An enchanting singer with a natural sense of swing, Jennifer Salisbury has

made a name of herself among the jazz community with her breezy renditions

of the american songbook. When onstage, she channels the great voices of the

‘40s and ‘50s guiding her audience in a time-traveling roller-coaster of emo-

tions, navigating the history of jazz. Her own songwriting is deeply influenced

by the golden era of jazz; it’s almost impossible to tell apart the songs that she

wrote herself, from the classic repertoire she draws from to tell the Unspoken

Rule story; songs immortalized by Billie Holiday, Chet

Baker, Doris Day, Benny Goodman, in unexpected ar-

rangements by James Mustafa, turning the project

into a balancing act between the vintage and modern

esthetics.

HISTORY HIT…….. WHAT IS A JAZZ CONVENTION

This long-established event is held annually

between Christmas and New Year. The First

Australian Jazz Convention was conceived as

a private post-war reunion and four-day jam

session where Australian jazz musicians, en-

thusiasts, wives, girlfriends and friends from

Melbourne, Adelaide, Hobart, Sydney, Bris-

bane and Perth gathered in Melbourne on

Boxing Day 1946 to play, listen and discuss

their music. It was a great success and a re-

peat event, leading to permanency, was held

in 1947. Participating musicians receive no

fee and each Convention is organised and run

by a local voluntary committee with guidance

and assistance from the Convention Trustees

and a Steering Committee. The AJC, which is

not a festival, has been held without inter-

ruption in pre-selected cities and towns in all

Australian states since its inception in 1946.

BAND REVIEW ……………… Bob Scurry ULTRAFOX 19th August 2018-08-20 It’s always a pleasure to listen to Ultrafox, one of the premier bands in Australia that plays in the gypsy jazz/swing or manouche style, as exemplified by Django Reinhardt and the Quintet of The Hot Club of France from the mid 1930s into the early 50s. The band is named after an early tune of Reinhardt’s which in turn was inspired by their then record compa-

ny Ultraphone. Ultrafox , led by guitarist Peter Baylor, has had a varying personnel over the years. The cur-rent line-up which appeared at the Ballarat Jazz Club on 19th August consists of Baylor, Ash-ley Kluss rhythm guitar, Steve Temple double bass, Brennan Hamilton-Smith on clarinet and Jo Abbot on piano accordion. Hamilton-Smith plays with an elegance and fluency which per-fectly fits the band style and Jo Abbot ( who is also a fine pianist ) plays her instrument in perfect accord ( pun intended ) with the group, filling out the sound with a natural swing both in solo and harmonic underpinning. The first two sets were mainly of well known songs from the jazz repertoire ( Dinah, Sweet Sue, Pennies from Heaven etc. ), with special features for Abbot on the French classic “J’attendrai” and Hamilton- Smith on a beautifully posed “Body and Soul”

Less familiar pieces were played in the third set. These included a gypsy waltz “ Chez Jacquet” , a nice boppish number “Bop,Skip and Jump”, and a highlight of the day of Brennan Hamilton-Smith’s rendition of “Crepuscule”. The performance concluded with a romping version of the perennial “Sheik of Araby”, to round off an afternoon of wonderful, swinging mu-sic. The only downside was not of the performance but the presentation. The band members, apart from the bassist, were all seated, creating a viewing difficulty for those at the back of the room. Perhaps the Club should investigate the possibility of having a stage or platform for bands, maybe in consultation with the Golf Club. Possibly Ballarat Events could advise in this regard.
