WELCOME Spring has finally sprung and, for the first time, we will see the results of all the hard work put in by the team who designed and landscaped the school campus.

Rather fittingly we also get to see the results of four years hard work by staff and pupils as Year 10 sit their GCSE mock exams.

I wish them all the best and look forward to sharing the fruits of their labour.

Mr Boyd, Headmaster

On Thursday, 3rd May The Island Free School went head to head with Ryde School during the Island Schools Golf Championship 2018, held at Ryde Golf Club. Four competitions were held, and whilst Ryde School filled the winners’ spots overall, some pupils from our school achieved great places; Joel T, was runner up in Division 1 with 28 points alongside Harrison B, who narrowly missed out in a playoff spot for Division 2. The supporting staff, Mr Peace and Miss Healey, were impressed and proud of the pupils who have been working extremely hard for the last few months.By Beau E

Due to the surplus in teacher applications at this time of year, we decided to ask Ms Turtle how

the process at our own school works. “We first work out how many new teachers we will need to join us when the new school year starts and advertise the available spaces for staff on our website, Facebook page and in local newspapers.’ ‘When we reach the closing date for the applications, we as the Senior Staff team all sit down together to discuss who we think is the best fit for the school.’ ‘After that we contact the candidates and offer them an interview, which involves them coming in and teaching a lesson of their chosen subject as well as meeting the pupils in and around the school, to see how they gel with the school’s ethos and to see how they work and interact with the new and the current teaching staff.’

‘They are then put into small groups where they are interviewed together by the senior members of staff.’ ‘When we are choosing who we should employ we look at GCSE results, A-levels and teaching degrees; while also looking at their recommendations. However, a major factor is also the pupils’ opinions. At the end of every teacher trial, the pupils are free to express their decision on whether they think that the interviewee is fit for the job.’ ‘Once we have chosen the new members of staff, we contact the people who we want to employ.’ We would like to say thank you to Ms Turtle for spending the time with us to explain this process, as we now know what it takes to become a teacher at TIFS.

Interview by Calum R and Ronny M

On Thursday 15th March 2018, a group of Year 7’s & 8’s, recommended by teachers who thought they really deserved it, were selected to take

part in an activity in which they made a professional-looking report based on true facts; pupils then spent the remainder of the day rehearsing. Their efforts were not for nothing, however, as at the end of the day they got to record the finished result and upload it to our school website. Ms Travers and Mrs Boyd ran and supervised the project in the photography room. We asked Ms Travers what she thought of the day: “I think all the pupils did fantastically. We had loads of Year 7 & 8’s come and we managed to make more reports than ever before!” We also asked Ms Travers about why certain pupils were picked, and she told us; “We just asked for pupils capable in both English and Drama, and staff made some excellent recommendations.” By Ronny M and Sam S

Warhammer is an enrichment run by Miss Kerley. The game itself consists of small

models that you can paint and collect, which are used on a large table-top battlefield. This widely celebrated game has led to many competitions, one of which pupils from our own school participated in. We competed against another Island school in one of these competitions, and we won. We are looking forward to seeing what we can achieve in the Warhammer leauge. By Archie B and Beau E

On 20th March, two teams of excited Year 10’s went to Sandown Bay Academy for

the ‘Maths Feast’ competition. They were given non-calculator questions to test their amazing ability for the difficult subject. There were nine teams in total taking part, and our Year 10’s came in a superb second place, beaten only by Ryde School’s

A-Team. The event was run by the Further Mathematics Support Programme, who encourage young people to carry on studying maths outside of the normal curriculum. By Sam S and Ronny M
