MISSION STATEMENT:

“Growing in Grace, Gratitude and Giving”

May 20, 2018 - Pentecost Sunday Gospel Meditation

Encourage Deeper Understanding of Scripture

Today we celebrate the “birthday of the Church!” Pentecost is described in the first reading from the Acts of the Apostles. But before the great driving wind and tongues of fire empowering the Disciples, the Holy Spirit had already arrived. The Gospel for today’s Mass during the day is from John 20. Jesus appears to the fearful disciples after his resurrection. He first speaks a message of calm. “Peace be with you.” The apostles “rejoiced when they saw the Lord.” When the enthusiastic response settles down, Jesus “breathed on them and said to them ‘Receive the Holy Spirit.’”

This action is Trinitarian, and it has happened before. If you turn your Bible back to the beginning, you’ll read: “The Lord God formed man out of the clay of the ground and blew into his nostrils the breath of life, and so many became a living being” (Genesis 2:7). In the Garden of Eden, we see God’s first, original covenant with man. The breath of life signifies that original indwelling of grace, the special state of likeness and friendship with God before the Fall. Here now, in this locked room, the Apostles receive the long-awaited promise: the very breath of God, new life, a new covenant.

In the pairing of these two readings-the Pentecost experience in Acts and the breath of Jesus in John’s Gospel - we see that the coming of the Holy Spirit is not only an empowering, it is an indwelling. We have each received the breath of grace in our baptism. It is confirmed, strengthened, and deepened in each reception of the sacraments. If we persevere in virtue, the spirit of God is alive in us, inspiring our actions of love. This Pentecost Sunday, how is the breath of God alive in you?

For these last 50 days the Scriptures have been focusing on the power of the Resurrection and how the Apostles went forth proclaiming the Gospel of Good News to the World. Pentecost is both an end and a beginning. As an end it marks the conclusion of the Easter Season and our reading from the Acts of the Apostles and begins the work of the people of God with the power and gifts of the Holy Spirit. Pentecost is an exuberant moment in the history of the Church. The outflow of grace can be palpably felt in the words marking the event. The power and force of the Holy Spirit mark each person as a vessel of grace with spiritual gifts that can neither be controlled nor contained. The Spirit of God

invades our being and calls us to move forward with absolute trust in God’s Word and with the knowledge that we are the ones who bring Jesus Christ to others. Pentecost is God’s call to us to be confident, faithful witnesses and inspired disciples of the Lord. As the early church went forth with confidence and trust, so too, we move forward with confidence and trust in the Lord. Our task is no different from the first disciples: we go forth to proclaim the Word of God and form peoples hearts anew (make disciples) which reveal in concrete time and space, how God is working in the world with us and through us. We are the people who bring Christ to others. We are the people who work for justice and truth. We are the people who help and assist the wounded and displaced. We are the people who offer our gifts in service to the community. We are the people who never forget that God is the center of our lives and in Him there is peace. We are the people with whom the Spirit of God resides. As we celebrate Pentecost in the Church, here is a prayer that outlines the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit and asks each one of us to be open to the workings of the Holy Spirit in our lives.

Christ Jesus, before ascending into heaven, You promised to send the Holy Spirit to Your apostles and disciples. Grant that the same Spirit may perfect in our lives the work of Your grace and love.

Grant us the Spirit of Fear of The Lord that we may be filled with a loving reverence toward You.

The Spirit of Piety that we may find peace and fulfillment in the service of God while serving others;

The Spirit of Fortitude that we may bear our cross with You and, with courage, overcome the obstacles that interfere with our salvation;

The Spirit of Knowledge that we may know You and know ourselves and grow in holiness;

The Spirit of Understanding to enlighten our minds with the light of Your truth;

The Spirit of Counsel that we may choose the surest way of doing Your will, seeking first the Kingdom;

Grant us the Spirit of Wisdom that we may aspire to the things that last forever; Teach us to be Your faithful disciples. Amen

Knights of Columbus Honors Military Service Members

Among the most cherished tenets of the Knights of Columbus organization are love of God and honor for country. Each Memorial Day weekend your K of C Father Kosco Council at Prince of Peace honors parishioners and relative members in the military service of the United States; active duty, retired or deceased. Memorial American military service

banners and American flags are placed prominently in front of the Church and along the front drive. Each American flag has a nametag attached to indicate the military service person submitted for this recognition.

This year, Memorial Day weekend is recognized as May 26 and 27, 2018. The Prince of Peace Military Member Book will be located in the gathering space from May 1 to May 22 for parishioners to post the names of their military members. This book will be the data base for preparation of the flag nametags, so please post the names of your military service member as soon as possible.

Interested parishioners are invited to assist the Boy Scouts and the Knights in the preparation and placing of the flags on Saturday May 26, starting at 9 AM and lasting about 3 hours. This simple practice is becoming more inclusive each year and demonstrates how much our military service people mean to us. The Knights will also assist you in proper disposal of your damaged American flag. Just place it in the designated container located in the Church gathering space.

CSA 2018: Opening the Doors to

Grow in Christ

As you are aware, the Catholic Services Appeal (CSA) funds important ministries, programs, and services that each day benefit thousands of faithful throughout the Archdiocese of Detroit, including Prince of Peace parishioners. I am thankful for all the Archdiocese is able to provide parishes because of the CSA, as we could not possibly accomplish as much on our own.

Our parish’s CSA target for 2018 is $121,000. If we exceed our target, 100% of the excess will be returned directly to our parish. This is why the CSA is the best time to give additional gifts to our parish. We plan to use these funds to replace the main church doors steps and railings as the concrete is crumbling badly and railings are rusting through.

Please be generous to the CSA. You can give online throughout website home-page or through the pledge card sent to you or in the Gathering Space of the church.

If you wish to know more about the CSA there is a 4 ½ minute video from the AOD that is quite well done which shows the many ways CSA touches the lives of our people. It’s worth looking at.

Sacred Heart Major Seminary

Archbishop Allen H. Vigneron will ordain three men to the priesthood for the Archdiocese of Detroit at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament this Saturday, May 19.

Deacons Mark Livingston and Christopher Muer prepared to become our shepherds at Sacred Heart Major Seminary, which is the Archdiocese’s college and graduate seminary. Deacon John Maksym prepared at Pope St. John XXIII National Seminary in Boston. Your CSA gifts support our seminarians in formation as well as the permanent diaconate program.

Sacred Heart’s student body also includes lay women and men earning graduate and undergraduate degrees and diplomas in religious studies at the seminary to serve in parish ministry throughout the Archdiocese.

For more information about this and other CSA-funded ministries, programs, and services, please go to www.aod.org.

Our Challenge: Quick!!! Look at the graphic below. What do you see first?

GODISNOWHERE Most of us will see “God is nowhere” first. But take more time with it, and you will see “God is now here.”

Participants took part in this interactive activity at a recent Christian Service Coordinators’ retreat focusing on “Making Time for Jesus.” Right off the bat, the presenter made it clear that it wasn’t going to be a day spent on telling us how to find God and put Him in our lives because He is already there. Instead, we would learn about making time to recognize that He is there.

How often do you hear someone say any variation of “I’m busy”? They may be suffering from “hurry sickness.” (Yes, you can actually Google that term!) As our presenter explained, some people are drawn to busyness, to a hurried life. It makes them feel important. But being busy doesn’t give us a chance to stop and take a look at ourselves, at what’s going on, especially inside. It doesn’t give us a chance to nurture our relationship with God. We don’t need to go looking for Him. The challenge is remembering that God is with us always and everywhere, especially in our busy lives.

Easier said than done, right? Actually, it can be as easy as just paying attention to how we begin and end our day. We have to move from “God is nowhere” to “God is now here.”

We could begin our day with gratitude for what we’ve been given. What we focus on is what will give us strength and energy and direction for the day. Before even getting out of bed, try taking the first few moments of your day to choose gratitude and choose God. And we could end our day with thanksgiving. One suggestion was to start a gratitude journal, to become part of our bedtime routine. Look back on your day, and write down three or four things you are thankful for. They don’t have to be big things, just things that made our day or life better. And don’t worry about grammar, punctuation, or spelling, since the journal is for your eyes only. By the time you put away the journal, climb under the covers, and switch off the light, you’ll have praised God for his goodness, and will be in a better frame of mind for drifting off into dreamland. (from Nancy Steele, Christian Service Coordinator)

RCIA All Are Welcome Here

Are you interested in learning more about the Catholic faith? Do you have friends or acquaintances who

are questioning what Catholicism is all about? Were you baptized but never formed in the Catholic faith? If so, Prince of Peace welcomes you to enter into the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA).

RCIA helps adults grow in their relationship with God and become familiar with Catholic teachings and practices. In short, RCIA is a journey in which conversion of the heart brings you closer to Jesus. Sound scary? Just remember, if you invite Christ into your life, He will be there every step of the way. And so will Prince of Peace. Give us a call.

Why Do We Do That? Catholic Traditions Explained

Question: How do we know when we receive the Holy Spirit?

Answer: My brothers and I discovered something as we got older. There’s a little bit of dad in us. Each time we catch ourselves using one of his gestures, expressions, or comments about a meal, we say, “I’m getting more like Dad!” Many laughs and good-natured kidding have come out of it. Mom loves it, and so does Dad, although I doubt he’d admit it!

When we are confirmed, we receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit. There is no radical change in us that makes us seem suddenly different. Over a period of time, we come to see that there is a little bit of the Spirit in us. We catch ourselves using the gifts, and often end up wondering where a bit of wisdom came from, or why we were so patient or we feel an intensity in our prayer. Perhaps we fell drawn to deepen our spiritual life or found courage in witnessing to our faith. That’s when we know we have received the Holy Spirit. WE take on his image. Yes, we grow in age, grace, and wisdom, but we also grow in our awareness and understanding of the working of God in our life. We become more godlike, realizing we’re getting more and more like God. Our thoughts, words, and actions carry that quality and others, too, see it in us. You might call it holiness. But be confident! There’s a little bit of him in all of us.

An age-appropriate Liturgy of the Word is offered for children ages 4 through 2nd grade. Children’s Liturgy of the Word is offered the First and Third Sunday’s of the month during the 10:00 a.m. Mass.

No pre-registration is necessary. All children are welcome and encouraged to attend. Children are invited to celebrate the Liturgy of the Word in a way specifically designed for their age group. They listen to the same Scripture readings as the rest of the assembly, and are taught a simplified main message of the readings and are encouraged to share that message with their parents after Mass.

For additional information or to get involved, please contact Linda Plotkowski, in the Worship Office at [email protected] or call 248-681-1410.

The Gift of a Relic Sacred Heart receives relic of Blessed Solanus Casey

By Samantha Yee On April 16, 2018, Sacred Heart Major Seminary received a relic of Blessed Solanus Casey as a gift from the Capuchin Franciscan Province of St. Joseph. The first-class relic, which is a small bone fragment encased in a silver reliquary, was gifted to Sacred Heart during Evening Prayer and all present had the opportunity to venerate it. In the future, the relic will be placed in a permanent location in the main chapel of Sacred Heart as a visible object for veneration and a help to the devotion of the seminary community. Father Solanus Casey, who died in 1957 at the age of eighty-six, was recently declared Blessed in a beatification ceremony that put him one step and one miracle away from being declared a Catholic saint. A Franciscan friar and co-founder of the Capuchin Soup Kitchen in Detroit, he was much beloved by the people of Detroit whom he served. “Making this gift to Sacred Heart was a beautiful way to express and honor the close bond between the Capuchin Order and the Archdiocese of Detroit,” said Father Charles Fox, director of graduate seminarians and director of Liturgy at Sacred Heart. “Blessed Solanus embodies for us what it means to love the sick and the poor here in the city of Detroit, and it is precisely his quiet example of love that has inspired the multitudes.” Sixty thousand people packed Ford Field for Blessed Solanus Casey’s beatification Mass last November, to celebrate a man who cared for so many in the archdiocese. His life and service to the poor has always had a lasting impact on many of the seminarians. “This is for the seminary a great moment of joy. We are very blessed to have the opportunity to receive the relic of Blessed Solanus Casey, in a very particular way into the very heart of this seminary, into our chapel,” said Monsignor Todd J. Lajiness, president and rector of Sacred Heart. He went on to cite Blessed Solanus as a great role model for seminarians. “He is a wonderful example of priestly humility, priestly holiness, and a zeal for souls and especially the poor.” Furthermore, Blessed Solanus continues to inspire those called to the priesthood within the Archdiocese of Detroit and beyond, particularly in his devotion to the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist and in the perseverance of his studies. “Blessed Solanus was known to spend long hours praying before the tabernacle, even late into the night. He drew his strength from our Eucharistic Lord, and it is essential that we priests and seminarians do likewise,” said Father Fox. In addition, Brother Richard Merling, O.F.M., Cap., pointed out in his presentation of the relic on April 16 that Blessed Solanus encountered difficulties with his studies. “He struggled through his seminary days and I think that it is a wonderful message to all of you seminarians to be patient and hang on,” said Brother Merling. “Don’t give up too quickly on things because the spirit of God will be there to help you, whatever your needs are, especially in your studies.” The life of Blessed Solanus Casey offers a real-life example of a man striving for holiness in our own archdiocese. He had a great love for the diocesan priesthood and had even been a diocesan seminarian at one time, with two brothers who were diocesan priests. The gift of this relic fits perfectly with Sacred Heart Major Seminary’s desire to form holy priests for service in dioceses and religious communities, and it is a great honor to share this gift as a permanent fixture in our chapel.

Prince of Peace Contemporary Choir Lends Their Voice

Your Prince of Peace Parish Choir ‘Almost There,’ enhanced our Confirmation liturgy on Saturday, May 5th. The choir usually sings at the Sunday 10:00 a.m. Mass, however they wished to be involved in the parish Confirmation Mass and welcoming the Confirmandi.

The Choir’s energy and spirit came through the beautiful music they sang with excellent musicians to back them up. Thank you choir for all your time and talent and giving over the years!

We need your voice in our choir.

It’s very easy to join, No-Try-Outs are asked of you, just remember singing is mandatory and breathing is optional.

If you have any questions, please see me, Dave Hansen after one of the liturgies.

If you are the body and members of Christ, then it is your sacrament that is placed on the table of the Lord; it is your sacrament that you

receive. To that which you are you respond “Amen” (yes, it is true!) and by responding to it you assent to it. For you hear the word “the Body of Christ” and respond “Amen”. Be then a member of the Body of Christ that your “Amen” may be true.

St. Augustine

We invite you to learn more about being a Eucharistic Minister on Tuesday, May 22th at 7:00 pm in the Church. Contact Linda for more information or to register at 248-681-9424 ext. 20. To be an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion at Prince of Peace, you must be a registered member of the parish and be fully initiated into the church.

Have you ever wondered why the church calls Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, Extraordinary?

By virtue of his sacred ordination, the Bishop or Priest offers the sacrifice in the person of Christ, the Head of the Church. He receives gifts of bread and wine from the faithful, offers the sacrifice to God, and returns to them the very Body and Blood of Christ, as from the hands of Christ himself. Thus Bishops and Priests are considered the ordinary ministers of Holy Communion.*

In the distribution of Communion, the Priest may be assisted by other Priests who happen to be present. If such Priests are not present and there is a truly large number of communicants, the Priest may call upon extraordinary ministers to assist him.**

Be at Peace

Do not look forward in fear to the changes of life; rather, look to them, with full hope that as they arise, God, whose very own you are, will lead you safely through all things; and when you cannot stand it, God will carry you in His arms. Do not fear what may happen tomorrow; the same everlasting Father, who cares for you today, will take care of you then and every day. He will either shield you from suffering, or will give you unfailing strength to bear it. Be at peace, and put aside all anxious thoughts and imagination.

St. Francis de Sales

Prayer for our troops - All-powerful and ever-living God, when Abraham left his native land and departed from his people you kept him safe through all his journeys. Protect these soldiers. Be their constant companion, strength and refuge in every adversity. Guide them, O Lord, that they may return home in safety. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

“Grant them eternal rest, O Lord, and let

Perpetual light shine upon them.”
