Landcare Update

Landcare update for Windellama news February 2011

The Windellama Landcare Group held their AGM and Christmas party at the Landcare Shed at Windellama Hall in December and the new committee was elected:

President – Tony Greville Treasurer – Marian Pearce Secretary – Sandra Greville Grounds Operations Director (GOD) – John Pearce Assistant GOD – Doug Gurney Catering Officers – Joy and John Darragh Publicity Officers – Peter Hudson Stores Managers – Ruth and Fayez Nour

Encouraged by the grants we have received, there will be much for Windellama Landcarers to do during the year. Our first working bee will be held at Graeme Kinder’s property “King's Lance” on Saturday 12 February. We will be strengthening sections of previous work which failed following heavy rain over the past twelve months. The work involves placing extra rock on washed out sections. We will meet at 9.30am for a cuppa to commence work at 10am. Work should be finished by lunchtime. Bring gloves and shovels.

Please let us know if you are coming – ring either Joy or John on 4844 5225 or Sandra on 4844 5047.

Newcomers to the Windellama area are most welcome to join our Group – if you want to learn what the Windellama Landcare Group does, you are invited to come along to one of our working bees (and there is always some a good tucker there too!) - call one of the numbers above for more information.

Membership of our Landcare Group is $5.00 for a family.

Disaster Relief Funding

Goulburn Mulwaree Mayor Geoff Kettle is encouraging local farmers, business people, individuals and families, sporting clubs and voluntary organisations affected by flooding in December to access funding assistance where possible.

On top of natural disaster assistance announced last year, the State and Federal Governments this week activated a package of one-off grants worth up to $15,000 for primary producers and small businesses.

“While strict conditions apply for the grants and disaster assistance, I am sure the support could benefit many in our community,” Cr Kettle said.

“Applications for the grants must be lodged by 30 June 2011 and more information is available from the NSW Rural Assistance Authority on 1800 678 593 or at www.raa.nsw.gov.au.”

The grants are considered ‘Category C assistance’ and will:

Help primary producers with general clean up costs including the removal of debris and dead livestock, purchase of fodder and replacement trading stock and repairs to damaged equipment and property access – without which production and viability could be disrupted beyond the next season.

Help small businesses affected by flooding to conduct repairs and resume trading as soon as

possible.

The NSW Natural Disaster Relief Arrangements can also provide disaster relief grants to eligible individuals and families whose homes and essential household items were destroyed or damaged. People whose cars were written off as a result of the flooding may be eligible for a stamp duty refund on their replacement vehicle, where the written off vehicle was comprehensively insured and the insurance did not cover duty for a replacement vehicle.

Loans and transport subsidies are also available for primary producers, while small businesses can access loans of up to $130,000 with very low interest rates. Sporting clubs, churches and voluntary non-profit organisations may also be eligible for support.

Smith and Richard Dunn, and continues through to more recent works by Aboriginal artists from remote regions. The diversity of materials and approaches is reflected in the media and methods employed by the artists – from Robert Klippel’s delicately teetering metal sculptures to Hany Armanious’ hotmelt sculptures that solidify the negative spaces of various wine glasses. Similarly works by Rosalie Gascoigne and Neil Roberts use found objects which carry the aura of their history, while the exhibition has an international feel with work by Callum Innes and Robert Rauschenberg.

The exhibition includes a number of photographic works by artists such as Rosemary Laing and Anne Zahalka, which combine wit, scale and observation alongside compelling portraits and street studies by regional artist, photojournalist Jon Lewis. Significantly, the exhibition also features several works by respected Aboriginal artists, including the acclaimed Emily Kame Kngwarreye, Sally Gabori, Gloria Petyarre and Judy Watson.

The second exhibition to open on Saturday is a series of photographic works depicting some of the area’s public artworks.

Local photographer Perc Carter’s a personal perspective will be held in the Gallery’s foyer until 5 February, and features a series of black and white images.

“Perc Carter has taken some wonderfully framed images of the public art around Goulburn,” Ms Cush said.

“I know that many locals will enjoy his work, and hopefully it encourages them to go and see the public artworks first hand.”

Two exhibitions at GRAG

The Goulburn Regional Art Gallery is ringing in the new year with the opening of two remarkable new exhibitions on Saturday 15 January.

Organised by the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) in Sydney, Almanac – The Gift of Ann Lewis AO provides an extraordinary road map of Australian art practice over the last 50 years, shaped by the vision of one of Australia’s best regarded collectors and arts supporters.

Goulburn Regional Art Gallery Director Jane Cush said Almanac presents the generous donation made to the MCA by Ann Lewis.

“Thanks to Ann’s roles as collector, philanthropist and gallerist, visitors to this exhibition can enjoy a collection of works built at the forefront of cultural production across five decades,” Ms Cush said.

The exhibition also draws on the major gifts by Ann Lewis to the Newcastle Region Art Gallery and Moree Plains Gallery.

“We are lucky to have the Head of Artistic Programs at MCA, Judith Blackall, to open this exhibition on Saturday 15 January at 2pm. This is a perfect opportunity for locals to hear from and speak with some members of the MCA, along with Ann Lewis herself, who is planning on being at the opening,” Ms Cush said.

“There will also be a floor talk at 12.30pm on Thursday 20 January by the Curator of this exhibition, Glenn Barkley. This is guaranteed to be a fascinating presentation about the MCA, and in particular the collection of Ann Lewis.”

Almanac – The Gift of Ann Lewis includes works by modernist Ralph Balson, John Firth-

Tablelands wild dog program already a success

Rangers from the Tablelands Livestock Health and Pest Authority have reported early successes with their wild dog and feral pig control program in the Bannaby/Barrallier areas.

The program is conducted in conjunction with the Hawkesbury-Nepean Catchment Management Authority, and aims to reduce the impact of wild dogs and feral pigs on the environment and domestic livestock.

Tablelands LHPA ranger, Grant Eccles, says the first half of the program has just been undertaken and it’s already proving worthwhile.

“We engaged a professional trapper, Andrew McDougall, who has already caught nine wild dogs, as well as a number of feral pigs and foxes.

“Trapping feral animals in open country that has a long history of control can be extremely difficult. This is why detailed planning and the use of professionals such as Andrew are required to achieve any success,” he said.

The program has been enhanced by local landholders undertaking 1080 baiting to reduce fox populations to enhance the likelihood of success of catching wild dogs and feral pigs.

“This is a proactive program involving the Tablelands LHPA, Hawkesbury-Nepean CMA, the contractor and the landholder to help reduce the impact of wild dogs and feral pigs,” Mr Eccles said.

“The Tablelands LHPA has a long history of undertaking successful projects with the CMA in conjunction with landholders, and we will continue to work collaboratively on controlling pest animals.”

For the second half of this program, local wild dogs and feral pigs will be monitored via remote camera to determine where another round of trapping with the professional trapper will be conducted in January and February 2011.

This project has been jointly funded by the LHPA and the Hawkesbury-Nepean CMA with funds from the Australian Government’s Caring for our Country program.

For more information on wild dog or feral pig control contact your local office of the Tablelands LHPA.
