The Parishes of
MALLIA'S MOMENTS by Fr. Joe Mallia
In today's second reading from the Letter of St. Paul to the Philippians, we hear a verse that is very close to my heart and gives me daily strength no matter what I face. St. Paul wrote, "I can do all things in Him who strengthens me". Think about how powerful this verse is, because unlike so often when people encourage each other by calling out their own inner strength, St. Paul reminds us that even beyond inner strength lies something more - God. St. Paul is not just encouraging and rooting for the Philippians by recalling his ability to overcome personal struggles, he is providing hope to them because they are not alone and that even when they are completely spent, they can do the impossible because their real strength comes from God.
How often at a competition, you will hear someone shout out to a relative or friend, "you got this"! But St. Paul is not talking about sports. The Philippians were facing real dangers and real life and death problems. St. Paul wants us to understand the real gift we have been given. I know I am not capable of doing everything, I grow weary, unsure of myself and my own ability. I know I become overwhelmed by the situations of life and struggle to find value in my efforts, but then I pause and recall that there is more than me in this daily struggle. I am not taking each step or each decision by myself and it is not me against the world; God will strengthen me and has each and every day of my life. I know that deep in my heart, I have accomplished nothing without God guiding me, enlightening me and strengthening me. It was this awareness in the life of St. Paul that kept him grateful and humble before the Lord and it reminds me of how I am to act before God.
Are you feeling overwhelmed, unsure and insecure? Are you hesitant to do something that is good? God may not help you win a game, but God is capable of helping you win over sin. God will give you the strength to fight despair and against hopelessness. God will provide all that you need to finally overcome that persistent fault in your life. No matter how difficult it has been, with God all things are possible and God can do it in your life. You don't have to do it alone; you don't have to rely only on your own abilities - God can do all things in you because it is God who strengthens you. Now, let’s go forth with confidence and overcome all things that have been keeping us from giving our hearts fully to God.
Pray the Rosary
As we recall the 100th anniversary of the apparition of Mary at Fatima, I again urge all families and individuals to pray the rosary every day. You can pray it in the car, at home, between events, during lunch or whenever you find 20 minutes. Mary has given us the rosary as a defense against evil and we need to heed her words. Pray for us, O Mother of God, that we may be worthy of the promises of Christ.

School Auction
Just a reminder that seats for this years school auction are selling quickly and I hope that we can sell out all the tickets again this year. The school auction benefits the school in various ways, especially by designating some of the money for special projects. Last year we were able to invest money to get Chromebooks for the middle school. This year, I would like to be able to expand that tool a bit more and replace the desks in the middle school with tables and chairs. Improvements and growth take time and money; and our auction is a great source of revenue so that we do not need to keep making big hikes in our tuition. As enrollment grows, we are going to need to add more supplies for our teachers to address the new students. Thank you for your support.
As we get deeper into fall
One of the things that becomes a concern for older members in our community is dealing with leaves and snow removal. I would encourage you to think about the older members in your neighborhood and if you know they need help, offer now to take care of picking

up their leaves or promise to shovel the sidewalk at least when it snows. This is a great outreach and will really put their minds at rest knowing that this will be taken care of when the time comes. Thank you for considering this act of kindness.
Knights of Columbus
I want to encourage every man in our parish from the age of 18 on up to consider joining the Knights of Columbus. This is a wonderful group of men who do many things in our local community, but also around the world for the betterment of the faith. The list of their generosity and hard work is too long to list, but the rewards are clearly visible. The most important work the Knights do is to strengthen the faith within the family. I urge you to not only join, but further encourage those who are already members of the Knights of Columbus to become even more active within our local councils. Your presence and dedication are a source of strength for all of us. Rededicate yourself to or join for the first time the Knights of Columbus.
Halloween
People feel various things about Halloween, but I think that it can be another opportunity for evangelization to the greater community. I want to urge you to suggest to people that they stop by the Trunk or Treat event at Holy Family on Halloween night and to stop by the rectory as well that night. We need to get people feeling comfortable being around the church and seeing us as really part of the community if we want them to come to church. We need to help them see that we are here everyday and not just Sundays. There is a reason that I put a saying on every candy bar I give out that is positive about faith in God. Maybe one child or parent will read it and start coming back to mass more frequently. You may want to consider doing the same. Thank you for your help in spreading the good word about our parishes.
Also, don't forget to fill out the candy gram form if you have a student away at college or away serving our country in the military.
Have a great week.

Q. Why are lay-ministers of the Eucharist considered extraordinary?
A. Perhaps your question lies in a misunderstanding of the word extraordinary as it pertains to administering the Eucharist? We are all extraordinary in that we are made in the image and likeness of God our Creator.
Many things in this world are extraordinarily wonderful. However, we need to think of this word as two words: extra-ordinary.
When it comes to the celebration of the Mass and taking Holy Communion to the sick and homebound there needs to be a sufficient number of ministers so that the body and blood of the Lord may be distributed in a timely, reverent and orderly manner. Bishops, priests and deacons distribute Holy Communion by virtue of their office as ordinary ministers of the Body and Blood of the Lord.
When the size of the congregation or the time constraints of the bishop, priest, or deacon make it impractical or impossible to minister distribution of the Eucharist in a timely, orderly fashion, then extra–ordinary ministers can fill the need. Extra ordinary ministers of Holy Communion receive sufficient spiritual, theological, and practical preparation to fulfill this role with knowledge and reverence, but they are not ordained ministers. (General Instruction of the Roman Missal 162)

Fall Clean Up at St. Michael Cemetery November 4th
Mass - 8am Cemetery clean-up - 9am
November is the month in which Catholics remember those who have joined the Communion of Saints. In order to keep Saint Michael’s Cemetery a beautiful and dignified resting place for the deceased members of our parish family, it requires a cleaning twice a year. Following morning Mass at Saint Augustine at 8:00 a.m. Saturday, November 4 (November 11 in case of rain), the annual fall cleaning of Saint Michael’s Cemetery will take place. The clean-up will begin at 9:00 a.m. During the clean-up all debris and dried foliage will be removed. Trees and shrubs will be trimmed as well. This will prepare the cemetery for the placement of winter decorations, i.e., grave blankets, wreaths, etc., which takes place later in the fall. Some of the volunteers will be tasked to help clean a portion of the newly acquired section of the cemetery (formerly the Holmberg property). Please bring your work gloves, rakes, shovels, wheelbarrows, etc.
It is my hope we have a good showing of parishioners to help us clean our beautiful cemetery on Saturday, November 4th. If you have any questions, please contact me at (810) 543-1838.
Sincerely, Joe Stevens

COLLECTION FOR
OUR SERVICE MEN AND WOMEN
Throughout the month of October, we will be collecting white socks for men and women, deodorant for men and women, packages of gum, hard candy, granola bars and Rice Krispy treats for our Service men and women. We will also have two weekends in October where we will have Patriotic note
cards available for you to write a personal message to individuals in our Armed Forces as well as notes for our Veterans. We will make sure they get to our Armed Forces and Veterans. The Archdiocese wants each church to do a service project so we thought that this was a way to show our love and support to those who protect and have protected US. In these troubled times, it is a humble way to say THANK YOU. There will be boxes in the back of church and the Life Center for your donations. In no way is this meant to be a hardship to anyone. Please do what you can for our brave brothers and sisters. May God Bless all of you for your continued support of our Christian Service projects.

Third Graders Host School Mass
Every grade has something to look forward. Second graders make their First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion. There are many firsts in third grade, and one of them happened last week. On Wednesday, the students hosted their first school Mass. That means the third graders read the introduction, First Reading, Psalm, and intercessions. They were also the greeters, ushers, and brought up the offertory gifts.
Students started practicing their readings the week before so that they could pronounce all the hard words. Then on Monday and Tuesday, we practiced the whole Mass at church so all the third graders would know what to do. On the day of our Mass, many of the parents make special arrangements to come to church to see their children in their new role. That Wednesday morning, the students were really excited, but also very nervous. In the end, they all did a great job. Those who did not get an opportunity this time are looking forward to our Mass in November so they will get a turn.
If you ever get the chance to come to a Mass on Wednesday morning at St. Augustine, you will see our students in action.
