The two-day event saw 30 high school teams with over 500 swimmers from west Kentucky compete in quali- fying heats on Friday. Only the top 18 finishes in each event would return to swim again in the championships on Saturday. By Friday’s end, the Pa- triots had one new school record, with six relay teams and two individuals qualify- ing for Saturday’s competi- tion. Senior swimmer Amy Gerald qualified eighth in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:19.32) and improved on Saturday to 1:18.20, main- taining an eighth place over- all finish. Junior swimmer Travis Durocher qualified seventh in the 100-yard butterfly (58.71) on Friday and fin- ished in eighth place with a finals time of 58.91. On Fri- day, Travis also broke the 100-yard backstroke school record (1:02.46) with a new time of 1:02.10 and quali- fied eighth. Saturday, he finished eighth with a time of 102.69. The girls medley relay team (Kristine Gillenwa- ter, Amy Gerald, Amanda Gerald and Lindsey Blair) qualified 14th with a time of 2:18.63, then went on to finish Saturday with the 12th fastest time of 2:15.63, shaving off over three sec- onds from Friday’s time. The boys medley relay team (Ed Anglea, Seth Jones, Travis Durocher, Aaron Holder) qualified and finished in 13th place, but bested their Friday time (2:11.56) with a 2:06.90 fin- ish on Saturday. The girls 200-yard free relay team (Amanda Ger- ald, Lindsey Blair, Vanes- sa Durocher, Amy Gerald) qualified 13th with a time of 1:59.47 and then dropped five seconds (1:54.94) on Saturday, just missing the school record time of 1:53.93 set in 2009. The boys 200-yard free relay team (Ed Anglea, Mi- chael Mason, Dylan Grizzle, Aaron Holder) qualified 16th on Friday with a time of 2:05.33. Scholarships Available Civil Engineering Scholarship Program The Kentucky Transpor- tation Cabinet awards 10-20 new scholarships each year to qualifying students who are interested in attending the University of Kentucky (UK) or Western Kentucky University (WKU) or Uni- versity of Louisville (U of L) J. B. Speed School of En- gineering to obtain a Bach- elors of Science in Civil En- gineering (BSCE). Students may also attend pre-engi- neering courses at Kentucky State University (KSU) or through the Kentucky Com- munity and Technical Col- lege (KCTCS) system and finish their Bachelors of Sci- ence in Civil Engineering (BSCE) at one of the accred- ited institutions. The AC-S Patriot Swim Team traveled to Owensboro, Ky., Friday to begin KHSAA Region One competition.
