The May Knight of the Month Frank has been the chairman and backbone of the Council BINGO committee. During the last year Frank has had the bingo financial records updated and corrected. He has instituted new games, rearranged the complete bingo schedule of games and working 10-20 (and sometimes more) hours per week to get the bingo program back on track. Our revenues are up along with charitable contributions. This past month, we approved over $9500 in charity requests. BUT this is only one part of Frank’s work at BIC. You will find him there almost daily repairing one thing or another, and he also will be found in the kitchen cooking meals like the one he and Horace Scott prepared for the Service awards Banquet. Congratulations to Frank Cuffe, Bishop Peter Ireton Council Knight of the Month (GK Bruce Alt)

The May Family of the Month Natalie is the current vice-president and long time member of the Bishop Ireton Ladies Auxiliary. She can be found manning the ticket table of most council functions, sitting at her regular seat at Wednesday night bingo, and always at a ladies meeting. We appreciate the time and energy she continually gives to support the council and ladies auxiliary. Congratulations to Natalie Bradshaw and her “extended council family” (GK Bruce Alt)

From the Financial Secretary’s Desk

It was announced at the March meeting that there would be no Third Degree exemplification at Saint Edward’s this June. This has not happened in at least the past 25 years. Therefore, I am considering getting as many eligible candidates that can travel on Saturday, June 9th, for a special “road trip” to the George Brent Council #5332 in Manassas. Eligible candidates are members who already have taken the 2nd Degree or who will have taken it (I’ll be working with our District Deputy to get at least one on the calendar) prior to the date. We may have to go in a caravan and it may take several cars and volunteers to drive. I will provide more details as they are worked out. Vivat Jesus! RS Prebish, PGK FINSEC 6189

Military Retiree News…

A House subcommittee expected to vote soon on whether to recommend raising retiree TRICARE fees sharply over the next five years heard some compelling testimony against the move Wednesday. Retired Air Force Col. Steve Strobridge, co-chair of The Military Coalition, a consortium of 34 military associations and veterans groups, traded debate points with Dr. Jonathan Woodson, assistant secretary of defense for health affairs, before the armed services panel on personnel. Strobridge attacked the Obama administration's premise that raising TRICARE fees on military retirees to help balance defense spending cuts in the current budget crisis does not break faith with the force. "If keeping faith means no changes for today's troops on retirement, than it's breaking faith to raise their [health] fees by [up to] $2000. That's no different from a $2000 retired pay cut," he said. "They say military retirees pay far less for health care than civilians do," Strobridge added. "Whenever somebody gives me that argument I ask: If the military deal was so great, are you willing to pay what they did to earn it? Would you sign up to spend the next 20 to 30 years being deployed to Iraq, Afghanistan or any other garden spot the government want to send you to," he asked. "Military people pay far steeper premiums for health coverage than any civilian ever has or ever will." Woodson warned that if Congress blocks the TRICARE fee hikes, which would save almost $13 billion over five years, then active duty strength would have to be cut by 30,000 to 50,000 more troops than already planned. The surgeons general of the Army, Navy and Air Force also testified but were not drawn into the TRICARE fee debate. ” Stay tuned…

Bingo – A challenge to manage…

We have challenges which we can simply overcome with a bit of cooperation amongst ourselves. Certainly our Bingo Teams are the biggest hurdles we need to jump over. Without your help, we cannot do the games. Some teams are in dire need of help. You can do it – one, if you are able, secondly – if you are willing. It takes a simple telephone call to a team captain and ask if they need help. If they have a full team, you will be directed to a team captain who needs the help the most. Or you can call our Bingo Manager, Frank Cuffe. He will gladly tell you which team needs you the most. Volunteering can be good, both for you and for the council. We need to think about it. Our bingo monies depend upon us to do the right thing and

that is to keep the games going. If we were to hire additional help, there would be less monies for BIC and the Council. Which do you want?

A Note on KOFC Insurance …

Different life stages, changing needs Paying for college for your children may be one of your family’s current needs. You may be concerned about a comfortable, worry-free retirement. You may wonder if needing costly long-term care will deplete your hard-earned assets. You want to have something to leave for your wife, children or grandchildren. At some point you may have had all of these needs on your mind. Over time, these thoughts make way for others as your needs evolve, your finances change and you get older. What is important to you at age 20, may not be at 30, or 45, or 65. What is the best way to be prepared for these changes before they happen? One of the easiest ways to be financially ready for changes that come with different life stages is to meet annually with your Knights of Columbus agent and address the needs that his analysis uncovers. This can help you be ready to face the financial challenges and issues on the road ahead. During that annual visit, I’ll take the time to review your needs, goals and budget. I’ll update all beneficiaries on your policies and be sure your coverage meets your needs. I’ll recommend a program of life insurance, long-term care insurance and guaranteed income annuities that will help you rest easy at night. Whatever your needs, whatever your concerns, whatever your stage in life, I can help. I’m at 804-377-9110 or my cell is 804-873-8732. [email protected] Don Principe

Our Spring Party at St. Joseph’s Home for the Aged was April 13th. Thank you to Noel and Betty Owers for joining us with their sheet music of the old songs that they do so well. Noel played the piano and Betty led the residents in singing. Our guests really enjoyed these real Golden Oldies. Fran Craig made favors (cute little baskets) for the residents with the help of Clara and Wilma. These favors first helped brighten our decorations for the party and then went off with the guests. We served cake and diet cookies and diet lemonade. Thank you to Fran Craig, Clara Agosto, Wilma Satterfield, and Debbie Hubley for spreading joy that afternoon. I’m looking forwarback again next year. On Monday, May 21st we will hold the crowat 6:30 PM, and then our meeting will start directly afterwards. Our ceremony will include songs, Prayers and then Julia Cooke will crown Mary. Everyone; please bring Flowers to place at Mary’s feet. Sign up to help with KOVAR.
