PACO Steel and Engineering Corp. has developed a state-of-the-art, pre-engineered, pre-fabricated and cost-effective Special Moment Frame to resist both lateral and gravity loads. Special Moment Frames allow the architect to design large clear openings and provides the Engineer of Record a frame capable of maintaining structural integrity.

Using PACO Steel’s lightweight sections, for the Special Moment Frame, the installation is fast, performed by the standard framing crew (no welders), fits into standard 2x4 or 2x6 wood walls and is less expensive than site-built wide flange moment frames. PACO Moment Frames are compatible with wood, LGS or heavy structural framing systems.

PACO will provide the EOR, calculations, submittal documents and detail drawings for the moment frames and their attachments to the foundation. This will reduce design time for the engineer and provide a cost-effective solution for large clear span openings.

PACO unstiffened extended end plate connection has an end plate that extends beyond the outside of the connecting PACO beam flanges. The end-plate is shop-welded to the end of a PACO beam and is then field-bolted to a PACO column flange with four rows of high-strength bolts using a total of 8 bolts.

The excellent inelastic response capacities of the PACO Special Moment Frame beam-column connections have been validated through numerous tests conducted at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (VirginiaTech) utilizing the testing protocol per Appendix S of 2005 AISC Seismic Provision.

Test results for the PACO SMF beam-column connection configuration indicate that the connection is capable of sustaining an interstory drift angle of more than 0.04 radians, exceeding code requirements.

The measured flexural resistance of the connection, determined at the column face, was greater than 0.80 Mp, where Mp=(1.1 Ry Zx Fy), of the connected PACO beam at the interstory drift angle of 0.04 radians.

1. Standard fabrication widths and heights for the PACO Moment Frames are provided on pages 15 to 18 (Moment Frame Capacity Table) in this catalog. The tables are grouped based on the height of the moment frames.

2. For demand requirements exceeding published values, please complete the PACO Moment Frame Design Criteria Worksheet on page 31.

3. Always refer to the installation specifications and details provided on the plans.

4. Prior to any fabrication, a signed copy of the shop drawings approving the frame dimensions will be required.

5. Additional instructions to the installer are included in the PACO Moment Frames package. To order PACO Moment Frames and templates, please call (800) 421-1473.

6. Each PACO Moment Frame package includes high strength bolts, washers and nuts to connect the end plates to column flanges. Refer to structural plans for bolt layout dimensions and tightening instructions.

7. The Engineer of Record (E.O.R.) is responsible for verifying the frame dimensions and details provided on the plans.

8. Per AISC Design Criteria, within the Protected Zone, discontinuities created by fabrication or erection operations are forbidden. See note 3 on page 10.

9. Shop and field inspections as required by the E.O.R., local building authorities and product manufacturers shall be provided by others.

10. PACO Steel & Engineering, Corp. provides a calculation package, submittal documents and detail drawings for all PACO Moment Frames.

1. The clear span-to-depth ratio of the beam shall be limited as follows: a. For SMF, 7 or greater b. For IMF, 5 or greater

2. Lateral bracing of beam shall be provided as follows: a. For SMF system, both flanges of beams shall be braced, with a maximum spacing of Lb = 0.086 ry E/Fy b. For IMF system, both flanges of beams shall be braced, with a maximum spacing of Lb = 0.17 ry E/Fy

3. Protected zones shall comply with the following: a. The portion of the beam between the face of the column and a distance equal to the depth of the beam or 3 times the width of the beam flange from the face of the column, whichever is less shall be designated as the protected zone. b. Within the protected zone, holes, tack welds, erection aids, air-arc gouging and unspecified thermal cutting from fabrication or erection operations shall be repaired as required by the engineer of record. c. Steel headed stud anchors and decking attachments that penetrate the beam flange shall not be placed on beam flanges within the protected zone. Arc spot welds as required to secure decking shall be permitted. d. Welded, bolted, screwed or shot-in attachments for perimeter edge angles, exterior facades, partitions, duct work, piping or other construction shall not be placed within the protected zone.

4. There shall be no transverse loading between the column supports in the plane of bending and the beams framing into the column weak axis shall be pin connected and produce a negligible moment.

5. The values of effective length factor, K, for columns are approximated as follows: a. The value of Ky, for column type buckling about the member’s weak axis is, Ky = 1.2 b. The value of Kx, for column type buckling about the member’s strong axis is approximated based on the recommended design values for frames with side sway uninhibited of Table C-A-7.1 of the AISC 14th Edition Manual.

6. Design of PACO Moment Frames is governed by drift requirements.

Bolted Moment Frame, Lightweight, No Field Welding

The seismic upgrade to the historic Litehouse project, with a large glass facade, required a lateral force resisting system to meet its architectural and structural specifications. To address this need, PACO Steel was contacted to design and manufacture an easy to install, cost effective, bolted unstiffened end plate mo-ment frame. The Structural Engineer of Record prepared a criteria sheet with the seismic loads, architectural parameters and erection preferences. With the information provided, PACO submitted the full calculations package, drawings, as shown below, and presented the preliminary budget number for approval. It was a breeze from submittal, to approval, to delivery and installation of the PACO Moment Frames.

INSTALL THE FRAME USING PROPER EQUIPMENT(S), AS NEEDED. POSITION IT ONTO THE ANCHOR RODS SO THAT IT RESTS ON THE LEVELING NUTS. PROVIDE ADEQUATE TEMP- ORARY DIAGONAL BRACING FOR THE FRAME. PLUMB ONE COLUMN AND ADJUST THE BRACE AS REQUIRED. INSTALL THE PLAN SPECIFIED HEAVY HEX NUTS AND WASHERS ONTO THE ANCHOR RODS AND FULLY TIGHTEN THEM WITH A WRENCH (1/2 TURN PAST FINGER TIGHT). A 11/2" GAP IS REQUIRED UNDER EACH BASE PLATE FOR A MIN. 4000 PSI NON-SHRINK GROUT.

PLUMB THE NEXT COLUMN, CHECK THE ELEVATION OF THE TOP NAILER WITH RESPECT TO THE ELEVATION OF THE ADJOINING WALL. INSTALL THE REMAINING PLAN SPECIFIED HEAVY HEX NUTS AND WASHERS ON THE ANCHOR RODS. FINGER TIGHT THEM AGAINST THE BASE PLATE.

PACO was requested to design numerous 20-foot tall Special Moment Frames with parallel and perpendicular connecting beams. The EOR prepared the preliminary field welded frames for the project. After providing the criteria sheets for the frames, the project was switched to the Paco designed un-stiffened bolted end plate special moment frames. Steve Fedewa, principal of IDS commented. “PACO provided the most efficient bolted connection design and provided numerous connection details and suggestions to allow for rapid completion of the structural steel connections”.

1. Why specify PACO Moment Frames (SMF)?PACO Special Moment Frames are the lightest weight and easiest to install end plate bolted moment frames available.

2. Will PACO provide custom moment frames for our project?Absolutely. In fact all our moment frames are custom. We have yet to run across a project that did not require a custom solution.

3. Is there any field welding required?All our moment frames are designed with end plate bolted connections. PACO bolted moment frames install in a fraction of the time required of traditional field welded frames.

4. How much does it cost?In almost all cases, it costs less than other moment frame solutions. Our moment frames are lighter in weight and bolt together which greatly reduces the total frame cost vs. traditionally designed field welded moment frames. We will provide a preliminary budget once we receive the PACO Moment Frame Design Criteria Worksheet.

5.How long does it take to design?We can’t do the impossible but we come close. Typically, we ask for 2 days for each frame but we have been known to turn designs around much quicker.

6. Do you have moment frames for single-family homes?Yes. We design and manufacture moment frames for single-family homes, custom homes, soft-story retrofit, mezzanine and multi-bay high-rise projects. If code allows it, we will design it!

7. Are your frames suitable for retrofit?Yes. Our frames are ideal for retrofit projects. All our frames are bolt together solutions and are the lightest moment frames in the industry.

8. Have PACO Special Moment Frames been tested?Yes. PACO moment frames are fully compliant with the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) design guidelines.

9. Does PACO provide the calculations package and drawings for submittal?Yes. We provide the complete submittal package to the Engineer of Record.

10. How should I order a frame?To start, simply fill out the PACO Moment Frame Design Criteria Worksheet included in this bro-chure (also available by email or at www.pacosteel.com) and submit to our in-house engineering staff. We will design the frame to meet your architectural and structural requirements.

11. How are the frames packaged for delivery to the installation job site?Individual columns and beams are trucked to the job site and are ready to be installed by the general contractor. Beam to column connection bolts are packaged with the delivery.

PACO Steel and Engineering Corp. has also developed a pre-engineered, pre-fabricated and cost-effective bolted together Special Concentric Braced Frame (SCBF) to resist lateral loads with higher magnitude.

PACO Special Concentric Braced Frames are designed in accordance with chapter F of AISC 341-10 seismic provisions. All connections will be bolted which allows fast installation in the field and eliminates the need for welding.

Concentric Braced Frame systems tend to be more economical than eccentrically braced frames in terms of material, fabrication and erection costs. They are typically located in the walls that occur in the core area around stair and elevator shafts. This generally allows for greater architectural flexibility in placement and configuration of exterior windows and claddings.

Special Concentric Braced Frames may be utilized in dual systems togeth-er with special moment frames in all seismic design categories with no limitation in the building height. This gives EOR the benefit of using a value of 7 for response modification factor (R=7).

PACO will provide the EOR, calculations, submittal documents and detail drawings for the Special Concentric Braced Frames and their attachments to the foundation. This will reduce design time for the engineer and provide a cost-effective solution for lateral loads with higher magnitude.
