Condolences may be expressed at www.hagerfuneral- home.com. From the time the first Catholic settlers arrived in this area in the late 1700s, Meade County has been a place of faith. Missionary priests arrived to serve these Catholics in their pioneer log homes called “church stations,” where the Mass and sacraments were cele- brated. e earliest record of these visits was 1805. As the Catholic settlers increased and acquired more land, a permanent log church was built at the station. In 1818, Saint eresa was estab- lished. Later, in 1872, Saint Mary Magdalen of Pazzi was established. e Catholic faith was brought by these early set - tlers to the shores of Ken- tucky, which was referred to by local tribes as “a dark and bloody ground.” A vast wilderness, but a prime place for hunting, building, and agriculture, yet also suited Minister’s Corner for the free practice of faith. e danger of death was constant from hostile tribes, hunger, elements, accidents, and illness. As a result, these settlers usually lived well prepared for their individual judgment by Christ. is intense practice of the faith is what built these early com- munities. is reality contrasts with the modern saying of “build it and they will come”, which focuses on recruitment via the benefits of a grand mate- rial structure. e Catholic Church, the Mystical Body of Christ, is built of “living stones” from 1 Peter 2:5 that form a “spiritual house.” In other words, “live it and they will come.” Too oſten today, evange- lization is reduced to mere marketing – a concept that needs to be shared. Yet, we need to return to how the faith spread so rapidly in the early Church – dedicated Christians fully living what they believed. If you want to spread the faith, live the faith. is was the example of the pioneers, where their “waves of faith” washed ashore and remain today.
