We continue to look for individuals who would like to join our team in building a solid foundation of faith for our children and those seeking full membership in the Church. STEWARDSHIP — MUSEUM PARISH CATALOG TEAM VOLUNTEERS

Carmel Mission Basilica Museum Parish Catalog Team Volunteers

The Carmel Mission Basilica is blessed to be steward to a multitude of precious artifacts.

Have you ever wondered how the Mission Museum keeps track of all its important historic items?

One important way in which we work to preserve and protect our collection is through the support and efforts of our Parish Catalog Team.

This team is organized by Dotty Weisheit and includes Karen Sebok, Michael Bachik, Susan Holtam.

This important group of parish volunteers meets 1-2 times a month in the Munrus Museum. They photograph, measure, and describe each artifact. The catalog team also researches and records any known historical context. This information is then added to the Carmel Mission Basilica Museum records. Once this data is prepared it is then sent to our Mission Archivist, Mary Anne Pirotte and our Mission Museum Manager, Jewel Gentry. Mary Ann inputs the data gathered by the catalog team into a central inventory program. This insures that no information is lost and there is always two electronic records available the Mission Collections record available.

If you are interested in helping us with this interesting and important volunteer team, please contact Dotty Weisheit at [email protected].

Or call Jewel Gentry Museum Manager,(831) 238-5254.

The Light Shines on in the Darkness by Fr Spitzer. DOCENT CORNER

Fr. Fermin Francisco Lasuén

There are 4 graves on the left side of the sanctuary. Fr. Serra was buried there but who are these other Franciscan graves? The one to the right of Serra is Fr. Fermín Francisco de Lasuén who was born on June 7th, 1736 in Vitoria, Spain.

He joined the Franciscan order in 1752 and volunteered to work in the Spanish missions in the Americas. After working in the Sierra Gorda missions, he was sent to Baja California in 1768 and then to the newer missions in Alta California with Fr. Serra a year later. He worked at missions at San Gabriel, San Juan Capistrano, San Luis Obispo, Carmel and San Diego. Fr. Serra gave the most difficult mission posts to Fr. Lasuén precisely because he considered him the best missionary he could find.

After Fr. Serra's death in 1784, Carmel remained the headquarters of the missions. Fr. Paloú became the temporary Presidente until 1785 and Fr. Lasuén became the 2nd Presidente at the age of 49. Lasuén then moved to the Carmel Mission which developed considerably under his direction and stayed there until he died in 1803.

He was Presidente for 18 years and he personally founded 9 of the 21 missions in Alta California: Santa Barbara, La Purísima, Santa Cruz, Soledad, San José, San Juan Bautista, San Miguel, San Fernando and San Luis Rey. He also expanded many of the earlier missions and it was under his administration that the California Missions reached their greatest prosperity.

Because of his office as Presidente, Fr. Lasuén met a number of people who later wrote about him. British Sea Captain George Vancouver described him in 1792 as having gentle manners and gave him a small pipe organ which was the first organ at the Carmel Mission.

Fr. Lasuén was a capable administrator but he struggled with loneliness. He never adjusted well to life in California and he repeatedly asked for retirement or transfer, stating that only obedience kept him here. He was never happy in California.

He was a dedicated missionary and died at age 67 at the Carmel Mission on June 26, 1803.

This insight into the Mission history was provided by the Carmel Mission Docent Association.

ANNOUCEMENTS — DOCENT CORNER

Altar Society For over 84 years, the Altar Society at Carmel Mission Basilica, has faithfully attended to the needs of the ‘table of the Lord’. Weekly, team members of this organization, take care of the washing and ironing of the linens used at the Eucharist. Through the donation of minimal dues, we also purchase on occasion new altar cloths, and provide an annual retreat day for the community.

In addition, throughout the year the Altar Society hosts luncheon events

open to all in the parish. To continue this wonderful tradition at Carmel Mission, we NEED YOU to join us. We invite you to come visit our table after Mass and learn about the many ways you can be involved.”

Theology on Tap! Jesus My Savior! I Believe!!

And My LORD! Wait, What???

Many of us are quick to claim Jesus Christ as our Savior. That’s the easy part – we only have to accept his offer of salvation and wait for him to do his work. But Jesus is also our Lord, the One who directs our lives and rules over us. That’s harder for us swallow – we want to think we’re in charge around here. Sometimes it takes a personal crisis to learn the power and joy in giving ourselves over to God, in recognizing our own weakness, and in calling Jesus, as Thomas did, “My Lord and my God!” Brian McAuley, of Cornerstone New Hope Ministries, will tell us of his own journey from self-centered sinner to devoted follower of the Lord Jesus. Come and hear his amazing story!

Sleeping Saint Joseph

St. Joseph has always been known as a hard worker. He has always been known for his beautiful carpentry but that was not the only gift he was blessed with. Since before the birth of Jesus, God has sent angels down to St. Joseph to relay messages to him in his sleep. God depends on St. Joseph to help relay messages and answer prayers. As a carpenter, St. Joseph learned the importance of concentration and perfection. That is the reason we must have patience when waiting for our prayers to be answered. St. Joseph takes each prayer he receives seriously and works hard to answer them the best way possible. “I have great love for Saint Joseph, because he is a man of silence and strength. On my table I have an image of Saint Joseph sleeping. Even when he is asleep, he is taking care of the Church!” Pope Francis advised people to leave a “note” under the image of the saint for help whenever they have a problem.

All these Statues of Sleeping Joseph are available in the Carmel Museum Store.
