The four stories were called Full Circle. I was killed by the Marsh- men. The title—Full Circle—is one of the many phrases invented by Shakespeare. Others include: “All our yesterdays” (Macbeth). “As good luck would have it” (The Merry Wives of Windsor). “Be-all and the end-all” (Macbeth). “Brave new world” (The Tempest). “In my mind’s eye” (Hamlet). “Wild-goose chase” (Romeo and Juliet)… and many many more. Over the 50-plus years of my theatrical ca- reer, “nobody wants to see Shakespeare” is a cry I have heard over and over. Yet his work continues to survive and prosper worldwide. The theatre company I worked with in New York taught Shakespeare at a school in Har- lem. These young people were highly skeptical at the beginning, but on the first night of their production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Shakespeare’s words took them over. Their joy was evident as they discovered the poetry and made it their own. Most young people adore Shakespeare, espe- cially when they are asked to speak the words. When my eldest daughter was eight years old, I heard her say “Are you yet living?” to her younger sister...a line she’d heard in that sum- mer’s SLSF production of Much Ado About Nothing. I am writing about Shakespeare because I’m in Washington DC, visiting the Folger Library, which houses the world’s largest Shakespeare collection. It’s a mecca for anyone interested in WS. My job at the St. Lawrence Shakespeare Fes- tival is not to persuade you or anyone else to like Shakespeare. That will come through the productions themselves and how acces- sible we can make them to our audiences. As Shakespeare said: Action is eloquence…which brings us full circle. Personally, I’m a country fan. My favour- ite country is the late 90s and early 2000s, and I like to listen pretty much whenever I can. While I’m cooking, in the shower, and especially in the car. But I think my favourite way to listen to music is whenever it’s live. My job comes with lots of perks - one of them being that we book live music at least twice a month. Sometimes it’s not on my shifts, but I got lucky this past week- end and was scheduled to work Friday night when we had a musi- cian coming in. Not only a musician, but my fa- vourite one we book! His name is The Val- ley Shantyman, and he’s so much fun. He sings a mix of music, but my fa- vourite thing is that he always asks the crowd what they want to hear, and he normally sings at least one Alan Jackson song just for me. He’s very talented, and I count myself lucky that I get to enjoy his performance while I work. Everyone gets into it and we sing and dance the whole night; it makes for a really fun shift. He isn’t the only live music we get in. We have a bunch of really amaz- ing performers that come out to play for us. If you ever get the chance, you should swing by to check them out. Just after my 21st birthday, I fulfilled one of my lifetime ambitions: I had a leading role in four episodes of Dr. Who. The four stories were called Full Circle. I was killed by the Marsh-men.

The title—Full Circle—is one of the many phrases invented by Shakespeare.

Others include: “All our yesterdays” (Macbeth).

“As good luck would have it” (The Merry Wives of Windsor).

“Be-all and the end-all” (Macbeth).“Brave new world” (The Tempest).

“In my mind’s eye” (Hamlet).“Wild-goose chase” (Romeo and Juliet)…

and many many more.Over the 50-plus years of my theatrical ca-

reer, “nobody wants to see Shakespeare” is a cry I have heard over and over. Yet his work continues to survive and prosper worldwide.

The theatre company I worked with in New York taught Shakespeare at a school in Har-lem. These young people were highly skeptical at the beginning, but on the first night of their production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream,

Shakespeare’s words took them over. Their joy was evident as they discovered the poetry and made it their own.

Most young people adore Shakespeare, espe-cially when they are asked to speak the words.

When my eldest daughter was eight years old, I heard her say “Are you yet living?” to her younger sister...a line she’d heard in that sum-mer’s SLSF production of Much Ado About Nothing.

My job at the St. Lawrence Shakespeare Fes-tival is not to persuade you or anyone else to like Shakespeare. That will come through the productions themselves and how acces-sible we can make them to our audiences. As Shakespeare said: Action is eloquence…which brings us full circle.
