Padres mailbag: Can Franchy Cordero keep it up? Dennis Lin

The 28-42 Padres are in the Windy City, where the reigning World Series champion will be seeking revenge. San Diego ended May with a three-game sweep of the Chicago Cubs at Petco Park.

Padres lefty Clayton Richard will pitch the opener, facing the team that released him last August. Back in San Diego, the veteran has rediscovered success as a starter, while the 34-34 Cubs are experiencing a bit of a post-October malaise. Richard’s 1.4 Wins Above Replacement, as measured by FanGraphs, would rank second in Chicago’s rotation this year. Jon Lester (1.7 WAR) starts opposite Richard tonight.

Let’s get to the mailbag. As always, you can submit questions on Twitter or email me.

If you go back a few years, Cordero was drawing significant attention after an impressive stateside debut in rookie ball. Then he struggled in 2014 and 2015, and had to move off short. After taking to the outfield, he rebounded in 2016. At the same time, though, a bunch of high-profile prospects joined the organization.

You’re right about the peripheral numbers. Cordero got off to a terrific start, but at the moment, his batting average on balls in play is an unsustainably high .472. Meanwhile, after Sunday’s golden sombrero, he’s struck out in nearly 40 percent of his plate appearances.

Still, he’s only 22 and clearly possesses the tools to at least be a serviceable piece for the future. When center fielder Manuel Margot returns from the disabled list, the Padres could return Cordero to Triple-A El Paso or shift him to left field. Either way, he’ll need regular at-bats to further his development.

He’ll be a 33-year-old free agent after the season, but if the Padres end up moving him, he could bring back something decent.

Quietly, Stammen has been one of the Padres’ most valuable arms since his rough April. Over his last 14 appearances, a span of 28 innings, he’s logged a 1.93 ERA while averaging a strikeout per frame. Long relief is an absolute necessity for San Diego, and Stammen has delivered.

It remains too early to say. Josh Naylor, who turns 20 on Thursday, is one of the younger players in the California League. He’s shown progress at the plate this season, hitting .299/.363/.463. He’s unlocked more of his prodigious raw power, upping his slugging percentage by more than 100 points from his 2016 stint with Lake Elsinore.

But, as you alluded to, his defense is in question. While Naylor’s a good athlete for someone his size, he definitely fits the first-base-only profile. To be an above-average player in the majors, he’ll have to mash. We will see.

Page 3: Padres Press Clips - MLB.com...2017/06/19  · Yuliett, Yangervis’ wife, died of cancer-related complications last September. Even after suffering personal tragedy, Solarte has remained

3

As for current Padres first baseman Wil Myers, his struggles this season are a bit concerning, but it’s too early to panic. He’s shown signs of life at the plate recently, and you need way more than 68 games to cast judgment on a long-term extension.

Myers will be 28 in 2019, theoretically still in his prime. So I’ll guess he’s pretty good that year. For 2020, Margot seems like a good bet. He has all the tools to be a true impact player.

Slim to none. Cabrera, a talented prep outfielder from Louisiana, tweeted the following about an hour before the Padres drafted him in the 26th round:

Shortly after the draft concluded, Padres Scouting Director Mark Conner said this: “Truthfully, the commitment to LSU’s pretty strong, but from our relationship and what we’ve scouted of him and how well we know him and knowing we believe in him, we wanted to take him in the draft and see how it all plays out. Whether it’s this year or down the road, we’ll find out.”

Indeed, the final day of the draft is for taking chances. It’s possible Cabrera is a master negotiator for an 18-year-old, and it’s possible the Padres saved enough money early in the draft to tempt him to go pro. But it’s unlikely. At any rate, even if Cabrera doesn’t sign, the Padres will continue tracking his progress in college.

By the way, a few days ago, Cabrera retweeted himself, seemingly reaffirming his pledge to LSU.

Solarte enjoying family weekend with daughters Dennis Lin

For Padres second baseman Yangervis Solarte and his three young daughters, Sunday was their first Father’s Day without Yuliett Pimentel Solarte. Yuliett, Yangervis’ wife, died of cancer-related complications last September.

Even after suffering personal tragedy, Solarte has remained one of the Padres’ most buoyant personalities, as well as a productive player.

Manager Andy Green noted that Solarte’s recent surge at the plate began around the end of the school year. After spending the early portion of the season in Miami with their grandmother, Solarte’s daughters rejoined their father in San Diego.

“He’s life and energy every day,” Green said. “He’s that for his girls. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that his girls finally finished school, came out to San Diego, they’re with him on the road and all of a sudden he’s hitting. His family gives him life and always has.”

After his wife’s passing, and at her urging, Solarte returned to the Padres last fall. He finished the 2016 season with a .286 average, 15 home runs and 71 RBIs — all career highs.

Solarte, who cranked two home runs in Saturday’s 11-inning victory at Miller Park, is hitting .357 (15-for-42) with five homers since June 6. In Sunday’s 2-1 loss, he narrowly missed a two-run homer, sending a drive wide of the right-field foul pole.

“I couldn’t respond to what he responded to the way he did,” Green said. “It’s an immense amount of maturity and immense amount of love for the game and his teammates. I’m very impressed by him and continue to be so.”

Following his second home run Saturday, a go-ahead blast in the top of the 10th, Solarte pounded his chest and pointed to the crowd, where his daughters were sitting.

“That’s why I like to signal and point to the sky for God and for everything that’s happened,” Solarte said afterward. “Everything I do is for them.”

Margot joins El Paso A little more than three weeks after sustaining a right calf strain, center fielder Manuel Margot will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A El Paso on Monday.

Margot, who ran the bases at full speed Saturday, boarded a plane out of Milwaukee on Sunday afternoon. The rookie last played on May 24, exiting that game because of his calf injury. He was hitting .259 with a .305 on-base percentage, four home runs and five steals.

Page 5: Padres Press Clips - MLB.com...2017/06/19  · Yuliett, Yangervis’ wife, died of cancer-related complications last September. Even after suffering personal tragedy, Solarte has remained

5

Margot will serve as El Paso’s designated hitter on the road at Fresno either Monday or Tuesday. On the other day, he will play the field.

Green indicated that, if Margot progresses as hoped, he could come off the disabled list before the end of the month.

“We’re going to at least give him some back-to-back games where he feels good and we know the calf’s feeling the way it should feel,” Green said. “But it’s not some long, drawn-out two week process. I don’t see it going that long.”

Maton being eased in It took less than a week in the majors for Phil Maton to collect his first career save. The date of his next opportunity remains to be seen.

Maton, who was promoted from El Paso last weekend, recorded the final two outs of Saturday’s game. While Green commented that the right-hander’s stuff played up in the closer’s role — “There’s an ease about him in that situation that he’s had throughout his minor league career,” Green said — the Padres aren’t ready to anoint the 24-year-old a late-inning regular just yet.

For now, Brandon Maurer will continue as the primary closer. Green noted that Maton, who also pitched Friday, did not work many back-to-backs while coming up through the farm system.

“Our hope is he pitches for us for a very long time, so he’s going to be more limited than some of the veteran guys who’ve been around the block a little more,” Green said.

Maurer entered in the ninth inning Saturday, preserved a tie by retiring the side, reappeared for the 10th and allowed a game-tying home run. His ERA rose to 6.51, though his 3.28 Fielding Independent Pitching indicates he’s been the victim of some bad luck.

“I think his first inning was outstanding,” Green said. “Asking him for multiple (innings) sometimes, maybe it’s not the best thing to do with him. Just getting one from him and using him in situations he flourishes in, rather than situations that are very unique.”

Notable

Right-hander Trevor Cahill (right shoulder strain) will throw another bullpen session Monday. Barring a setback, he will face live hitters Thursday. “We’d either get him in a (simulated) game setting or three-inning rehab setting, and then probably extend that to a four-inning setting, and then be ready to (activate Cahill),” Green said. “I don’t think we’re looking at a long, drawn-out process for him, either.”

Saturday marked the first time in franchise history the Padres have hit three extra-inning home runs in a single game. They have hit two in extras on 12 occasions, most recently at Miller Park on May 14, 2016.

Padres fall as Brewers' Nelson goes the distance Dennis Lin

Sunday, Luis Perdomo returned to the mound where he made his first big-league start. In the intervening time, he had gone from that two-inning stint to throwing a complete game, from shellshocked rookie to one of the majors’ promising young pitchers.

In the Padres’ 2-1 loss to Milwaukee at Miller Park, the right-hander had the kind of performance that reaffirmed his progress, while still showing he has significant room for growth. Meanwhile, Jimmy Nelson went the distance.

The Brewers starter held the Padres to six singles and two walks as he pitched Milwaukee’s first complete game since 2015. Perdomo wasn’t quite as stingy, yielding a pair of solo home runs, but he managed to limit the damage over six innings.

The former Rule 5 draftee, who first started here May 14, 2016, allowed eight hits and two walks, striking out four. Faced with multiple pressure situations, he did not buckle, as he might have a year ago. While Perdomo was on the mound, the Brewers went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position.

“It was a battle,” Padres manager Andy Green said. “I thought he did a great job getting out of some really threatening innings and minimizing. He was in the trouble the first, the second, the third, the fifth. He navigated a lot of trouble today.”

The foremost example was the bottom of the second. After a trio of singles, the bases were loaded with no outs. Perdomo fielded a comebacker in front of the plate and underhanded the ball to catcher Luis Torrens, starting a 1-2-3 double play. He struck out Nelson to end the inning.

In the bottom of the third, after a leadoff double, a walk and a popout, center fielder Franchy Cordero tracked down a deep drive at the warning track and threw the ball to Erick Aybar. The shortstop relayed it to Perdomo, who had hurried over to second base, completing an 8-6-1 double play.

The Padres turned a third double play in the fifth.

“Some good defense behind (Perdomo),” Green said. “(Cordero) ran a long way to make that catch. Really nice double play between him and Luis Torrens, too. I thought he navigated. Probably didn’t throw strike one as much as I would’ve liked to have seen, but I thought, overall, he gave us a chance to win a baseball game.”

Both of the Brewers’ home runs came in the sixth. The first surprised Perdomo; Hernan Perez had crushed a down-and-in sinker.

Page 7: Padres Press Clips - MLB.com...2017/06/19  · Yuliett, Yangervis’ wife, died of cancer-related complications last September. Even after suffering personal tragedy, Solarte has remained

7

“It was a good pitch,” Perdomo said through an interpreter. “I thought it was a fly ball at first, and it ended up going out.”

The second solo blast was the result of a slider that caught too much of the plate. Manny Piña rounded the bases, having given the Brewers a 2-1 lead.

The Padres had struck first — Cory Spangenberg led off the fifth with an infield single, took second on Nelson’s throwing error and scored on a single by Erick Aybar — but would not again. Nelson finished with 10 strikeouts, reaching double digits for the fourth time in his career. The complete game was the 28-year-old’s first.

“We didn’t really muster many opportunities against Jimmy Nelson today,” Green said. “I thought he was good. He mixed well. I thought he had some erratic command early, but got locked in as the game went on. We let him off the hook early by chasing some pitches outside the zone.”

Since a rare, eight-run blow-up on May 20, Perdomo has posted a 3.03 ERA over his last five starts.

“I think I’ve developed a ton,” Perdomo, 24, said.

Green added: “Those last couple outings, he’s shown the ability to do some different things as well that we need to see for his development and maturation into a middle-of-the-rotation or top-of-the-rotation guy. I feel really good about what he’s accomplished over the last year. Do think there’s some steps ahead for him as he continues to grow, but he’s come a long way.”

Padres' young trio shows potential on

mound

Diaz, Lamet, Perdomo impress Brewers during series at

Miller Park

By Carson Mason / MLB.com | June 18th, 2017

MILWAUKEE -- The Padres dropped their eighth road series in 11 tries this weekend, but their young

rotation made a believer of Brewers manager Craig Counsell.

"They're young guys with very good arms," Counsell said. "They didn't come in with great stat lines, but

they are investing in some talented, young arms and letting them kind of go through their lumps. There's

Major League stuff in those arms, that's for sure."

Miguel Diaz, Dinelson Lamet and Luis Perdomo all flashed impressive stuff while combining for 21

strikeouts against the Brewers. After Sunday's 2-1 loss, Padres manager Andy Green saw a glimpse of the

future from their starts.

"They all got stuff," Green said. "Dinelson Lamet has like ridiculous stuff. There's not many guys in the

game that throw the ball like he does. You've got Diaz out there throwing 98 mph using like half of his

body. He's got so much more inside of him as he continues to mature.

"All three of those guys are really good arms. They're not easy guys to face, and all three of them have a

substantially higher ceiling than they've already achieved."

Of the trio, the 24-year-old Perdomo has the most Major League experience. He took his fourth losing

decision Sunday, but the former Rule 5 draft pick showed his ability to navigate sticky situations with

runners aboard. Perdomo held the Brewers scoreless through five innings, despite Milwaukee putting

runners in scoring position in four of those innings, including a no-out, bases loaded jam in the second.

His first runs allowed came via two solo homers from Hernan Perez and Manny Pina in the sixth.

"I think I did pretty well. I was just trying to be aggressive with my pitches and in those situations get

some double-play balls," Perdomo said through a translator. "I think I've developed a ton. From that point

on, there's been a bunch of progress, and that's why I'm still here."

Page 13: Padres Press Clips - MLB.com...2017/06/19  · Yuliett, Yangervis’ wife, died of cancer-related complications last September. Even after suffering personal tragedy, Solarte has remained

13

"He's come a long way. There's no doubt about it," Green added. "I think those last couple outings, he's

shown the ability to do some different things, as well, that we need to see for his development and

maturation into a middle-of-the-rotation or top-of-the-rotation guy."

Diaz, who was this year's No. 1 overall pick in the Rule 5 draft, was starting in the Brewers organization

for Class A Wisconsin exactly one year before his start Friday. He wasn't fazed facing his former team on

the Major League stage. Meanwhile, the rookie right-hander Lamet needed only 75 pitches to strike out a

career-high 12 batters in the Padres' lone win of the series Saturday. The outing was a testament to his

"ridiculous" stuff, Green said.

"That's the guy we want to see. That guy can be very successful in the big leagues," Green said. "He's

thrown the four-seam by people, but the slider was very, very good [on Saturday]. That pitch, that's a

separator, and that's a pitch a lot of guys just frankly don't have."

Green and the Padres expressed concern for Lamet's command after he allowed seven earned runs in his

previous two starts. But the 24-year-old showed promise for the future Saturday, properly utilizing his

slider and earning his first Major League quality start.

His 12 strikeouts matched the highest for any rookie pitcher in the Majors this season, tying

Cincinnati's Amir Garrett on April 19, 2017, vs. the Orioles. It also marked the second-highest single-

game total for a Padres rookie, behind Oliver Perez's 13 strikeouts in 2002.

Perdomo solid but Padres drop finale to

Crew By Adam McCalvy and Carson Mason / MLB.com | June 18th, 2017

MILWAUKEE -- Jimmy Nelson threw the Brewers' first complete game in nearly two years, and young

dads Hernan Perez and Manny Pina homered for a 2-1 win over the Padres on Father's Day at Miller

Park.

Nelson threw a career-high 118 pitches in his six-hit gem, allowing only one unearned run onErick

Aybar's single in a fifth-inning rally aided by two Brewers errors, including one charged to Nelson. It was

a rare blemish for the 28-year-old right-hander, who walked two and struck out 10 in his first complete

game since 2013 at the Double-A level.

"It was pretty cool going out there [for the ninth inning] and they played the walk-out song, which was

kind of neat," Nelson said. "But at the same time, you have to take a step back and not let your adrenaline

take over. You have to relax and don't try to do too much, try not to overthrow and execute your pitches."

Said Brewers manager Craig Counsell: "He earned his way back out there those last few innings, for

sure."

The Brewers were having trouble manufacturing runs against Padres starter Luis Perdomo, who stranded

runners in scoring position in four of his first five innings, so they started hitting homers instead. Perez

went deep leading off the sixth inning to tie the game at 1-1, and Pina followed two batters later with

another solo shot over the Brewers bullpen in left-center field for the lead.

Still, Perdomo limited the damage to two runs on eight hits in six innings for his fourth quality start in his

last five outings.

"I feel really good about what he's accomplished over the past year," Padres manager Andy Green said. "I

do think there's some steps ahead for him as he continues to grow, but he's come a long way."

Milwaukee has scored its last 15 runs via the long ball, a franchise record. The previous club mark was 14

runs in a row, set by Prince Fielder & Co. in August 2007.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED

So close: Padres second baseman Yangervis Solarte, who hit three home runs in the first two games of

the series, including two on Saturday night, nearly gave the Padres the lead in the eighth when he hit a

first-pitch changeup with a runner aboard for a fly ball that sailed just foul, way down the right-field line.

Nelson, who'd entered the inning at 96 pitches and was facing the heart of the Padres' order for the fourth

time, reclaimed control of the at-bat with his fastball and induced a double-play ground ball to escape the

inning with the Brewers' one-run lead intact.

"Early, I thought it was gone, but after halfway, no," Pina said. "[Solarte] was telling me, 'Ah, you were

scared! It was close, huh?' Yeah, it was close."

That de-escalated quickly: The Brewers had at least one runner in scoring position with nobody out in

each of the first three innings but came up empty each time against Perdomo. In the second, he escaped a

bases-loaded, no-out predicament by converting Orlando Arcia's tapper in front of home plate into a 1-2-

3 double play and striking out Nelson to end the threat. An inning later, the Brewers had runners at first

and second with no outs, but Perez fouled out to the catcher and Travis Shaw's near-home run turned into

an inning-ending double play. Padres center fielder Franchy Cordero made a running catch, slammed

into the wall and threw back to the infield to double up Eric Sogard at second base.

"This is an example of a game where we should have scored more runs, frankly," Counsell said. "I

thought we had an opportunity for more runs, that's for sure. But the home runs were big. That's how

we're scoring right now."

QUOTABLE

"All three of those guys are really good arms. They're not easy guys to face, and all three of them have a

substantially higher ceiling than they've already achieved." -- Green, on the promising young trio of

starters -- Miguel Diaz, Dinelson Lamet and Perdomo -- whom the Padres threw at the Brewers in the

series

Pina, who also hit a go-ahead home run on Mother's Day, became the second Brewer to homer on both

Mother's Day and Father's Day in the same season. Ben Oglivie loved his mom and pop so much that he

did it twice, in 1978 and '82.

"My dad [Omar] told me, 'Don't forget I'm your daddy! Hit one today, too!'" Pina said. "I didn't try to hit a

homer, man, but that happens when you get good contact and see the ball well."

UPON FURTHER REVIEW

The Brewers won a challenge on the very first play of the game after Cordoba was called safe at first base

on a bunt hit. After a two-minute review, that call was overturned and Nelson had his first out.

In the seventh, the Brewers lost a challenge on another close play at first. Second baseman Sogard

charged Cory Spangenberg's soft grounder and made an off-balance throw to a fully stretched Eric

Thames at first, where the call was safe. Replays showed the baseball got there in time, but there was no

good angle to confirm whether Thames held the bag with his foot. The call stood, and Nelson went on to

strand two runners in a scoreless inning.

WHAT'S NEXT

Padres: Veteran starter Clayton Richard will face his former team when the Padres take on the Cubs in a

three-game set at Wrigley Field, beginning at 5:05 p.m. PT. The lefty fell one out shy of pitching a

complete-game shutout in his last start against the Reds on June 13.

Brewers: The Crew will continue their seven-game homestand at Miller Park with a four-game series

against the Pirates. Right-hander Matt Garza will make his second start of the season against the Pirates

at 6:40 p.m. CT. In his first start against them, he allowed only one earned run with zero walks over seven

innings in a no-decision. He is 3-6 with a 4.14 ERA in 14 career starts vs. Pittsburgh.

Maton plans on sending first save ball to

dad

Right-hander closed Saturday's win over Brewers in 11th

inning

By Carson Mason / MLB.com | June 18th, 2017

MILWAUKEE -- Phil Maton will give his dad a memorable gift this Father's Day Weekend. The Padres

reliever notched his first career save in the Padres' 7-5 extra-inning win over the Brewers on Saturday

and said he's planning to send the ball to his parents.

"It feels awesome. It was such an up-and-down game. It's just awesome to walk away with a 'W' there,"

Maton said Saturday. "It's a huge step up from a Triple-A save. There's maybe 5 or 6,000 fans there, but

there's 35,000 here."

The 24-year-old began the 2017 season with Triple-A El Paso and made his big league debut on June 11.

His younger brother, Nick, was selected by the Phillies in the seventh round of the 2017 MLB Draft on

Tuesday, making Maton's save the icing on the cake for his family's incredible week.

Maton replaced Jose Torres with one out in the 11th inning, following Chase d'Arnaud's and Cory

Spangenberg's solo homers in the top half of the frame. The right-hander struck out Hernan

Perez and Lewis Brinson to preserve the Padres' two-run lead.

"I think Maton ends up closing the game [Saturday] circumstantially in extra innings, but I'll say this: His

stuff was better in that role," Padres manager Andy Green said Sunday. "There's an ease about him in that

situation that he's had throughout his Minor League career. That 91 and 92 is now 94, and the swings on

fastballs were even worse than they had been at any point in time since he's been here. No doubt he's

comfortable in that."

Maton and the rest of the Padres took the field in specially designed caps and uniforms Saturday and

Sunday as part of Major League Baseball's initiative to raise awareness and funds for the fight against

prostate cancer. The uniforms incorporated blue into the Padres' regular logo, while the caps are

highlighted by a blue shadow tech heather crown and graphite visor. Royalty payments from the sales of

specialty caps and jerseys will be donated to the Prostate Cancer Foundation and Stand Up To Cancer.

18

This year's efforts also included the annual Prostate Cancer Foundation "Home Run Challenge," which

gave fans the chance to make a one-time monetary donation or pledge for every home run hit by their

favorite MLB Clubs during the time period of Thursday, June 1st through Father's Day, Sunday, June

18th, all the while tracking where their team stacks up in a "Team vs. Team" competition. Every dollar

donated through the Home Run Challenge goes to PCF to fund critical research to defeat prostate cancer.

INJURY UPDATES

• Outfielder Manuel Margot will fly out to Fresno, Calif., to begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A El

Paso on Monday. Margot will serve as the designated hitter Monday and will play in the field Tuesday, or

vice versa, Green said. He will be off with the team on Wednesday and continue rehabbing after that.

Margot was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a strained right calf on May 25. He ran the bases and

took batting practice with the Padres on Saturday in Milwaukee.

• Right-hander Trevor Cahill will throw another bullpen session on Monday and could easily face live

hitters on Thursday, Green estimated. Cahill was placed on the 10-day DL with a right shoulder strain on

May 15, and the Padres skipper said he's gotten every indication that Cahill feels good at this point.

Richard looks to follow gem against Cubs

By Carson Mason / MLB.com | June 18th, 2017

Veteran left-hander Clayton Richard will be in familiar territory Monday when the Padres visit Wrigley

Field to take on the Cubs in a three-game series.

Richard played with the Cubs from 2015-16 and will start opposite fellow southpaw Jon Lester in the

series opener.

In his last start against the Reds on June 13, Richard fell one out shy of the Padres' first shutout since

September 2014. But he'll have to make adjustments to face the Cubs' veteran batters, who are known to

thrive in the strike zone.

"I always look forward to Clayton's starts," Padres manager Andy Green said. "I see it as how he's going

to get good big league hitters out. [The Cubs are] a group of guys you have to beat up in the strike zone.

That's not really his recipe for success, so he's going to have to make some adjustments in order to beat

those guys. I think he's proven time and time again now that he can make adjustments and pitch

differently, pitch accordingly. I always look forward to him starting."

Lester is coming off his 150th career win from his last start against the Mets on June 13. He struck out 10

batters in seven innings and allowed just one earned run in what manager Joe Maddon called an

"effortless" outing. In 62 at-bats against this Padres roster, he's only given up four RBIs and one home run

to Wil Myers.

Three things to know about this game

•.Padres batters picked up their power at the plate in their last series against the Brewers. They hit five

home runs on Saturday, which was the most since they also hit five in an 18-inning win in 2008. Infielder

Yangervis Solarte contributed with two go-ahead solo home runs in his first multi-homer game of the

season Saturday.

• Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo still hasn't made an out leading off a game. In five games atop the

Cubs order, he's homered twice, walked, singled and doubled.

• Padres pitchers recorded a season-high 19 strikeouts on Saturday, including 12 in five innings from

rookie Dinelson Lamet. They amassed 29 strikeouts in the first two games at Miller Park.

Maurer's struggles leave closer role

unsettled

Rookie Maton gets first Major League save Saturday

By Bill Center / San Diego Padres | June 18th, 2017

We've already seen some experimenting by Padres manager Andy Green with the closer role this season.

Left-hander Brad Hand picked up back-to-back saves May 24-25 against the Mets in New York as right-

hander Brandon Maurer was struggling.

Maurer righted the ship.

He's successfully converted seven straight save opportunities since Hand's two saves.

But Maurer's roller-coaster season continued Saturday in Milwaukee when he gave up a game-tying, two-

run homer in the 10th after hitting a batter on an 0-and-2 count. The situation was not normal. Maurer was

working a second inning. And he was in line for a win, not the save.

The Padres, of course, scored two runs in the top of the 11th on solo homers by Cory

Spangenberg and Chase d'Arnaud and the save fell to rookie Phil Maton more by a process of

elimination than design.

Still, Maton did get his first Major League save.

So Padres fans will again be wondering, is it time to re-evaluate the role of closer?

Maurer has some unusual numbers.

His overall earned run average is 6.51 in 30 appearances. He is 0-3. But he has converted 12 of 14 save

opportunities. His ERA in non-save situations is 7.47. His ERA in save situations if 5.25. But he has been

unscored upon in all 12 of his converted saves. In his two blown saves, Maurer gave up seven runs in

two-thirds of an inning.

Interesting.

Noteworthy

• The Padres have hit eight home runs in their first two games in Milwaukee. Yangervis Solarte has three

of the eight and has homered in both games. Wil Myers has a homer in each game. And Hunter Renfroe,

Spangenberg and d'Arnaud also homered.

• Solarte is 8-for-20 with four homers, seven RBIs and six runs scored during a five-game hitting streak.

He has hit safely in nine of the past 10 games, going 14-for-38 (.368) with five homers, six walks (a .467

on-base percentage), 12 RBIs and eight runs scored. His slugging percentage over the past 10 games is

.842, for a 1.309 OPS.

• LF/2B Jose Pirela has come back to earth. He is 0-for-13 over his past three games to drop his batting

average from .484 to .341. He has drawn two walks during those three hitless games with a stolen base

and two runs scored.

Nelson whiffs 10 in 1st CG as Brewers nip

Padres 2-1 Associated Press

MILWAUKEE -- With a tired Brewers bullpen in dire need of a break, Jimmy Nelson carried the load all by himself Sunday. Nelson struck out 10 in his first career complete game and Milwaukee got home runs from Hernan Perez and Manny Pina in a 2-1 victory over the San Diego Padres. "This is a guy picking everybody up and giving those guys a day off," Brewers manager Craig

Counsell said. "That's what you need some days. That's what big-time performance does -- not only wins you the game, but gives guys rest." Counsell said closer Corey Knebel and relievers Oliver Drake and Jared Hughes were not available because they needed a breather.

Nelson (5-3) allowed six hits and two walks while throwing 118 pitches in his 89th major league start. He gave up only an unearned run and lowered his ERA to 3.28.

"I've gone seven-plus or eight a couple of times, but that ninth inning definitely is nice," Nelson said. "Counsell showed confidence in letting us go deep."

Leading off the sixth, Perez hit his 10th home run into the Brewers' bullpen off starter Luis

Perdomo (1-4). One batter later, Pina connected on a 1-2 pitch for his fourth of the season to give Milwaukee a 2-1 lead.

Perdomo gave up eight hits and two walks with four strikeouts in six innings. He was helped by three double plays in the first five innings.

"He was in trouble in the first, the second, the third, the fifth," Padres manager Andy Green said. "He navigated a lot of trouble today. Some good defense behind him." Perdomo has lasted at least six innings in four of his last five starts.

"I did pretty well," he said. "I was just trying to be aggressive with my pitches and get some double plays, which I did."

San Diego scored in the fifth after Cory Spangenberg reached on an infield single and advanced to second on Nelson's throwing error. Erick Aybar hit an RBI single.

Sunday was the first Father's Day for Padres 2B Yangervis Solarte since his wife, Yuliett, died of cancer on Sept. 17, 2016. She was 31. His three daughters, Yanliett, Yuliett and Yulianna have traveled with him on the road since their school year ended. "Everybody knows what he went through last year with the passing of his wife," Green said. "For me, he's life and energy every day. He's that for his girls. I don't think it's a coincidence that his girls finally finished school and came out to San Diego and now are with him on the road and all of a sudden he's hitting. His family gives him life. I know he's happy that his girls are with him now."

HOMER HAPPY

There were 17 home runs in the three-game series, nine hit by the Brewers. They have scored their last 15 runs on homers.

TRAINER'S ROOM

Padres: OF Manuel Margot (strained right calf) is expected to begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A El Paso on Monday. ... RHP Trevor Cahill (right shoulder strain) plans to throw a side session Monday and could face live hitters by Thursday, Green said. Brewers: LF Ryan Braun (left calf strain) is cleared to play, but Counsell said the slugger "has got to have confidence to take the next step. We're just not quite there yet." Braun is expected to go out on a minor league rehab assignment before rejoining the Brewers.

Homers Hurt Padres in Series Loss Brewers hit a pair of dingers while Friars settle for singles

By Derek Togerson

If the Padres are not hitting home runs odds are they are not scoring many runs. On Father’s

Day the Friars had trouble manufacturing offense without the long ball in a 2-1 loss to the

Brewers.

San Diego put eight runners on base against Milwaukee starter Jimmy Nelson on six singles

and two walks but could only bring one of them home. In the 5th inning Erick Aybar singled

to left-centerfield to bring in Cory Spangenberg and put the Padres on top 1-0.

Other than that the Friars only got a runner past 1st base two other times, in the 2nd and 7th

innings, and failed to score on both occasions. It was a stark difference from Saturday’s game

where the Padres hit five home runs in hitter-friendly Miller Park.

This time it was the home run ball that cost them. Padres right-hander Luis Perdomo, who

made the first start of his big league career a year ago in Wisconsin, was good enough to get a

win this time. Perdomo went 6.0 innings and only allowed two runs, both on solo homers in

the 6th inning. First Hernan Perez lofted a fly ball that is an out in most other parks just over

the left field wall and two batters later Manny Pina hit a no-doubter to left-center for what

turned out to be the game-winner.

Nelson finished off his complete game effort by striking out Aybar, the 10th punchout of the

game for the Brewers righty.

The Padres continue their road trip on Monday at Wrigley Field against the Cubs. Clayton

Richard gets the start against Jon Lester.
