September 2019 Dear Valued Community Partner, We are pleased to present to you Prevail’s 2019 “Go Purple” Campaign for Domestic Violence Prevention Month. We encourage you look through the entirety of the packet and take advantage of the resources that we are providing you as we partner together to stand against domestic violence during the entire month of October. October has been designated as Domestic Violence Prevention Month every year by Congress since 1989. This is an important time for the community to reflect on these devastating injustices. Nearly 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men experience intimate partner physical violence. Domestic violence is a complex issue and affects everyone, so we should all play a role in trying to be a part of the solution. While crisis intervention is an important immediate response to domestic violence, there is a great need to raise awareness and develop effective prevention strategies. Prevail is focusing on Primary Prevention efforts by working within our community on Developmental Assets, the 100 Men Campaign and Bystander Intervention. Last year out of the almost 4,000 clients served at Prevail, 48% of clients served were adults, adolescents, and children who were victims of family violence. Domestic violence occurs in our community, so it is important to have the opportunity to recognize domestic violence prevention month and to join you in collaboration to raise awareness during October. We are very grateful for your support and look forward to this annual opportunity to engage the public in the fight against domestic violence. For more information about Prevail’s “Go Purple” Campaign, contact Natasha Robinson at (317) 773-6942 or [email protected]. If you are interested in more information about Prevail’s Primary Prevention efforts, please contact Kelly Growden or Sara Roorbach at the Prevail office or by email [email protected] and [email protected] Sincerely,

Domestic Violence Facts and Statistics* Prevail believes promoting safe, stable, nurturing relationships and environments is one of the most effective strategies for eliminating intimate partner violence. Help us decrease the statistics below. 72% of all murder-suicides involve an intimate

partner; 94% of the victims or these murder-suicides are female.

19% of domestic violence involves a weapon. Nearly 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have ex-

perienced some form of physical violence by an intimate partner.

Each year, 1 in 15 children are exposed to intimate partner violence, and 90% of these children are eyewitnesses to this violence.

Victims of intimate partner violence lose a total of 8.0 million days of paid work each year.

My partner doesn’t punch me. So, I wouldn’t call it ‘abuse’ but

something is very wrong.

Abuse, domestic violence and sexual assaut are scary words. It may be difficult to believe that it could be happening to

you. Even if you just have the feeling that something is wrong in your relationship,

we can help. You can find your voice.

I wish I could help my friend, but I don’t know how.

Encourage your friend to reach out to us at Prevail. Their safety is the most

important thing to consider.

YOUR SAFETY PLANGetting out of a bad situation can be tricky. We can talk to you about ways that you might be safer in your situation, including exploring a Protective Order (Restraining Order). Remember, we are always available to talk with you on the 24-hour crisis line.

YOUR ADVOCATEYou can meet one-on-one with a Prevail advocate. An advocate is your supporter. They help empower you in your situation. When you decide on your next steps, you will not be alone.

YOUR FAMILYWhen trauma happens, it can happen to the whole family. Advocates work with children who have witnessed or experienced trauma. Prevail also offers support for non-offending parents/guardians whose children have experienced trauma.

YOUR NEW STARTWhen you make a new start, some real-life challenges may seem impossible. We provide assistance to find housing, employment, food, transportation, budget planning and more.

YOUR COURT SUPPORTPrevail works hand-in-hand with the Hamilton County Prosecutor’s Office and other court entities to help you navigate through the legal aspects of your situation.

YOUR GROUPIt’s true – there is strength in numbers. Each week, Prevail offers many support groups to connect people together that have gone through similar experiences.

YOUR STORYWe visit schools, give presentations, train teachers and more. One day, you may want to share your story as a way to help educate others.

Anyone who has experienced abusive situations can receive help

from Prevail’s advocates.

Just as every person, situation and story is unique, there is no one

path that fits everyone. An advocate listens, shines a light on multiple options and gives encouragement.

Also, Prevail’s services are free and confidential.

I care about you and I will support you, if you want. I know it is scary

but you can do this.

At Prevail, we believe violence is not inevitable. It isn’t a cancer; it’s not a natural disaster. It is the result of the choice the perpetrator makes to cause harm. So, the only way to completely prevent violence from occurring is to prevent

people from becoming perpetrators.

Domestic violence is not a freak accident or bad luck. It is a public health issue that can be prevented through environmental, social, and systemic change. Primary prevention—stopping the first time occurrence of violence before it happens—focuses on reducing the attitudes, behaviors, and circumstances in our relationships and communities that make people more likely to engage in violent behavior. Further, it focuses on building safe environments, access to resources, and meaningful connections in all areas of our lives.

Prevail is taking a multifaceted approach towards violence prevention, from building protective factors for young people to engaging men to empowering individuals to act when they witness a potentially dangerous situation. Our work with the 40 Developmental Assets framework helps us teach community members to provide an environment

where youth can feel safe, valued, and loved. The Assets are a list of qualities, behaviors, and experiences kids need in

order to thrive. We all can play a role in the lives of youth in our community, and we all have a responsibility to create and

maintain safe, stable, nurturing relationships and environments. We often hear the saying, “it takes a village to raise a

child,” and the Assets show us what this village looks like.

Prevail’s 100 Men Campaign: Domestic violence is not just a women’s issue, it’s an all-of-us issue. We need good men to stand with Prevail in our prevention efforts. Men from all walks of life play a crucial role in eradicating the destructive behaviors and attitudes that lead to violence. 100 Men is a leadership group that aims to develop male leaders who are willing to stand up and oppose violence, creating a ripple effect, encouraging more men to get involved, which will ultimately create a safer community for all. 100 Men group members have the opportunity to serve at 100 Men-sponsored events, as well as volunteer as a group with other organizations in the community. 100 Men members also attend quarterly meetings focused on networking and building skills around violence prevention. Our work with the Raise the Bar Indiana program empowers individuals to speak out and take action against potentially

violent behaviors. So often, we are afraid to speak up when we see something that makes us uncomfortable because we

are afraid of being wrong—we don’t want to misread the situation or bother someone, and we’re constantly taught to

mind our own business. But when we stay silent, the message of indifference we send to offenders and their victims is

loud and clear. Raise the Bar Indiana works with alcohol-serving establishments to help staff recognize potentially violent

situations and safely intervene.

Through these varied approaches, we hope to reduce occurrences of violence in our community. But Prevail cannot do this on our own. Preventing violence begins with all of us working together to create safer and loving environments. That

means building relationships, strengthening connections, and checking in on the people around you. It means encouraging each other, building others up, and breaking down the stigma that surrounds seeking help. Every single one

of us has a responsibility to our friends, families, and neighbors to do our part in keeping Hamilton County safe.

2018 Highlights

In In 2018, Prevail added an additional 3,200 square feet to its existing downtown Noblesville office. The space not only added meeting space, additional offices, and a staff kitchen; it came along with

opportunities to offer hope and healing to more people in our community:

Prevail added five additional support groups, making a total of 17 different support groups!

Prevail increased the number of clients served from 3,478 in 2017 to 3,968 in 2018, that’s a 14% increase. This was made possible by adding three new staff positions to the team.

Prevail added four additional schools to our list of schools where we are providing a Safe Dates curriculum. This means Prevail went from educating 2,749 students in 2017 to 5,720 in 2018.

Prevail offers crisis intervention and restorative support services for adult, adolescent and child survivors of crime and abuse.
