent complications related to poor circulation, swelling, and neuropathy. Controlling these risk factors is crucial in preventing complications such as wound development and amputations. These shoes are custom molded to the foot of the patient for optimum fit and incorporate features such as a larger toe box, gait stabilizing rocker bottom, and smooth seamless interior all to avoid the problems that are be- coming commonplace for many diabetics. Having the proper shoe is especially important for those with neuropathy who would not typically notice when their shoe might be ill fitted, with their foot rubbing against the seam or side of their shoe. Please talk to Kristy if you are interested in the Diabetic Footwear Program for you or your loved one. Employee of the Month Jodel was happy to accept the honor of being WSL’s Employee of the Month for July. Jodel was chosen by her co- workers because she always shows up for work with a smile on her face and a very positive attitude. Jodel takes pride in her work and shows the ut- most respect for her coworkers and well as our residents. Jodel is al- ways willing to pitch in wherever help is needed. For being named Employee of the Month, Jodel will have the prime parking spot designated just for her, a cash bo- nus and choice of the lunch at our next staff meeting. Congratula- tions Jodel! BASS Bus Service We now have bus service to Burling- ton one day a week. The BASS Bus comes to Waterford Senior Living on Thursdays in the afternoons. It travels into Burlington and makes several stops along the way. It will stop at Wal-mart, K-mart, Pick ‘n Save, Kohls, Gooseberries, Burlington Li- brary, Sentry, and the Burlington Clinic/Hospital. Karen, the driver, is very helpful in getting passen- gers on and off and letting them know how long they have at a stop before she will be back. The cost is only $3 and you can get on and off as many times as you like. You can even get on and just “scoop the loop” and go for a ride. Hop on the bus and give it a try. Jodel B.A.S.S. Spotlight on:

4th of July

Another 4th of July has come and gone, but the fond memories remain. We were blessed with a very beautiful but hot and humid day. The theme of this year’s parade was “We’re Proud to be American’s”. As in years past, Dennis Witte of Witte Supply provided us with an 8’x17’ flat bed trailer & pulled our proudly decorated float through the streets of Waterford. The heat pre-vented everyone who wanted to participate to ride on the float, but Eugene Albee, Ethel So-lowoda, Joan Haffner, Lois Marty (Dennis’s grandma) & new staff member Brittany proudly represented Waterford Senior Living. Residents who chose not to ride on the float, were invited to sit under a tent in front of St Peter’s Church to watch the festivities. When it was first an-nounced what the theme of the parade was going to be, all the residents agreed: We truly are

PROUD TO BE AMERICANS! Two special Thank you’s go out to Rivermoor Golf Club for the use of a golf cart for the day so people could get to the parade and to the Lions Club of Waterford for pro-viding us with the tent for parade viewing. Special Thanks to Kristy for orchestrating the float each year. Another fine job.

We are in the heat of summer so things are really starting to grow in a big way. We have had several picking of lettuce and have eaten it in various meals. We had our first picking of beans on Monday. We had very many yellow beans. And some of the green beans were able to be picked also. One of our variety of green beans was close to be a good picking size but not quite. We will be picking those on Thursday or Fri-day. They should be ready then. When the tomatoes are ready we will have LOTS. There are very many flowers and green cherry tomatoes on the vine. We even have 1 purple egg plant on the vie this year. It will be interesting to see if any of the other blooms turn into an egg plant. There are also a lot of blooms on the cucumbers. Maybe we’ll get enough to make cucumber salad this year. Thanks to Gene for keeping everything watered and fertilized.

Garden Up Date
