YOUR PAPER, YOUR PLACE
Finally, I’m feeling the Christmasspirit.
Some years it takes a while toarrive but with only five sleeps togo until Santa delivers my 30litres of half Baltic Sea housepaint, I’m starting to hear thebells.
Even the bad stories seemmore festive somehow. Themeanie who stole the Christmaslights [page 3] should give themback though and maybe the policewill get their man for Christmas[page 5].
Turangi showed how it wasdone once again with theiramazing parade, concert andafternoon of fun on the weekend.Check out those pictures on page20.
Walkers and cyclists can nowgo further, in style, along the lakefront with the opening of the finalstage of the shared pathway to 5Mile Bay.
We will continue to bring youthe Friday edition of the TaupoTimes, right through the holidayperiod, but this will be the lastTuesday edition for a few weeks.

Story of a light fingered grinchSTEPH RANGI
Candy cane and solar lights were taken from houses in The Circle last week. STEPH RANGI
Lighting their street up to cel-ebrate Christmas has been theirthing for a number of years - untilsomeone stole the show.
Nukuhau’s The Circle is asmall suburb that takesChristmas very seriously. For thepast five years about 18households have decked out theirhomes with lights from the firstSunday of December.
Just last Thursday, tworesidents of The Circle noticedsome of their lights were missing. The first case of thievery theyhave suffered since it all started.
Three solar lights were takenfrom Katherine Froggatt’s frontyard, while Moon Kim’s candycane lights also fell victim to thelight fingered thieves.
‘‘I just can’t believe ithappened,’’ Froggatt said.
‘‘You do still believe in the bestin some people until these thingshappen.’’
When walking her daughter tokindergarten, Froggatt noticedthe solar lights missing.
‘‘They were placed right nextto the mailbox,’’ she said.
‘‘When I got back I thoughtsomething’s missing. We lookedaround for them and just thoughtno way they’ve been stolen.’’
Kim mentioned how someonehad seen vehicles driving aroundThe Circle during the day andalso how Kim had seen people
circling the area slowly in theearly hours of the morning.
‘‘It’s hard to tell the differencebetween acting suspiciously andcoming to have a look,’’ Froggattsaid.
The Circle residents take realpride and joy when making theirhomes festive for Christmas andFroggatt said if it keepshappening, they might stop takingpart.
During the first Sunday ofDecember, the residents hold aNeighbourhood SupportChristmas Party for everyone toenjoy.
‘‘We usually just trust peoplein general,’’ Froggatt said.
‘‘Children come right up to thehouses and take photos and that’sO.K.’’
Froggatt said with theChristmas season now here, she
understood how some familiesmight be having a difficult time, but the lights had a lot of senti-mental value and she would liketo see them returned.
‘‘When we first moved here, they were the first thing webought,’’ she said.
‘‘We are hoping they returnthem, no questions asked. Thatwould be the real Christmasspirit.’’
Pathway opens
The final stretch of the sharedpath betweenWharewaka andFiveMile Baywas officiallyopened on Thursday byMayorDavid Trewavas and long-timeresident JackWaters.
The new 2.5metre section ofpath links the two lakeside areasfor pedestrians, cyclists, wheelchairs and buggies.
A sealed road and car parkingarea have also been constructedand a low timber barrier installedto separate vehicles andpedestrians for safety.
Trewavas said hewasdelighted to be able to witnessthe extension of such awell-usedpath.
‘‘Somanymembers of ourcommunity and visitors use thispath and it’s another greatattraction for our district,’’ he said.‘‘It’s a privilege to be able to openthis new section and I lookforward to seeing people takeadvantage of it and using itmyself.’’
He acknowledged the hardwork by contractors Deano’sEarthmoving and Logging, staffand agencies to complete theproject prior to Christmas.
‘‘We’ve gained some amazinginfrastructure here that will reallyopen this area up to visitors andmake it amore beautiful place tovisit,’’ he said.
The shared path is now openfor use, and the road and carpark will followwhen the fencingcomes down.

Turangi Mall’s glass ceiling is set to be removed in the
New Year. SUPPLIED
The glass ceiling is being shattered in Turangi, forall the wrong reasons.
Turangi Mall’s glass roof is cracked and brokenafter too many people have climbed up and used itas a playground, pathway or a means to pilferfrom shops.
Taupo District Council has taken the drasticaction to order the glass roof removed, fearing it isonly a matter of time before someone falls throughand is seriously injured.
Residents have reported seeing children climb-ing up the shop verandahs and using the glassceiling as a slide and shop owners have reportedthieves using the rooftops to gain access to busi-nesses.
Turangi councillor Tangonui Kingi used toown an appliance store in the mall and had heardthieves had used the rooftops.
‘‘I can understand a child maybe trying to get aball down from the roof or something,’’ he said.
‘‘It’s still dangerous and shouldn’t happen, butadults have no reason being up there.
‘‘Over the years, there have been some theftswhere people have gotten access via the roof orused the glass roof as a walkway to get from oneside of the mall to another where it would pre-viously be inaccessible. It connects the whole malltogether.’’
Kingi said signs have been erected to warnpeople not to climb onto the ceiling in the mean-time.
‘‘It is a health and safety risk,’’ he said.‘‘Some of the panels have been fully jumped on
and are cracked.’’The glass ceiling will be removed early in the
New Year after TDC facilities manager GarrethRobinson said it had become too expensive tomake repairs.
‘‘The roofs aren’t designed to hold suchweight,’’ he said. ’’The glass is cracking andbreaking, so we need to remove the entirestructures.’’
‘‘People appear to have been climbing ontoadjacent buildings and walking on to the glassroof,’’ he said. ‘‘There is a high chance thoseclimbing on these structures will fall and hurtthemselves, or even worse, be killed.
Camp closed for manhuntMATT SHAND AND LIBBY

One resident reported seeing a young officer with a ‘bloody big rifle’.
MATT SHAND/FAIRFAX NZ
‘‘I don't thinkthey're looking forsomeone with anoverdue parkingticket.’’Eye witness
Armed police officers cordoned offa road and a popular freedomcamp near Taupo to search for a‘‘person of interest who is knownto police’’.
Reid’s Farm, was closed off onSunday evening, police dogs werebrought in and people were askedto avoid the area. The cordon waslifted at 10.15pm with policeunable to find the person theywere after.
Police earlier confirmed theyhad set up a cordon on Huka FallsRoad but would say only that itwas ’’an evolving situation’’.
Huka Lodge staffers had heardan armed man was on the loose inthe area but guests were unaffec-ted by the road blocks.
Police would not say whetherthe person they were searchingfor was armed.
A woman who lives in thecordoned-off area was in the
kitchen and turned around to seepolice cars pull up, and ‘‘a bloodybig rifle’’ emerge.
‘‘I don’t think they’re lookingfor someone with an overdueparking ticket,’’ said the woman, who did not wish to be named.
The woman was told policewere looking for someone butthere was no danger to locals, shesaid.
She was told to stay inside. The woman had also seen a
police helicopter flying aroundthe area, she said.
Freedom campers, includingabout 15 campervans had built upbehind the cordon, waiting foraccess to Reid’s Farm.

‘‘Taupo has its fair share of sportinghighs this year too.’’
‘‘ McCartney is actually as good-heartedbehind the scenes as she appears to be inthe public arena.’’Phil Gifford
Sporting grinches, and other awards
Eliza McCartney celebrates a bronze
medal. GETTY IMAGES
PHIL GIFFORD
OPINION: Time for reflection, time for a break next weekend, time for awards.
Grinches of the Year: Sharedequally by Sir Robert Jones andLance Revill. Jones for his sugges-tion that Joseph Parker’s WBOtitle was ‘‘a joke’’ and Revill forsaying Parker’s win made him‘‘embarrassed to be a Kiwi.’’
The big disclaimer that shouldrun every time Jones or Revillspeaks out on Parker is that Joneswas once a member of Parker’smanagement team, and Revill wasonce Parker’s trainer. The keywords here are ‘‘was once.’’
Hey Hayne Train, This IsHow You Swap Sports Award:Hamish Bond wins rowing goldwith Eric Murray in Rio, thendecides he might give cycling a bitof a nudge. He finishes eighth in afield of 120 in the Tour of South-land, placing third in one stage
and fourth in another, then blitzesthe field to win the Abel Tasmanchallenge at the start of thismonth. His aim now? The cyclingtime trial at the Tokyo Olympics.
Quote of the Year: Scott Rob-ertson, asked by Tony Veitch ifhis wife helped him fill in theform to apply for the Crusaders’coaching job.
‘‘Yep. She’s a very cleverwoman. She’s got a double degree.Hers and mine.’’
The Shiver Looking For aSpine to Run Up Award: TheIOC who, in the face of over-whelming evidence that Russiawas back to running an Iron Cur-tain style doping regime, chickened out on a full ban forRio. Could the fact that, on theother hand, the Russians werebanned from the infinitely lesswealthy Paralympics, be con-nected in any way with the hugemoney, and decades of graft, thatmark the IOC?
Not Too Good to Be TrueAward: Eliza McCartney. Myapologies in advance for thename-dropping, but how wonder-ful to be told privately by ValerieAdams that McCartney is actuallyas good-hearted behind the scenesas she appears to be in the public
arena.And Valerie, herself genuinely
as wonderful as her warm image, would recognise a decent personwhen she sees one.
Family Ties Award: LydiaKo. We’ve all heard of stagemothers. What’s a little weirdabout the stories swirling aroundthe Ko clan, most of them told byinsiders with regret rather thanglee, is that in Lydia’s case it’smore a stage father and stage sis-ter.
Donald Trump TruthinessAward: So the Rio Olympics weresupposed to be plagued by viol-ence and a terrifying mosquitovirus? In the end the only thingclose to unpleasantness the mediabeat-up before the Gamespromised turned out to be a nastylittle dyed jerk of an Americancalled Ryan Lochte, who, with aturn of phrase Trump would havebeen proud of, said he hadn’t beenlying about being held up, he just
‘‘should have been more carefulwith how I described it.’’
Fooled You Award: The yearof the great upsets? Leicester Citywin the premier league, the Cubswin the world series, theCavaliers win the NBA finals,Ireland beat the All Blacks. TheBlack Caps win ... oh no ... that’sright, in the Hadlee-Chappellseries the underdogs played likeunderdogs.
Golden DNA Award: TheBarretts. Given the chance tostart for the All Blacks, Beaudenfully deserved his world player ofthe year award.
Then his younger but biggerbrother Scott stepped into the AllBlacks like he’d been there foryears. And in the Naki there aresome who suggest young Jordiemight be the best of the lot.
The secret? Father Kevin toldan Irish journalist, ‘‘There wereno Playstations at home, just gooutside and kick a ball round.’’

Keep kids active to maintain fitness
Encourage children to make fitness and basic skills maintenance a daily habit.
Swap your childen’s screens for some fun inthe sun, writes Erin Riley.
Backyard banter
Neighbourly is a NZ-owned social media site creating easy ways for neighbours to talk and connect. Join us at neighbourly.co.nz or download our new iPhone and Android apps.
Sport is a big part of schoolthese days, with myriadcodes to choose from andcompetitive or social
leagues to join. But just becauseschool’s out for more than amonth, doesn’t mean your kidsneed to let their sporting skills goout to pasture.
In fact, in much the same waythat the three Rs – Reading,wRiting and aRithmetic – needconstant refreshing, kids need tomaintain their sporting skillswhen they’re not at school. Themore you encourage them to runaround outside during thesummer holidays, the morethey’ll put their best foot forwardin the new year. Literally.
GET OUTSIDEInstead of worrying about howyou’ll keep your kids entertainedthese school holidays, embracethe extra time (and the extrahours of sunlight) and encouragethem to swap their screens for the
great outdoors. Set up a challengecourse around the backyard(think: crawl under thetrampoline then climb over thepicnic table) and add their chosensport into the mix to keep theirskills up (think: dribble abasketball from one end of thedriveway to the other or kick fivegoals into the back of the net).
HEAD TO THE BEACHIt’s virtually part of the Kiwi DNAthat we love a casual game offooty on the beach, so next timeyou take your kids to the beach,
pack some sports equipment too.Football and rugby balls don’ttake up much room, and cricketimprovisation is easy when yourepurpose a chilly bin as wickets.
SPORT YEAR-ROUNDGone are the days when sport waslimited to seasons. Many sports(or versions of the same sport) arenow played year-round – football, futsal, rugby and touch, andnetball and indoor netball. To
remain competitive, encourageyour kids to make fitness andbasic skills maintenance a dailyhabit.
SPORTING ‘HOMEWORK’If your kids want to brush up ontheir Lionel Messi skills thissummer, check out theMcDonald’s Junior Football skillsvideos available atnzfootball.co.nz. ‘‘These funactivities and tricks can be used
by parents and coaches alike, justabout anywhere,’’ says OwainProsser, football developmentmanager at New Zealand Football.‘‘It’s just as important to keepkids’ bodies active as it is theirminds, and the summer holidaysare the perfect time to challengethem and keep them playing, while having lots of fun at thesame time.’’
SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE‘‘You don’t have to be aprofessional coach to helpchildren learn new skills,’’Prosser says. ‘‘The moreenthusiastic parents can be,whilst praising the children fortheir efforts, the more engagingthe activity. The key thing isgetting out there and kicking aball around with them – wenormally find that the parentsenjoy it as much as the children!’’❚ For more information aboutMcDonald’s Junior Football, visit nzfootball.co.nz. To enrolyour kids in a sporting leaguein the new year, ask at theirschool or keep an eye out onNeighbourly.

Fix sleep issueswithout pills
Sometimes sleeping challenges are linked to the biochemistry within the body
and sometimes it is emotional. 123RF

Email your questions for Dr Libby to
Please note, only a selection of
questions can be answered.
Your healthWITH AUTHOR AND NUTRITIONAL BIOCHEMIST DR LIBBY
Q: For the past few months I’vehad rotten sleep. I have beenusing sleeping pills on and offjust to get some proper rest butI don’t want to become relianton them. Do you have anysuggestions for fixing sleepissues without sleeping pills? Thanks, James.
A: Hi James, good-qualityrestorative sleep is a widespreadchallenge. It takes a third of NewZealanders more than 30 minutesto get to sleep and a few years agoin 2012, almost 680,000 uniquesleeping pill prescriptions weregiven. When your body has lostthe ability to do something sobasic, that is a distinct piece offeedback from the body thatsomething(s) need to change.
When sleeping pills are used asa bridge, as a short-term band-aidfor sleep problems, it’s not usuallya major concern. But sleepingpills are just that – a band-aid –and until the deeper issue(s) that
created the sleep challenges in thefirst place are addressed, noprogress will be made that allowsa person to come off the sleepingpills and begin sleeping naturallyagain.
Sometimes these sleepingchallenges are linked to thebiochemistry within the body(such as too much alcohol orcaffeine), and sometimes it isemotional. For example, you maylay awake at night runningthrough all the things you didn’tget done that day and how muchthat’s going to roll into tomorrow.I’ve talked about living in thefight or flight zone many times inmy writing. That too is a commonreason why many people don’tsleep well these days.
A great way to identify whatlays at the heart of your issue is toask yourself when you lastremember sleeping well. If it waswhen you were on holiday, youcan bet that stress is playing a bigpart. If the last time you slept well
was in a hotel, again it could bestress but it might also be worthlooking at what you’re sleepingon. People often keep their bedsfor far too long so it might be alack of structural support that’sstopping you from resting easy.
Pay attention to whether yousleep better when you have asmaller meal for dinner and tryomitting spicy food in theevenings and eating smallerportions.
Maybe the last time you sleptwell was after abstaining fromalcohol for a period of time.Alcohol disrupts REM (rapid eyemovement) sleep which is the
fourth part of our sleep cycle andwhen critical repair work is doneinside our body.
Sometimes our sleep cycle isdisrupted due to an interferencewith melatonin production.Melatonin is your primary sleephormone, it helps you to fallasleep and stay asleep throughoutthe night. Its production in yourbody is affected by light. Whenyou expose your eyes to light lateinto the evening, through anymeans, including the use ofbacklit devices (such as iPads, mobile phones and laptops), oryou work until late under a brightlight or watch television, it can
affect your melatonin production.Become aware of how much lightyou’re exposing your eyes towithin two hours of bedtime andmake your bedroom a televisionand wireless device free zone.
It’s also helpful to reset yourcircadian rhythm (your naturalsleep cycle) by getting up at thesame time each morning andexposing your eyes to gentlemorning sunlight. It’s preferableto get up and go outside andexercise but even just walkingoutside for a few minutes toexpose your eyes to the light ofthis new day can be beneficial.Commit to doing this for a weekminimum, and begin to notice thedifference.❚ Dr Libby is a nutritionalbiochemist, best-selling authorand speaker.
